This game did the “Evil version of the player” so well. It threw me for a total loop when Ninetails started countering your brush, and even after he lost 8 tails, you had to glaive duel her to the death.
I like how this fight rewards you for getting really good at drawing the brush techniques. If you're quick enough at them, Ninetails can never finish her counter techniques in time. It's like you're saying "This is what a REAL master of the Celestial Brush looks like, pretender!" through the gameplay alone.
Honestly seeing Ninetails drawing on my own parchments motivated me to draw faster. She never actually did get to complete any speels because I just went "NOPE" and threw out all my brushes fast as I could
The problem with that is that in Japanese folklore nine-tailed foxes are females. They start off looking like a human female, and eventually receive a fox mask that allows them to transform into a fox, gaining one tail every 100 years, capping out at nine. They are a female species. Therefore, Ninetails must be a female.
That "EEEYOOO" yell at 0:08 which reoccurs throughout the song, the one that's so different from the soundtrack's usual "EEEYOOO" yells in terms of its sound and pitch, sounding more ethereal/mystical, really sets the mood of just how much more intense this boss fight is than all of the ones before it.
Ninetails definitely felt like a faster fight than Orochi was, but I still think Orochi was the better of the two. I feel like I took out Ninetails way too quickly knowing their gimmick (i.e. "brush quickly so that Ninetails can't hijack your canvas, use lightning to fry them when they raise nine-strike, then smack the Evil Raus with your weapons repeatedly until Ninetails has only one tail left, then just smack Ninetails normally.") Pity we didn't get to face Lechku and Nechku one more time, though. The fight with those owls was *dope*.

Orochi never really gave me any trouble, personally, while Ninetails' aggression and pressure threw me entirely for a loop because most of the bosses in the game aren't like that. Orochi was a bit annoying to figure out how to make each head roar, but Ninetails being constantly approaching and attacking much quicker than any other boss makes her maybe not the most difficult, but definitely one of the most difficult in the game, at least for me. I'd say the Twin Demons are harder just because you have to keep an eye on both of them.

The Nine tailed fox is actually found in a lot of Asian mythology. As such there are good and evil ones. The good ones are just silly tricksters while the nasty ones...don't even get me started! The good ones in Japan's lore serve Inari as familiars. Each falls under a different element as well.
I always LOVE ditto battles. Two combatants, with the same abilities, must utilize their creativity in order to defeat the other. It becomes AMAZING when one takes advantage of the power's strengths and weaknesses.
dude, you even pokemon? ditto is scarfed so it goes first and can only use the same move 5 times. if you have a move that is super effective against you, you're fucked. like mega sceptile. its even easier because they both can see the moveset. it gets tricky when one carries sucker punch, though.
i really like how desperate and dirty Ninetails was, the way they murdered their way through stealing stuff and your brush techniques and when they die its revealed its just a fox, like damn. Once the ruse with Rao was up it did a mad rush specifically to kill US using OUR techniques and that stings. Not to mention it looks like it was just a fox but it got ahold of 8 people's spirits and once they tasted power they wanted more. This fight really sticks with me for that. I think Okami is really great for standalone moments like that, like they did with the Kaguya quest (bless her) edit: thinking about it, the Counterbrush bit was really great, reminds me of Transistor where theres that one boss that is just you and thats terrifying and terribly cool
This song puts more goosebumps because in part you are avenging all those who suffered directly or indirectly from the atrocities of Kyubi (Himiko, the real Tsuzurao, King Wada and the ship crew killed, Tobi destiny, Otohime became dragon, Kaguya and the citizens of Sei'an by the fog of Blight that was under the orders of the Ninetails) I love this brush-to-brush battle.
Kyubi was the best boss fight of Okami (a corrupted imitation of Ama at first, then a lightspeed train who rolled on one of my mystic stomachs the first time) as well as having the coolest dunjon and build up. SPOILER Not to mention she had an impressive actual body count putting Sephiroth to shame: killed Himiko and Tsuzurao (the reveal for that one was creepy and sad), indirectly killing Wadatsumi/the Water Dragon because of his fox tubes and deleting Tobimaru when he played racing with Ama one time too many. The story was at it's darkest when Kyubi stepped in (I knew "Tsuzurao" was suspicious and likely traitorous, but I never thought she was herself the big bad guy of the story arc, fooling everyone). Well done Clover/Platinium.
I love the beginning of this song. It starts with this mysterious, almost celestial sound, likely due to it playing while Ninetails mimics a celestial brush god. Then after about 10 seconds of buildup, it hits you with the strongest _EEEYYYYOOOOO_ in the game, which launches the rest of the instruments into action as Ninetails charges at you. Gets my adrenaline going every time!
I was obsessed with this game when I was 13. A little over a decade later, I'm coming back to the OST to help with ideas for music production. So glad this game is getting a true sequel - Okamiden was fine, but wasn't quite it.
Gotta love the concept of this battle: A demon that impersonates a brush god in every aspect, he hides in a constelation, tries to troll your brush techs with his own brush AND he has the same background of the brush gods. Though the fight itself has been perfected on Okamiden, as the enemy this time can pull out a sheet of paper of his own and draws a heck of a lot faster. (its not ninetails though, but something cooler)

If there was any boss fight in this game I could go back to, it would be this one. The way the game set it up, the menacing aura of Oni Island, and how Ninetails had very similar abilities to Amaterasu. I enjoyed it a lot.
Not only that, but Kitsune with nine-tails who do not pass away from their own choice start to hurt the place around them, meaning that Ninetails was probably around to recieve a tenth tail, due to the fact that she was fighting for her life and to keep doing damage to the area around her. I also have to assume she was a Celestial Kitsune, which makes her even more evil "Turn from evil to good is worse from bieng born good and turning evil"

I copied my save to another file after fighting Ninetails, just so I could fight her again whenever I wanted. This fight blew me away, between the music, the counter-brushing, the setting, and just the general strategy was so much fun.
Some nine-tailed foxes depicted by popular culture: Ninetails (Okami obviously), Kurama (Naruto), Ninetales (Pokémon), Keatons (Majora's Mask, three-tailed), Catarina Devon's devil fruit, Inu Inu no Mi model Kyubi no Kitsune (One Piece).
The way I view ninetails as a boss changed drastically when I learned what kitsune actually do in Japanese mythology. Namely shape shifting, wooing people, and possession. As well as either being good or bad. It explains at least loosely why Rao was genuinely so busty.
The first moment of this music, that pause before the first "eyooo" makes a perfect moment in a duel. Just the calm in wich both fighters unseathes their weapons and prepare before the clash.

I always imagine some crazy pecking order between the Okami bosses. It's something along the lines of, 1. Yami 2. Ninetails 3. Orochi 4. Lechku and Nechku (Sorry if I spelt their names wrong) 5. Blight 6. Crimson Helm 7. Spider Queen That's just me lol
I feel like Orochi would rank higher than Ninetails, since I'm pretty sure it's said in the Bestiary that Orochi was responsible for Ninetails gaining her power. I could be wrong though.
Orochi is basically Yami's direct subordinate and responsible for most of the bad things that happen in the game. Ninetails was one of the spirits released from his corpse.
I was freaking out when I saw it with Rao. "I HAVE TO FIGHT THAT THING!?" Then I fought it and sat there wondering how she got killed so easily. Like, did she not have exorcism slips back then or maybe it was just too fast for her....? Also, am I the only one who didn't trust Rao or Himiko from the beginning? I thought Himiko was going to be something sinister when she turned around. The save point in front of her room didn't help that theory....
Franceska Miller i trusted rao up until the moment that she appeared underwater immediately after i got the fox rods. THAT i thought was very suspicious. how did she know that i had succeeded or even where i was? she seemed desperate to get them and that’s when i figured something must have been up
After your fight with evil rao, I think it was mentioned in a narration that Himiko knew that ninetails was out to get her and knew through the crystal ball about rao’s death, but her dying was part of her plan to find where Oni Island was so that amaterasu could eventually defeat ninetails. Basically, Himiko’s death was part of her plan to lead Amaterasu to the hidden Oni Island (Ninetail rules over this island).
Ok, I feel kinda nerdy here, but, every time I hear the beginning of this song, it always sounds like the beginning chime when Aku shows up in Samurai Jack. X)

Its definitely worth the buy. I havent beaten it yet but its good enough that I made that judgement. I'm about 40 hours in probably 60% through I assume. I'm certainly hopping on the chance to play this game again on the go.

It costed approx US$62, so it wasn't the cheapest book I've bought, but the works are so beautiful, and I haven't been able to stop flicking through it since. I was extremely fortunate in finding it, considering I'd say that the store would have been one of the only ones in the country to stock it.

I did hear about Kitsune in my book of mythic beastiary being cat-like creatures that took over a maiden's body and can shape shift, if I remember correctly. but I don't recall it mentioning the diversity in tail numbers; however I suppose the shape shifting implies it.
@DarkenMidnacrystal Evil Rao and Ninetails are two different bosses. You get the first thunder ability from Gekigami on Oni Island before Ninetails, so no, you do not need thunder to battle Evil Rao.

If you compare the style of line for Amaterasu vs Ninetails, it's normal to associate the curved lines of Amaterasu with the feminine, whereas Ninetails is more angular and could be associated with the masculine. I like to refer to Ninetails as 'it'- much more suitable for its evil nature.
@TheVaporeonrules234 Amaterasu being a wolf here was a pun in the original Japanese: Okami means either 'wolf' or 'great god' depending on how you pronounce it.
Kind of a shame that Ninetails has the potential to be incredibly easy if you have the right tools. In the first phase when you destroy its tails, you can take out an entire group of the broken-off tails with Exorcism Slips just by getting them to cluster together around you. You can blast each group away with one or two Exorcism Slip Ls. In the second phase once Ninetails was down to one tail and revealed its regular fox form, I just went ham with physical attacks from my Exorcism Beads, only using the brush to zap the fiend when it extended the sword from its mouth, which actually damages it as well as stopping its attack. I needed no other Brush techniques besides Thunderstorm.
Thing is. She never got the chance to counter brush me or use the ice brush, i was too filled with rage going through the entire dungeon and was quick with my brush strokes

love the music. Favorite music of the game, which is freaking amazing! Luv the game also. Ninetails is my favorite boss and she/he is the funnest boss in the game. Ninetails is also a very hard boss to beat. Hell, I say she/he is the hardest boss of the game. I give her/him a difficult rating of 5/5. If anyone haven't played Okami, I recommended to u if u like action/adventure and wolves.

I always imagine some crazy pecking order between the Okami bosses. It's something along the lines of,
1. Yami
2. Ninetails
3. Orochi
4. Lechku and Nechku (Sorry if I spelt their names wrong)
5. Blight
6. Crimson Helm
7. Spider Queen

I feel like Orochi would rank higher than Ninetails, since I'm pretty sure it's said in the Bestiary that Orochi was responsible for Ninetails gaining her power. I could be wrong though.

Orochi and Ninetails are both around the same rank tbh....
Orochi is basically Yami's direct subordinate and responsible for most of the bad things that happen in the game. Ninetails was one of the spirits released from his corpse.

I love that bell sound at the very beginning.
In-game, the bell doesn't play in the fight proper, but rather when you draw Nintail's constellation. It's an awesome boss intro.
I always thought it sounded like a clock striking midnight. :O But it gives a really ominous intro to what’s about to go down
I was freaking out when I saw it with Rao. "I HAVE TO FIGHT THAT THING!?" Then I fought it and sat there wondering how she got killed so easily. Like, did she not have exorcism slips back then or maybe it was just too fast for her....?
Also, am I the only one who didn't trust Rao or Himiko from the beginning? I thought Himiko was going to be something sinister when she turned around. The save point in front of her room didn't help that theory....

I didn't trust Raothe first time I met her but Himiko after you find out why she locked herself away became very likable to me
Franceska Miller i trusted rao up until the moment that she appeared underwater immediately after i got the fox rods. THAT i thought was very suspicious. how did she know that i had succeeded or even where i was? she seemed desperate to get them and that’s when i figured something must have been up
After your fight with evil rao, I think it was mentioned in a narration that Himiko knew that ninetails was out to get her and knew through the crystal ball about rao’s death, but her dying was part of her plan to find where Oni Island was so that amaterasu could eventually defeat ninetails. Basically, Himiko’s death was part of her plan to lead Amaterasu to the hidden Oni Island (Ninetail rules over this island).
I always felt suspicious about Rao. From her prayer slips to her wanting the fox rods and everything about her design.

This game is incredible. The graphics are amazing, the characters are unique, and it really feels like your in the game when you play it. The storyline is great too, it's got several twists and turns that you'll never see coming. :3

Its definitely worth the buy. I havent beaten it yet but its good enough that I made that judgement. I'm about 40 hours in probably 60% through I assume. I'm certainly hopping on the chance to play this game again on the go.
@DRAGOOOOOOOONNNNNNNN I bought it from a specialist pop culture shop in Melbourne (unfortunately they don't ship outside of Australia). It costed approx US$62, so it wasn't the cheapest book I've bought, but the works are so beautiful, and I haven't been able to stop flicking through it since. I was extremely fortunate in finding it, considering I'd say that the store would have been one of the only ones in the country to stock it.

I did hear about Kitsune in my book of mythic beastiary being cat-like creatures that took over a maiden's body and can shape shift, if I remember correctly. but I don't recall it mentioning the diversity in tail numbers; however I suppose the shape shifting implies it.

@DarkenMidnacrystal Evil Rao and Ninetails are two different bosses. You get the first thunder ability from Gekigami on Oni Island before Ninetails, so no, you do not need thunder to battle Evil Rao.

@DRAGOOOOOOOONNNNNNNN My Okami artbook explicitly refers to Ninetails as 'he' (though it's not always the wisest to trust English translations). If you compare the style of line for Amaterasu vs Ninetails, it's normal to associate the curved lines of Amaterasu with the feminine, whereas Ninetails is more angular and could be associated with the masculine. I like to refer to Ninetails as 'it'- much more suitable for its evil nature.
@TheVaporeonrules234 Amaterasu being a wolf here was a pun in the original Japanese: Okami means either 'wolf' or 'great god' depending on how you pronounce it.

Kind of a shame that Ninetails has the potential to be incredibly easy if you have the right tools.
In the first phase when you destroy its tails, you can take out an entire group of the broken-off tails with Exorcism Slips just by getting them to cluster together around you. You can blast each group away with one or two Exorcism Slip Ls. In the second phase once Ninetails was down to one tail and revealed its regular fox form, I just went ham with physical attacks from my Exorcism Beads, only using the brush to zap the fiend when it extended the sword from its mouth, which actually damages it as well as stopping its attack.
I needed no other Brush techniques besides Thunderstorm.

Thing is. She never got the chance to counter brush me or use the ice brush, i was too filled with rage going through the entire dungeon and was quick with my brush strokes
ninetails is my fav boss in okami. idk why. mabye its his taunting in the begining then ammy goes in and whoops his butt

@hjt091 Did I ever say there was? The cat, at least, is sometimes included as part of the legend. Ninetails comes from a different Japanese legend.
love the music. Favorite music of the game, which is freaking amazing! Luv the game also. Ninetails is my favorite boss and she/he is the funnest boss in the game. Ninetails is also a very hard boss to beat. Hell, I say she/he is the hardest boss of the game. I give her/him a difficult rating of 5/5. If anyone haven't played Okami, I recommended to u if u like action/adventure and wolves.
