    Well done Brian and Jonas and a great review! As a current EV owner, I would be very happy to take ownership of a Taycan. I love the effortless and quiet delivery of power. I will never go back to a combustion-engined car.
    Excellent design. Clean lines without nonsense like fake air intakes or vents. It's refreshing to see a car with a great alternative to animal-skin interiors from a premium manufacturer. Well done, Porsche! I would have liked some physical knobs for the climate control, but I think I could get used to the touch screen. I understand that the Turbo badging is in line with that of other Porsche models, but I think they could have come up with something more in keeping with a new electric platform. I would go for one with a panoramic roof, perhaps in Thomas Blue.

    In regards to your question about braking in a heavy car such as a Tesla: you definitely feel the weight when braking. Most of the braking is like you said with the regen braking. But when you do need the brakes you definitely feel it. But I would hazard and say Porsche have better and bigger brakes than a Tesla and therefore they might have mitigated that weight to a greater extent

  • @cmacd8879
    @cmacd8879 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Regarding Brian's fear of accidents due to excessive speed in such a heavy car, I think this is valid. My Range Rover weighs less than this, still heavy, but does not encourage the speeds that the Taycan does, so you never really get into situations where the weight will cause you problems. It will in this car.

    • @supaahflyy
      @supaahflyy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeh agreed. I got a Tesla model s which is a porker, a little bit lighter than the taycan but heavy nonetheless and you definitely don't want to drive too fast when slowing down such a heavy car in slippery conditions

  • @ronb4633
    @ronb4633 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the review. Many good details, but a few things that did concern me.
    1. The comments on the"flying saucer noise". Well I don't mean to argue what you may personally think of when you hear it but Porsche has clearly stated in other videos that the sound is NOT artificial, it was recorded from the actual sound of the motors with some synthesizer enhancements.
    2. The concern on breaking, I have watched so many other videos and no one had brought that up. Also Porsche has put on 10 piston ceramic coated steel breaks standard on front of Turbo, I think Carbon Ceramic are standard on Turbo S. Porsche does this because they worry so much about breaking performance to verify repeatability from 80% of vmax to 50mph. I have not been blessed yet to try the Taycan, but I expect to be more than satisfied with it's breaking performance.

    That AC display setup is exactly why I prefer the Mercedes S/E/GT 4 door etc set up, wrap around screens and then physical buttons and toggles you can actually use while driving. Until voice controls get good enough (and we can all agree they won't be able to change where it's sending air, only on/off) physical controls will always be better than digital screens.

    Porsche has always given their cars brakes that are rated about 4X their engine output for the very reason of safety and control not to mention ultimate performance on the racetrack. Hence you noticed those massive yellow PCCB brake calipers are there to provide hydraulic assisted conventional braking in addition to the regenerative braking you spoke of, So stopping quickly a 5000 lb car will be manageable. Can't wait to see full performance testing articles soon.

    The Porsche HVAC interface may be all glass. But at least it has icons that resemble buttons we know, along with the haptic feedback. So it doesn't seem so bad to me (though I prefer volume; station changing, and temperature fan buttons myself). However, you can do a good deal through the steering wheel controls and Voice Command.

    This was an excellent review! Thoughts on the touch panels, when the state-of-the-art interactive hi-tech consumer electronic products - being smartphones and apple watches - manufacturers and developers poured in countless of hours and money into the developments, yet still retain some sort of buttons and knobs should be enough to suggest how a level of physical interface presence is needed to achieve the perfect intuitiveness, in the best interest of the consumers. Car manufacturers should take note of that going forward implementing full-on touch interfaces, it should be for the convenience of the customers not for the sake of "looking futuristic".

    • @nikoleknight2522

      I think everything in this video proved the technology is ready imo. And the cost of the vehicle has nothing to do with it being electric. Look at the panamera. It’s priced very similar. I think it’s worth the price.

    • @kevinn1158
      @kevinn1158 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nikoleknight2522 Here in Canada, the Taycan turbo costs 39k dollars more than a Panamera turbo. 5 mins to fill up your Panamera turbo to 100%, 22 mins at a rapid charger your Taycan to 80%. And the Taycan weighs 700 lbs more than the Panamera. (Winter weather and hot summers kills the range of all of these EVs as well.)
      And Elon pumping up his stupid pick up truck. Watch the range of that POS drop off a cliff once it tows something or has a load in the back of the truck.
      An Audi E tron costs 90k to start. An Audi SQ5 is 28k dollars less. That's like 10-12 years of petrol costs...

I'm having a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet (992) on order for spring 2020. I'm almost tempted to change the order for a Taycan Turbo (non-s). But not quite, probably. But if I would ever buy another car after the 911, chances are high that it would be a Taycan; which is not sure, due to my age and due to the general development of mobility in our society (I believe that in 10 years time OWNING a car will be the exception).

    Does it coast? When one presses the fast pedal and then lifts it up in a suttle manner, does it coast. What about when entering a curve and one breaks with the left pedal, does it have a progressive feel to it. This is my biggest concern. I drive my Porsche at a track and I would take a taycan there first day.
    What about drifting? I do not mean street drifting. I mean the treshold when exiting a curve at the limit with no driving aids.

    Those wheels are comical - ridiculously, unnecessarily massive. That said, this is by far the best EV the world right now.

    It's funny seeing PORSCHE come out with an electric car when just a few months ago I told some car enthusiasts that we're only a year or two away from the electric boom on the car market and was laughed at.
    I mean, it's PORSCHE! A sports car brand. If such a brand develops an electric car you know they know that change is imminent and the combustion engine's time is up.
    Nice review! And an awesome car. Sadly though with a price I'd never pay for ANY car.

    50:00 Um. You're sure the supposedly weak braking is down to the weight of the vehicle and not because you were driving in the wet? Autogefühl never mentioned anything about long braking distances with the Cayenne and Panamera Turbo S E-hybrid which both weigh roughly the same as this and don't have that amount of recouperation braking on top of the carbon-ceramics. Braking distances can increase substantially in the wet with any vehicle.

    He didn't mention one very important thing: This car doesn't offer the one-pedal driving enjoyment one has with many other BEV's. I understand why, to make it more authentic on the track, but it should at least be offered optional in the menu settings - it's a very nice feature in the city.

    Hey, thanks for the informative video! Can I just check something, regarding the costs, to use the Ionity network is free for the first 3yrs and you PAYG for the actual energy you use. After the 3yrs does the gentleman say that it'll cost 8 Euros per session to use the Ionity network plus the PAYG charge for the energy you use, but that hasn't been finalised just yet?

    The all screen control is a disaster. It totally undermines any claim by Porsche of being driver-centric and sacrifices safety just for a short-lived cool factor.
    The control of the vents is also terrible; not because there needs to be more settings, but because you need to go swimming through menus to get the air out of your face. With traditional vents you can flail blindly at the air while driving and it'll just work.
    I hope automakers wake up from this no button fever dream. Volvo and Subaru also have made their controls as bad as possible to fit in big screens, Toyota even put one of these monstrosities in the top trims of the Prius.

    • @MaxMustermann-zp5xy
      @MaxMustermann-zp5xy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I agree with you on the vent controls you have to take into account that all modern premium cars have good voice control systems. I don't know how good Porsche's is but I recently played around with the Mercedes MBUX and found it to be excellent. Having voice control changes a lot since it's even less distracting (and thus safer) than buttons.

    185,000 staring price is staggering for an electric car! If i wanted to go green and start hugging trees which I don't but I'd probably save a bunch of cash and get the Tesla model S performance at 105,000! Not sayin it's the quality of the Porsche but I could buy a Boxster with money left over for the weekend! Hopefully the money tree in the back yard i plated starts throwing off some Franklin's!

    Why touch screens instead of good old buttons and dials? Imagine trying to press a touch screen button on a kinda rough surface. You miss it and press some other button like it happened to me today with my tab.

  • @964tractorboy

    I can't get over the lack of real buttons. It never ceases to amaze me that touch-screens aren't banned on a safety basis.

    • @nikoleknight2522
      @nikoleknight2522 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems a lot of people are stuck in the past with the whole “buttons or nothing” ideology. Buttons make a car look dated and tacky. we need screens for navigation, etc. plus most cars today accelerate so quickly, physical tachometers can’t keep up.
      I don’t see what the big deal is about safety. You have to look away to press something no matter if it’s a button or a screen...
