  • Calculate your compression ratio... Part #16 Chevy 454 Big Block Performance Build..
About to install the AFR 265 Heads on this Big Block Chevy 454 build and wanted to verify the engine's compression ratio before going forward on this project... Watch and enjoy as we go thru
the steps involved in calculating compression ratio on this build.... 😀
    00:00 Start....
    00:24 Tools used...
01:00 Prepping the head for measuring...
01:38 Measuring combustion chamber using a syringe...
03:57 Measuring combustion chamber using TEKK graduated cylinder...
    07:35 Head gasket cc...
    08:08 Deck height cc...
    08:41 Valve relief cc...
    10:10 Piston dome cc...
11:36 Going thru the compression calculation math...

I was using a horsepower calculator that is available on the internet to check out what the horsepower output of this motor is likely to be and its telling me 601 HP @ 6315 RPM. The same website also calculates static and dynamic compression ratios which are needed to predict the horsepower. When I input the numbers from your video they did calculate static compression as 10.16:1 and dynamic compression of 8.14:1. The only spec the web page required that I did not see in your videos was the Intake Valve Close (IVC)@.050. I could not find this at Comp Cams website either. I used 50 degrees since Comp Cams does say the IVC is 66 degrees @ .015. It will be exciting to see if the motor meets or exceeds the calculated output. I'm going to guess that it will if you use good gas and can advance the timing to 36 degrees total advance at WOT. I guess you are going to have to find a good car to put that motor into? Hope you are having fun doing this project and making these videos for us. I know I'm enjoying watching them.

Thanks Mike.... a lot of good information there and thanks for running it thru that Dyno software... It would be nice if the engine would hit those those numbers...
went online and found an IVC calculator and put my numbers in and it said IVC @.050 was 47 degrees.
Thanks again for all your input....

I’m doing a 454 build with a similar compression ratio what octane gas are you planning on using? Great video btw
