    4 Le Mans victories in a row, including two in a row with the SAME CAR. In its day the GT40 was the most unstoppable car on the planet, and forced everyone else to step up their game by an order of magnitude.

      +Rexor Odin No, this guys doesn't know how to drive. Such fishtailing at 11 seconds is unacceptable. The driver is clearly still learning car control. In my opinion, he really should not take such a rare car to a road course if he still has such control difficulties. It's one thing to push a bit too hard, it's entirely different when you are struggling to keep it pointing in a safe direction.

    Great video, nicely shot and with good sound. Captures the thunder of the GT40 perfectly. I appreciate it takes talent to showboat in a mid engined car, but he's overdriving it like an angry teenager. A power slide exiting a corner looks good. Locking up your brakes and fish tailing definitely does not. If he had kept it tidy he might have stayed ahead of the 911.

    • @MetalGuru965
      @MetalGuru965 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +blueboywhitie English design was a handicap. Shelby totally reworked the Mk II for more reliability, stouter chassis construction to handle the FE block's power and lighter components. The Mk IV was designed and built in the U.S.

      Correct MetalGuru, or Holman-Moody did

    • @MetalGuru965
      @MetalGuru965 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +64fairlane359 The Mk IV was built in Dearborn at a Ford subsidiary called Kar Kraft (as well as the very first Mk II's run at Le Mans in 1965). Holman & Moody were responsible for engine development and Shelby American were responsible for integration/development/testing. In addition, Shelby built all Mk II chassis' for the '66 season. McLaren built the X-1 roadster. After the failure of Ford England, Dearborn got a lot of entities involved, choosing those who could deliver a winner.

      @reeve2222 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Jackson Mangrum Not insulting the GT40 in the slightest, they're the reason why I bleed Ford blue, but there are a couple errors in your comment. Ford first came to Le Mans with the GT40 in 1964, running the original GT40 and again in 1965 with a crude, early version of the Mk 2. In both years, Ford failed to get a car across the line. When Ford won in 1966, on their third try, it was with eight cars that were actually entered by three separate teams, 3 by Shelby-American, 3 by Holman & Moody, and 2 by Alan Mann Racing. The 1966 1-2-3 Le Mans victory came on the heels of another 1-2-3 finish at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and a 1-2 at the 12 Hours of Sebring. The Fords led nearly the entire race against the 7 Ferraris entered, 2 of which were factory backed P3's. When Ford came back to Le Mans in 1967, it was with the third iteration of the car, the Mk 4. This remains to this day, the only "All-American" effort to win Le Mans, with a fully American designed and built car, American team, American drivers, and a American Engine, this time beating factory Ferrari's P4's and NART Ferrari 412 P's. Then the regulations changed and the massive 427 ci Ford FE engine was banned from competition along with other large displacement engines, and Ford pulled out of sportscar racing entirely. There was a loophole though, while prototypes could only run 3 liter engines, cars homologated as "sportscars" could run up to a 5 liter engine. Well, it just so happened that the GT40 had been homologated with the road going Mk 3, and the early GT40s ran the small block Ford 289, which could be comfortably stroked to 302 ci, right around the 5 liter mark. The aerodynamics of the car were tweaked, and it was re-designated the Mk 1. Ford never entered these later Mk 1's in competition, choosing instead to sell the cars to private racing teams. A good number of teams ran GT40 Mk 1's in 1968, and it was the the Mk 1 GT40 entered by John Wyer Automotive that took first, with a Porsche 907L and Porsche 908 hot on its tail, taking 2nd and 3rd. By 1969, the GT40 was showing it's age, sharing the grid with more advanced and faster cars like the ludicrous Porsche 917. Unfortunately for Porsche, every 917 suffered mechanical failure or crashed, one such crash tragically killing driver and team owner John Woolfe on the first lap. The race came down to two cars, the same John Wyer Automotive GT40 Mk 1 that had won the previous year and a factory Porsche 908. The two cars fought back and forth, trading position at pit stops coming down to the last hour, the Porsche's brakes were suffering and the Ford's exhaust had gone. On the last lap, the 908 grabbed the lead on the start of the Mulsanne, and at the end of the long straight, the GT40, piloted by Jack Ickx, snatched it back. In the end, the Ford crossed the line a mere 50 yards ahead of the Porsche, making Ford GT40 Mk 1, chassis #1075, one of only 4 cars in history to take the flag at Le Mans twice in a row, and with that, the GT40s gracefully bowed out of competition, having done their job and done it well. So really, the story of the GT40 is one of a constantly evolving platform with multiple engines, engineers on both sides of the Atlantic, championed by multiple factory and privateer teams over the years, and it left what is arguably the greatest legacy in the history of motorsport, bringing an end to Ferrari's undefeated streak in the 1960s and making Stuttgart fight like hell to earn Porsche's domination of the 1970s.

    Having no ABS the brakes should have been calibrated right, shouldn't they? - On several shots only the front left wheel blocks. Hmmm...
    BUT: This is a hillarious car having fantastic sound. So this is a fantastic video... :)

      @Robert Mamarella - Carroll Shelby's involvement in the Viper creation was very minimal. Now, sadly, he's gone and so is the Viper!

    There is a reason the MKIV car had more wheelbase and aerodynamics but the MK II was a winner for sure. The II is more industrial looking then the MK I but also more successful.

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The MKIV was the lightest and fastest and was entirely American made. It was the fitting vehicle to crown Ford's success at Le Mans.

    Someone is going to get hurt.These cars were driven in the 60’s by the best of the best. The Mk11 was a very light car with a 427 Ford Engine, huge torque & by today’s standards small brakes, suspension that’s hardly state of the art. Sure have fun but this beast will get you into trouble in a hurry. Who drove these cars in the 66 and 67. People like Bruce McLaren, Dennis Hulpe, Lioyd Ruby,Frank Gardner. A rare interview by Gardner talks about hitting sand on the road at the end of Muslanne Straight. The guy in this car scares me . Sorry!

    • @375GTB
      @375GTB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At 3500 lbs the Mk.II was not light...
      NEEDED the 427s massive TORQUE of some 550 ft. lbs
      The 330P3 and 330P4 weighed in at 2300 lbs
      450HP and 400 ft.lbs. torque
