Great video, Tyler! I recently upgraded to the R5 (from an M6...yeah). Needless to say I LOVE it. And you're right, for shooting youtube videos and short form stuff, overheating is a non-issue. The colors it produces right out of the camera are magnificent.

Yeah I think the overheating has been improved enough that the R6 is a very viable hybrid camera. There are better choices for primarily video, but I still want an R6
Only thing keeping me from buying one of the lower spec R cameras. Missing good value lenses. Will stick to my 5 y/o APS-C for a bit longer for that reason. Still getting good photos out of it..
I do a lot of wildlife photography so I will probably go with R5 or R6 just for the better AF. But I am still on the fence going to mirrorless because I have so much glass invested in DSLR cameras. I know there is a mount to attach them but for some reason that makes me hesitant.
I’ve owned the RP and R and now the R5 and I have to say, the size of the RP makes it my favorite. If it had two card slots and a little more megapixels I would rock it all day long.
I haven't used mirrorless cameras much in general, but among DSLRs, canon always did range and colour better than the others, in terms of colour canon has done way better on browns in general and darker skin tones in particular, and there are tons of ways to shoot and edit to get more dynamic range if needed, people are maybe not actually understanding their gear or ramping up their skills enough, we learned the basics of HDRs in 2nd semester.
I've just recently bought the R last month whist travelling in South Korea. I weighed up getting the R5 and R6 but for me the R ticked all the boxes and I got a good deal on it! I managed to get the camera plus the RF 24-105mm f4l is USM all in for £2300 so it was a no brainer for me! The very nice Korean lady in the Canon store even made me a coffee then threw in a free SD card and a rather nice EOS flask as well.. lol

Yes but the sensor which is the most important part of the camera unfortunately stays the same for me as I tested an old 1DX and let me tell you it’s still up there with the R5 (using adapter & EF lenses)Maybe the RF lenses might be the difference
Hearing the rumors just reaffirms that I made a good choice to purchase the RP this summer and wait to see what Canon comes up with. Been collecting lenses...
I actually made the jump from Sony back to canon. You’re right about how exhausting it is trying to keep up with new features and models. I film a lot of video but I figured if I could grit my teeth through the Sony a7sii overheating I can work around the r6 limitations as well. One thing I will say is canon ergonomics beat Sony in every way. The camera just feels much nicer to hold than my Sony did. However I wish they’d move the power button to the right side.
I believe I am going to go the Route of the R, ditching my Nikon d750. I am starting out and just need to get my hybrid workflow started the right way. The R seems to be the best option for the money IMO. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for talking about the physical ergonomics of it. I rented the RP while my 6D mark II was being fixed and I hated that I was forced to go back to the d-pad and I felt like the top dial was too far away from my thumb. The R seems right for me in terms of specs and price but the lack of a back scroll wheel is a deal breaker. I'm glad they went the scroll wheel route with the R6.
Tyler, you do great reviews - very likable. And you're actually a good photographer (unlike some of the tech reviewers). One minor complaint: you talk about the R5/R6 having physical controls the R lacks, but you didn't point any of them out in the video. For instance, how can you change ISO on the R5 that you can't on the R? I should also mention that you can use the Control Ring on either to change ISO without moving away from the EVF if you assign that function to it (and are using a Canon RF lens)
Actually I noticed that too when I was editing, I didn’t have enough b-roll of using the camera. The answer is that the back dial controls iso or exposure compensation. I’m constantly missing that on the R
I have the R6, love the R6 the image quality just blows every EOS R other than the R5 out of the water. The R is super slow when compared to the R6 in real world use.
@@Bizz2k It does,...plus being so small and discrete, it travels very nicely. But my biggest complaint is not being able to use the EVF because it sits so close to the body where my nose squished into the LCD.
I HAVE R AND RECENTLY PURCHASED R6, I shoot portrait and environmental portrait all the time, and to be honest, 45mp is over kill 90% of time, but I do like the ability to crop it really hard, sometime a really bad image can turn into an amazing piece is you crop it really hard.
I’ve had an EOS R for a year now and have loved it. It def has its limitations(mostly in video) but it’s served me well. I know everyone hates the Touch Bar but I actually love it. I set it to WB and set control ring to iso so I can easily adjust all my settings without needing to take my eye away from the viewfinder. :) it felt weird at first but after a couple weeks I feel like I’m able to adjust settings more quickly and accurately. If I only shot photos I’d be in love with this camera, but as a hybrid shooter I do feel like the video features are a bit lacking. However, I preordered the C70 so those two should be a great pair🙌
So, what’s the big problem with video? They are too heavy in 4K, if you don’t have a great computer (like the MacBook Pro m1chip). But what if I just wanna shot in HD?
Now I'm using the R and R5 , and I love them both, I find the R has it's own look in terms of colours , I shoot weddings for a living ang have no regtrets with both of them 😊👍
I am still going to Event jobs with a 5D4 paired w 24-70, and the original 6d which i pair w 70-200 and the R is sort of my backup that can do anything. I like the idea of keeping a few DSLR’s for the long term. But i hope to trade the r toward the r6 eventually. The r image quality strikes me as “muddy”
are you shooting in RAW on your C200 for videos such as these? That's what I do and then convert to pro res 444 in Canon RAW DEVELOPment and edit the rest in post.
I planning to step up from 7D Mk II to R6. I started shooting professionally 3 years ago and I´m struggling with dynamic range indoors, churches are dark, party places are dark... Face detection is a very useful thing at weddings, 7D Mk II has a super AF system but it´s old and doesn't detect faces and eyes... I end up with a ton of pictures focused on the wall behind the subject or on a lighter spot. The R6 could make the quality of my photos 100 x better and I could be satisfied with it minimum 6-7 years or more.
Holding out for the 90MP R5s coming February/March to upgrade from my R. Everybody has completely pounced on the R5 to where all the camera stores are completely behind on filling orders, and I feel like a ton of people are going to rip their hair out when the development of the 90MP monster s version is announced at the end of the year. Resolution matters if you're doing any kind of printing or cropping. Not everyone will need nor want 90MP, but I'd wager a ton of R5 owners will end up with some serious buyer's remorse.
Been loving the R so much for mostly photo, but lately as I've been getting more work on video it's definitely making me consider upgrading to the R6 soon...
Great review! Only understood 40% of what you were talking about, but still assume it was a great review! Gonna buy a D5 as my first time camera. Think it’s a good choice, maybe? Possibly? Think I know what I’m doing?
I use the 5dmkiv for hobby photography. I bought it around 2 years ago. when do you think its worth upgrading? (note* I'm not looking to upgrade atm, I'm just curious to know what you think)
I love my R, I don't really shoot video with it at the moment, but it was a huge step up from my (already awesome) 80d. I don't use the Touch Bar at all, but I do like the back panel focusing, and the ring for ISO has been super handy. Definitely agree that some smaller lenses would be nice (an affordable 50mm for example) but it's a genuinely great camera. My only gripe is that if I'm doing hip shooting the EVF sensor sometimes kills the back panel if the camera is too close to my torso which is a pain, I feel like knowing if the back panel is flipped out would be a great way of solving this.
AWESOME Review. You are great at cramming an hour of information into 12:30! Most reviewers “cram” 12:30 of information into 30 minutes or more! I have ordered the R6 and it should arrive next week along with a 70-200mm RF Canon lens! I’m a hobbyist who does photography 95% of the time, and 90% of that 95% is ice hockey photography. I’m currently using a 70D with an older Sigma 70-200mm APO DG EX and have the upgraded sport lens with IS that I’m testing, but IT’S HEAVY AS HE DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS!! The R6 seems to be the perfect upgrade for me into the mirrorless world...a bit faster and better dynamic range. Also looking forward to shooting with IBIS and a lens with IS as I have neither right now, and shooting hockey at low light with a 70-200 most of the time can get difficult! I’ll probably relegate the 70D to my Tamron 28-70 lens for the occasional close action shot (when shooting behind the net at the close goal, etc...).
Thanks! Sometimes it leads to comments that I talk too fast so hopefully this one was followable Sounds like the R6 was designed with you in mind, you’ll love it
You may want to check out this review of the R6 for sports photography, specifically figure skating. I know it's not quite hockey (haha), but the photography requirements and lighting conditions probably share a lot in common! th-cam.com/video/q364O4xGoi4/w-d-xo.html
I am starting a video company that focuses on 30 sec to 3 min commercial videos. Really been considering on buying the BMPCC 4K and the SH5. But Canon has some really affordable mirrorless camera's now, which one would you guys recommend? RP? R? R10? There's so much choice and not much for videographer options.
I am very new. Inwant great photos of coins and specifically the errors on them. I have the t7 and I just got the ultra macro 2.5 to 5x Laowa lense. Still issues with focus after the pic. I zoom in on the error and not focused bad light. Lighting on the way via Amazon. Please advice to make the best photo. Think the sariff of a letter. Likenthe D being able to clearly show that there are 2 of them. Ideas advise????
I just bought two of the R and one of the R6. I often shoot alongside C200's, C300's, etc, and the image matches up impeccably when all shooting in Clog1. The RF lenses are my favourite thing though, they are definitely more video oriented lenses than photo oriented lenses which is a complete departure from anything any other company is making. Using the RF 24-105 f4 on the EOS R really feels more like an ENG camera or cinema camera than it does a DSLR. The R6 overheating does suck though, I really hope that a firmware update down the road can fix it for good because it really is the Achilles heal of the R6 and R5 for video. I've compared my R6 image quality to a colleagues Sony A73 and A7S3, and we're really splitting hairs on which one is better.
The EOS R is my next camera, coming from the 80D the EOS R is the most bang for my Buck. I finally enter Full frame and Mirrorless world with one camera, and I can still use all my L-Series Glass. For me this works best
Videos stay so well done I got m50 which I mount Ef lenses to like 85 canon 1.8 and sigma 18-35 (efs but whatever m) speed booster and and regular mount double focal length. All that to say it’s comparable to a rp I feel and cheaper just gotta deal with small body for me all I’ve known so it’s great!
Refreshing review. I'm so tired of hearing complaints about megapixels.. ask any DP working on film or Arri Alexa, and they'll tell you composition and lighting are more important than the latest specs. Of course, we have to shoot on something, but shooters really worry about specs to themselves I think... No client ever said.. "I think the dynamic range was one stop better on this last film you made for my compnay..' in fact, most people can't even tell the difference between good uprezzed 1080 and 4k. But hey, it sells.. so why not keep selling it. Great video. Subbed.
As the photographer for fun I am excited as I just ordered my RP from my original T6 that got me into photography. Excited for this upgrade and all those quality of life upgrades.
I shoot with an RP and love it. He has given it somone of the worst review ive heard. Majority of photographers praise what it can do at its price point. Id say its between the 6D and 5D
Hey Hello, Been seeing Videos about the Mirrorless camera and wish to get one, Do you mind sharing any as a gift to me this Camera any Canon EOS R. I so much want it. 👐🤲🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
So since you have used these R series a lot. I current shoot with and EOST6i. I want to upgrade to a mirrorless. I don’t shoot video at all. Only stills and all mostly low light for Billiards. Is the RP a huge step up from the T6i that I currently have?
Great vid buddy! I was debating the R + Ninja V or a BMPCC. I went with the Black Magic for now, as I'm making the video switch, but plan on picking up the R next year... Great for travel and will fit in my water housing!
This a great video to help me make a choice . Can you watch one of my videos . I use the Canon M6 ....... It's old but it works . Tell me what should I upgrade to ?
That is a great comparison of Canon’s offerings Tyler. Thinking about ditching my Nikon Z6 and go back to a Canon, because the images on the Nikon are too clean/clinical - which might be the current trend in cameras according to Omar Gonzales. The R having the 5DIV sensor might have a more rounded feel in the images? But what about the R5? Thanks for your videos!
This is great info but two things that came to mind for me as a eos R owner: I use the m-fn on the R for iso and virtually never have to take the camera away from my face to change it and what about external 10 bit in the R? I use mine with the ninja v and it looks great. Besides the full frame 4K I don’t really see a huge upside to the r5 for video, especially considering it’s nearly 2x as expensive.
It’s great that external 10-bit is possible but if it’s important to you it worth upgrading to the R6 rather than buying a Ninja. But if you already have both, you’re set! 🤗
Already own the R5. I love it! After 12 years I’m back on Canon wagon. Really, really looking forward to CLOG3 in the 4K modes. CLOG2 would be sweet, but I doubt we will see it in the R5.
I like the EOS R for Landscapes on a tripod. Makes great images if your exposure is correct. I prefer the R6 when I’m moving about. Shooting street photography, wildlife, events or travel. The speed and ergonomics of R6 big plus. Don’t shoot video. Couldn’t careless about overheating.
I’m way behind on the upgrade train for lots of reasons. Anyway, I have a Canon EOS 30d which I’ve loved but isn’t meeting my needs now. I mainly take action photos with some portrait. I think I would use the video capabilities, so I wouldn’t have to switch between my iPhone or camcorder during baseball games. I am concerned about all the reviews of the R5’s overheating when using the video, so I would probably get an R6. But I would like to see a review of the C70 & how it compares to the R’s. Can you do one? Thank you!
Great breakdown tyler! I’ve been in a 5d4 since the 2017 and love it. However, I was only doing photography then and now as a hybrid shooter, it lacks a lot of video features found in the newer cameras that would really benefit me. R6 or r5 definitely seem like the route!
I have both the Canon C70 and a7S iii preordered, but I’ll have to cancel one. I make documentary films and I want to get into commercial work. What are your thoughts on these 2 cameras & what would you choose if you were in my position? Love your videos + podcast man, thanks for the content ~
I've got the control ring adapter on back order once it finally ships I'm going to get the R, rented it this summer and loved it but agree with the lack of controls which is why I am waiting for the control ring adapter to finally get it.
Tyler, thank you for posting this informative, pragmatic, and sensible review of all this gear. Seems like most R5 videos go way over the top with clickbait style rhetoric about overheating and Sony comparisions. I also actually liked your product placement ad for the Meural, I might seriously consider getting one (and use your affiliate code). Subscribed.
Not sure how you managed to do this but this was both condensed and extremely thorough! I’ve been wondering about the stopmotion firmware update for the R and RP which increases usability inside Dragonframe. The live feed gets boosted quite a bit in resolution making it supposedly a lot easier to see what you’re doing/focus.
Hey Tyler, I’m investing in gear to shoot real estate and I was looking at the EOS R; but since the R6 has full frame 4K which is wider and better for making rooms look bigger, and the 4K can go up to 60 FPS instead of 30, I figured it might make more sense to invest in the newer camera for the long haul. But you mentioned at the end of the video that there are over heating issues and as long as one doesn’t primarily shoot video then it shouldn’t be a problem. The problem is that I am primarily shooting video, so do you think that the over heating problem isn’t that big of an issue for constant videoing? Or do you think my money is better invested else where at that price? If so, what camera would you recommend for someone primarily shooting video at the R6 price point? Thanks for the great info!
Interested in the R6, not seeing enough reason to move over from GH5 though. Maybe the 80D gets the R6 upgrade. The A7Siii will make me switch main cams, but its a very pricey switch and so... might as well upgrade audio and lighting instead! Who knows, maybe by the time it comes down to around 2K canon or Pansonic will have dropped some healthy bombs!

Then I can pounce on used R5 bodies 😎
Is it the camera you use in this vid?!
Been loving the R so much for mostly photo, but lately as I've been getting more work on video it's definitely making me consider upgrading to the R6 soon...
EOS R6 is not in the UK stock right now :(
Can you please share the name of the camera that you used to shoot this video ?
I own the R got it super cheap at B&H... LOVE IT.
B&H? Link if possibly mate 👍

Great review! Only understood 40% of what you were talking about, but still assume it was a great review! Gonna buy a D5 as my first time camera. Think it’s a good choice, maybe? Possibly? Think I know what I’m doing?
I have the R6- no complaints here!!
Just purchased the R6 while keeping my R. Still adapting EF lenses while waitig for cheaper RF lenses such as RF 50mm 1.8
I intend on following your path, I have the 80D currently and plan to get EOS R next year (2021). Your comments are very handy and helpful.
@@michaelthomas2865 you’ll definitely have a good time, excited for you!
@@jimboshizz thank you.
Sold my Nikon d7100 and bought the R.. so excited
Thanks! Sometimes it leads to comments that I talk too fast so hopefully this one was followable
Sounds like the R6 was designed with you in mind, you’ll love it
Tyler Stalman I grew up in NY...you can speed up more if you want !! LOL
Great video! I'm am amateur with a 6D so I think I'm going to go with the RP.
I heard they did this update for the overheating. Can you confirm it? Thank you!
Hi just want to ask, if we use canon mirrorless, can we still use the EF lenses from previous DSLR series? And will the autofocus works?
The EOS R is my next camera, coming from the 80D the EOS R is the most bang for my Buck. I finally enter Full frame and Mirrorless world with one camera, and I can still use all my L-Series Glass. For me this works best
Which camera are you using to shoot this vlog?
Is there an adapter for the RF to EM? I have an M50 and I'd like to share leases . Thank you
the answer is a7s iii !! X)
Is the canon m50 mk1 a good beginner and photographer camera??
Subbed.
Bought the R! Thank you for your advice!
Got an R for $1300 on eBay. Definitely worth it with the price drops.
Yup copped a 5DSR for $1499. Great second body to my 5DM4 I had for years.
Hey Hello, Been seeing Videos about the Mirrorless camera and wish to get one, Do you mind sharing any as a gift to me this Camera any Canon EOS R. I so much want it. 👐🤲🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Which camera do you guys suggest for photography only?
So since you have used these R series a lot. I current shoot with and EOST6i. I want to upgrade to a mirrorless. I don’t shoot video at all. Only stills and all mostly low light for Billiards. Is the RP a huge step up from the T6i that I currently have?
Thank you for this! Short, sweet, and too the point!
Great vid buddy! I was debating the R + Ninja V or a BMPCC. I went with the Black Magic for now, as I'm making the video switch, but plan on picking up the R next year... Great for travel and will fit in my water housing!
If you shoot more video than photo, BMPCC is the right choice
You should have included the M6 MK II
Hi, I really liked your video. I would like to know which camera you used to shoot this video and the lens you used. Thanks :)
Sony which mirrorless camera is better
This a great video to help me make a choice . Can you watch one of my videos . I use the Canon M6 ....... It's old but it works . Tell me what should I upgrade to ?
Hope you had a good time in Portugal 🙂 Nice shots and very comprehensive video. Congrats
I’m in doubt buying a R6 or R.
For fine art (large and medium prints)
I'm looking into the R6. But I'm not liking the tipping of the camera. (this is a mirrorless problem in general)
Thank you!
I thought the RP was to cheap and I couldn’t afford a R5 or R6 so t got a R. I’ve had A T5, 80d, 90d, 5d mkIII, so yes I a big canon fan.
You have the control ring that you can change the iso on
Are you moving from the R. If yes, which camera you are going for? The quality kf your c200 video is amazing. Thanks for the good video
I don't consider Eos R for its Price it didn't have dual card slots so cannot spend above 2k on single card slot camera.
The photos of the Meural Wi-Fi Photo Frame are from my country, Portugal! 😃
I've got the control ring adapter on back order once it finally ships I'm going to get the R, rented it this summer and loved it but agree with the lack of controls which is why I am waiting for the control ring adapter to finally get it.
I am considering buying the EOS R for Black Friday
That photo frame device is actually pretty nice
First TH-cam sponsor plug that has actually intrigued me, haha
@@ryanlarose.photography yeah but then I checked the price 🙈🙈🙈
Id love to see a comparison between those and fuji/nikon/sony
I will get the R as my main vlogging and photo camera.
Subscribed.
How did you add that red focus tracker in the video? Must have added in post :)
That’s not something I’ve tried! Probably not enough reviews out there covering stop motion features
I heard that they solved this problem with an update. Not sure tho, check it out 😉
Interested in the R6, not seeing enough reason to move over from GH5 though.
Torre de Belém - Portugal in the back! Let’s gooooooo! 🇵🇹 🔥
Wow! How did you like Lisbon/Portugal?
So good, I wish we could go back right away
@@stalman I live in Lisbon! If you're ever here again and need guidance through the city hit me up @tomasecardoso ! Would be glad to help :D
For the R6, when you have 2 people in frame, does eye detection lock on both subjects?
It will prefer the closer subject and you can switch between them
Historically the Sony new camera train was a thing but Canon just released two somewhat confusing mirrorless cameras and will (rumored) release the R1 pro mirrorless in a few months. There’s a lot happening to say the least! Lol
