I forgot this song existed for well over a decade, remembered it today for some reason and put it on in the car, just about brought a tear to my eye. I'd forgotten how beautiful and haunting it is, and now that I'm an adult I can understand the meaning and how deeply he feels about the everglades.

I met John Anderson at a casino in Pocola, Oklahoma. After the show me and my wife were walking to our car and John was sitting by his trailer. I asked if we could take a picture together he said yes. We started talking and 30 minutes later we shook hands and hugged each other. He made me feel like we knew each other for years. John Anderson is one of the most considerate and down home person I have ever met!

The really funny thing is that I feel the same way. My husband and I are die-hard rock fans (to a point, it depends on who they are), and we discovered a new country station in Minnesota that plays country like this. They also play folk and stuff, but this song made us want to pay attention; we listen to this station as much as we can now. I'm sick of the same old crap they play on these rock stations sometimes, what a great refreshing change.

Native Floridian here. 7th generation. Love this state. This song brings my heart so much joy from childhood to today. So much nostalgia for the Florida I grew up in and not for what was built up to be.
Palmetto bushes, cypress trees, dirt roads, and swamps just do something for my soul.
I also firmly believe this should be the official Florida state song.

However, my papaws farm and his parents farm that was next to it was taken for a dam, in the name of tourism and money, so this speaks to me. If we had been left alone, we would have over 400 acres of land. Yet the government took it. Oh, they paid my mamaw.. bottom dollar. 🤬

Absolutely haunting and a rallying cry to save a national and ecological treasure. This song stung when I first heard it almost 30 years ago and the state of the Everglades has only gotten worse since. There are some songs that just rise up, strike you and never leave....."The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", "Shuttin Detroit Down" and "Seminole Wind" are three examples as they describe heartfelt loss. Hopefully more people will hear Osceola cry before it is too late.....

Better. This is the single greatest version of this song. And if you listen close. The piano notes are slightly different, the fiddle is drastically different at open and close from the album version. And my beloved whom i miss was a fiddle player. She was certain the fiddling for this live show was improvised and adapted from the album version.

It was one of the proudest moments of my life and career! My father watched my work, the crew were amazing, Mr. Anderson gave a teenager the chance of a lifetime and all of the other singers showed nothing but respect when some Seminole Tribe members were recognized and dedicated to!!!

it's more about what John Anderson wrote this song about which is entitled about in the song from start to finish. it's about every member of his band that shares his passion for his existence on this planet we call earth. it doesn't have anything to do with any of the musicians , it's about all the musicians doing their own thing all at once end creating one of the most prolific and creative songs in this bands prime. every musician giving in 1000% of every bit of their talent together and yes i will agree that this violin is one of the best, creative artists like this can go anywhere and instill his brand of talent to any band be it country, rock n roll or country. there's no room for his talent in the rap scene because rap isn't about making music, it's about turning our kids against society and starting a movement that supports drugs guns and murder.

John Anderson was growing up in Apopka, FL when I was visiting relatives in nearby Orange City. In August 1962 at the age of 18 I decided to visit FL for the first time. I recall the roundtrip Greyhound ticket costing $78 and I remember seeing palm trees for the first time as the scenic cruiser traveled thru southern GA. FL was beautiful and I extended my visit to 3 months. To pay for the extended stay I got my first job delivering telegrams on my bike at the DeLand Western Union. Joe Spivey’s fiddle makes this great song even better. To me this was among the very few really good songs in the 1990s. Long live John and his band!

  • @johnbarilovits3721

John Anderson wrote this song as a Florida native. His heart, like mine, must have broken from seeing all the destruction of the natural Florida. The phosphate mining was ugly, but when the land was mined and restored by the mining companies, the alligators, gar fish, snapping turtles, osprey, bald eagles and great blueherons moved right back in as the land re-naturalized. I grew up in central Florida in Polk County in the late 1960s when they started draining the Green Swamp and other areas. The land that is now Disney World and all the other "theme parks" was all drained by a huge system of canals. All the development around Orlando started with Disney, I remember as a young boy seeing the wild butterfly orchids growing on the cypress trees as my brothers and I pushed a jon boat through the swamp on our land. I would later see slabs cut off cypress trees with the orchid plants being sold to tourists. I remember it angering me so, even as a child, because I knew it meant the tree was killed where it stood. Even today, areas of young cypress trees are being cut down and shredded for cypress mulch and sold at Home Depot. The land under Disney World and all the other development is lost forever.

I was reminded of this song today having a conversation about Florida, immediately, my heart went to this song although my mind wasn't in the same place at that time.
