  • RV Living Full Time is hard enough in a small space. Now add a broken bedroom Schwintek Lippert slide out, making your bedroom a tight squeeze, with no dresser, climbing over bed to get to your closet, not to mention the other closet unusable!
    That is how we moved into our Grand Design Solitude full time mid February, 2020 - the day you know what was officially named.
    This story is about how Grand Design, Lippert, and La Mesa saved the day for us. And who let us down. Heroes and Zeros.

      Buying warranties makes as much sense as showering with a raincoat. Much more sense to take the exact sum of money you gave to them, put that to the side, and refresh it as repairs are made. I don’t understand why smart people have not figured this out.

      Looks like I’m going to be out of pocket for the repair the warranty on our 2022 expired as we learned from GD today. @extremlylucky999 ; in concurrence with the idea of setting the money aside for incidentals.

    I also had a great experience with Grand Design. We were at the GD rally with our 2015 303 5th wheel. We were having some minor things serviced at the rally by GD service team. The tech noticed a small are under the wardrobe slide that was slightly bulging. The service manager then came over to look at it and said the sidewall was starting to delaminate. The coach was about 3 years old at this time. And said they would repair it at no charge. So we scheduled to be repaired at GD service center in Indiana the next spring. GD sent a truck to my house in Wisconsin picked up the coach replaced the entire side wall, had to remove both sides and also replaced the front cap due to The decals were cracking. They also keep me informed of the time line and sent me pictures of the whole process. Then brought it back to my house. It looks perfect you can’t tell it was ever worked on and it been 3 years and still perfect. I tell this to people and they can’t believe a company would even do this. So when it comes time for a new RV I think you know who will be getting my business. Thanks again GD for great customer service.

    I was a Cummins Service Supervisor for several years. I had to deal with aftermarket warranties. Every one of them were a pain in the butt to deal with. It’s very difficult to get them to pay for anything. One must really read the fine print. One example I recall was a leak at a fuel pump. After troubleshooting we found the fuel pump mounting O ring seal was leaking. The customer had coverage for fuel pump leaks. The insurance co said it wasn’t the pump that was leaking it was the mounting O ring so they wouldn’t cover it. Typical insurance company. “We cover everything “ except for whatever your problem is.

      Rambladesman Moe 💯 We read the exclusions but didn’t think that they could easily blame anything on a loose bolt. It’s an RV. They couldn’t mean that? But they did.       R'Moe...wonder if you were ours. LOL... We had that issue not too long ago....LOL but Our Cat Dealer was able to get our covered by our insurance.

    Aftermarket warranties resemble shams and my one and only warranty on a used 40’ DP was worthless. Fortunately I bought from a dealer with a conscience and good business ethics and when the warranty company puled their crap over a failed fridge unit, he absorbed the replacement with a bug apology and a correctly working fridge.

    What a great story guys especially for not giving up at any point in time. Having things like this happen is a reality of RV living. Other things are in count down mode, life in general plus you have to deal with the followup calls for these types of mechanical failures. Proud of you for making sure you were treated right by everyone you put your money and faith in. This should be on the full-time 101 course list - especially, your not to be missed comment of spending 2 years researching before you bought.

    Always nice to hear a positive owner experience about the RV industry. I was a technician for La Mesa and learned that the customers willing to work direct with the manufacturer have the most success with getting major repairs covered and done correctly. Navigating the maze of dealer and manufacturer departments, personnel and process can be daunting.

    Excellent video!! We have always stayed away from extended warranties because we have heard they are filled with so many loop holes. It was great to hear that Grand Design stands behind their products. We have been looking at one of their smaller travel trailers.

    Thank for sharing your experience! We bought our 2019 Solitude 377MBS in 2019, but it was over a year old, it came off the line in late 2018 and the previous owner had it just about a year, long enough to work out the kinks and have GD fix some things. We had a problem with our furnace, we tried troubleshooting ourselves to no avail, we called out a mobile tech who found the issue and repaired it easily. Grand Design offered to pay for the repair even though we are outside the warranty and not the original owners!
    So far, we are very happy with Grand Design. We have been stationary for 7 months while getting our house ready to sell. We will be able to take off soon and anticipate more issues along the way, especially once we are traveling more. We are confident that Grand Design will continue to stand behind their product!

      Downsizing Makes Cents oh really, how odd about the frames! We haven’t had any of those loose at all and our toddler sure likes to “test” them. We are two days away from the house hitting the MLS! It’s so exciting but has been so much work! I consider the solitude our home but I know that pulling away from the house and acreage for the last time is going to be surreal.

    Great video and channel. You were in my feed on TH-cam and my wife and I just watched your awning, slide out and broken suspension videos. It sure seems like luck is not on your side. We bought a GD Reflection six years ago and had only a few minor issues. Traded up to a 2019 Solitude 310GK two years ago and had a few issues but they were minor and GD took great care of us. I had the Morryde Independent Suspension added last summer with disc brakes. Very happy especially the disc brakes. Also added the washer dryer combo and would recommend. Hope your luck is great in 2021!

      Doug, are full time experience has definitely had some set backs - we also had all our Florida State park reservations canceled at the beginning of COVID.
      We would like to upgrade our suspension for sure. We actually just got the rest of our leaf springs done- we touch on that in our next video.
      As for washer and dryer, we added a lot of weight with our lithium and solar so we probably won’t do that. Space and weight is always an issue.
      We need some more luck for sure. But then again, it could be worse - we are in the keys now 😃.

    Nicely covered. I’m in love with GD and have been for a few years. I would sell our 2014 Coachman Chapparal and buy a Solitude in a NY minute! But Momma says no........ I’ll keep working on her. Again, happy this all worked out for you. I’m now a subscriber.

    Watching this has convinced us that GD is the way to go. If they cover something that is out of warranty that just shows you that you can trust them. Looking forward to joining the GD family soon. Now the hard part picking the right unit for us! We too are 50 somethings getting ready to retire and go full-time!

      Bryan, I suggest you join Facebook groups fir the specific rig you are looking for. We joined the Grand Design Solitude group. That way you get lots of different views. No rig is perfect but if you reach out to Grand Design, they at least try to help.

    Although watching your hubby struggle to push the broken slide in gave me some angst-filled flashbacks, I loved hearing about your experience! Thank you, so much, for sharing! I hope it’s okay to share our experience, here? We bought a Grand Design, after a couple years of research and hearing what great customer service they have. We got a Solitude 390RK-R, sold our house, and hit the road full time. We bought a 2021, in mid-2020, and have had problem after problem. The first time it rained, before we even hit the road, we had a leak in the shower from a skylight that was cracked AND a mini-river running into living area from an outdoor outlet that was never sealed. 2 months in, our stove/oven stopped working, when we were on the road. My husband is an amazing handyman and can fix just about anything. He found wires that had come loose, reconnected them, and it has been working fine since. After 3 months on the road, one of our kitchen slides stopped working....wouldn't go in or out. We had to drive 3 states away to get it repaired, because the other dealerships were a couple months out to even get us in. (I'm sure this is a direct result of SO many RV's being sold between April and July of last year.) It took us over 6 weeks to get it in for diagnosis, get the warranty work approved, have the slide components manufactured, and get it repaired. (After watching other videos, I’m thinking that might have been a record time?) We are full-timers and tried to explain to Grand Design and to the dealership (the one that we bought it from and where we took it to get repaired) that we could not just leave it at the dealership for an undetermined amount of time and pay for hotels. They worked with us, and we were able to stay in our RV at an RV park across the street from the dealership, so we could get it right in when the slide components were in. What we didn't expect was to have to wait a week (through the crazy winter storm of Texas), then spend 3 days in a hotel, while they "couldn't get to it just yet." It was bad timing, for sure. In our first 6 months, we've had several things just "fall off" inside our trailer (crown molding above the sofa, trim in SO many places, window valance that was not secured, the mirror above the sofa that just dropped off while we were sitting, etc), which has been a huge disappointment. After hearing how wonderful the quality of GD trailers is, we have not had the same experience. The biggest disappointment of all, is that our other kitchen slide has stopped working, as of a few days ago. We have travel plans that are reserved and paid for, for the next 3 1/2 months, and we do NOT have 6 weeks and the time to travel to Texas to get the repairs done. We paid for a mobile tech to come out, who was AWESOME! He reaffirmed what we thought....that this slide, like the other one that was replaced, was not installed properly. We're in negotiations with GD, trying to get this resolved without having to sit in Texas (we're now 4 states away & not headed there until November) for another 6 weeks, to get this one repaired. Sorry or the novel. I am in the middle of getting ready to post our first video on our own TH-cam channel, and I'm grasping for positive things to say about GD RV's. We love our Grand Design, so I’m sure I can find a lot of good to share, but we are very concerned about how many problems we've already experienced. We expected SOME issues, as these rigs take a lot of wear and tear traveling as much as we do. I think I can probably guess why you wouldn't buy a 2020 model, though. :) I'm going to join the Facebook group to read about other experiences and share mine. Maybe someone can give us some tips on there. I truly appreciate you sharing your experience, so we know that we aren't the only ones. :)

    This is a great story and thanks for sharing! We are also Grand Design owners (bought used 3 years ago), we have an Imagine 2600RB. I have nothing but positive things to say about customer service of Grand Design and have experienced it ourselves earlier this year. We went to an owner's rally in Michigan in May 2021, our first camping adventure of the season. A couple days in we noticed a dripping from the back of our trailer. Contacted the on-site techs at the rally and later that day they replaced a leaking / broken valve on our water heater, free of charge... and we are with NO warranty at all. Don Clark, CEO of Grand Design, also had a campfire talk during the rally that I missed and regret that seeing your video. These people are the real deal and I would buy another Grand Design RV in a heartbeat! I have heard this story over and over. Service after the sale. Glad your rig is fixed and again, thank you for sharing :-)

    Bravo!!! I’m getting closer to making the leap myself! I’ve sold my big bulky furniture, donated lots of things, given sentimental things to family and still sifting through the hoards from the last 12 years in one house. Another year and I’ll be full time at 36 years old, I’ve been dreaming of this for 10 years. I took early retirement from real estate at 32 years of age and then completely stopped working February 8th, 2020 due to the current situation and two years later I realize now it’s time, time to make the moves and get downsizing so I can get out and travel with my three dogs. Grand Design has been 2nd on my list, it might be first now. Thanks for the video!

      Congratulations. But be cautious about buying anything pandemic built. I’ve heard stories about poor quality. Also, Grand Design was bought by Winnebago and some say the quality went down.
      No RV is perfect and no manufacturer is perfect.
      Still, I have heard GD customer service is better than others. And they have this whole “family” thing with Facebook groups and rallies.
      Look into the exact model you want and join the matching group on Facebook. Then you will hear from lots of different owners.

      Make sure you still have “purpose” but taking care of 3 dogs might be enough 😉

      You are right. For years they used lack of knowledge and in Normas effort to deny enough claims to be profitable. Now that I single unhappy customer canUnravel their marketing budget and possibly company, they would do better to keep the old language, but instead of all the wasted resource to deny claims, instead guarantee a payout rate and Have the customers deny their own claims and instead of agents denying claims they would contact the customer and give them a remedy anyway between 25 to 75% then for every claim, polish a summary of denial/acceptance and amount. People would appreciate being able to actually buy insurance with a 70-80% payout Plus some real value addVersus what they get now which is Probably like a 30-60% pay out

    Thanks for sharing. We just bought a 2018 310 GK last fall and have only used it once so far. It is good to know Grand Design stands behind their products. We were previously in a Class A MH but fell in love with all the windows and layout of the 310 so we made the switch.

    Wow! That's terrible. Glad you could get it in and repaired. Denied, that's not right! Glad it worked out. I haven't done any research on after market warranties. I'm too cheap, living on the edge. We have been pretty lucky, although our campers have not been new. I hear a lot of stories about new camper falling apart. Thanks for sharing your story.

      Hey Steve 🐢 We still are on the fence with the warranty. Our RV was a 2017 that we bought used in late 2019. Some of the kinks were worked out but it was barely used.     First time to catch your TH-cam - GREAT EPISODE! We are employed full time and RV part time (as much as possible). Just bought our 2nd camper. Went from a well used pop-up almost a year ago today to a 2020 Jayco White Hawk 24MBH late last fall. Didn’t take us long to realize how much we loved RV-ing! I keep hearing great things about Grand Design. Just hope we are disappointed with our Jayco. So far - Great! May have to really consider Grand Design next time. I’ve subscribed!

    Glad you got your issues resolved. We have been working with Lippert on issues with our jacks. After several attempts with an RV service center that couldn't locate the problem, Lippert sent a factory tech to our home to work on it. (By the way, Lippert has factory techs right out of Tampa, FL) We are very pleased with the company and the results.

    Glad this issue was finally resolved. I know what a headache problems like this can be, especially when someone (warranty company) drops the ball.
    We looked very hard at a GD Solitude in 2018. Beautiful rig but the dealer just didn't want to work with us, and their service reputation was not good. Ended up with a Montana that we love. But that aside....they are all the same. It's the customer service that counts.

    I'm so glad I stumbled across your video. My wife and I have been thinking about getting an RV but we're trying to decide what type; Class A, C or towable. I know, all over the place but we have a lot of variables. The one thing we decided on based on our research, and visits to factories, is that the two best of class options are Tiffin for Class A and Grand Design for towable. I'm so glad to see real life experience with GD and how they stepped up to take care of your issue. In the RV world the bar has been set really high by Bob Tiffin so this video was enlightening to see others like Don Clark share his commitment to the customer. Now if I could only find a decent after market warranty company.....sounds like the jury is still out on Wholesale Warranty. Thumbs up and I've subscribed, lookin forward to more videos.     Had a 2017 Grand Design 2150... Loved it, but traded for a 2020 Thor Chateau class C. We never had any problems with the trailer - just getting too old for the hitching routine! We have a full wall Schwintek slide... so far 🤞. Glad you guys finally got yours fixed! We bought Grand Design also for their reputation!

      I understand why you went to the C, I the hitching routine can wear me out, I have rheumatoid arthritis, some days hitching is no problem, other days it is agony, which is why we only move every two weeks or so. I hope grand design continues to provide strong customer support as the get bigger!

    We also decided on Grand Design to purchase and then picked the model that suited our needs. We do understand the high upkeep on RV units with the continuous movement and shaking while in transport as well as the elements constantly beating the unit up. Keeping up on maintenance, tightening and replacing is normal. It is just nice when a company stand behind their product when thing inevitably go wrong beyond our control.

    I have a 2020 Grand Design 2930 RL and the bearings were over lubed at the factory. When it came to 2021 Preseason tuneup at the dealer in Oak Grove Mo. (Life Style RV). When they went to check the breaks/Pads & bearings they discovered the seals were BLOW OUT, and ALL the grease had ruined the breaks. (Our GD Solitude) was less than a week out of warranty. Short of the long, Grand Design took into consideration (COVID PLAGUE), and Covered the issue with the generosity of Lippert backing their product as well. That $900.00 ticket was fully covered by Both parties. I Love the Grand Design Product! I'll have nothing else but a GRAND DESIGN RV!!

    You are hitting the nail on the head. We chose Grand Design too, just have to figure out which model now. We chose them for exactly the same reasons you did.

      We picked the Solitude 310 GK for the size- 35’- and the windows. You go over 35’ and there are places you can’t fit. We did video tours of our RV, one for inside and one for outside.

    I really enjoyed your video about the Schwintek slide issue. My 2017 Imagine has two Schwintek slides and we are very careful not to overload them with heavy items. We also are meticulous about lubricating the "shoe" on the slides as we learned on the Lippert TH-cam video. The only issue we experienced was self-induced when an object fell between the slide trim and the interior wall, jamming the slide.

    I love your GD story I’m a keystone guy,our hydraulic motor went out on us at the end of vacation ,all slide we’re in but jacks were down,so I couldn’t move our 5wheel within 24 hrs campers inn Myrtle beach had a tech at our site installing a new motor,thanks to keystones customer dept.

    Thanks fo sharing your story. My wife and I retire in 10 months and are going to be 1/2 timers, 6 months at our cottage up in Canada and 6 mouths down south where it warm. We are get a 5th wheel to travel in. Grand Design has been at the top of our short list for a while now as the brand of RV but your story and many many others similar have made our minds up. We are getting a Grand Design!!!! You have helped us feel very confident in making this BIG decision. In fact we are planning on purchasing our new 1/2 time home, a Reflection 150 268BH, this fall and a new 3/4ton truck to pull it. Thanks again and we hope to run into you guys on the road somewhere warm in the winter of 2021. And keep those stories coming!!!!!

But we are a ways from Oakville Ontario and I am assuming you meant Oakville Ontario not Oakville Manitoba. Our cottage is just north of Gimli, Manitoba.     Hello Downsizing Makes Cents (Like the Penny). I hope I am a hero in this one. That is great on Grand Design. I have heard they are real good. Wow good times at Tampa. Alice be honest. You wanted to go to the show to meet Camper Life. Come on now. That is why for the Class A I am so happy with Newmar. They have taken care of us on the few calls we have made. It means a lot. As y'all now know being full time when something goes wrong it really sucks. It is much worse than being in house. Great video.

    Glad to hear it worked out. We have a 2019 Solitude S- Class 3350RL.
    And our story is VERY similar. We were getting ready to drive to Indiana to get the suspension upgraded when our Schwintek bedroom slide quit. We ended up taking it back to GD for that and a couple other issues. Like you GD took care of it very well... We took off the middle of December and are just getting ready to sell the Sticks.

    I also did a lot of research on fifth wheels and it came down to Grand D and Jayco. I happen to go to their website and saw the owners email address. So for giggles I send Mr. Don a long email with my question on why I should choose a Grand D over the Jayco thinking I will never get a response. Well about 4 hours later I received a call in my office and It was Mr. Don calling me while at his sons graduation. He answered all my questions and I felt good about their product but the wife out voted me and we went with the Jayco. The main reason was that Grand D was just starting out and she was concerned about them going out of business and we would be stuck with a camper and no support. Thanks for the video.

    Really enjoyed your story, and while it not a very pleasant experience, it turned out to be a good one non the less... I have a GD 2018 312BHTS. One night, back in June of 2019, I had just arrived at my storage facility to check on my rv. Not having turned on the battery, and with no power connecting the rv, I had witnessed stray electrical sparks streaming down through the basement area and then down through to the underbelly egnighting a fire. The next morning I contacted my insurance company, told them of what had happened, and things were set in motion. Claims adjuster, and inspection. The insurance company wanted to have a fire and arson investigation completed, well after some time had gone by, (2 months), I got a call from the insurance company saying that they had reached out to Grand Design (and they had sent out a rep) to inspect for the cause, and found it to be their fault from a roug fastening screw that had pierced through a wire which caused a self fusing breaker to overheat and cause a fire. Grand Design contacted me and said they would make it right, at no cost to me, and would it be ok with me if the came to pick up my damaged rig in So California, take it back to Middlebury, and build it anew!!
    They did and threw in some 2020 model additions (woo hoo). Plus they covered all of my pre planned camping trips since I didn't have my rv. I am Grand Design for life...

    Just wanted to add about what Larry said about choosing a company who gets good reviews about standing behind their products. And a dealer who still puts the customer first. Previously we had two Aerolite (Thor) products, where when it came to warranty issues, it was like pulling teeth to get anything approved. Granted most of the small stuff that needs to be done when you buy a new RV trailer, I took care of myself, but once the Aerolite division was moved over to the Keystone division's warranty department after Thor bought Keystone out, things became impossible. Had a "slide" issue on our last 2013 Aerolite, where even the dealer said it was a 100% build / design issue. Keystone just kept repeating that "EVERY" unit that comes out of the factory door is 100% designed and built right. I told them a "5 year old" could see the design flaw that caused one side of the slide to sag 1.5". After that I said I will never again buy another Thor product. Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed the 780 nights of use out of the two Aerolite units over 12 years, but I knew we wanted a higher quality RV, but not a $100k Airsteam. Looked at Lance (too small) Arctic Fox ( no floorplan fit our needs) Then someone said ORV (Outdoor RV) is a sister company to Arctic Fox. But only sold in Denver and westward. So during our 17' Yellowstone trip, we stopped in a WY. dealer to look at the 24RKS floorplan. Took my wife 15 minutes to say "this is the one". Didn't buy from that dealer. Ended up buying from a dealer near the OR. factory. Fact they gave me a trade in $900 less than a bought the 2013 Aerolite new for (used it 400 nights including a Alaska trip). 2-1/2 years later....The ORV unit is hand over foot a better quality / stout built trailer in every way. I guess you get what you pay for. The Aerolite's ran about $16-17k, the ORV was $35k. We kicked a lot of tires. Some I refused to go into because they were a Thor / Keystone company. Once on the IRV2 website, the ORV thread they said if your coming from the Midwest (OH.) Thompson RV near the factory is fabulous dealer to deal with. Was so impressed, the IRV2 crowd, made me the wagon master to organizer the first ORV east coast rally. I held it in Cook Forest State Park in NW. PA in 2018. The ORV company does a western rally in OR. each June.

    We have a new 2023 Thor Quantum Kw29 Class C, with 2 slides. Both are Schwintek. We’ve not been on a maiden voyage yet, and already have an issue with one slide. We bought it at La Mesa, and Shane is our service tech rep. We took it in for repair a few days ago. Hoping Shane will get ours working as good as yours. Thanks for sharing your saga.

      If you contact the manufacturer, they MAY admit what common problem it might be.
      Ours was a piece installed upside down.

    I have a Master's degree in Reliability Engineering. These companies that sell "extended warranties" have done all the studies by looking at failure data for the components and will typically only insure parts that are expected to last longer than the term of the warranty. Yes, sometimes extended warranties benefit some folks, but for the vast majority the stats simply indicate that the majority who buy them do NOT benefit from them. That is why I always tell people not to buy extended warranties. Throw in all the ridiculous exclusions and you have your answer. On a different note, my wife and I have been seriously examining the ability to full time it as well. This all depends on getting approval from my work to work remotely. We were considering both Grand Design and Jayco fifth wheels/tow haulers and I've heard about GD's excellent customer service. Your video has really helped. Thanks.

We should have taken the reimbursement but the CEO was a great salesman- ugh. We looked at a lot of manufacturers. It isn't just Grand Designs customer service but their whole attitude. It is like you are in a club. Look at facebook group for the Grand Design you are considering. Also, watch a video about one of their rallies. They have a special hashtag too (gdvr4life).     Also have a similar story with Wholesale Warranties, we have a 2018 Grand Design Solitude 310gk-r. Had some issues come up and took it to our dealer for repairs and Wholesale Warranties also denied our claims, wasn't as fortunate as you on talking with them about the denial of claims so I ended up getting a refund and went with a different extended warranty company. I will not recommend them to anyone. So glad everything worked out for you all. Safe travels!!

    You. We have a new 2021 GD 260 Rd that has slide problems from 3 months after we bought it. GD has fallen short as it is still broken. Techs from GD can not get it fixed. It goes back to the factory next month. I have sent EMails to Don Clark. Lucky you got the response you did.

    I have an extended warranty through Good Sam. Had a claim recently and it was handled seamlessly and quickly. So far I am happy with my Good Sam extended warranty. Glad everything worked out for both of you. My wife and I have a hoe base in Alaska and travel in the ‘Lower 48”during the winter time.

      Good Sam has replaced parts multiple times on our full wall slide, the problem is they refuse to pay shipping and the Schwintek tracks don't ship for free.

    I'm a fierce "no aftermarket warranty" pusher. It's hard to explain to people when they are thinking of purchasing something WHY a warranty company would deny a claim that's in clear writing as covered on their paperwork, but this is exactly how they weasel out. If you are comfortable arguing on the phone you can sometimes have better luck, but if you don't want the trouble they are just not worth it.... So few people actually get the benefit of a covered expensive item, whether that's a car issue, or an RV issue. Best of luck and great story! I value companies that stand behind their product, repairing this and not trying to blame it on "oh well you must have hit something with the slide at some point" really shows they accept responsibility for the mistake at assembly.

      After the fight we had trying to get Wholesale Warranty to pay for a broken leaf spring - something specifically covered- we are definitely not for after market warranties. They refused to pay fir a $15 u bolt. THEY decided it didn’t need to be replaced. All experts say it should. That video was pretty recent. And you are right, they will try to blame you.
