It should win the Oscar for best film, best cinematography and a tribute.should be made, on stage, for Ken Miles and his contribution to get Ford to the finish line! Without him who knows where Ford would be now. Christian Bale and Matt Damon were superb and didn't even get nominated. They breathed life into a sad but true story that should be recognized as one of the greatest life stories ever told. Ken Miles is the true Triple Crown winner in my heart and always will be. For which country? It was built in Slough in England, and based on a British Lola design, and was driven by an Englishman and a Kiwi. BUT It did have an American engine, and Shelby's team were obviously from the states. In my view the GT40 is a a collaborative British and American effort, at least up until '66. After that they kind of went their own ways (John Wyer running the Mirage M1 and MkI GT40's while the US team ran the MkIV)

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      TheRealJuralumin - Well.....here we go again in trying to claim which country is responsible for the FORD GT. Let's start with the actual idea of building the car. That clearly was Henry Ford's and Lee Iacocca's. Obviously, there would have never been a Ford GT without those 2 men. Since Ford Motor Co. had zero experience in prototype endurance racing, it made sense to team up with some Brits who did, in hopes of completing a successful machine, as quickly as feasible. The Lola MK VI was used as an inspiration and work quickly began at the Lola Cars "garage." Eric Broadley couldn't handle the corporate ways of Ford and went back to Lola, while John Wyer stayed involved, and the operations were moved to a larger, more complete facility at Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough. After 2 years, many Ford dollars spent and nothing to show for it but failure, Henry Ford removed Wyer from the project, putting Shelby American, Inc. in charge. Shelby American and their very talented crew made numerous changes and modifications to the car which finally made it a winner. So yes, it was a collaborative effort, but the fact remains that it was Ford's idea, and the inclusion of the Shelby American crew as well as that of Holman-Moody, that ultimately made it work! The end.

      m5503 Datpete . Just got back from the Movie , when the race started we Laughed and said Taurus . Our Winter car is a 2005 Taurus that has Door Problems when it is really cold . When I warmed it up for our Storm this week I entered thru the passenger Door to not piss off the Driver Door . Its old and the Door is thin and every thing freezes up inside , Latch ,Lock and Window . I had a G.I web Belt and ammo sling strapped from my leg to the Passenger Door to keep it closed . I'm really happy to see Ken Miles get more widespread recognition with the release of the Ford v Ferrari film. It's a story that deserves to be told. Unfortunately, a lot of the nuance is being lost in the simplified version of the story.
    The team orders to slow down and organize a team photo came hours before the end of the race. It wasn't as simple as Miles slowing down for the others right at the end. The performance and strategy of all cars was affected by the move. It is impossible to know which car (#1 or #2) would have come out on top without a true all out race to the finish. You'll notice that in interviews with McLaren and Amon, that they don't feel like frauds or trophy thieves. They were just as much in contention and the true pace and race were interrupted long before the final lap.

I love the scene from the movie when Ken Miles throws a wrench at his car, and Shelby asks for the wrench to be framed. What honour, what respect! Also, when Matt finally gives back the wrench to his son, I couldn't stop myself from crying. Amazing guys, amazing movie!

It’s not a History Channel exclusive, it was two big star Hollywood actors, telling a story in a timely manner. They did it quite well too, if you’re a REAL fan of the actual story, you’ll like just about everything regarding the topic, not just the black and white text book films.

    It’s great what this film has done, for years only petrol-heads and motorsports enthusiasts knew of the obsession Ford had with toppling Ferrari and the price paid in lives and dollars. This was not just about the common vehicle manufacturers triumph over a legendary sports car racing specialist, but ironically about the same industrial giants ignorance and manipulation of the tireless effort of a handful of talented engineers and drivers who made that inaugural US victory possible. Ken Miles especially, was killed in 1967 testing a prototype of the car that eventually became the All American Le Mans victor that year, complete with 1st champagne celebration. The Legacy of Fords triumphs in motorsport would look very different without contribution from Ken Miles as well as Caroll Shelby.

  • @stevefowler2112

    Actually the story I have heard is that Ken was a true professional and when he was told to slow down to do a three way tie for first that Ford had worked out with the officials he did as he was told and it wasn't until after the race that Le Mans marshals decided the winner would be the GT40 that started the furthest back on the grid having traveled the longest distance and thus would be deemed the winner that they would not let a three way tie enter the record books. Regardless, yes Ken won that race and got robbed but here we are talking about it 44 years later so maybe it ended up working out for Ken after all.

    Sorry, I have to disagree with the comment that this is the most famous, historic Ford GT40 in existence. That has got to be the Gulf GT 40 chassis #1075. In fact, I would say that #1075 is arguably the most valuable car on the planet . Show me another car with the following racing pedigree.
    #1075 won Le Mans twice, 1968 and 1969, it also won the Sebring 12 Hour race in 1969, the BOAC 6 hour race in 1968, Spa 1000km in race in 1968 and the Watkins Glen 6 hour race in 1968. 3rd at the Nurburgring 1000 km in 1969 and pole position at the Daytona 24 h race in 1968
    This is to the Americans ( No slur intended guys so don't rip me a new one) an irrelevance because it was a bunch of Poms that achieved these results with this remarkable car along with Gulf sponsorship after Carroll Shelby pronounced the GT 40 as obsolete in 1967.
    This car resides in Arizona now and is very carefully cherished by it's current owner. It is unrestored and in the same specification it was after the 1969 Le Mans 24 h race victory

I think that is a shame and one should be created for him. What a guy and he definatelty won that day at the 24 hour. People also forget that there would be no GT40 without British Engineering. The first two prototypes built by Lola Cars in Slough Bershire UK were based on the MK6 Lola with a bigger engine and wider body shell to handle bigger rear tyres and the change of engine. Just the type of project Ken loved to get involved with. Eric Broadley who ran Lola cars was hired by Ford to help create the GT40 from his Lola MK6

    0.43: "Triple Crown" of racing is Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours although there MAY be a view re sports car races, the acknowledged and often referred to Triple Crown is this.
    2.01: Group C cars were regular running around the 250mph mark or slightly over so no, the Ford GT speed does not "stand today" as the fastest - bloody impressive for its era though!
    2.49: Shift wasn't on the right side "because of the Americans" - all single seat/open wheel race cars have it there, almost all sports cars do - simply standard practice in the racing industry.

      Ad 1 - Monaco, Indy and Le Mans is Triple Crown of Motorsport, but Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans is Triple Crown of Endurance Races.

    • @scottfritz4988

      They meant the triple crown for races the GT40 could run in. It could not run at Indy or Monaco.

    • @tonmanify
      @tonmanify 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, accurately called the Triple Crown of Endurance - different to the Triple Crown of racing. There are a few "triple crowns" for different racing disciplines, so it CAN be a little crowded!

    • @dukecraig2402
      @dukecraig2402 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Doesn't matter what some offical pulled after the race at Le Mans, Miles won the triple crown that year, we all know it.
      Especially when you consider that the officials told Ford right before the end of the race that if Miles crossed first he'd be the winner, right after the finish they reneged on that and said he was second, so it's the Le Mans officials who are the bad guys out of that deal.

      And Miles was ahead because McLaren/Amon slowed down on team orders and Miles/Hulme didn't. And Gurney led all but one lap of Sebring and Miles only won because Gurney broke down on the last lap.

    Yeh a few innacuracies in there. The mk4 recored 212 mph on the mulsanne not 236. Also the cars were made right hand drive, not because it was fammiliarto americans, but because most circuits in Europe were clockwise. RHD allows the driver to place the car in the apex better.
    Lovely to see the car though, id argue chassis p1075 , the gulf coloured car was the most famous chassis winning in both 68/69.
