How To Replace The Wiper Linkage Bushings In Your 1972-1993 Dodge Pickup Truck

  • It seems like every tin grille Dodge I've owned needed this repair at one point or another. The goofy plastic wiper bushings are a frequent source of annoyance on these classic Dodges, so today I show you how to replace them. The subject truck is a 1978 Plymouth Trail Duster, but this same information applies to the Dodge Ramcharger, as well as trucks like the D100 / D150 , D200 / D250 , D300 / D350, W100, W200, W300, and the first gen Cummins powered trucks. The bushings themselves are also exactly the same as found on many classic Mopar cars starting in the 70s, including the Dodge Dart, Plymouth Duster, and many more.

I just fought this battle last week. I found it much easier to take everything out and assemble on the bench. That way you're just dealing with 6 bolts and 1 nut.

Agreed, much easier taking the arm off the motor and assembling everything outside the cowl. Just did this recently also. I also did a bushing backwards 😅

I just did this to my '74 D100. I found that it is best to install the driver's side pivot to the linkages, and slide it thru the cowl openings as you did. However, it worked good to also install the other pivot before sliding the assembly all the way back in. Then I was able to pop both pivot arm's through their respective openings and get the 3 bolts started on each. Then, popping the last rod/bushing onto the wiper motor. LIke you said, be easy on the grease as the suction force is extreme, and too much grease is hard to push back out the sides of the bushing.
Before putting the cowl cover back on, I thought I would make sure it was working properly.......tuned the wiper switch on, and the motor turned about 1/4 turn and then suddenly stopped. For some reason the center pivot arm went upwards and the long connecting rod rammed into the inner cowl. WTF? So, I guess this pivot arm was tilted sligthly upward, and when the motor started turning, it went "up" instead of "down". So I have to take it all apart and rotate that pivot arm to the down position and see if that solves the problem.
Ever have that happen? A real pisser for sure.

As Usual, Very Helpful video. I found the most frustrating part was just prying off the wiper arms. You gotta first lay down a scrap piece of leather or cardboard to protect that 50 yr old paint.....then a piece of scrap wood about 1/4" thick, then the small pry bar......and the trick seemed to be to pry from down near the lower hole area of the cowl. (Be sure to pull outward those little "L" shaped saftey pins once the arm moves outward a bit). Also sprayed PB Blaster up inside. But this truck '73 D100 was not outdoors much, and still was a royal pain. Had to lay down some padding/towells and climb up on the hood.......at least I had water to drink from the two bird baths. Its helpful to plug in your vintage Romper Room record player and throw on the old 45 that plays "Pop Goes The Weasel".......helps set the mood for when those wiper arms go popping off and go air-borne, almost breaking the sound barrier........."The monkey thought it was all for fun......POP goes tha Weasel!" I guess we are the monkeys.

Both my 1989 Dodge Dakota and my 1979 Dodge St. Regis use those bushings. The truck is easier, but the St. Regis was a bit of a nightmare. The worst part is I've replaced those Dorman bushings multiple times. My solution was to use pin clips and greased washers. Haven't had a problem since. Now the crappy wiper pivots on the Dakota is another story....

Either your motor isn’t getting park power from the wiper switch, or wiper motor is bad. There are various circuit tests that could be done to get to the bottom of that. Weird problems can be caused by a lack of ground to the wiper switch, but that’s usually an E body problem - and I don’t think that’s a normal symptom.
