- -Left vs. Right Sided Heart Failure-
🫁LEFT side think LUNGS
You’ll see more pulmonary symptoms in patients with left-sided HF
These include dyspnea, crackles, labored breathing, moist cough, and orthopnea
🧍RIGHT side think REST of the body
Fluid is backing up into the venous system
This will cause swelling of the extremities and pitting edema, weight gain, jugular venous distention (JVD), increased girth, and may cause weeping of the legs in those with severe pitting edema (fluid is exiting through the skin)
What is the KEY lab result we’d see as ELEVATED depending on the severity of heart failure? Do you know? Comment below!

A message from Kristine, founder of NurseInTheMaking📣
My name is Kristine and I survived nursing school…and you can too!
Nurse In The Making was inspired during my time in nursing school. I immediately struggled and decided to create my own study guides. These guides have helped me personally as well as many others make nursing school just a little more manageable.I hope you find comfort knowing that everyone struggles at times. Nursing school is emotionally and physically draining. I hope these informative, clean, and simple guides help you navigate through all the information because there is A LOT of it in nursing school.
Happy Studying Future Nurses. Don't forget to enjoy the journey!
Also, right sided heart failure is almost always caused by left sided heart failure.
Very helpful.
Jazakillah mam
Cor pulmonale usually results from left side failure!
But right sided willl be your liver patients (drinkers look for jaundice and ascites) check renal function as increased pressure will decrease ability for kidneys to work at maximum function of either side of heart. (Kidneys are the first organ to fail, always)
You may confuse students with that explanation since left sided heart failure affects "the rest of the body" in the same manner as right sided heart failure.
Hi there! Thank you for your feedback! The memory trick for the left side being related to "lungs" is due to the pulmonary symptoms that are often primary symptoms (trouble breathing, shortness of breath, cough, etc) while the right side or "rest of the body" deals with head to toe primary symptoms often seen (swelling of hands & legs, weight gain & edema, ascites, JVD, etc). There will most likely be secondary symptoms that will affect more of the body in both right & left-sided heart failure, but this video is intended to review the primary symptoms.
I hope this helps clear up that information! Best of luck to you! 🙂
❤ Love it
Thank you 🤗
Pllzz make vedio about congestive heart failure
I am always looking for ideas for videos and content to share information on. I will keep this in mind 🙂
Can you have both happening at the same time?
That's a great question! Yes, a person can experience both left and right heart failure at the same time - this is called biventricular heart failure. Each of the symptoms can be provided in a mixed presentation.
Can you list the resources specifically shown in this video. I want to purchase.
Here you go! :)

Can you tell me How do you tell if these patients are dehydrated? 😊
I’ve been an RN for 15 years! Sooo a lot of RNs don’t really know how to tell if the patient is dehydrated
What if you have both
Thankyou ma'am
