70D is a teenager, while 7D is a mature adult.

Great piece. But I think the 7D is more a professional choice for filmmakers. I have 2 7Ds, a 60D and the FGV modified 7D body. The 7D in film comparison is like shooting 3perf motion picture 35mm. Awesome results when viewed in a theater.

The numbers are not based on exchange rates, they are based on the current sale value of the cameras in the UK and US (from Amazon for example). UK usually has more taxes duty involved which is why the prices are usually higher

I have used 7D but thinking about 70D..but my mind keep saying that 7D is much better for stills, doesnt matters when u compare the pixels [20.2MP nd 18MP]...not a big difference and it has got 5 modes for still but 70D has got only 3 modes...70D is mainly aiming at more featured videos..thats all..for normal still photographers 7D is the best out of 70D

That was a very clear, succinct review. About 2 years ago I bought a used 7D, with a 28-135 kit lens, that had 6k activations on the shutter for $1000. It's been a great camera. Of course when I bought my 7D the 70D hadn't come out yet. Even if it had been available I'd probably have gone with the 7D anyway as I don't shoot much video and I'm not a fan of touch screen. I like the buttons and switches on the 7D which, once I got used to them, allow me to make quick changes without having to look at the back screen. To me, touch screen is gimmicky, but to each his own. Wireless would be nice to have, but with my USB 3.0 card reader, I don't have any trouble transferring pictures from my high speed CF cards to my iMac quickly. I like the heft and feel of the 7D - doesn't feel like a toy (like my SX50 does, for example). I don't know if the 70D is built with a magnesium chassis, but the 7D is and it's dust and weather proof (which I love since I shoot outdoors in inclement weather a lot). Also, I like to shoot sports and birds in flight, so I like having that extra bit of shooting capability in multi-shot mode. I think both are great Cameras and if better video capability was what I needed, and I was in the market, I'd probably go with the 70D. But for me, the magnesium build and weather proofing makes the 7D my choice. I am really looking forward to seeing what the 7D Mark II will have (if it's not just a rumor).

People, the 7D is a monster. And the truth is that the extra 0,5mm on the sensor size doesn't make the 70d bit on. However, the 70D has a better processor (Digic 5 plus), so...slightly better on low light conditions. Between the this two, I choose the 70d but the I believe the 7D Mk II will be awesome.

I'm a proud owner of the 7D. It's a fantastic camera. The 70D, an upgrade to the 60D, also looks like a great camera - and it would definitely be worth considering as an alternative to the 7D. The only thing that would put me off the 70D is the plasticy body and the fact that the 7D MK 2 is in the making.

I'd go for the 7d due to its superior construction. I'd say that the swivel screen on the 70d is just another thing that might break. Both are great camera's, anybody should be happy with either.

I would still go with the 7d. the 70d has little weather sealing and is way less durable. The 7d is a work house and the reason there is not a replacement for it yet is that it is an awesome camera. On the other hand the 70d will be out dated next year.

    Exactly, the hierarchy is 4digit -> 3digit -> 2digit -> 1digit.
Megapixel are for marketing purpose mainly (For people who know little about camera's but like to show off whilst amongst people who know even less). The 1Dx has 18 MP just as the 7D. Half of what the Nikon D800 has. Still we are talking about $7000,- body only.

just purchased the 70D from my friends at B&H.. will let you know what I think... I did like this video since you compared similar cameras, unlike others that compare 4 grand cameras with 1 grand cameras...and I'd like to mention.. it's not the camera that is professional or amateur.. it's the photographer who is the professional... a camera is a tool.. like a wrench and if you can't use the wrench... you can't fix the car...no matter how much that wrench cost.

I dont know why canon doesnt use the "mark" term on all cameras when they introduce new versions, e.g 10D mark II or 100D mark III instead of 50D, 60D, 500D, 600D and so on? The number series can be really confusing, especially with the new 100D coming out.

Both the DSLRs excellent, I own both and use regularly. As per my experience, these are the strengths of the two models in brief:
    7D:
    - Faster burst rate
    - Little larger pixels producing slightly superior and cleaner images.
    - Real solid weather-sealed body, feels great in my palm.
    70D:
    - The game changer DPAF.
    - The awesome tilt-swivel touch screen, focus and shutter.
    - Lovely silent shooting option.
    - Excellent video option and quality. However, there are complaints of longer duration and frequent video capture might destroy the motherboard.

The 70D surly is a very good camera. It took a while to get that 19 cross point AF system from the 7D into the dual digit model (70D).
We shouldn't forget indeed that the 7D is on the market for several years now. Anyway, if you consider upgrading from a 7D the most logical step is the 5D MIII and not downgrading to a 2digit camera, even though this one is very good. The 70D b.t.w. does not have a magnesium body. If you like some fun have a look at the crash test video of the 7D on DigitalRev

Still the 70D is a amazing piece of gear. This wasn't point of the discussion. The reason fro comparing the 70D with the 7D was primarily to see how close the newborn comes to the prosumer-level. This on the other hand will challenge the engineers to crank up the follower of the 7D quite a bit.

The 7D has also dual processors. The difference in weight is due to the full magnesium alloy body of the 7D. It has nothing to do with accepting it. Canon is (other than Nikon) not making a mess when it comes to numbering their models. The 70D takes the place of the 60D while the 7D is still waiting on the 7D MKII. Just ask Canon.

I had the 7D and just purchased the 70D. I am not happy with the way the 70D's Quick Dial which has been made smaller and very tight with the set button with the move arrows. It is difficult not to hit and activate the arrow when trying to use the the Quick Dial. Also, I find it difficult to have the camera info come up in the LCD after a shot. In the 7D, I was able to bring up the picture mode i.e. landscape, portrait, etc and also WB much easier. I guess that I got used to my 7D after 3 yrs of use and need more time to except the different configurations.......

If I was looking to get new canon EOS affordable camera of course it will be the Canon 70D no thought needed. There was times that i wish my camera did video. The video will come in handy. If I had a dollar for every time someone says be patient or rumor has it, I would be able to own a Canon 1DX by now. Realistically when you actually think about it the 70D is a 7D mark II except the 100% view finder and the extra FPS lol
Other than that its a serious upgrade compared to the 7D.

+AceStatic Either 70d or T5i. If you have the budget, get the 70d, but the T5i is cheaper. I'm pretty sure the 7d doesn't have a flip screen, which is good for seeing yourself in focus, and in the frame, so, you can eliminate the 7d, and look at the T5i or 70d to your price point or preference for fps in continuous shooting, autofocus and whatnot. The af is better than the t5i on the 70d, so if you plan on using autofocus, get the 70d.

Why would people want to compare these two cameras. 70D is more a advanced camera, while the 7D is a semi-pro camera. Not your fault Saf, just wondering why people want to compare to cameras not ate NOT EQUAL.
