    Same, I also test drove several Linux distros last week!
    First I moved from Windows 11 to EndeavourOS on my main desktop. Then I tried installing it on my Macbook Pro 2017, but I couldn't get the WiFi to work. I installed the drivers (and alternate drivers), made sure the WiFi card was detected and turned on, but the Network Connections manager just didn't detect it. So then I tried Fedora 40, Zorin OS, and Pop!_OS, but all of them had similar issues and their own quirks. Then I tried to Linux Mint, and everything just works.
    I moved to Linux Mint on my main desktop, too. The Xfce desktop environment feels like home, and I love the built-in visual customization and keyboard shortcut manager. It feels fast.

    My own path was Zorin 16 -> Manjaro -> Arch -> EndeavourOS.
    But I think that what people mistake for "the perfect distro for them" is when they are on their 3rd or 4th distro, they have learned so much about Linux, that they could make any distro work for them. So it's more a case of "learning" than finding the best distro. :-) (imho)

    I chose an Arch based distro as my first and current Linux distro when I switched to Linux. Vanilla Arch is easy to install these days, but it's annoying to set up, especially if you don't know yet what you want as a new Linux user. I can recommend Garuda Linux as a Arch based distro for new users. It comes pre-configured with very sensible configs and it has a fantastic update routine.
    Here are my reasons why I would recommend Arch based distros for any user - new or otherwise:
    The repository + AUR: The most complete package source of any distro. On other distros I've had to use flatpaks for some things - and those start super slow.
    Package manager: Pacman is IMO the best package manager.
    Rolling releases: I like getting the newest versions of software and not having to do major distro upgrades.

      My goodness that is some good information, do you have a TH-cam you do videos on I would watch them!! Thanks so much for all of the information! The only issue I have with Arch is complexity, but with a complete Repository I will have to give it another try! Thanks so much for watching also!

    • @Xaito
      @Xaito 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@sherrilltechnology No, I don't do youtube, just watch it. At the end of the day Arch isn't any more or less complex than other distros. It just doesn't have many packages installed and/or configured out of the box. Arch is bare bones by design. It's meant for people to customize to their liking instead of shipping opinionated default setups. There are however Arch based distros that build upon that, similar how Mint is based on Ubuntu, which in turn is based on Debian.

  • @svendyy
    @svendyy 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Linux mint and arch is completely different. Comparing these oses is kinda not correct. The main advantage of mint is being user friendly and stable, while arch is completely opposite, it's not user friendly and it's unstable, but it gives you a lot of freedom and choice and you configure everything just as you like from scratch, while on mint everything is already configured by default instead of you.
    Some random arch user that truly enjoys this freedom and know how to make arch work is imo VERY unlikely to switch to mint.

    • @sherrilltechnology
      @sherrilltechnology  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That is true they are completely different but after using both of them I can say that they each have their own appeal and I try to always keep an open mind on Linux Distros as I just want to learn new things and maybe try to influence some people to at least try both Arch and Mint and that would be one less person giving money to the Microsoft Machine anyways, thanks so much for the comment and watch!

    My path was Windows -> Mint -> Manjaro Cinnamon.
    So, basically I used Mint to get used to Linux while having a very Windows-Like experience (in terms of low barrier to entry!), and then switched to Arch using Manjaro, but keeping the Mint-Desktop - so the user-Interface stayed the same. That was somewhat smooth.

    My MacBook pro 2015 "like" PopOS, Zorin and Mint.
    Because on this systems work well, but I have many bugs and problems, because Apple block on BIOS running iGPU and force to run AMD GPU.. so FANS spin like a crazy and temperature are very hot, on TH-cam I have 70/80 Celsius...
    One fix is FAN mod for MacBook Fans, then is not to noisy but temp are high.
    Second I use rEFInd to boot, and MacBook fix on start, then system now find iGPU, but in the end I can't power off GPU and run ONLY on iGPU Intel, to have silent laptop and low temperature.
    On MacOS MacBook run quiet, because use ONLY iGPU and on TH-cam I have max 50 Celsius and FAN are silent.

    Arch isn't for everyone. Arch is better in the way that you create exactly what it is that you want. If you are complaining about how much time you have to invest . . . then you really should stick to mint. That isn't an insult, but each has their own positives and the positives of mint are . . . you don't have to try very hard. You can plug in your printer and use it . . . (unless its a canon lol) and you can install on your laptop and the wifi just works. So, yeah . . . good. Mint is better for people who just want to get on their computer and use the software. I still say if you want to switch someone from mac or windows that mint . . . not ubuntu should be the landing spot. The nomenclature not only in terms of vocabulary but layout is much closer than on ubuntu. Cinnamon looks and feels more like windows than Gnome.
    That being said, what i mentioned above . . . mint is terrible for the other types. I call people who use distros like arch or gentoo or even freebsd . . . the "back yard mechanics" of the computing world. We like to see if we can make this ford engine fit in that dodge truck with a chevy's transmission . . . . we like to know our file structure, we like to know EVERY process that is running.
    I have been on pure vanilla arch for about 2 years now . . . and although I still run mint on one of my laptops . . . I will never go back. The way I have arch set up at this point . . . i can reformat my system (minus download time) from an empty drive with about 15 minutes worth of work. Everything I do is mirrored to my secondary hd. Every package I personally install automatically gets logged in a package list I created . . . that i can just use as an install template. Every configuration file gets copied to the appropriate place using a python script I put together. Nobody else though uses a system quite like I do.
    If I am hooking up a non computer nerd friend with a free os just so they can get by, i put mint on their system and never hear any complaints about it . . . and that makes mint awesome. My arch setup doesn't look or feel like anything you have ever seen, and everything works . . . and that makes Arch awesome.
    There is no "better" here. It is about preference.

      That may be true but remember the things we learn today will help us with things tomorrow I rarely use Windows anymore just for 1 game and that is it, I use Mac for my job and Mac for editing videos and then Linux for everything else.

    Yes. No. Define better. When you leave your diapers behind, come join Nix and NixOS.

      I love nixos and the idea behind it and I used it for a while, the issue I run into it though is that if you run into an issue where you need to run some app that isn't available on nixpkgs then you have a lot of work to get that app working since it doesn't follow the standard structure or run generic binaries out of the box. I ran into a few issues like that since I like fiddling with new and obscure apps and I didn't feel like I could handle having to mantain packages for the apps that I needed or that my old laptop could handle doing that.

      All jokes apart, we are amazingly lucky we have so many distributions to choose from depending our needs and preferences. Nix and NixOS isn’t definitely for everyone, and in my case I’m willing to deal with the ton of issues NixOS has because I simply can’t get enough of it. Some of this issues are real issues, others are a consequence of how it works. Thanks for spreading the Tux gospel!

    I try 11 versions linux in 1 month, and most completed are Manjaro and Mint...i like Debian all versions, zorin is nice fast but somehow something missing, and only what dislike is Ubuntus.

      I agree Zorin is missing a little something, but still a great OS!! Thanks so much!
