After our second failure on our #SchwintekSlide in our #Granddesignrv Momentum 395 MS we discovered that adding rollers and repairing the rivets was just the fix needed. Here is the link to the Lippert document to read all the specs they call to be in place.

Thank you so much for the video. I have a 2021 Solitude ST390RK. I pulled into Texas a month ago and when I went to set up the right slide in the kitchen wouldn’t go out. After investigating a little, I found that all the rivets on the right side were broke. I just ordered all the rollers to put under all of my slides. Time to re rivet everything. Thanks again.

I has a similar issue with our 376TH although I was happy to discover that there were rollers installed under our front slides. I was about to buy all of the same rebuild kits you invested in but instead detached the frame and inspected it first - bingo, rivet failure. I re-riveted the runners, re-assembled it and everything works beautifully. Cheers mate!

Nice job and nice video. In my limited understanding the blocks and the wheels in the H column can rest a bit on the tracks, but are not supposed to be supporting the weight of the slide. With no bottom rollers I’d guess the threshold/wear bar under the slide wore or compressed… seems like the rollers do more than reduce the friction and load on the motors and spur gears. Would have been so easy and not very expensive for the rollers to have been installed at the factory. Baffling that they were not.

  • @robertburns5145

I would consider adding roller skid plates under the slide to save wear on the slide bottom.

That was the Best video of a Lippert “H” channel I have ever seen. Great repair. My 2011 Jayco 5 th wheel has a “C” channel. Changed both motors from inside. Had to do some southern engineering to remove the motors. Lol. Back in service. Your video should get an Academy award for best repair of an RV. Thanks.

Informative video! I have a wildcat 302bh with a similar slide using the schwintek slide.. I’m having issues with it coming in on one side and I believe it has something to do with the roller on that side. It’s tearing up the coating on the underside of the slide and it doesn’t roll. Upon further inspection, it appears they used a bolt instead of a pin going into the roller and I will be trying to loosen the bolt to see if it helps, or replace it with an oem style pin. If that doesn’t work, I wouldn’t know what else to do except take it apart like you have, and it makes me feel a little bit more confident in doing so because of this video..

I had a GD 2019 solitude, 5 slides, my schwintek slides didn’t have bottom rollers either. Because I had to deal with these massive slides, - I now have a slide less RV, lol.
What is interesting, if Lippert says rollers should be there, I wonder if this requirement of bottom rollers is a recently new add-on improvement, I would be reaching out to Lippert and asking them. Second, GD saying they are not needed is a bit of a 🤬, I would be having a little chat with Lippert to learn more.
Anyway, very impressive repair job Todd! 👍🏼🍻

Sorry to hear about your problem. I am a mobile repair tech and I just finished a Lippert training class about your slide mechanism.
According to the Lippert instructors, ALL slides using a Schwintek slide system are to have a roller at each end of the slide at NO MORE than 6" from the side wall. Then there is to be no more than 24" apart between rollers. If this is not done, it is the manufacturer who is at fault. I think that Grand Design is a responsible manufacturer and would see the fault in this build. You may want to reach out to Lippert for further info on the required build and then maybe even though out of warranty, Grand Design may help. Good luck.

Great video! You illustrate one reason that when we were looking at RV's to purchase, we eliminated all that had slides! What you are experiencing is just an engineering and design failure. This type of slide was not designed to be installed with such weight. Great job on getting it fixed!

Omg. Cheers to you for getting it fixed. It's complete bull that you don't have rollers on that slide... We have a 397th and now I want to confirm that we have rollers. We do have rollers on the inside end of the slide. They leave wonderful dents in our flooring. I was told our bed is too heavy. I asked GD service and the factory tour folks about max weight of mattress so i can be within parameters... nobody knew the answer... I just have a hard time believing people these days. I'm so glad you were able to get it fixed. Safe travels.

Thanks for this. Just bought our first trailer with a Schwintek slide. I’m a bit nervous because we have always had Lippert through frame slides in the past. Would it be advisable to add these rollers proactively ? If so, does this mean I would need to jack up the slide to insert them. TIA

Excellent video...we've got a 2023 Reflection 320MKS, and I'm forever worrying about the slides! One question, though...instead of rivets (I can't believe they use rivets for that weight, let alone aluminum ones!), I wonder if some type of nut & bolt would work?

Great video, these are problematic slide units. On our Motorhome, I had the rivets shear on one side top and bottom and our slide even had rollers under it. By bending up a small tool the width of the gob lock, I was actually able to re-rivet the gob blocks back in with out removing the h channel and was pretty easy to do. The tool slipped behind the block and I could set the block in place and hold outward tight to rivet it. Also there is a video of you search, that shows a manual control box to move the slide when doing maintenance. I did find a manual that stayed that the rivets were originally plastic and are meant to be a sacrificial part to save from damaging other parts.

GD actually added sliders instead of rollers on some models, but only on the ends and not in the middle which is just as wrong as well based on what I have seen from lippert. Great video and explanation, Todd. I'm surprised that Grand Design hasn't stepped up and assumed responsibility for this. I know people hate on the Schwintek slide design, but this isn't their fault. The mechanism is not designed to carry all that weight. That's what the rollers are for.

Great job Todd. You even had an audience in the background. lol Could you thread the blocks and put a hardened specialty headed screw with red loctite ? Perhaps duplicate the blocks in a hardened steel ? Then the question of what else will break if the rivets don't. The bottom rollers should be standard equipment. Loved watching how you tackled this, but I keep wondering why you keep having this?
We have a solitude 377 and we have never had a problem and we also have no rollers. Looking at the failer mode I wonder about how loaded your slide is? Is it a closet slide or a bed slide? I have read for years that schwintek slides are not meant for heavy loads. So I was wondering what your slide is carrying in and out?
Ours is a bed slide and we found out quickly the floor in the bed slide is 1/8” plywood that is stapled to the bottom of the bed. So there is no putting much weight under the bed.

Makes me glad I have our 2022 Riverstone Legacy 42 fskg. We have only had two minor problems a turn signal brake light not working and one of our leveler jacks had a small leak . All you TH-camrs with your Grand Design’s every week repairing something. 1 Strange Adventure released a video yesterday about their main slide breaking the bracket. Another TH-camr Paving New Paths slide broke.

Tony, pretty sure your slide mechanisms are made by the same manufacturer Lippert, as GD. You should check your slides for those bottom rollers too. 🍻

@@SpykersB Yes they are but the support underneath them is different than the ones that are on the Grand Design’s. I looked and they were more robust.

Did you add inside rollers as well? We have a 2017 Forester 3051 with a full side slide (about 18'). We had a sudden popping noise when extending the slide out. In the shop she went and discovered the inside roller (there are 5 rollers outside like the ones you installed and 5 rollers inside that support such a large slide) just behind the drivers seat had worked a hole through the floor so the slide fell into the hole when closed. We really don't want to remove the slide and repair the floor for obvious cost reasons (disassembly and reassembly of half our coach. Your diagrams have helped and are actually the only ones I've found showing rollers on the outside. Have you found anything regarding inside rollers? Of course the issue is getting to them. Thoughts, ideas?

FYI… there is a manufacturing company in or near Tucson, AZ that have made there own version of a ‘swin-tec’ that is supposedly superior to that one. Some RV Tuber had one of their slides replaced with it and did a video about it, but I can’t recall who. 🤔 Maybe something to consider for a permanent solution? ( found it… All About RV’s did the video about a year ago. They’re called VROOM)

You need through bolts and bracing.

Thought of that but there isn't any space the way the design the system. IF they would of added rollers from the beginning it would have really prevented a lot of problems.

Definitely seems like a Grand Design cost cutting step(no rollers), if the slide manufacturer recommends the rollers for that size slide. That is not to say the whole RV industry doesn’t do the same on their systems too. Thanks for sharing all of the details of the process you went through.

Todd, your technical videos are always great, so instructive and clear. So sorry you are having this repeat problem. I guess the warranty on the first warranty repair is expired. I admire your persistence and capability!

What holds the rollers on an there in shear or do they set on the shelf. Do the screws go in to the frame.

Great job on the repair. We are on the second schwintek system. solitude s-class 2930 RLR same issue...no rollers under the upper slide. GD basic told us to pound sand. And lippert provided the specs for the install of rollers under the slides. It appears that this was a manufacturing defect. And someone didn't read the lippert specs.

How did you put the weatherstripping back on the bottom where you put the rollers??

    • @SwitchItUpLife
      @SwitchItUpLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

We simply cut out small areas where weather stripping sits and reinstalled exactly the way it was.

@@SwitchItUpLife Thanks. Great video BTW. We have the same issue and I've been researching a fix. Can't believe RV manufacturers went against the specs and opted NOT to use rollers. Sounds like a future class action to me.

MaN, I am really impressed with you guys attempting this project and succeeding. We don't have any schwintek slides to deal with on our pop up, but I have been curious as to how they work and the build. You showed me a lot of things I didn't know about. These slides intimidate alot of people, but I think I would give them a go. Surprised they didn't put on rollers...hmm

We're currently looking for a newer, larger Class A. Based on all the tech and owner reviews, we've actively skipped any rig with Schwintek slide mechanisms.

The rollers on our 397th are on the inside under bed. Can not see them from the outside. However the wood they are on is only held with 3 screws which have broke this week and I replaced with leg bolts

Todd, you guys really did a great job repairing the slideout. I just wish Lippert and/or Grand Design would design a better slide system and stop using the same system, year after year, knowing that these fail, left and right.. I have heard about another company that makes replacement slideout systems but can not remember the name of the company. We have the 22' Momentum 395ms-r, which you saw in person in Spring, TX (Rayford Crossing RV Resort), when Lisa and I first met you and Shelia. Remember, "hey Shelia, can Todd come out and play". lol
