  • #HoustonRockets guard Reed Sheppard is right up there as one of the most unique prospects I have ever evaluated. How will the Wildcats playmaker's historically efficient season translate to the #NBA, and where will he go in the 2024 #NBADraft?

    Nice analysis, thanks! Sheppard kind of reminds me of Fred VanVleet, though he might actually be the better shooter of the two. The way he's able to play great defense as an undersized, not-very-athletic guard, the high-volume three point shooting on and off the ball, the passing, the questionable offensive game in the midrange and paint. FVV has turned into a very good playmaker and ballhandler, but let's not forget that was a part of his game he had to develop over time.

      Makes sense as a comp for all the reasons you mentioned. Glad you brought up the development and strides Fred had to make. Those are key for NBA guards who are on the smaller side.

    I was waiting for this video. He seems really solid other than rim pressure. He seems like a decent facilitator that Rockets needs since FVV is on 2+1 deal and Amen Thompson while his ceiling is very high, it'll take time to get there especially considering his jumper.
    A question though, Kentucy seems to be famous with its guards. Is there any forward or center equivalent of that on college level?
    This channel deserves to be bigger btw.

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Thanks, I appreciate you! Houston is a nice theoretical fit. I think they have the size to insulate Reed and all of their guys can more or less handle the ball to an extent, so there wouldn’t be that much pressure on Sheppard to become a primary imitator.
      My concern here is that it seems like the Rockets want to accelerate their timeline to truly compete, so I wonder if the moves for them going forward will be for already established NBA players. That said, even if they theoretically drafted Sheppard and he didn’t work out, the state of their roster also means it wouldn’t be a big setback.
      Regarding the question about a program that produces bigs the same way Kentucky produces guards, I’m not too sure - but Shaka Smart had a great track record at Texas (that school in general actually until recently had a lot of NBA bigs such as Tristan Thompson, Mo Bamba, Jericho Sims, Greg Brown…) and now he has Oso Ighodaro at Marquette.

Im not worried about his size and physical tools because we’ve seen this argument so many times yet we have Fred vanvleet, TJ mconnell, mike conley, jose alverado who are all positive defenders despite being small and not hyper athletic. It also feels low risk as its much easier to know what his floor is as a player. Ideally i would want the rockets to trade down to 5 but im okay with them drafting reed at 3.

    Not sure I see the #1 or #2 option on a team for the reasons you mentioned. But I do see an impact player, maybe even a high level one due to all of the elite micro skills. And for that reason he's currently 5th on my board. I trust him much more than many others in this class.

      The college game and the NBA are so different in terms of skill and size, and I worry that Reed's feel and IQ might only get him so far if he suddenly has to start beating 6-foot-4 defenders off the bounce or guarding a 6-foot-6 attacker in space.

His handles can be better but he doesn’t need to use his handle to score. He’s got more combined Steals/blocks than any guard n country. His pass game is nice too.. Sheppard's defense is so interesting and reminds me a lot of the way CP3 plays defense. A combination of sharp read and superb timing. It's like he knows where you're going to put the ball before you do and just put both his hands there in advance. Sheppard is an intriguing player.
    On one hand his stats are impressive and not just because of his 3-point shooting, but because of his all-around efficiency.
    But on the other hand he has athletic limitations that will affect him in the NBA mainly on defense and playing towards the basket.
    Other years we would possibly be talking about a late first round player, but the thing is that in this Draft Sheppard can be in the lottery or even in the top-5 and I don't see him with the level to do it.
    Possibly his ceiling is players like TJ McConnell (who was undrafted) or Pritchard, but for that he will have to prove a lot of things in the NBA.

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sheppard is a good player who sees and thinks the game at a very solid level for being so young, but I still have very real questions about him despite a historically efficient season.
      He creates very little for himself, especially at the rim. Sheppard cannot break defenders down off the dribble and then, he lacks the size and pop (despite his draft combine testing numbers) to functionally finish over bigger defenders and bigs in the paint. He struggles to even get paint touches at times, which is a huge difference between him and someone like TJ McConnell for example.
      I also think Sheppard's passing is being a little overvalued. He played with 2 or 3 other ballhandlers at Kentucky all of the time. When Sheppard had to consistently create in the pick-and-roll, he had issues killing his dribble early, turning the corner against longer+more physical defenders, and creating enough space to play comfortably.
      In prior draft classes, I doubt he'd be getting this type of hype even with his shooting numbers. I understand why a lot of people have Reed close to or in their top five, but I cannot really even place him in my top 10 and feel great about it. Drafting him in the late lottery is what I'm most at ease with, and I think that's where Sheppard also has his safest outcome and will also return adequate value.

      It's an interesting balancing act at Kentucky. All three of their point guards could see their stock boosted by even more touches, but I also think it's worked really well to have Reed share the ball with DJ Wagner and Rob Dillingham. Antonio Reeves as well, even if he's a 2 guard, is also incredibly productive and having a fantastic season.

      That’s absolutely true. College productivity doesn’t need to carry over to the NBA. In Reed’s case, I think it’s fair to question this even more. Even though I love his feel and I think it’s worth finding out what he can do in the NBA with the ball in his hands more, it’s also very natural to wonder how he will fare against more size+length+athleticism and what happens to his efficiency if he’s asked to create off the bounce more.

    @devogoddard3799 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    You gotta remember that slashing isn’t gonna be his job. He’s gonna be the maybe bring the ball up and get an offense set up so he can come off a screen after the pass for a shot. He’s not gonna be used like a Bradley Beal or Manu , he’s gonna be a Kyle Krover Klay Thompson,

    • @FloorandCeiling
      @FloorandCeiling  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Sure, I can get behind that but Klay Thompson is around 6-7 and he's even playing the 4 nowadays. Kyle Korver was the same size. Sheppard is probably at least 5 inches shorter, if not 6, than both of those guys.
      He needs to have more juice on the ball imo. He doesn't need to be Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with how he gets into the paint, but he needs to become more dangerous off the bounce if he is to be a full-time point guard. To his credit, he's shown more of that in the last few games, though.

    Other than shooting, what has he developed? He needs more time at Kentucky, IMO.

      I think he showed he could produce at a high level, next to other star players, while being a vital member of a genuinely enjoyable team that could've won more.
      That said, with Mark Pope coming in at Kentucky, I'm staying posted as to what Sheppard's NBA decision is. I personally think he should declare, but he hasn't said anything yet when others (DJ Wagner, Thiero, Bradshaw, Justin Edwards...) have about their futures in Lexington.

    Too small for a 2 guard and not skilled or athletic enough to play p.g, i'd pick him in the second round.

      Those are certainly the concerns, though I would say it’s more so a matter of his creation off the bounce rather than his skill level. For me, his absurd two-way production, feel, and scalability next to others make him a surefire top 20 lock - at worst. But I’m still hesitant to move him past my late lottery.

    In your opinion he useless, but yet he's a lottery pick. Shows just what you know. I see why you only have four thousand subscribers.

      It's always fun too see players proves doubters wrong but no need to be so sensitive.
