Um no lol. Eventually the kid would try this at home and hurt themselves. It literally happens all the time with viral stem videos. If it's even remotely dangerous you will have hundreds of kids getting hurt.
@@Imaboss8ball With all things worth doing, there is some risk involved. Can't stick foam pads on every corner. Do you suggest we ban stairways, electrical outlets, and anything that might light a fire? Life isn't safe, but we can't just hide in our bed under the blankets forever.

@@styropyro Interesting! I always thought about to "limit" laser length, that beam always be fixed length by turn it on and off very fast and precise in time. Is it even possible?
Can I just say, it is intensely gratifying to know that, somewhere, out in the wilds of the North American continent, there is a mad scientist doing all the things I dreamed of doing as a kid, but never had the chance to do. It is so important for a world to contain eccentric, affable people who have the potential to end worlds, but just don't. “This beam spreads out too quickly to be much of a fire hazard from far away, but this *problem* can be fixed.” No one hates safety like this man hates safety
These are around 2kw, modern military lasers are essentially the same just with a bunch of them funneled together with fiber optic splitters hooked up backwards to reach a couple mega watts. The chemical lasers of the 90's were a dead end tech and are now quite obsolete.
The US spent 100s of millions fitting one to a 747. Literally the whole plane cabin was filled with the machine to make the laser. Same issue as pyro had though, keeping the beam steady. They do have them fitted to a ship and even some concept apc’s. The English navy have one that is actually deployed I believe

@@theKashConnoisseur fair point. Everything is controlled and (for the most part) contained. The most important thing is to never hold them at an angle above zero and/or at waist level. The second most important rule is having a proper laser dump but due to the focus lens it's relatively easy to "contain" the beam energy.
He's so smart he probably knows how to use the laser like a hot shot firefighter would use a flame thrower to burn and create a line around the fire to stop it from moving and put it out.
Laser ablation is a handy thing, we use it in geology to get extremely small sample areas for chemical analysis (LA-ICP-MS if anyone is interested). You can sample down to a few micrometres, which can let us see chemical changes within a single tiny crystal, and because it's a laser it's pretty quick for bulk analysis too. Our lasers are obviously much smaller than this though!

I thought it was dumb when the military put giant lasers on their ships, but if you can build this in your backyard with stuff you bought online, I have no doubt the military can build something even more insane. Awesome video!

Ya, the US military is spending billions on a laser gun research, while this guy built one for a couple of thousand bucks. heh This will definitely take down drones from the sky.
I'm pretty sure the power source needs to plug in to something or carry an EV's worth of batteries to be that mobile, but like a truck mounted laser on an f150 lightning seems very doable. I think the cybertruck has higher output power from the plugs so it might work better.
@@georgepal9154 well, it's a 2 kW laser; assuming 50% efficiency, your setup would need to provide 4 kW of power to the system. in the grand scheme of things, that's not a ton of power--the question is, how much energy storage will you have?

Can I just say, it is intensely gratifying to know that, somewhere, out in the wilds of the North American continent, there is a mad scientist doing all the things I dreamed of doing as a kid, but never had the chance to do. It is so important for a world to contain eccentric, affable people who have the potential to end worlds, but just don't. I totally get that it is horribly energy inefficient but it has to beat out the staggering costs of drills like the one used for the Kola Super deep bore hole.
At this point I almost want to build it myself but that much electricity makes me more nervous than the laser dangers do.
I have a couple of electrically savvy friends I need to talk to but I'm getting kinda psyched at the idea. If I can find the time and space for the idea I'm going to try it, provided it gets any kind of interesting I'll try my hand at making a video out of it.
