More Bad News for Toyota Tundra Owners Caught in Safety Recall

  • More bad news for 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra owners... Dealerships are passing on them now. They're not taking them in on Trade or willing to buy them. The safety recall affecting 100K+ units is still a big "unknown"... meaning there isn't yet a set fix for it, Toyota dealers don't yet have a repair timeline or know the magnitude of the fix. Will it be an engine replacement? A smaller fix? They don't know yet. Because of that, they're not willing to buy 2022-24 Tundras from people. If they do, prepare to get wholesale value because the dealers are only allowed to wholesale the vehicles to other dealerships, not sell to the public. It's a sticky situation and I don't wish that upon anyone. WE all buy Toyota pickups because they've generally offered solid peace of mind and great resale values. Those days are gone unfortunately. People will be gun-shy of this new Tundra for quite some time. Rightfully so. Between the insanely high price tag, awful turn radius, faulty door cards with wind noise, fake V8 sounds pumped through the speaker system, and plastic-filled interiors... People are not impressed.
This new 2022+ Toyota Tundra is NOT LIKE the Tundras of old, and well, people are figuring that out the hard way. The prices of reliable V8 Tundras are spiking up along with 3rd Gen Toyota Tacomas, and the 2024 and older 5th gen 4Runner will soon join that pack. People want reliability, simplicity and affordability. None of which the new 2022, 2023, 2024 Toyota Tundra delivers. It's a shame.
What are your honest thoughts? Are you shocked to see the terrible resale values of the new Tundras? What do you think of dealers refusing to take the 2022+ Tundra in on trade or purchase?
Thank you for watching as always, if you haven't already please consider Liking and Subscribing. Your support means a lot, thank you!

It is my opinion that it is not a machining debris issue, but a design problem with the new bottom cover of the motor. It would take a large amount of debris to cause a failure and if there was that much debris it would be noticed on the assemblage. If there is a small amount, the oil filter would pick it up.

Im in the same predicament with my 23 TRX. The truck has a handful of small and large issues. Rattles, clicks, noises where there shouldn't be, leaking shock, rear sliding glass window won't stay on the track, side mirror unresponsive to adjustment controls. Just unacceptable build quality. I love the truck but what's pushing me over the edge to dump it is the dealer experiences. Im on my third CDJR dealer trying to get my truck in for warranty repairs. It seems none of the dealers want to take on warranty repairs because they don't get paid as much from the manufacturer for a warranty repair vs customer pay. They lie and BS you until you move on to another dealer. The best you get is " drop it off, there is no guaranteed time before someone even looks at it, and we don't have any loaners for you". What is the NEW car warranty worth if you can't even get an APPOINTMENT to get your vehicle in? and if you do..they won't provide a loaner. Icing on the cake; New Safety Recall - 33B : Insufficient welds in steering column that would prevent DRIVER airbag from deploying in the event of an accident. As of today, no fix. Serious enough that FCA put a STOP SALE on unsold affected vehicles. Consumers who have already purchased have to keep driving at a safety risk I guess..Should I dump it and possibly take a small loss in depreciation now? or should I continue to try and get the warranty items fixed and hold because I have a feeling the hellcat TRX values will increase or hold strong at the least once the v6 turbo RHO comes out.

I took delivery of a 2024 Toyota Platinum on May 7th of this year. Absolutely a beautiful truck. Smoother than any truck I've ever had to date. I've owned quite a few trucks over the past 25 years. Chevy's, GMC's, RAM and Fords. The majority of them were in the nicest trim levels. I will agree that there are some plastics in the new Tundra that are a bit flimsy. That is why I went to the Platinum. All the extra padding on the dash and it had real leather. I was informed to stay away from the hybrid version by friends in the business...mainly because of the extra cost and the MPG not really being much of a difference in the real world. I get a ton of compliments on this truck..more than any truck I've owned...and I've owned a bunch of trucks.
With that said...when I purchased a 2016 Ford F-150 Platinum, it sticker in at just over $62,000 in 2016. No sunroof...no heads-up display...no 4x4....BUT it had a 5.0L V-8. That truck had more recalls performed and a seriously dangerous adaptive cruise failure that could have had me killed in two situations on the highway. Got rid of it. Since then...I have transacted on a Grand Cherokee Limited, Chevy Silverado LTZ and a RAM Rebel. The Cherokee had electrical problems. The Silverado had clunky shifting, and an issue with drivability...and the Rebel...well...that was just perfect. BUT..during the pandemic, I was able to turn these vehicles with success and make a ton of money. Also..never paid any overages during the pandemic. I bought them right.
But if you look at the sticker price of the 2016 F-150 Platinum in 2016...it was just over $62,000. I received an $8,000 discount on it. In 2024, the Tundra was $73,600. I received a $7,500 discount on it 8 years later..and tons more technology, $10,000 is the increase. It's not as insane as what one would think. I did hear rumor at the time that engines on the Tundra were failing. I took a chance that it was just a blip in the radar.
However...in this particular case and to be safe....I LEASED IT!!! 3 years of use will occur...and it has a guaranteed residual value. If it isn't worth it at the end...I just walk away! It was a great decision to lease it instead of owning it. If everything works out OK...then at least I have the opportunity to achieve SOME equity in 3 years. If not...I havent lost a dime.
In my honest opinion...Toyota Tundras were never all that sexy in the past. HORRIBLE gas mileage and looked bland inside....with a lifeless exterior. Older Tundras have had their share of problems as well I will say that Toyota is stepping up to the plate and addressing these issues. Give them that!!! In an effort to achieve Government standards by 2030, these manufacturers have been forced to design and implement the newest technology..and with that...there will be some glitches along the way. We just never expected TOYOTA to have them. This will soon pass. The dealers may not take them...because if this issue does spread into the 2024's..they will be issued a stop sale on their existing NEW inventory as well as their pre-owned inventory. They don't want to take any used ones in until they know the ramifications or at least knowing all the details. Makes financial sense. They could stand to lose thousands of dollars per vehicle if they cannot sell them along with weekly depreciation occurring as well as floor planning expenses...which AIN'T cheap!!

No way there is debris in all these motors from multiple different factories. This is just a cop out. What they’ll do is drop the pan and flush the motor. They’ll say there aren’t any shavings in there and send them on their way. It’s just a con to say these recalled motors are serviced and any other problem is most likely customer induced. They’re just hoping they last until warranty expires.

That is on the 2.7 you see big cross member supports on the engine girdle. Definitely many on the side of design defect. As for Toyota admitting it they never will. They will mitigate as best they can to reduce losses and get owners past the their warranties. Think GM. They are really good at this. Anymore all the oems act like this. The bean counters and solicitors are at the wheel. Many owners will get burned with expensive repairs. And eventually they will rework this motor.

I've been using my 24 Plat Hybrid for a lot of heavy towing & so far no issues. Hopefully Toyota will come clean & as owners let's hope the engine failures remain a low % of those out there. I usually keep my trucks 10-12 years & 200K+ BUT ???

Hate the new trucks Toyota put out! What we want is OPTIONS!!
    1. Still offer the V8
    2. Good turning radius
    3. Offer a fucking manual transmission with EVERY combination!
    4. The Tacoma needs to offer a v8 as well!
They have like 7 different trims for the tundra but only 1 shitty engine and a stupid “put in gear and press go” two pedal lame ass transmission! Real trucks don’t shift themselves and there is nothing wrong with having the option to buy a man’s truck vs a truck that any middle school girl can drive 😂. More effort needs to go into making an awesome manual transmission! Forget this intelligent shift nonsense and make an 8 and 10 speed manual by integrating a splitter like in a semi! Automatics are boring to drive and you lose all of the clutch control. They’re so boring that people would rather use their free hand to play with their phone instead of watching the road! Make Manuals Great Again!

I put my vin in to see if my 2022 is one of the ones but it shows no open recalls. Have they not done that yet?

As a household who has owned an Fj cruiser,Scion FRS, Scion cd, Toyota Camry. It’s frustrating to see Toyota debating this much from their core

toyota as a Japanese car brand is a complete failure w/o any customer service...in contrast to Honda...Honda is far superior and more people should look into to their products
