    Regarding the Wizards: “and none save maybe Elrond, Cirdan and Galadriel discovered of what kind they were and whence they came” - Unfinished Tales - page 502
    “The Exiles were allowed to return- save for a few chief actors in the rebellion, of whom at the times of the lord of the rings only Galadriel remained. At the same time of her Lament in Lorien she believed this to be perennial, as long as the Earth endured. Hence she concludes her lament with a wish or prayer that Frodo may as a special grace be granted a purgatorial (but not penal) sojourn in Eressea, the solitary isle in sight of Aman, though for her the way is closed. Her prayer was granted- but also her personal ban was lifted, in reward for her services against Sauron, and above all for he rejection of the temptation to take the Ring when offered to her. So at the end we see her taking ship. Unfinished Tales page 295
    “Her hair was held a marvel unmatched. It was golden like the hair of her father and of her foremother Indis, but richer and more radiant, for its gold was touched by some memory of the starlike silver of her mother; and the Eldar said that the light of the Two Trees, Laurelin and Telperion, had been sanred in her tresses. Many thought that this saying first gave to Faenor the thought of imprisoning and blending the light of the Trees that later took shape in his hands as the Silmarils. Unfinished Tales Page 296
    “For Faenor beheld the hair of Galadriel with wonder and delight. He begged three times for a tress, but Galadriel would not give him even one hair. These two kinsfolk, the greatest of the Eldar of Valinor, were unfriends for ever” Unfinished Tales Page 296
    “She had dreams of far lands and dominions that might be her own to order as she would without tutelage” Unfinished Tales Page 297
    “and a reverence for the Valar that she could not forget” Unfinished Tales Page 297
    “from her earliest years she had a marvellous gift of insight into the minds of others” Unfinished Tales Page 297
    “and she withheld her goodwill from none save only Faenor” Unfinished Tales Page 297
    ““once she had set foot upon that road of exile she would not relent, but rejected the last message of the Valar, and came under the Doom of Mandos.” Unfinished Tales Page 297
    “Even after the merciless assault upon the Teleri and tha rape of their ships, though she fought fiercely against Faenor in defence of her mother’s kin, she did not turn back. Her pride was unwilling to return, a defeated spullpiant for pardon. But now she burned with desire to follow Faenor with her anger to whatever lands he might come, and to thwart him in all ways that she could.” Unfinished Tales Page 297
    “it was not until too long ages more had passed, when at last all that she had desired in her youth came to her hand, the ring of power and the dominion of middle-earth of which she had dreamed, that her wisdom was full grown and she rejected it, and passing the last test departed from middle-earth forever” Unfinished Tales Page 298
    “I never thought no such thing,” answered Sam, in no mood for jest. “If you want to know, I felt as if I hadn’t got nothing on, and I didn’t like it.” She seemed to be looking inside me and asking me about what I would do if she gave me the chance of flying back home to the Shire to a nice little hole with- with a bit of garden of my own” FOTR page 469
    “And at times Melian and Galadriel would speak together of Valinor and the bliss of old” -Silmarillion page 145
    “the power that dwelt there was too great for any to overcome, unless Sauron had came there himself “ - LOTR appendix tale of years
    “I never thought no such thing,” answered Sam, in no mood for jest. “If you want to know, I felt as if I hadn’t got nothing on, and I didn’t like it.” She seemed to be looking inside me and asking me about what I would do if she gave me the chance of flying back home to the Shire to a nice little hole with- with a bit of garden of my own"

      I've read some reviews of the LotR that specifically took the movies to task for "lacking strong female characters".
      I swear, unless the main character is female, and is surrounded by other females, and endlessly supportive male characters, then a movie will be saddled by bad reviews from extremist feminists. (I self-identify as an Egalitarian, so don't take this as feminist-bashing, okay?)
      When you look at the time Tolkien wrote these masterpieces, it's a miracle that there were so many powerful female characters!

    Cate Blanchett was the perfect choice for Galadriel. Her type of beauty is rare-as was Galadriel's even among elves. Blanchett nailed the wisdom filled 'knowing look' she gave as she looked into the various Company member's hearts.

    Would've been nice to emphasise that Feanor, mightiest of all elves and the greatest smith ever to have lived, asked for three strands of her hair and was turned down.
    But Gimli the dwarf was given the desired three strands of her hair after asking for only one, which he only asked for after being pressed. This unimportant stammering dwarf was given what the mightiest could not acquire because of the former being humble. Extra emphasis on dwarf, the race that destroyed her first home in Middle Earth.

    As fas as I know Vilya wielded by Elrond is considered the most powerful of the Three Rings.

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  7 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Ye I correctly in the pinned comment, as I had mistakenly put Nenya as the ring of Air, and Vilya as the ring of water! Goes to show that even the details I feel I'm sure of, it's best to double check them!

    • @fong03
      @fong03 6 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      To be fair though, it is not entirely cut and dry. I believe VIlya is called "mightiest" of the 3 in Return of the King. In The Unfinished Tales, however, Nenya is referred to as "chief" of the three. Given that Tolkien was working to re-write Galadriel's history, I can see how one might come to the conclusion that Nenya reigns supreme. It could also be the case that Vilya was more powerful, but Nenya was more important or held special significance over the others.
      In any case, it's an understandable slip! :)

      you are correct

    • @Krobra91
      @Krobra91 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That is correct, Vilya was originally held by Gil Gilad the high king, however by the time of the Third Age and the setting of the Lord of the Ring, Vilya had lost most of its power as its wielder could not unlock its full potential. Nenya, the ring of adament of purity was give to Galadriel, considered one of the most power elves in the third age. Without the one ring, Galadriel could defeat Sauron. With his ring, he would defeat her, but he really would not because if i recall the stories, Suaron wanted her to be his queen and rule with him.

    So a couple of words as always! So working on this video, made me take Murphy's Law seriously. Had many issues with recording it, editing and even post production had many hurdles! At times it cut off the end of a few words such as rings and jewels. I upgraded my recording setting a bit so it should sound clearer than usual, though there were a couple of errors that I had to fix later, and thus had to re record these parts in less favourable conditions. Despite all this I'm very happy with the way the final product turned out, and I hope you enjoy it and learn from it! :)
    *Edit* - Just to clarify there's a mistake in this video regarding her ring of power, as I say Nenya is the strongest of the three, while in fact Vilya is! My apologies for this, while preparing my notes for a moment I forgot that Nenya was the ring of water and not of air and I swapped the two!

I'm delighted to see that there are others who think as deeply about the "backstory" of the Elves, after all, this is contained in just a few lines in the LotR and the Silmarillion's first part is enough to put most readers off from reading further (even though it is the most beautiful piece of prose writing I have yet read...). Well done with this video. I shall check out others you have done.

    Galadriel was intended by Tolkien to be a complete reference to the Norns - beings from Norse paganism that created and controlled the fates of every creature in the world.
    Not only was Galadriel supposed to be the oldest and wisest living elf in Middle Earth at the time of the war of the ring, lending to the immense wisdom of the norns, The Norns were said to live at the very bottom of the world tree Yggdrasil at the well of Mimir - a fountain of knowledge that Odin scarified one of his eyes to for a taste of that knowledge. The Mirror of Galadriel was a fountain that gave its viewer knowledge of the past, present and future, and was located at the foot of a great tree.
    edit: also, in the Silmarillion, it says that the ban to return to Valinor was placed solely on Galadriel - and possibly, Maglor - because she was the last remaining leader of the Noldor revolt. All the sons of Feanor, save Maglor, died.

    Tolkien does NOT get enough praise, I’ve always been a HUGE sci go fan, lord of the rings, Star Wars especially, Star Wars itself is a massive fleshed our universe with so much lore, but compared to the LOTR universe, SW is a short story. It is INSANE the amount of stories and history Tolkien has mad, just watching a video explaining how Sauron came to be from start to LOTR trilogy is 2 hours long? There is easily enough content for 1000 movies. If you think about it, as far as the movie adaptations of Tolkien’s world, we’ve seen the microscopic world of the tip, that’s on the tip of a continent sized ice berg. It’s like the Sol system compared to the vast size of the Milky Way galaxy. There is Soooooooooooooooo much cool as fuck stuff they could turn into movies, ENDLESS stuff really. Yea the hobbit and LOTR had cool stuff in it but by that time in the LOTR universe, the magic and mystery of the universe was literally at 11:59pm. Is essentially devoid of what I once was with all the magical creatures and people and places and gods. With today’s technology they could properly portray Tolkien’s world. I think a trilogy of saga on Morgoth is needed. Army’s with balrogs riding dragons, morgoth fighting a giant spider easily capable of killing him ( a god ) , there is just so much mind blowing shit they could put on screen. I believe in years to come they will flesh out the universe. LETS JUST HOPE DISNEY DOESNT BUY THE LICENSE!!!!

    its fascinating to think that in the beginning all that she desired was a dominion of her own. yet, as many evil came forth with those who crave too much power, in the end all she wanted was to come back to valinor and she desired peace not power.

  • @LS-me2yd
    @LS-me2yd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also interesting, that Galadriel denied Feanor strands of her hair for the Silmarils, but then gave her strands of hair without regret to a 'dwarf', who of course were responsible for the sack of Menegoroth. What irony! Galadriel's foresight in deducing the character of Feanor, Annatar, Sarumann, Aragorn, and Gandalf....truly she is the one who knows best "all that is gold does not glitter, all that wander are not lost"

  • @A-G-A-G
    @A-G-A-G 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I reckon it wasn’t that Galadriel craves power and overcame that tempatation but it’s that she craved a dominion and power to protect those within it. She does this with Lorien and it’s the reason why she ultimately refuses the ring and only sticks with her own ring as it is specifically said to not have the powers to attack but only defend whereas the one ring was only a tool for destruction. Therefore she was always pure of heart rather than power hungry as Feanor was

    i LOVED the casting of Cate as Galadriel. From her otherworldly beauty, to her "mannish" voice, she really immersed herself into this role and rather than making the character her own, she made herself into the character. Even though something about her (Cate) makes her look more Vanyar than Noldor (not just the hair, but her bone structure as well), I think that she was the best person in the world for this role!!

    Hey bro awesome vid! I have got something which i found really cool. Tolkien wrote about an britton sailor named eirol or elfwine (elf friend) who sailed to tol erresea and talked to elves in " our" timeline. This al happend during the time the romans started to occupy britton. He was the direct link between the old world as we read in the books and our "new" world, where we live in today. That would be an very interesting topic i think!

    The bearers of the Three and the One could sense each other just as Celebrimbor could sense when Sauron set the One on his hand. Which is why Frodo could see Nenya on Galadriel's hand. The One gave power based upon the strength of will of the bearer. It's written that if Sauron had regained the One all the works wrought by the Three as well as the minds of the bearers would be laid bare to Saurons malice.

    Just reading this June 28 2020 so may be corrected by now. Celeborn did not leave with Galadriel, he,went to Rivendell where his twin grandsons still were and followed her sometime later.
    Plus Galadriel gave Legolas a fancy bow and quiver as a gift for visiting Lorien with which he shot down the Nazgul soon after.

    One thing. The three elven rings. Galadriel has one of the rings. Gilgalad gave his to Elrond. The third was given to Gandalf by Cirdan the shipwrights of the havens. Galadriel sailed west with Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf. Celeborn did not sail west with Galadriel. He stayed behind to rule part of what was to become Greenwood with Thranduil ruling the other half

    I really liked the format. Very helpful knowing where the source material is located while the video is going. A little confusing when the symbol drops away. Maybe have a symbol for all the books and use your profile pick when it's your own thoughts?

    • @GeekZoneMT
      @GeekZoneMT  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My main issue with that is that if there are too many symbols it could get confusing. A symbol for The fellowship of the Ring, for the Two towers, for the Return of the King, for Tolkien's letters, for the appendices and one for my own thoughts. And when it comes to in-depth lore videos, I'd want to avoid over complicating things cause it's very easy to get lost amidst all the names, dates and story. So for this particular video, I wanted to differentiate between two sources that overlap a lot and cover the same parts of her history, as one is favoured over the other. However for the future, in simpler or more applicable scenarios, I'll try and use more symbols for sure. Thanks once again for the feedback!

    • @michaelstanton7528
      @michaelstanton7528 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree that too many symbols would get confusing and you do a good job of referencing things in the audio. Maybe you could have just three symbols (unquestioned cannon, extra lore that doesn't contradict cannon, and your own theories). I'm just throwing out ideas. Even if you got rid of the symbols I'd still be happy because you do great videos.

    • @GeekZoneMT
