    It blows it away for video. Still photo reviews of the 70D are coming soon...
    Oh, and if you want to learn to use all those settings on your camera, check out my book Stunning Digital Photography (links in the description).

    The 5D Mark II's full frame sensor has far better image quality than any compact camera at all reasonable ISOs. My tests definitely show that, but if you'd like a second opinion, check out DXOMark.

    It totally depends on how exactly you're using them. My Photography Buying Guide (which you can buy using the 'WorldWide' link in the description) has a ton of info about using DSLR bodies and lenses for video. Also check my "Ultimate" Canon review for a comparison of more Canon DSLRs for video.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You make a good point; the 70D actually makes me really want the video focusing in one of my full-frame bodies, since their depth-of-field is so much more shallow and the quality is so much higher.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We did compare the 6D, but there's no noticeable difference in image quality between it and the 5D Mark III, so we only showed the 5D Mark III comparison. For focusing, it performed the same as the 7D that we show.
    Anyway, everything we say about the 5D III's image quality applies to the 70D, and everything we say about the 7D or 5D III's focusing applies to the 6D.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good point, Kage. I do have a discussion of it in my Buyer's Guide (the DSLR Buyer's Guide chapter). Technically, the Sony cameras aren't SLRs, they're SLT cameras, but better focus during video has (until now) been one of the huge advantages of the SLT architecture.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you listen carefully, we did, I just mention that over cameras are equivalent to simplify everything a bit. The 6D has the same video quality as the 5D Mark III, and the same ability to focus during video as either the 5D3 or the 7D. So, just imagine that we're talking about the 6D.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, the settings were exactly the same, and I allowed all the cameras to auto white balance. I did notice some differences, though I don't think I'll have any problem switching between them in multicam scenarios.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, it's awesome, and expensive. Check Chapters 2 and 7 in the Buyer's Guide at SDPCommunity*com for some other suggestions.

    Hi Tony! I wanted to comment on something about your videos, I've started watching your videos recently and I have to say, you got a nice energy that you put into your videos, you look very engaging, you feel so down to earth and honest with your opinions about the products, I do enjoy that a lot in a person, basically your videos speaks to me :) so keep up the wonderful works and keep smiling as always!

    TH-cam is being a bit of a pain about letting people switch to 1080p now (they're probably trying to reduce bandwidth costs)... but switch to 1080p, go full screen, and jump to 7:20. I'm confident you can see the difference (even at lower resolutions).

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We used the 70-200 on the beach walking scene (14:30) with the on-camera mic. I could hear my footsteps and an airplane, but no focusing or image stabilization sounds. If the on-camera mic didn't pick anything up, a Rhode mic definitely won't.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The face tracking flipped out and focused on the bookcase behind me... it's something to be aware of; I feel like I do need someone monitoring it during recording.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    True, but I really just meant that his walking videos don't demonstrate the 5D Mark II's autofocusing at all.

  • @weplayOldschool
    @weplayOldschool 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey tony...if you´d have to put the 4 cams on 4 places...where would they be? would the 5d mark III still be at number one or the 70d...when it comes to video of course.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    True, but what DigRevCam does is something very different from what I demonstrated. The 5D Mark II can't automatically follow focus. DigRevCam just follows on foot and keeps the camera roughly the same distance, and uses a high f/stop number to provide enough depth-of-field that you don't notice it's actually slightly out-of-focus... Notice he never uses shallow depth of field with moving shots.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I didn't indicate that it was the on-camera mic, it was a Sennheiser EW-100 G3 lav mic (directly into the camera). I generally don't have to process the sound shot in the video studio.
    The screencasts are pumped through a Zoom H4n and for that I do have to remove noise (because my PC makes sound)

  • @OMARCONDE

    Hi Tony, I see a small delay in displaying my 70d. alone on the screen, when playing all right. Is it normal that small delay ?. I come from a t5i and I see no lag. You could tell me if it is normal 70d ?. Greetings!

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, this doesn't impact the noise levels in the image, but as I mentioned to someone else, the 70D's face tracking did focus on the background at some point. Otherwise, to my eye, the cameras were all in focus.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    For still images, the 6D is equivalent to the 5D Mark II and 5D Mark III. They all have amazing still image quality that's far better than any of the crop cameras, including the 70D.
    For video quality, the 6D and 5D Mark III are the same, and the 70D is by far the best of the crop cameras.
    If you end up buying the camera from Amazon, do me a favor and use one of my links in the description!

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will do :). The sports & wildlife comparison will be coming soon. I've started the testing already, and I'll say that the focusing does work well even at f8... BUT you have to be using live view, and I've found it really hard to use live view with a big telephoto lens, at least handheld.
    I'm already planning to try it out with a tripod, so we'll see if that's easier.

    I too wish the provided the articulating screen on the 5D series, but they don't, so you have to decide which is more important to you. You can buy external LCD screens for the 5D3, which is what I use when I need to monitor at a different angle.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have used Neat Video a couple of times to reduce the noise in post, but yeah, the 7D is awful in low light. The 70D, even though it's still an APS-C sensor, does MUCh better.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The D7100 has better image quality than the 70D... but it's not all about image quality. The 70D beats the D7100 in many different ways.
    For detailed information about camera and lens features, and a discussion of Canon vs. Nikon vs. Sony, read my Photography Buying Guide (available using the 'Worldwide' link in the description).

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's interesting that you say that, because I've been having to add sharpening to the 5D3 when switching between it and another model of Canon DSLR...
    Ah, found this online: "The Mark III’s softness is simply the lack of artificial sharpness that came from the aliasing that plagued the 5D Mark II. This means that the footage takes sharpening in post even better than 5D Mark II footage, because there are fewer inherent artifacts to bring out."
    Thanks for the info, I'm still new to video...

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    During the side-by-side tests, the 70D seems to have lost track of my face and focused on something in the background... so that's definitely something to look out for, especially if you don't have a cameraman monitoring it. Obviously, Justin was trying to manage four cameras, but the focusing problems do help illustrate real-world performance.

    One of the best videos explaining the differences and advantage of the bodies. I own 7D and 70D.. they both are a great combo. I use the 7D for still shots and the 70D for still and Video. I am selling both to upgrade to full frame.. but now I am considering on keeping my 70D for videos.

    Thanks a lot for the reply. Yes I did hear it but actually I was talking about the inclusion as sample video as well. I have heard and saw some samples where it is shown that 5D Mark III did better job in controlling moire. Also I have 6D so wanted to compare with others. But I guess you are right I can compare considering 6D as 5D and except moire the video quality is on par with 5D Mark III. I have really enjoyed the video and thanks for make such useful reviews. looking forward to next one.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Either does great, but you need the 1.4X TC for the 300 f4, which jacks the price up substantially. I recommend the 400 f5.6. Check Chapters 2 and 7 of my Buyer's Guide at sdpcommunity*com.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually was a bit shocked, too. I've done some low light work with it, but largely in almost total darkness.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's definitely not true about the L lenses.... but it's true that I usually recommend EF-S lenses for the crop bodies. Check Chapter 7 of my Buyer's Guide at SDPCommunity*com for specific recommendations.

    I'm not sure, but it could have been a focusing issue. Justin was juggling four cameras, which isn't easy. Anyway, for that comparison, I would disregard sharpness and focus on the noise.

    On ebay, search for the 5D Mark II, and then filter the search with the "Sold Listings" option. Then, filter it to just Digital Cameras to see what they've actually sold for. Many sell for $1100-$1200.
    Check chapter 2 of my Buyer's Guide (sdpcommunity*com), specifically, "Is it Safe to Buy Used?" for some tips.
    I'll have a still image quality review for the 70D soon, but check my "Ultimate" Canon review for a comparison of still image quality of the 5D2... the 70D is about the same as the 7D.

    Tony, near the beginning of the video, are all the settings the same? The reason I ask is because the 7D appears to have a huge effect on skin texture and the overall color. I understand that you were using different lenses, but it's still an interesting test.

    I cannot agree with you. I have my 70D over 5 months now and I'm very disappointed from video quality. A lot of moire/aliasing and terrible noise on high ISO. 320 is top usable ISO for working in post. This camera is great, I love taking pictures with it, but video... Man, I'm so angry when I see results on monitor.

    • @ColonelRuiz
      @ColonelRuiz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a 70D myself and i was able to run iit on ISO 1250 with usable results for web videos. The camera requires a proper setup and post to get good quality out of it. If u used the default presets, i can understand your complaints

      ColonelRuiz , there's nothing to set up, the camera is noisy and that's it

    • @ColonelRuiz
      @ColonelRuiz 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every camera has noise and most consumer grade cameras are. But using them properly can still produce usable footage. Use a neutral profile or cinestyle, use the all-I format so you can reasonably grade, the noise levels at 1250 will be enough after denoising in post. The alternative being buying a $3000 camera

  • @awdmute

    I watched so many videos about canon cameras trying to decide what to buy I was sick of them but I wanted something comperable to the 7d which I previously used and really loved for 80%video 20%photo.
    After watching this one specifically I finally settled and picked up two (70d's) with the 18-135 kit lens.
    I have never been happier. These really do stomp all over the 7d in so many areas and I really thought the autofocus features were going to be gimmicky but I was way wrong.
    It is a monster and has led to some amazing videos that really make me look good.
    I used to have that conflagerated focus gear ring rig thing... it's terrible and every bit as complicated as you made it out to be. I will never use one again. ever....
    The camera is just perfect for what I do and honestly it's fun as hell to use. the versatility is what really sold me and I've wanted that flip/fold out screen ever since I first held a t3i. Plus it's touchscreen which is cheesy until you use it to pull focus.
    I could rave for hours about this camera but I wanted to say thanks, your video covered every single question I had about the specifics and real world usage that general tech specs don't quite cover.
    Thank you for all the coverage and helping me make my decision!
    p.s. that russian camera is beautiful.

    Couple of corrections: 5D Mark III maximum video shooting duration is the same as the 70D. In "IPB" mode, it's over 30 minutes. In "All-I" it is 11 minutes. The lens noise seems to be a big issue. Do we now have to go out and buy a bunch of new "STM" lenses? Is there any good STM glass out there for low light situations - constant f/2.8? You didn't mention the micro four thirds Panasonic GH3, which is a direct competitor to the 70D, and has been around since late 2012. It can record over 200 minutes in one go. And it has comparable touch screen features.

    The old limit (around 12 minutes), was because of the 4GB size limit of FAT32. Newer camera's don't have that anymore, because the camera makes a new file after 4GB. But every DSLR still has a 29:59 time limit, because of the law. Everything that can record 30:00 or longer is a video camera according to law and that costs more.

    You should do an entire segment on using the 70D to film fast moving cars, bikes, etc. This tends to blow away other cameras. I also found that the 70D in low light seemed very close to the 5DMII in your tests, which surprised me since I am think 5DMII as a low light champ, but it seems you think a 6D would be better (the 5DMIII is not in my budget). Very nice video.

    Theoretically, but the 70D seems to always break the files up... which wastes a lot of my time, because that's more files that need to be synched and edited on long shoots.
    Let's hope they change it for all the cameras with a BIOS update, or maybe the folks at Magic Lantern figure out a hack...

    Tony or Chelsea I know this is an older video but I have the opportunity of buying a Canon 5D mark 3 with a Canon 24 to 105 L-series lens and battery grip for $1500 shutter count is 10200, Would you say this is a good deal?

    The most comprehensive analysis of the dslr. Since im going to be making films i have decided to go with the 70 D because of the focusing system that blows away the 7D. To me you cantreally get everything in one package

    Hi Tony, when buying a used 7D does the shutter count matters? right now I'm looking at buying a used one with a shutter count of around 20k. Will this affect the camera because of that shutter count? or a 20k shutter count is still considered about fairly good camera? Thanks

    Although I dont like the 70D sensor that much, I must admit it is the best fit to my Glidecam HD400 & Smooth Shoooter arm and vest. I rarely touch the focus ring while gliding anywhere.

    Thanks.... Very in depth review. I'm going to check out the Black Magic cameras first... but 70D is on my hit list!

    Hi Tony, I'm interested in using this camera on a DJI Ronin steadycam, where of course it wouldn't be possible to use the 70D's great touch screen focusing feature. So is there a way of doing this remotely, for example is there an app that allows you to do the focusing from a tablet?

    Another review I saw talks about this. The 5d3 is softer until you apply sharpening in post, and then the difference is dramatic.

    I have no idea of photography but...5D III seems to be a BEAST for low light situations!

      If you're looking for a DSLR Fullframe grade camera for low light work, check out the Sony A7s. You wouldn't say that the 5DIII it's a beast anymore, TRUST ME.

    Nice video...I bought the 70D back in late August (one of the first released). I am a full time videographer (since 1994) and I'm used to the full size 3-Chip Broadcast cameras...The Canon 70D is super nice, but your point should be well taken to get a dedicated video camera if this is what you do. There's a lot more you can do with a dedicated model not to mention having a servo zoom lens...Mind you, the Canon 70D is excellent and I plan on using it with my other video cameras...I just wanted to amplify your point...Wouldn't mind talking shop sometime with you. Tony.... Guys! Please help! I am to buy a new camera for shooting some macro, landscapes and indoor children... I'm undecided between this 70d and the Sony A6000... Will you do a comparison? Are you able to help me decide? I'm thinking about the 11 fps on A6000, the 24 mpx sensor, the 170 focus points, etc versus this dual pixel, etc...
    Other readers that have these cameras can also advise me?
    Thank you, guys!

    Professional focus pullers shed a tear at what they're about to see 10:03.
    Plus recent 5D Mk III owners may get a bit bitter with this whipper-snapper 70D's focusing prowess.
