I have been wanting to make this laser FOREVER and i could have made a hour long video on it. But dont worry, I have much more planned for this laser!

There were never any planes in danger and I can prove it with science. First of all, we never turned the beam on more than 4 amps (50 watts)because we were having cooling issues and couldn't really monitor it up on the car.. (we tried 6 amps once but it was too bright.)
So assuming the beam stayed perfectly collimated, the beam would have an area of 430 square centimeters. If the laser was running at 25% power (4 amps/50 watts) that would be about 110mw/cm2 from the telescope. However, your pupil is only half this size fully open, so a pilot could theoretically receive a 50mw/cm2 exposure. A decent amount, but you have to remember even the smallest plane is traveling 150 miles per hour which would limit total exposure time to only 3ms( time it takes to cross a 9 inch beam). That puts it at the cusp of the maximum exposure limit, which is defined as "about 10% of the dose that has a 50% chance of creating damage under worst-case conditions." So even under perfect conditions, this would still be 10x less than the exposure that carries a risk of damage. That's assuming perfect conditions, but in reality it was a hazy night, the laser would not be perfectly collimated, the atmosphere would distort the beam, the windows in the airplane would deflect some of the beam, unless the pilot was staring directly at the beam they would receive a smaller dose, I tried to keep the beam moving when up in the sky, and most planes are moving faster. all of this meaning the pilot would be exposed to a much lower amount of laser energy in the real world than under perfect conditions. even at full power this laser is still within the safety factor of the maximum exposure limit. Plus do you know the odds of hitting a plane with a laser when your trying not to? just pick a random star in the sky and wait for a plane to fly over it.

If you do buy a powerful laser, I urge you to be extremely careful, you will blind yourself/someone if you hit them in the eye for even one second or less. I think the reason he had the car there was to act as a last resort to block the light from hitting the road, also I would guess that his focal point is pretty small at that close of distance so even a few feet beyond the target it wouldn't do much damage to an object, like a car, in a short duration.

China makes better lasers than the USA and can produce them a lot cheaper. Most of the ones used by the general public and professionals alike come out of China. This includes gas lasers commonly found in CNC cutters. There are very few artisan glass blowers here in the United States that can make the tubes.

Uhm....he (well the actual engineers in the background that allow him to play the clown on camera) strapped the out put end of the fiber to the eyepiece of a telescope, made a front plate to support one end and a support with long bolts and springs to fine tune the orientation supporting the back the telescope for aiming, and ran a toothed timing belt over the focuser knob so a stepper motor can tune the focus in situ. The smaller camera scope would have probably been more rigidly mounted to the main casing structure, squared to the front plate, with its own focuser stepper, and a web cam or RPi cam on the eyepiece. I mean, these arent new concepts, its a pan tilt mount, a camera, a laser, a pair of telescopes, 4 stepper driver boards, an arduino...apparently (not really needed unless that joystick was modified so the potentiometers were directly accessible which an arduino could read on its analog pins)... If the question is can you shine a laser through a telephone, yes it been done before, a lot. If its can you strap a telescope to an automated pointing device, again yes, that is how goto and star tracker mounts work. There isnt much here beyond that. Honestly Im a bit disappointed he needed to be wired to the thing....
But, uh, if the question is how did you make that so I can build my own..... Im afraid the answer is in the form of this LPT: if you cant suss out how it was built..... probably not the best idea to be thinking about playing with 200w directed energy weapons.... stick to the

Publicly available flight trackers will not track all aircraft. Lots of air traffic isn’t tracked on apps. The only real safe way is to clear it with the FAA. He could have ruined peoples lives just because he wanted to play around with a laser. Rant over- sorry I’m a pilot and know all too well the dangers of lasers and this has me triggered

Legally he should have filed a NOTAM and possibly obtained a waiver from the FAA. Brilliant lights in the sky require a NOTAM and waiver. Would have been a sad night had he disabled something like a Mediflight which would not be listed on flight trackers.
