Around Chernobyl, for years after the disaster, ruthless people broke into a lot of buildings and stripped everything of value. For example they took all the radiators from the buildings, loaded them onto trucks, and sold them elsewhere as normal scrap metal. They did the same with devices, cables, everything you can think of. And in Japan they leave all the nice cars standing there untouched. Really shows you the different mentality of the people, respect for property, and common sense not to mess with radioactive stuff.

Seeing that 26k mile s13 blew me away. Especially when it’s pretty common now to see 300k+ mile shells selling for 5k in the states. It breaks my heart to hear that gems like that are just going to be crushed.
the gauges were in MPH, it was LHD, and it was a 240SX - not a 180SX as it would've been in Japan. so it was indeed 26k miles. though honestly, who was batshit insane enough to import the US version of a car that was plentiful in Japan?

As a fellow Skyline owner I can't imagine how the owner of the R32 felt having to leave what was likely their pride and joy out in the elements like that knowing they may never be able to get it back. Definitely makes you appreciate these older cars more when you realise every year that goes by there's less and less of them in the world
This is why the owners/company of these power plants that went balls up..should be made to pay for everything that the individuals who lived here lost.

I have been going there and colle ting cars over the past 4 years. So far I have rescued about 50-60 vehicles, restore them to usable condition and then tried to find the owners of the vehicles.
Pearl Harbor is what I'll never forget. My grandfather being shot at by Japs. That's what I'll never forget. We are enemies, YOU shouldn't forget that.

@Clémoki26 Natural decay won't change how the radiation effected the materials of the cars over the years. Besides, by the time these cars are "safe" again, there won't be anything on them that's worth saving. Anything that the radiation doesn't break down, Japan's naturally moist, salty air will.

It's all thanks to Japanese culture and style of living you don't reach out your hand to touch something that doesn't belong to you. They respect each others space and possession even if the owner is long gone or abandoned it, they wouldn't dare to.

Myself and my colleague took photos of some of the same cars back in 2016 when we passed through Route 6 on our way north to shoot racing at Sportsland SUGO. We were very mindful not to interact with the vehicles, and instead merely observed what we found, coming away with some memorable photos and some lasting and poignant memories.

I can only imagine it must've been devastating for the owners of some of these cars, especially since a lot of them were fairly new. That white STI couldn't have been more than three years old at the time of the disaster! It's certainly odd to see cars that are so treasured by enthusiasts here in North America in such states of disrepair
It's sad to see these cars left out abandoned in a place like this, as someone who's a huge fan of jdm cars living in the u.s this is just depressing they left a huge impact in the motor world in the early 2000s
Oh man! So many of them broke my heart! This is like being given a tour of an impossible gold mine where huge gold nuggets are just laying all over the floor, then being told "all this is ruined, and will have to be dropped into an active volcano. So tragic!

You can tell that Japan is an extremely civilized country just by looking at how few cars got looted. Also, of all cars I could expect to see I would never guess a Peugeot 1007.
Its amazing to see how little these cars have rusted being overgrown and in a humid area. My parts z31 has been sitting for 3 years and I just pulled the whole bonnet off with my hands from all the rust
Thanks for taking us back there, Bob. I lived in Japan for several years and I was told I couldn't bring a Japanese domestic car to the US because it didn't meet US safety standards. And I thought that was true. For instance, the doors were about half as thick as doors on US cars. Japanese domestic cars weren't made for US highway speeds. I really wanted to bring home my Isuzu Bellett car though!
@@jepolch Well, that does change it a lot. I wouldn't want to be in the traffic with a "tiny" Japanese car either, with all the land yachts made in the US in 70's-80's. Thought we were speaking of more modern times.
I simply couldn't help but feel pretty sad... , specially over the Porsche 964 and the many beautiful JDMs , but what really hurts me is what happened that day in all of Japan , so many dead people and losses... I cant believe many forgot this tragedy.
It's heartbreaking and creepy to see these cars slowly rotting away. Creepy in a sense that people were so scared shitless to the bone about their possible demise that they left whatever they had behind for safety.
The fire engine; I don't know if this is the one used by first responders who arrived at the Daichi Fukushima Power plant only to realize the disaster was already underway- two fire fighters suited up and drove a pumper close enough to one of the buildings with a failed generator and began streaming water into the reactor pools to try to cool it down. Those heroes died less than a year later, IIRC. Over a third of Japan's fishing fleet died that day too. FR
I was in Japan the day the Tsunami struck.....What amazed me was how calm the people where . Even though they knew a terrible tragedy was unfolding they remained completely calm
I'm really impressed for how long they've been there. In Ukraine after Chernobyl has happened every civilian car was burried under the ground. Vehicles which took part in elimination of this accident were put on the big field and abandoned. For years looters have been robbing these cars for some spare parts.
Actually those chernobyl cars were burried under ground not so long ago. Around 2007-2014~. Mass burial sites started at those times. You can still fibd photos from 2006 of fields full of cars, military equipment, helicopters.
Man, is that rain? Nope, just car enthusiasts tears. The fact that parts were removed from that Skyline just shows how much demand there is for that car and it's parts. You never see that in Japan. Was really curious what that Mazda was with the curtains in the back window at 4:47? Such Japanese character, and it had race wheels on it. Would love to know that story to that car, very cool. Honestly makes me sad to see so many vehicles especially the JDM Icons left to rot due to unfortunate circumstances of the Fukushima disaster but what makes me feel even worse is the American classics due to how much it actually costs in Japan to own one of those
It's sad when you see the state of decay of wonderful cars and places, but it's a reminder that we are no match to nature, for me the one that got me was the 64 impala and the caddy :'(
You have to be really, REALLY committed to owning something that massive over there, so I can't imagine how heartbroken its owner was to have to leave it behind...
7:29 what’s always astounded me is how out of all the TH-camrs who have gone to Fukushima no one has ever addressed that white Toyota Tundra in the background, you’re probably thinking “oh it’s just a Toyota truck in Japan, who cares?” Except Tundras have always been built and sold exclusively in the USDM market, that’s not exactly a common truck there. I can’t imagine there’s another first Gen Tundra in Japan at all.
Yeah I thought the same thing. I had to rewind the video to make sure I saw that correctly. Another surprising American car that was in the footage was that Chevy Express panel van and the Ford Excursion.

Hello, I'm Japanese, but even Japanese people don't know these areas very well.These cars often cannot be returned to their owners.This area still looks much the same as it did 10 years ago.I'm glad that this experience was conveyed to people overseas.

I did not have to leave my hometown after the earthquake, but some people in the Hokuriku region had to evacuate. I hope those cars will be able to return to their owners, if they are still alive. From Japanese people.

In Japan they use metric system, so it will be 27k km S13.. That’s about 17k miles.. Which makes it even worse.

I can only imagine it must've been devastating for the owners of some of these cars, especially since a lot of them were fairly new. That white STI couldn't have been more than three years old at the time of the disaster! It's certainly odd to see cars that are so treasured by enthusiasts here in North America in such states of disrepair

It's sad to see these cars left out abandoned in a place like this, as someone who's a huge fan of jdm cars living in the u.s this is just depressing they left a huge impact in the motor world in the early 2000s
Oh man! So many of them broke my heart! This is like being given a tour of an impossible gold mine where huge gold nuggets are just laying all over the floor, then being told "all this is ruined, and will have to be dropped into an active volcano. So tragic!

As a car enthusiast, it is very sad to see these cars in this condition and not be able to save them. It breaks my heart to see those JDM cars like that.
You can tell that Japan is an extremely civilized country just by looking at how few cars got looted. Also, of all cars I could expect to see I would never guess a Peugeot 1007.
Recently, JDM theft has been occurring frequently in Japan, and many of the stolen items have flowed overseas. That's very sad.

Its amazing to see how little these cars have rusted being overgrown and in a humid area. My parts z31 has been sitting for 3 years and I just pulled the whole bonnet off with my hands from all the rust

Maybe the paint layer on the cars is still intact, the smallest amount of paint chipped off with the metal exposed will be enough to cause rust

Thanks for taking us back there, Bob. I lived in Japan for several years and I was told I couldn't bring a Japanese domestic car to the US because it didn't meet US safety standards. And I thought that was true. For instance, the doors were about half as thick as doors on US cars. Japanese domestic cars weren't made for US highway speeds. I really wanted to bring home my Isuzu Bellett car though!
Most of these are way safer than most of the crap made in US.

@@jepolch Well, that does change it a lot. I wouldn't want to be in the traffic with a "tiny" Japanese car either, with all the land yachts made in the US in 70's-80's. Thought we were speaking of more modern times.
I simply couldn't help but feel pretty sad... , specially over the Porsche 964 and the many beautiful JDMs , but what really hurts me is what happened that day in all of Japan , so many dead people and losses...
I cant believe many forgot this tragedy.

It's heartbreaking and creepy to see these cars slowly rotting away. Creepy in a sense that people were so scared shitless to the bone about their possible demise that they left whatever they had behind for safety.
I can imagine the radio call in very excited Japanese, 'Bob has been spotted in the area, roll every unit we have!'

The fire engine; I don't know if this is the one used by first responders who arrived at the Daichi Fukushima Power plant only to realize the disaster was already underway- two fire fighters suited up and drove a pumper close enough to one of the buildings with a failed generator and began streaming water into the reactor pools to try to cool it down. Those heroes died less than a year later, IIRC. Over a third of Japan's fishing fleet died that day too. FR
I was in Japan the day the Tsunami struck.....What amazed me was how calm the people where . Even though they knew a terrible tragedy was unfolding they remained completely calm
I'm really impressed for how long they've been there. In Ukraine after Chernobyl has happened every civilian car was burried under the ground. Vehicles which took part in elimination of this accident were put on the big field and abandoned. For years looters have been robbing these cars for some spare parts.
Actually those chernobyl cars were burried under ground not so long ago. Around 2007-2014~. Mass burial sites started at those times. You can still fibd photos from 2006 of fields full of cars, military equipment, helicopters.

Man, is that rain? Nope, just car enthusiasts tears. The fact that parts were removed from that Skyline just shows how much demand there is for that car and it's parts. You never see that in Japan. Was really curious what that Mazda was with the curtains in the back window at 4:47? Such Japanese character, and it had race wheels on it. Would love to know that story to that car, very cool. That Impala is actually a 1964 that's so heartbreaking to see that that's a very expensive car I have a four door version I'm very thankful for it

Honestly makes me sad to see so many vehicles especially the JDM Icons left to rot due to unfortunate circumstances of the Fukushima disaster but what makes me feel even worse is the American classics due to how much it actually costs in Japan to own one of those

It's sad when you see the state of decay of wonderful cars and places, but it's a reminder that we are no match to nature, for me the one that got me was the 64 impala and the caddy :'(

7:29 what’s always astounded me is how out of all the TH-camrs who have gone to Fukushima no one has ever addressed that white Toyota Tundra in the background, you’re probably thinking “oh it’s just a Toyota truck in Japan, who cares?” Except Tundras have always been built and sold exclusively in the USDM market, that’s not exactly a common truck there. I can’t imagine there’s another first Gen Tundra in Japan at all.
Yeah I thought the same thing. I had to rewind the video to make sure I saw that correctly. Another surprising American car that was in the footage was that Chevy Express panel van and the Ford Excursion.

Hello, I'm Japanese, but even Japanese people don't know these areas very well.These cars often cannot be returned to their owners.This area still looks much the same as it did 10 years ago.I'm glad that this experience was conveyed to people overseas.
My Heart Sank seeing that R32 and the S2000... Such iconic cars just left to rot.

In my younger years I always wanted to do a video like this live it man keep up the good work it’s weird a left hand drive 240sx in Japan but they like the lhd version of Japanese cars.
I did not have to leave my hometown after the earthquake, but some people in the Hokuriku region had to evacuate. I hope those cars will be able to return to their owners, if they are still alive. From Japanese people.
