- Piston to Valve Clearance Check... Having fun with this Performance 454 BBC engine build...
This is something I did earlier in the engine build, but didn't film it. This is a process that needs to be done before the engine is balanced. We've had a couple questions, so let's go back to review the steps that I go thru to check the piston to valve clearance. Hope it's informative....
Nice heads you got there! Thanks for the great video.
Thanks AFR - Air Flow Research for the nice comment on the video... I think with the high quality products that
come from your company you have earned a great reputation among us hot rodders.... Thank you!!!
Your videos are great 👍 I'm getting ready to assemble a 496 BBC and I love how you take your time to explain things and show little tricks I'm trying to learn as much as I can thank you.
Thanks Justin.... Positive comments like yours are always appreciated and good luck with your build...
I’m halfway through my 496 build… referred his videos several times lol
Thank you for your knowledge and video's USA 🇺🇸
Thanks for watching!
Love the clay PAC MAN, very clever!
Thanks Mike... Not sure what a valve eating monster looks like... But that's what popped out...Lol
When I did my 406 I got a hair over .080 on the intake. The exhaust had a ton of room. That's not a whole lot of room but it's never had any issues.
Thanks for the feedback.... good to know....
Awesome man!! LOL 9:33
Pretty good with my valve eating clay monster .... 😀
What was your Quench also retainer to valve Guide clearance great video Thanks
Thanks for the nice comment... Head gasket thickness + .005 would be Quench... Retainer to valve guide clearance was very good on the heads... Don't recall the number...
If by chance you did have a clearance issue, would you have to return those pistons? I am in the stage right now where I need to choose pistons and want a healthy amount of compression.
Hi Designs in orbit.... If I did not have enough space we would have the valve reliefs on the pistons fly cut for more space....
I was looking at the pistons and see a number laser etched into the top, 8395L. Do you recall how many cc the piston dome is? Maybe its about 26 CC? I have some old TRW forged pistons and I want to make sure the dome they have is smaller than yours. If or when I change my cam this will give me an idea about the clearance I should expect to see. Thanks
Hi Mike... 21cc
Do you recall what the lift on your cam was?
It think it was around .625 on the intake and .650 exhaust...
What was total lift of the cam. Seems like alot of room for a solid roller (most starting close to .700 lift)
Hi Enhanced... It's around .650 lift with a 1.7 rocker
I have a Honda k20 engine. I have 1mm oversized dished valves on the intake and I have stock size flat faced valves on exhaust side. Is this a good set up?
Sorry I have never worked on a K20 Honda engine... Look up (PFI speed) on youtube... They maybe could help on your set up.... Thanks...
What size chamber on your heads. You've got plenty of room, maybe take a little off
Hi Terry.... Chamber are 112cc and compression is 10.15 to 1. Going to drive it on the street and want to keep it pump gas friendly...
@@Myersmetalworks very nice. I just got to the party late. 454, overbore.? Looks like a fairly nice dome. Also you said solid roller, nice choice. I'm gonna go back and check the previous videos. Should be a real nice piece for the street. From off the grid in Az.
Hi Terry.... Its a .030 over bore... Piston dome is around 21cc... Its cool your off the grid in Az... nice!
@@Myersmetalworks good morning. So that would be 468 ci.
I think 460....
Which pistons are thoss
Wiseco part# PTS514A3
Would you mind building me a BBC for my 454 SS ?
Hi Miguel... I just work on my own projects right now but I do thank you for asking....
What happens if it’s too close? Just get a shorter pushrod?
There are several things you could do... But I think I would have deeper valve reliefs machined into the pistons
before I had the engine balanced...
Fly cut valve pockets don't buy new pistons
Yeah and crap compression with that much clearance.
