    The Honda NSX-R GT's "Snorkel", or I like to call it the "unicorn" is quite literally a unicorn. Honda only made 5 for homologation reasons but since it was so late in the production cycle (2005), no one wanted to buy it. Only one was ever sold to Yoshiaki Yoshida (CEO of DHC Corp) and it sat in BINGO Sports showroom until it was sold just earlier this year to an anonymous buyer.

    • @JDMArchives
      @JDMArchives  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Wow! That’s fascinating. There’s so many stories like that with unique JDMs. Can you imagine how fast they would sell now!? The more I look at the car the less weird it looks and the more I love it.

    • @naute2day
      @naute2day 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@JDMArchives The funny part is the "unicorn" isnt even functional on the retail version. It's just a plastic snorkel that they stick onto the rear windshield. The NSX-R that Honda use in the JGTC has plastic windshield so they can cut a hole for the snorkel.

  • @AbrahamArthemius
    @AbrahamArthemius 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

    The term "Rear Hatch Garnish" by Honda is technically 100% correct because that "Intake" has zero function and just stuck on the rear glass & not connected to the engine at all. It really was a garnish. 😂
    It's there so Honda can use it to homologate & modify their NSX-GT race car to use an actual F1-style intake set-up in JGTC/Super GT.

    • @JDMArchives
      @JDMArchives  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      That’s funny 🤣 also explains why there was zero description about how it functions.

    Hey mate, the century isnt a flag pole. Its a parking pole which extends up and down and has an illuminated light on the top for you to see where your front of your car is

    • @JDMArchives
      @JDMArchives  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Someone else commented that too but as a parking sensor. I’ll have to try confirm that, as it’s really common to have a Japanese flag attached to it, and it can be searched that way in the auctions too. Thanks for the info!

    • @matthewsmith7244
      @matthewsmith7244 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@JDMArchives Yeah, definitely a parking aid. It used by shorter people who can't see where their bonnet/hood ends. It's retractable and comes up like an aerial when you want to park and helps gauge distance for the front. The Century was used extensively by diplomats in Japan, so I can see why people would say it was a flag pole. The flag poles on these cars are static and have one on each side of the bumper. 👍

      @@JDMArchives Yep its a parking pole, always only 1, always sits diagonally from the driver. Can be solid, retractable, metal, plastic, illuminated ect. Helps see the opposite corner of the car better

    As a Brazilian living in Japan, I can now understand partially why they would have stock tire chains as an optional
    Depending on where you live, you can get quite a bit of snow. Not enough to get you grounded, but enough to be hard to drive. Nowadays, it's easy and cheap to buy snow studless tires and get them changed for the winter, but I guess there were not as many cheap or accessible options back then
    I lived in Tokyo and now live in Chiba. Neither regions get enough snow, but even 2 inches would be enough to require chains, especially on a high power RWD car 😅

    The first thing that comes to mind when I talk about weird options would be the Airfantasy smell-o-rama thingy for the Toyota Sera. They were little casettes/plugs that you plugged onto a single din apparatus and it produced smells. Also there's the 87/88 CRT touchscreen for the Toyota Soarer, it let you control the ride height to some degree and some other functions and it was quite responsive for something of that nature and vintage.

    These snow chains are surely a weird option for a sports car but you generally use them on ice and ice is flat, ground clearance doesnt really matter (when it snows, snow trucks go through the roads to remove snow but ice can still be on them). They grip better than tires do because they bite into it rather than slide but idk, I hear that chains mounted like that can slip. I also don't live in such climate by the Polish sea up north but in Polish mountains on the south these are always a good thing to have. It's better to have them than not, calling a tow truck is costly and annoying and these can pull you out of troublr. It's basically something like a battery jump starter. You generally don't need them but you can later regret not having them.
    Though I daily an eg6 now, I used to drive my mk2 vw jetta all the time which is slammed to the ground. I would drive it through the snow and stuff in winter (it snows for a week maybe now but still). There are always some ice patches. One time the light turned green and I would just wheelspin in place even though I had snow tires, I spinned so much the light has already turned red. I think I solved it by using just the clutch

    I believe Hokkaido, the northern island, gets some of the highest levels of snow in the world, so the chains make a bit of sense. It's still a bit bizarre, though, that you'd be out in snow in rwd low-slung sports car but I guess in a pinch they might be the difference between being stuck in the snow and crawling home.

      @@JDMArchives It's a parking assist (called a Parking Pole - literally translates to that if you read the page you show in the video) - these were commonly available (but rarely purchased) in the late-80's/early-90's JDM cars as option items. They are always located diagonally to the driver's seat.

    Many Japanese mountain roads have mandatory tire chain policies in the winter months.
    Weather in the mountains, no matter where you are, can change rapidly, and unpredictably

    You missed a few cars that had active aero. The R31 Skyline, R32, and R33. (not the GT-R's) On the R31, there was a front spltter that was offered on the GTS-X and GTS models for downforce (correct me if i'm wrong) Same goes for the R32 GTS-T Type M and GTS4 and were only featured on the turbo only ones. These are pretty rare too and were usually ditched because it took up space for the intercooler, plus people putting on a bigger intercooler as well as aftermarket aero making these very rare. And for the R33, the times the splitter was really featured were i belive only the Series 1 GTS25-T Type M's. Same thing goes with people ditching them for more mods and aftermarket aero making them rare as well. This is all from memory so again correct me if I'm wrong with some of this

    Quite a bit of guesswork in the video... the NSX-R had the (completely non-functional) snorkel to make the bodywork legal in JGTC/Super GT racing. Without a production model having the feature, it would not have been available in the racing series at a certain point.
    Another car that had a similar homologation feature was the Celica GT-FOUR which had a completely disabled air injection system between the air bypass valve and the exhaust manifold. Mitsubishi had similar inactive systems on some EVO models.

It also have a Megane RS Gendarmerie edition with the Gendarmerie livery. The Gendarmerie in France is a police section that we can't copy there livery. I always thinking myself, what I risk if I Import a factory Renault Megane RS Gendarmerie edition from Japan to France and use it ? Do I need to remove the livery ?

    There's so many wrongfully "valuable" parts that if someone took 2 seconds to research would realize are available on far cheaper cars for almost free if not actually free. For instance, people have those exact same part number "RX7 Nardis" fitted on EVERY mazda MX-5 of the same year that was sold side by side with it. Not just in Japan, that "Nardi RX7 wheel" was sold on EVERY MX-5 globally between 2000 and 2002. In 2003 they quit putting the Nardi badge on, but the wheel remained exactly the same design for the 2004 to 2005 (I suppose making it less desirable but nevertheless). The same story for the R34 Syline steering wheel and S15 steering wheel. Same wheel. Same outter rim. One has a Harry potter lightning bolt, the other says Nissan (meaning if you wanna spruce up your S13 or S14, you can have that sexy 3 spoke without the Nerdy S15 logo wrongfully on it and a very relevant Nissan logo in it's place). This SAME wheel that some people sell for over $500 just because they knew it came on R34s and 15s are also standard in Nissan Primeras, Sentras, Stageas, and other obscure and bottom trim vehicles throughout the lineup. And a similar hilarity is mimicked by Toyota. Everyone wants the sexy 3 spoke "late model A80 Supra" steering wheel.. The same one that is sold in virtually EVERYTHING aswell, including Celicas, Currens, Corollas, and again, every other obscure Toyota from every bottom trim level. There's plenty in the junk yard in perfect condition that would otherwise be worth nothing. Like the S15, it also has a special version of it for the Altezza, again being the exact same wheel but "written on" with the letter's ALTEZZA so it sort of only really looks good in the car it came in.

      Wow great info! I’m fortunate enough to have owned a few R34s over the years and they do share the same wheels to some extent like your describing but there is always idiosyncrasies that need altering to be authentic to the vehicle. For example both GTRs were series 1 GTR VSpecs and hence had red stitching all outer black with GTR logo central which is different to the R34 GTT I have. There’s no reason why you couldn’t get the logo changed, the stitching redone etc. etc. like your describing and save yourself a lot of money. Great comments, thanks.
