      I'm team DSLR 'cuz Mirroeless systems are not that better than DSLR's... DSLR's can be bought I guess for 2 more years, by then the Mirroeless systems' technology would've evoluted.

      Team DSLR, because of the advantage you have with lens selection and an optical viewfinder, makes it great to take pictures, it is heavier but I prefer the weight.

      Mirrorless is better. Mirrorless give the full frame unlike DSLR. DSLR they call it cropped frame which forces you to go far if you are using lense like 50mm.

    Firstly Thanks for a superbly informative video. I have progressed through 3 generations of photography, from shooting and developing film (as an airforce photographer), to my digital DSLR shooting fashion...having all that gear stolen, and so having to get all new gear, I chose to go mirrorless, and do not regret it at all. These cameras and lenses are smaller and lighter, and as I shoot mainly landscapes now, as a more mature guy, I'm grateful to hike with less weight, but still come home with epic shots to edit. DSLR is not dead (yet), but it is on life support at the moment. For me mirrorless is the future and I look forward to the next generation.

    I personally like DLSR because the battery lasts for days, and photos seem to be instantaneous, what with the system not solely relying on software. I also like the idea that my sensor is hidden away most of the time.

    • @cswann8

      That's a great point. A DSLR body with the vertical grip that adds a second battery means you'll more likely run out of memory card space before you drain your batteries.

    One of the best informative video about this topic that I have ever met (I watched a lot). I also highly appreciated that you cited all the references of your sources and paid tribute to the creators. I am still for DSLR since I am buying the current technology. But I guess, in the near future I will be going for mirrorless cameras...

    I am currently shooting my youtube videos on my iPhone 7. I'm thinking of buying a camera, and your video has helped me to make a decision. I'll get a Canon mirrorless. I think I will get a M50. I need something basic and easy to use. I would make just a suggestion to your video, to remove the background music in the middle, maybe just leave at the beginning and the end. Just a suggestion. I really like your style of teaching. Thank you.

    • @djmartinez5054
      @djmartinez5054 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like the right choice for video. The advantages of DSLR cameras wouldn't really apply in your situation. One uses the optical finder on a DSLR only for still photography. And the longer battery life of DSLRs applies during still photography work, as well. However, when one is shooting video, either platform would be draining a lot of battery energy. I'm still using a Canon Rebel T7i dslr for video. It's great, but I may need to jump over to mirrorless mainly because of the lenses Canon is making for that platform. A huge issue with many Canon lenses for DSLR is how noisy they are, which makes them almost useless for video work --- unless you're recording audio on a separate system.

    Thanks for this excellent overview. I still stick with my "hybrid" Nikon D780: the best of both worlds so to say. I like the 2000+ shots on a single battery charge and with a DSLR it is easier to focus in poor light. And yes, psychologically, I like to directly see what I am about to photograph. But my next camera (in 5 years?) will probably be mirrorless I suppose.

    Currently just purchased the Nikon z6ii going from a D3s flagship dslr and As much as it’s an amazing camera, light weight, the focus is great, I am struggling with the learning curve. The EVF is not my thing, the delay seems like a lot, I feel like I’m playing with too many buttons a lot. And the battery life is terrible. I’m not used to charging daily. I’m leaning towards a return and upgrading to a D5

    • @kasabov5747

      May I offer my review, I bought M50 a little more than month ago. The camera is really good, it is my first camera different than smartphone, so I can't really compare it. However you quickly realise it's shortcomings, for me the downsides are the 4K is nearly unusable with its crop and the terrible autofocus, and the 120fps is only available in 720p, which isn't completely unusable, but if you love slow mo you deffinitely wanna go 1080p 120fps (the m6 mkii has).
      󠀀
      As you can probably guess, I'm a lot more into videography than photography. I'm doing some photos here and there, but nothing serious. I would've easily went for the m6 mkii instead, IF it had flip-out screen and built in viewfinder. That being said, there's been rumors that later this year, Canon will release new M bodies, the guesses are that there might be new version of the M50 (suggesting it will be named M60) with 4K uncropped with DPAF (one of the best AF), 1080p120fps, IBIS and hopefully they'll keep the nice body the M50 has (I wouldn't mind some more added physical dials and buttons).
      󠀀
      As far as photography goes, I did notice some shortcomings aswell, my biggest complains being the dynamic range (maybe user error here, but it's really hard not to overexpose or underexpose especially if you have complicated frame with lots of things). Many times I find myself having to choose what I wanna over/underexpose rather than keep the whole scene properly exposed. Another thing, the ISO is sort of meh, if you're into low-light situations, you deffinitely wanna pick up a fast lens (f1.4 or f1.8 should do), the kit lens is pretty bad at low-light.
      󠀀
      All that being said, I'm happy with my purchase I think what I got deffinitely is worth the money, and I'll be eagerly awaiting Canon to release upgraded version of the camera, hopefully addressing the shortcomings!

    • @pbanthonyv
      @pbanthonyv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kasabov5747 I have an M50 as well. I found it for a great deal and upgraded from an M100 to get around the shortcomings of the M100. The M50 is better in a lot of ways but I completely agree with every word you said. The M6Mkii is an extra couple hundred for the EVF and it's base price is a little higher as well, then you need to need to buy more stuff to move things around so the screen is more usable and you can't use a Mic and the EVF at the same time I think. None of these things are deal breakers but I agree that waiting for the M60 might be the best move IF video is very important to you.
      Also the M50 dynamic range is not great but I don't think it's much behind other cameras. Coming form a smart phone it seems like the dynamic range is really bad but smart phones actually have pretty bad dynamic range. It's just that they work some black magic with all of the processing power that they have, you can do the same by shooting raw and post processing or using HDR modes.

    I recently made the switch between Canon DSLR and Fujifilm Mirrorless. Best decision I ever msde. Size, weight a huge difference. The EVF is out of this world. The electronic Shutter is crazy fast and quite, pretty awesome for panning. Focus peaking is life changing. The only downside to mirrorless is battery life. So for me Mirrorless is the best. As great as the DSLR systems were they are now a thing of the past, mirrorless is the future.

    While I love the tech that is coming out for mirrorless, as it currently stands DSLR lenses are cheaper for the same quality, which is one of the reasons I went with a DSLR. Switching to mirrorless would mean trading my secondhand $700 tamron 70-200 f2.8 for the rf mount version from canon at $2800 used is just NOT happening. I know that Tamron and other 3rd party lens companies are moving into making mirrorless glass, so interested to see where things will go.
    I also find DSLR's just felt better in my hands.
    If I had infinite money, I would have my DSLR for things where I need a longer lens (action/wildlife/etc), and then have a mirrorless that I keep in my purse 24/7 for everything else. I admit that the DSLR is just kind of chonky for everyday carrying around, and a mirrorless would do just fine with a short little lens :)

I will soon own my first ever dslr, a nikon d750 which is the highest level of dslr camera I can presently afford. Mirrorless digital cameras are slowly beginning to win me over. I'm all onboard with Mirrorless camera bodies, because of the advancements in technology. However, I just want this mirrorless technology to be used with my beautiful F-mount lenses. I've yet to see any difference in photo quality between a mirrorless lens vs an F-Mount DSLR lens except for maybe the difference in sizes (physically). The Nikon D780 is Nikon's response to my petitions ( and many others), however, for me, a built-in flash is essential and 4k 60fps is needed in today's video market. I was out at night in a protest where there were no flashes, lights, etc, and the built in flash came in handy for those casual photos for when my flash unit was not readily available. Overall, I hope to see a Nikon D790 or beyond that will enfuse this new mirrorless technology firmly with the F-mount family, the D780 is def a step in the right direction. Great video. BTW, not sure if you have, but could you do a photo comparison between the D780 vs a another mirrorless camera body so as to see the photos side by side?, I would like to see the Nikon D780 use a F-mount lens vs a mirrorless lens on a mirrorless camera body made for that camera to see the diff in image quality. Thank you.

      Get a mirrorless. Have both! I just got a mirrorless cannon m50 and it’s awesome. I still show my DSLR love with shooting with both.

    I currently only have DSLR however, having both mirrorless and DSLR will be great way to go for me. Both team mirrorless and team DSLR have own advantage, if you need to do a job that required to shoot whole day having DSLR will definitely be helpful but mirrorless would be easier to get exposure quicker. Lucky I didn't switch to mirrorless too early as technology of mirrorless will only get better and better.

    I have found that Battery Rating and actual battery life is not close. On a recent outing I had my Sony A7r4 (with a battery that was a little over a year old) in weather that was -2 to 0 C. During this trip the first battery lasted for about 5.5 hours and 1100 shots. I took a lot of high burst rate shots with AF-C through the EFV which per guide is the most battery intensive action I could take outside of video. I have been out on full day trips (>12hrs) and have never used more than 2 batteries while taking thousands of shots. I think the Battery Ratings are just the manufactures just stating a number with no actual testing behind the value.

    Three years after this video posted and I continue to use my 35mm and 6x7 film cameras. Occasionally I'll use my dslr to confirm an exposure and composition for a film image. And all of my expensive glass, for my 35mm slrs, work without modification on my dslr. I just don't see the advantage of spending thousands of dollars on new technology that I'm not likely to take advantage of.

    For now I shoot with DSLRs, preparing to venture into the mirrorless soon. Have been a canon shooter and partly haven't gone mirrorless coz canon hadn't produced a good offering and shifting brands is always stressful. Now that Canon has mirrorless bodies, its gonna be easy to go into that system without the stress of switching.

      Canon stepping their mirrorless game up certainly has made it easier for those who want to stay within the Canon ecosystem.

    Team DSLR here, but I'm grandfathered in. To anyone thinking of getting seriously into photography go mirrorless if you're OK investing in all new gear, have the money to spend and plan to travel. Mirrorless is smaller and lighter, great for moving around. Can you smell a ..
    ...but, if you're trying to get a good kit put together for a limited budget, DSLR is the way to go. Used bodies are a way to save money (but buy new if you can). Get one with shutter counts as low as possible and only buy from reputable re-sellers (make sure your Ebay seller is well established in photography gear). And used lenses are for sure the way to save bigly. The risk is much less than with bodies so generally speaking, getting burned on a used lens is extremely rare, but again, buy from reputable re-sellers.
    And don't forget to factor in accessories into your budget. Memory cards, external flashes (all built in flashes are shit, don't use them), straps, bags, and no serious photographer doesn't own at least one good tripod.

    Mirrorless is an amazing jump forward. I look forward to seeing the all the talented photographer's putting this technology through its paces. Mirrorless would be my first choice. I'm loving the advanced auto focus advantages you will find in the mirrorless camera. And don't get me started on the high quality output options.

      It’s not an amazing jump forward. That is just patently false. Horse drawn carriage vs 2020 Acura RDX A-spec is a huge jump forward. DSLR to mirrorless are just two modern ways to take a photo.

    I switched back to a DSLR after trying Sony and Fuji. Size doesn't matter when your lenses are big. I'm also not a videographer. Optical viewfinder all the way. I'm never going to look back.

    Many thanks for this video.. Need one suggestion!!! I have been using Nikon D5600 over last couple of years and was thinking to upgrade to Nikon D850. My most of photography is related wildlife captures. With this video, I feel my doubts about performance of mirrorless cameras are answered.
    Considering my requirement... Do you think I should go ahead with Nikon D850 or should buy any other mirrorless camera?? Which one do you recommend?? Thanks

    • @djmartinez5054
      @djmartinez5054 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What is "art"? Paintings hanging on a wall? Sculpture? Outdoor murals? If you're shooting indoor 2D artwork, I think the camera that you choose isn't that important. Much more important are the lights that you use. But if you're starting from scratch, you might as well jump into the mirrorless camera/lenses world.
