- This week we chat to one of the only sculptors who hasn't worked at Games Workshop, Ian from Fenris Games. Ian's sculpting and modeling story is incredible, he's worked on movies, made 1:1 model trains, and now runs Fenris Games making loads of miniatures and scenery for the tabletop.

Great to see Ian on. He's possibly one of the nicest people in our industry.
What a fascinating guest, it's so refreshing having a podcast to listen to with interesting varied guests that I feel like we wouldn't hear the voices of many other places. The sheer amount of experience Ian has from working with miniature manufacturers, to creatives to big companies to film sets, like Red Dwarf! I am very jealous. Thanks for having him on!
The side track waffling is my favourite part of the show. Peachy GW stories, Pat's wedding stories, and Geoffs army stories are all perfect
Ian genuinely is the most lovely person I know in the gaming industry (the nice Viking, my kids call him) - really top bloke. Thanks for having him on here! Proper old school stuff x
you bumlicker Brownlie ;-)
You should ABSOLUTELY get more folks like Ian on, if you can - it's so fascinating to hear from people from all around the model making/"art industry" in general, even outside of the hobby.
Honestly, the quality of guests you guys get on is phenomenal, the additional waffle from the Peach & Co is just the icing on the cake- cheers guys
There was a section about model builders sneaking stuff in and I've got one to share. If you are familiar with the plastic army men (those green and grey ww2 ones) there was one with his arm in the air waving. One of these from the waist up has been built into the model of the executor from star wars, happily waving away.
I've done a little work for Fenris and can agree with everyone else, Ian is a top bloke
Yet another of those "Wow, I had no idea how interesting this visitor would be!" episodes. And on top of that I even got some good news out of it - having been a happy customer for bases I had somewhat stopped ordering since Brexit. Hearing that the shipping issues have been resolved makes me so happy, since Ian's bases are some of my favourites in the business!
So pleased to have resolved the shipping & tax issues!
You should have led with the fact that Ian worked on Red Dwarf!!! What an amazing career Ian has had. So interesting to listen to everything he's worked on. Such a wealth of knowledge and experience. I really enjoyed listening to this conversation. Thanks for continuing to bring on these amazing people.
Glad you enjoyed it, yeah he is a super awesome guest to listen too, that man’s done sooo much stuff in his career
What a fantastic guest. Seems to have done about 10x as much as Adam Savage . Keep these interviews coming I’m loving them
Very insightful and not to mention it was great to be introduced to Peachy's older twin brother Ian.
It's great to see Ian here. I've had the pleasure of doing some bits n bobs for Fenris Games. He's a top geezer and, like many others have already said, one of the nicest people in the business..
Fenris Games has a wealth of useful stuff in its catalogue. If you've not done so already, go over and give them a look.
The bretth of Ian's experience is staggering! Great interview and super interesting, thanks all ❤
Ian is the loveliest man in miniatures.
I always wondered how you got into model making for the film industry. A proper nice guy. You have some of the best guests on the show.
Big thumbs up for Ian. I have some of his Rubble City stuff and can highly recommend it 👍
Another great interview, so fascinating! My wife's aunt works for Seymour Powell so funny to link that world to the world of miniatures.
Sounds like an amazing career to have and be so skilled in. I feel like I'm being shown an entirely different world of creative existence
An excellent interview, really interesting subjects and a man with tons of experience to boot.
Great interview, nice to see someone coming at modelling from a movie/non GW angle. Also you're using initialisms, not acronyms (I knew my english degree would come in handy eventually, £20,000 well spent)
Thanks for another great discussion, another great guest. Ian's work is wonderful, highly recommended 🤩
One of the best companies around! Still haven’t gotten around to paint some of their beastmen, but I will be doing so soon.
Love Fenris Games! Looking forward to this one.
Fantastic to hear all these stories from Ian, Fenris been a long time favourite hobby company
He has to be one of the coolest guests you have had on so far, but then I’m bias as id loved to have done his job and education in the movies and stuff!! But i got talked down and pushed towards other stuff that bored me which meant i ended up in the Army!!
Listening to him talk was very inspiring and an absolute joy 😊😊😊 good going lads 😎🍺🍺🍺🍺
Very interesting! Thoroughly enjoyed it thanks. I have loads of Ian's bits and pieces from over the years.
Some great stories this episode!! Movies , miniatures and behind the scenes stuff, keeping my Tuesdays interesting every single week, cheers.
This was a fantastic episode! Being a fan of behind the scenes for movies and watching Tested with Adam savage on YT. This was like that. Super informative and indepth. Could have listened for a few extra hours!
For my sins, I don't butter toast (or Crumpets and Sarnies, or indeed anything actually) but it's got to be with a thick layer of marmite on the slice, or when it's piping hit, smother the bugger with chunky peanut butter so it's nice and gooey when you eat it.
Great vid as always guys, thanks to Ian for his wonderful insights into the industry and his anecdotes.
Great guest!
Great interview with a wonderful human being.
That was sensational!!
What a fantastic chap, who has a wealth of knowledge and was privy to some of the nerdiest experiences available to man.
Bravo!
I’m certainly very jealous of Ian’s career, what a life of varied and interesting experiences.
Ooh, nice resin versions of some of the Cthulhu Wars miniatures… so tempting, and having waited for years for a CW kickstarter to deliver I am SHOCKED to hear that they may not be the greatest business people in the world (not actually shocked).
Excellent interview! You guys are having a fantastic run with these guests. And it's giving my mind something to focus on as I'm painting...
Absolutely fascinating and talented guest. Amazing to hear about the model making trade and the skill and knowledge behind it. Good show guys 👍
Yep, those scalpels are amazing, i got 4 that i have diffrent blades on so i can just grab one when i need it without changeing the blades
This has every thing, Miniatures, Movies, Geoff's Army Story's , Crumpets, and Most of All Hereford 😁😁...
Wasn't expecting that Thunderbirds chat....all I can say is more!!!...please.😂
Yes! Good to see Ian talking about the perks of sculpting (industrial quality glue, apparently)
I'll bring you some to Grogmeet, Doc. Useful in surgery, I reckon.
@@fenrisgames8107 Uh oh. I see Grogmeet disappearing in a solvent scented haze...:-(
Great interview :D Love the Fenris range :)
Fenris Games is my favourite place for scenery/terrain and weird miniatures.
I bought some lovely dice from Ian that said "For Fuck's Sake" instead of the number one. Very handy for all of the ones I roll. I just have to remember not to bring them to Warhammer club...
That's very interesting about "Faugh a Ballagh". My great grandfather had a boat which, until I actually saw a photograph of it, I thought as a child had been called "the fog and bollock" but was actually called "fàg an beallach" ( in the sense of "leave the road" as an ideal to use a different way of traveling rather than as an instruction to "clear the way").
Crumpets are effectively cooked in a very greasy pan, cooled, packed, and then you toast them. But you are mad if you don't butter them with actual butter.
impressive guest(s) as usual, I've not heard of him before but this was one of the most interesting interviews you've done
You guys are the best, great interview. Thanks so much.
As always - nice one chaps. The early half of the week is always made better by a fresh PP podcast. Also 4:57 - how much do I wish companies and studios nowadays were more willing to put faith in fresh talent. You can get relevant academic qualifications and degrees, build an extensive portfolio, even have success independently but more oft than not you'll hit the recruiters wall!
Edit; I'm not talking about model making as such but other creative sectors/industries.
Another great episode... really interesting to hear about commercial model making.
Holy moly, this is an interesting chat. As a mechanical engineer that works in production, I would love to have some of the experiences Ian has had!
Did have the Fantasy of somehow making a career out of modelling, and having not done that helps to know its a lot harder than I imagined it and wouldn't have made the grade. Also good to know that the people who are good enough play pranks. Always the sign of a happy workplace if everyone is in on the jokes.
Casually mentioning original Geiger xenomorph tongue in my collection as you do ... different times, different times indeed!
Yet again, another great guest. 👍
I've been checking out Fenris Games' catalog for a few years but never bought anything. Hearing the story behind the man and the minis, I definitely have to grab some stuff!
His stuff is great, I’m very much in love with his rubblecity stuff
Cool I always wondered who did the models for red dwarf , great work
In the 1st 1000 views! Get in, I'm getting good at this... cracking work as always lads.
Great guest, would love to hear more of his experiences.
He was amazingly awesome! 18000 cool points. 🎉
YESSS!!! Hi Ian!!
Babe wake up new 2 hour biscuit review dropped
😂😂😂
Really interesting about the halfords grey primer. I first used it a few years ago by accident, and found it is the best thing for contrast paints. The difference in outcomes from the same contrast paint applied over it is marked.
Great content ! Thank you as always 😊
Talking about switching to digital at about the 48 minute mark, Warp Miniatures designer Alex has perfecrlty replicated his hand scultping style in digital.
Another really interesting guest, brilliant stuff
Just for reference, HS1 isn't the Eurostar (but it uses many of the same stations). It's just a line that runs highspeed from St Pancras down through Kent - with various branches - run by South Eastern.
I've got some crazy modelling stories.....Ian, "hold my beer".
Looooove fenris games! Wooo go Ian!!
Yes, Ian!
I love me some Fenris Games. I found him because I needed 30mm round bases so I could use the new chonky terminators while still having them fit in the 30mm squares of 1st ed. Space hulk. Ended up loving them so much I built a whole tyranid army on them. Ian is good people
Architects also put the hidden things into their visuals too. I may have put Mary Poppins flying in the air, Zippo in the window, and others I will keep to myself. 😂
Love Fenris Games
The slapchop T-Shirt is everything!
YAY IAN!
Too late for the Kickstarter and so have missed out on the Dungeon entrance egg / contrast paint holder. Will they be available directly from Fenris games in the futures?
They will!
I’m the third person in the industry that’s never worked for Games Workshop lol! (Andrew May, Meridian Miniatures) I have worked for Ian before though.
I need that "Jurassic Punk" shirt
Great episode, interesting insight about model making and props.
Speaking of size, I'm still in shock since the episode when I found out that Duncan was taller than Peachy. I've always imagined Peachy to be the bigger and beefier guy and Duncan to be the small, scrawny one 😄
Hahaha! In the words of the great Yoda…….Size matters not mmmm
Ahhh guys, you started out so strong but it was the Thunderbirds that finally threw you! Alan was definitely some kind of war criminal and was avoiding being taken to The Hague, can’t get extradited if you’re in a private space station!
The Painting Phases unbroken podcast streak continues, another great episode!
Loved all the tips
Too bad the kickstarter is over, the paint holder looks fun!
Late Pledges should be up on the website soooon.
Great video, with a pillar of the indie wargaming community :)
Lovely chat, Ian looks like a great creative and artisian! But now I've to discover what the hell is a crumpet 😂. Question: I couldn't quite grasp the name of the gray primer he uses for resin miniatures! Can you help me?
Halford's Primer.
Checked out some of the scenery on Fenris, some great stuff that I'm going to get for MESBG games.
The rubblecity stuff is perfect for everything…..everything I say lol
@@thepaintingphase can’t argue with that! Just figuring out what I want to order…
Amazing show as always - regarding John Tracey, the space station thunderbird operator, Anderson apparently didn't like how his head came out and so he was banished ^^
😂😂😂😂 I thought the guy had murder the family pet or something as a child, but that makes far more sense
Anyone who worked on Listers ride is a friend in my book!
These videos are great to paint to. I’ve got so much more painting done than I would normally. I have a question for Geoff, where’d you get the slapchop T from? Want to wear it at the UK games expo next year.
Hi Geoff here, the Tee is from www.grmdrk.com/ Great t-shirts and nice people.
@@thepaintingphasecheers pal, appreciate it 👍
I always assumed it was Fully Acknowledged Broadcast!
Very interesting episode. I will be having a look at his site. I’d love to know what work he did with the Military and Police?
Lots of prototyping for the MOD and Defence industry, bitd. More recently, specialist teaching.
plus one from me for halfords primer
Haha I also sculpted that Dark Young miniature on the table 😂
Eyyyyyyyy! The man himself.
@@fenrisgames8107haha, it’s been a while, you had hair last time I saw you. 😂
@@Andrewjohnmay1983 Worst post apocalypse *ever*
Aeeiiii! Thanks all for the lovely comments. Even the Mike Tindall one.
I had some old Gerry Anderson annuals and it said FAB stood for Federal Action Bereau! I always thought that was a terrible phrase.
I thought wow Mike Tindall was a wargammer from the thumb nail. Would have been very topical to have that at the moment.
Very cool
I have a similiar paint pot holder for my washes that i put out to stop me knocking them over, mines made to look like 4 rebars holding my paint pot :)
John was up in Thunderbird 5 and originally it was supposed to be that he and Alan (Thunderbird 3) would swap positions every so often but it as a concept was kind of lost in during production and John ended up being stuck up there 99% of the time.
I had no idea there was so much info regarding the thunderbird anecdote lol
Thanks for the update 😍👍
@@thepaintingphase My dad is kinda obsessed with any and everything Gerry Anderson so I have a lot trickle down information.
American equivalent of no butter on a crumpet is a biscuit without butter. My mouth is drying out thinking about it.
To clarify, american biscuits are flour and shortening.
D&D Basic and Traveller :)
Finally we know why Peachy is still so fresh... he never left the art college biker period! (I'm born in 1980 and started warhammer in 1994, so you know i say this out of love, you bald bonkers boys!)
🏍️🧑🦲👍
About to watch the video but I have a very important question....
Where be Sean Bean? Much hype for that interview.
Hahaha! Same
