Hey guys, here’s a quick video of a few reasons as to why I hate the natural hair community. I really hope you guys enjoy this video just as much as I did recording this!

Honestly, I think it's so people know what their hair could look like in a certain style. You're gonna go to those who have the same hair type as you because you are able to relate.
Kutouru~Sama yeah, I wouldn’t say it’s a scam...I would say people are gullible, and as ole girl said aswell they are followers. When I big chopped in 2015 I’m NGL I was sooo excited to see my curly hair. (Because I thought all black people had similar curly hair.) Now I know we all have different hair, that’s ok and I’m still struggling 😜 but at least I know.
@@nomisinfo5244 yeah, it helped me when I was starting out, made it easier to find people with similar hair so I could follow their tutorials and stuff. But then, all I used was the number, because when it comes to the letters, I still don't know which one(s) I'm supposed to belong in lmao. And I don't care tbh, the hair typing system has done its job for me and I'm done with it💁🏽
YES!!! I hate how people say that natural hair is too much work when in reality they overmanipulate their hair. you can literally choose to wash, detangle, moisturize, and leave it in an afro and accept your hair in its natural state.

My hair flourished when I unsubscribed from a lot of youtubers and kept it simple: wash and deep condition with heat cap that was $16 online twice a week, followed by a daily leave in and oil, everything from the drug store. If a I want super defined curled I do a crochet style for a week and put a leave in to my scalp daily.
I also agree with the hostility. A woman made a video about how rice water damaged her hair. People were so mean to to her. I didn’t understand why they were so pressed. If she didn’t like it she didn’t like it.
Natural community is doing too much. Period! 😫 I just stick with black soap, aloe vera,oils and water . I'm done

I use to just use my Dax grease, moisturize and braids. I bought sooo much product listening to these people. I've gone back to what I use to use when I was young and my hair was great. Shampoo, condition, moisturize and keep it moving

The obsession with products in this community is weird. Products dont grow hair. Your hair will grow at the same rate. You just need to maintain the length using gentle routines. This is why lazy naturals tend to have longer hair. They dont constantly try fast growth gimmicks. I have been natural 2 years and my hair is longer than people who have been doing this for 5 years. I moisturize and leave my hair alone.
Actually products can really help with hair growth 😁 but there’s a lot other factors (diet, genetics, physical activity, etc.) and low maintenance is still important to retain lenght.
@@petitesboucles3617 I respect your view but, any help, if at all, that products help with hair growth ( I.e how hair grows from the shaft) is very minimal. They do assist with hair retention ( maintaining the length achieved which is what people tend to call " hair growth" ) though in conjunction with healthy routines. On their own however, they do little to help one achieve long natural hair.

Yo. I showed my cousin my hair and she doesn't have a curl pattern. She straight up told me I have 4b hair and her sister (who has the same hair as me) agreed. I was like "it doesn't matter" but she was like "it does, because mine is 4c!" Hers is harder than mine and its LP, mine is HP and a normal texture. She insisted that mine is 4b and easier to handle. I just gave in because I didn't have the time
@ Weird Myst People fail to realize how much porosity, strand thickness, and density affects how the hair looks and behaves under water and with products. I am type 4abc with high density, coarse strands, and low porosity. My hair has the tendency to shrink a lot, look really tight under running water, and laughs at most products to the point that I don’t even use them anymore. I just rely on my natural sebum and water. It works for me and even helps to stretch my hair a bit and keep it detangled and manageable.
"Be simplistic with your routine"
I hit armpit length having the simplest of regimens. After 2 years 7 months natural, I've figured out a simple routine that works like magic and that's that. Nobody can tell me nothing!

It makes me cringe when i hear people with 4c talk about curls in their hair. Babyy, as a 4c girl our hair is coily. The image that the word coil brings to mind and the word curls, its very different. 4c hair is not curly its coily. The middle part of my hair has softer coils and the perimeter of my hair has coarser coils. Simple. No curls, COILS

I think typing is so important to many bc it helps with styling. Watching 4c twist outs & bantu knot outs, as well as watching videos with people with 4c & type 4 hair helped me to love my hair and find hairstyles that suited me (as well as seeing 4c rep in a lot of top models). On that same token, I don't think that it's the most important thing in the world, and a lot of people take it too far. But it's def needed.

I understand what you mean I do love the way our hair ends up being so beautiful on the outcome but it’s when people lie about the products they are using or miss lead people just to buy certain products that don’t do nothing for their hair is crazy

As a person that has every single one of those patterns on my head, I promise you that pattern is the least likely reason for me to pick a product or style...multitexture people know this. I'm also mulitporosity and multidensity.
However, I cannot do any -outs because I have very fine stand that break off, and a cottony texture that leads to frizz. I do wings and keep my hair moisturized. My hair did not like acv or coconut oil. My scalp is high sebum producing, so I have to clarify frequently. I also have personal life choices that I choose to never wear wigs, weaves or braids.
And another thing. . . Folks need to stop crying and complaining over big chop videos. Coveting someone’s hair length makes you bald headed.

I agree 100% about looser textured hair people having struggles with their texture. The internet is filled with type 4 people complaining about their hair as if other textures have it so much easier. I know type 1,2,and 3 people who have complained excessively about their hair and have also chopped it off and struggled to find the right products and struggled with growth and health yet type 4’s think hair struggle is exclusively ours. It’s annoying and it perpetuates this justification of type 4 hate. I have “4C” hair and I LOVE my hair.

I’m old enough to be your mother 😊 and am very proud of you. I’ve been natural since 2004 and the gurus back then was Kimmie Tube, Nappy fu and BlackOnyx77, etc. these ladies I respected, then out of the blue everyone is natural, the community grew and the division started along with the creation of product junkies and hair dictators. I stopped watching because I couldn’t take it no more. Now close to twenty years later, I return for recipes for natural products I see it has gotten worse. Speak your truths babygirl, love your transparency. I love my nappy, kinky hair and listen to her closely and not what the top rated YTer says😊😊❤️❤️

I realized my diet played a big part in my hair growth. I was buying all these products and then I changed my diet for like a month trying to eat more fruits, vegggies and less processed food. My hair was growing and my nails were stronger. Food and water intake changed the game for me and saved a lot of money and accepting that it takes time. I barely touch my hair and protective style.

Disclaimer: I am a (30+ years) licensed Cosmetologist. Ladies, when you document your daughters hair length, use a tape measure, document the date, her height, and age. Keep a log book, so that you have written documentation along with photos in the event that you need it for legal issues. There is No need to trim hair unless there is damage. If you happen to go to a salon, first make sure that you confirm that they have a posted current Cosmetologist License for your state. During your salon visit, do not allow the stylist to turn you away from the mirror while trimming your hair. (Best to have a friend go with you.) From the consult and start of your hair service, it might be best to get a clear understanding with your stylist, and advise her/him NOT to cut or trim your hair, Nor use any trimming tools/scissors/clippers/edgers/or razors during your hair service. Some stylist want to “up sale” salon service prices or practice a hair style on you by insisting that you need your ends trimmed. Usually the trim turns into a hair cut from telling you 1/2” then they actually cut 2”-3” or more off, which is can be significant length. Hair grows an AVERAGE of 1/2” a month, 6” a year. (One half inch per month, six inches per year.) So if the hair stylist cuts 3” of hair off, it will take you 6 months to grow it back. This is why we don’t think our hair is growing, because we keep cutting off the growth progress or using tools and chemical processes that damage and cause hair breakage. And please don’t get a relaxer or color bleaching, because your hair may break off in no time. I know American society is not adapting to the notion that Black Women and Black Girls could have, or grow long hair, but we can change the narrative, take better care of our “Crown”, and grow it as long as we like. For some reason, we always feel the need to prove to strangers that “this is my real hair” by consenting to strangers touching or pulling ours or our daughters hair. I ask that you NOT CONSENT. Do not let strangers touch your hair, or your daughters hair, because you don’t know what type of “Spirits/Bad Energy” or germs they carry (including Covid-19) or other viruses on their hands or under nails. You Don’t need to prove ANYTHING to ANYONE!

Finally a cosmetologist that isn’t insane 😩. I’m not sure why so many black people obsess over cutting or trimming our hair every few weeks. I’m always asked how did my hair grow so fast and my answer is always “I don’t cut my hair 😐”. I dust off single strand knots and split ends individually, and during my second natural hair journey I have only cut 6” off over my 5.5yrs of being natural.
Lord they all have the nerve to complain about why their hair isn’t growing but they will cut you if you tell them to stop trimming so much 😂.

Lady LaTre'viette Phantumhive Every time I do my hair I look for single strands knots and splits ends and cut them out one by one. It’s extremely time consuming but it makes more sense then cutting off hair that isn’t messed up. I also found when I was trimming my hair the “regular” way I wasn’t getting all the damage so I was cutting for no reason.
@@sondrac8809 I have known about the Yao women for a very long time now. Lol I’m always so confused about why the natural hair community makes their rice water the way that they do. They will mention the Yao women and then make the rice water completely different from how they do it. But to each its own I guess 🤷🏾♀️
@@kjkggjklhkkvvj6962 it can be very time consuming that’s why I only do it while I’m relaxing watching a movie or talking with friends on the phone. I will have my hair in twist and I will do one twist at a time just feeling for any knots. Then I will quickly scan for split ends. It’s much easier that way then having all of your hair loose.
I get that people overemphasize the hair typing system and there's a lot more to taking care of your hair than just the curl pattern but I also get why people use it. it's a simple way for ppl to get an idea of your hair and how it behaves. for example, 4c hair is gonna shrink more than 3b hair so that's gonna change how someone with 4c hair styles their hair, how often they stretch it, etc

I agree with you, but the problem with the hair typing system is that they put us into categories when it is really more of a scale. I’m 4C, Chizi Duru is 4C, NaturalAcademia is 4C, KandidKinks is 4C, westafricanbaby is 4C, Tshidi Rdebe is 4C but none of their hair looks EXACTLY alike. I’ve seen similarities between my hair and their own, hence why I follow all of them but our hair is completely different. That’s why I think we should use GreenBeauty’s hair typing system, because it acknowledges the fact that we are all different. I mean, even identical twins don’t look the same, how much black people from different countries/families etc.? And, as NaturalAcademia said in the video: the chart doesn’t even include every curl pattern: people with “I” shape curls like VivsHairTherapy.
@@yourleftknee3720 that's why I said the hair typing system is just a simple way to get an idea of someone's hair and not the end all be all. ofc other things like porosity, density, and thickness are important in assessing our hair but that doesn't mean we should now completely ignore the role that curl pattern can play in how we take care and manage our hair. most people who use the hair typing system aren't really saying that because 2 ppl have the same hair type it's gonna look exactly alike. I think for the most part people understand that natural hair has nuances and it's not all black and white.
@@annoyingvegan98 I agree!! It honestly helped me on my natural hair journey cause it gave me an idea of what my hair couldn't do. From fraudulent natural youtbers, I thought my 4c hair was 3b-c. After I found my true pattern, then I started on the process of hair density and porosity, shrinkage, etc.
4:54 is literally the key 🔑 after quarantine started I stopping touching my hair as much and I noticed so much more growth. Let protective styling be your best friend 🗣🗣🗣

I agree with everything you said! I used to buy so many different products and thought I needed all that to grow my hair. Now I just make my own and use Ayurvedic remedies, which I find to be much better for my hair.
To answer your question about why the hair typing system seems so important ....so much that people get heated over it is because of 2 things:
Looser textures are still celebrated...especially for people who are over 40 like me. When I was little, people threw the "good hair" and "bad hair" labels around alot and I personally experienced being ignored when my cousins with long wavy hair and type 3 loose curls were around. I was ordinary and they were beautiful according to some. It's crazy and hilarious now because one of my cousins is my twin except for hair texture, yet I was not the cute one. I never knew my coils were beautiful until I was grown and I still struggle. I see "curl definition" as important because of the self loathing I didn't even know I carried . I still struggle with going back and forth between natural hair and texturized/texlaxed hair because of this. I am even guilty of letting people think my texlaxed hair is my natural texture because of self loathing. I am a work in progress girl. Young people like you have taught me in recent years how beautiful natural hair can be. We owe it to ourselves to keep educating ourselves to finally let go of this side effect of white supremacy.
The other reason why people get so hyped up over the typing is that those who feel they are 4C feel underrepresented just as you said. So when they see someone saying they are 4C and they spot a "curl" instead of a "zip zag" or whatever, they go in for the kill.
You hit the nail right on the head when it comes to pointing out the obsess some black people are not willing to admit to when it comes to loose curls. I personally don’t understand it and find it to be quit disgusting, because of the pain and oppression that lives on the other side of that lust. And it personally pisses me off when people say that I have “good hair” or “you got that good shit”. 😡😤. I have to constantly do a whole lot of correcting in my family, because those mofos are so ignorant 🙄.

I absolutely LOVEEEE your content!! My mother would shame my natural hair throughout my childhood, and would put relaxers in it til the point she decided to cut it all off when I was 12. I've been struggling on learning about my hair and accepting my texture (very similar to yours) up until this year. Your videos have helped me to be able to understand to just leave my hair alone in twists/braids with minimal product and my hair been flourishing ever since!! 100%! I had a cabinet full of oils, leave in conditioners, jellys, etc. I had barely any growth and everyone kept making it my fault telling me to go to the doctors 🙄. The day I put a FACE MASK in my hair and was considering putting gross "rice water" in, i gave up. I went back to my "whatever is in the cabinet" shampoo and conditioner, Blue magic (YES BLUE MAGIC) on my scalp, and Sta.Soft.fro spray that I used as a kid. I braid it up and wear a wrap or rock my fro. My hair grew like crazy. That works for me!

I came here for the blue magic comments. There's truth to it! I remember the little girls at my church when I was little that I called the grease and water babies. Nothing else. Hair was thick and healthy until they introduced perms
My hair is 4c and my cousin has 3b hair. Every time we see each other she tells me how much she wishes her hair was like mine. If you don’t have “that” texture you don’t know what it’s like to have it. Too many people think they know everything there is to know about other people’s hair. That aspect of the “community” has always annoyed me. This idea that wavy, curly or even straight hair doesn’t count as natural, although it literally grows out of the scalp that way, is ignorant and backwards. The jealousy is unhealthy. I believe once we all accept our own hair the way it grows out of our scalp, many problems within the “community” would be resolved.

The reason we say "natural hair community" to refer to Black people is because we differentiate between chemically processed hair and natural hair in the Black community. White people and other races do not do that with each other. They don't have to. They generally wear their own hair or hair texture (yes they wear wigs and extensions too we know).
A White person saying "my natural hair" would sound weird. They just say "my hair".
Biggest scams:
Protective styles: Are people aware how much the wig and hair market is worth in the US? It is in alot of people's interests, often not black, for you to keep on buying other people's hair, which is nothing like your own.Some people have been convinced that they need to put away their hair because it is so fragile... I have travelled the world. Ive never met anybody who will glue or sew artificial hair, hair that doesn't look anything like their own. In extreme temps, people wear a scarf or a hat. If you are lazy, you like the style, or going on holiday, fine! But protective styles are the biggest cause of hair damage!
Natural black hair is more often curly and coily. I understand the history.But wearing straight Eur:opean hair has taught people that was your real hair, now you wondering why there is a backlash? Most people and companies really don't care!
Its very important that now we have the information, that we stop relaxing childrens hair at the age of 3!There really is no excuse unless their Guardians are lazy!

Some black Americans like to think that they are the originators and gatekeepers of natural black hair and the natural black community. Most black people around the world have always been natural. Just remember when you want to shout cultural appropiation where the use of rice water,castor oil, fenugreek and other Ayurvedic substances come from.
Im just asking you to stop and think. Why do alot of white men prefer black natural hair on women than alot of black men? We need to take some responsibility and take back....including the money made from our hair!!!

I’m into protective styling but I use my own hair and it is THRIVING!! Unlike most naturals, I truly don’t care about the length of my hair..... I prefer shorter hair anyway, the ONLY reason why I’m not cutting my hair is because of my spirituality. So, I don’t mind doing PS without any added hair.

Folks focus on what they don’t have and hate what is on their head. Almost everyone who is frustrated with their hair growth do too much. Too much manipulation, too much heat, too much gel, to much product.
I used to pay someone to conrow my daughter’s hair when she was little. I used to blow dry it so the hair dresser could have an “easier “ time. I had to give my daughter Tylenol so she could sleep after the tight tension. I noticed that her hair was thinning around the edges.
My daughter begged me to stop putting her hair in cornrows. I did a simple two strand twist and left her hair alone. Her hair grew all the way back and then some.

I love natural hair youtubers like you, very honest and speaking on the bs the natural community does. I've been natural all my life but I started actually taking of it by myself when I was 14, I'll admit it, when I started watching youtube vids about natural hair, I thought whatever I saw is what you're supposed to do and I wasted so much time and money doing things I didn't need to do and just manipulating my hair way too much. I'm 19 now, and my routine is so simple now and I use products that work for my hair and keep using them. My hair use to touch the upper cheek and now its passing my chin and it's the healthiest it's ever been in my life.

No matter how many products I try (I’ve tried a lot) I ALWAYS go back to my OGs. WATER, sheamoisture curl enhancing smoothie, olive oil and eco styling gel. That’s all I use now. If I feel fancy I’ll use Wild growth oil or Jamaican black castor oil on my scalp.

I don't like the way that they make it seem that we need magical hair products and hair treatments to make our hair grow. Just like Chrissie (a TH-camr) said black women rather believe in some fake product that will grow their hair 10 inches over night then in a realistic routine and length retention!

Girl I’m no professional but I love learning about my hair. I don’t buy all of those products cause I’m afraid that it won’t work on my hair. I stick to what works ! Most people that are natural are going back to relaxed cause Th e natural hair community are so demanding and rude! They want you to spend all of your money on brands that come in an 8oz bottle for $20. I rather buy things on a budget and they work! They use gel and hate grease but doesn’t gel cause a lot of buildup? I love my grease it’s what works!

I would also add that if people with type 4 hair find their hair unmanageable because they are trying to accomplish looks worn by those with looser textures, it's not just that their hair "can't do" those things; the products and techniques were never designed to work the same on their hair in the first place. Not to mention the multitude of factors that go in to how hair will respond to products and manipulation.
The young lady who posted the very first natural hair video in 2006 is no where on the natural hair youtube scene anymore because of the hateful comments she received. In some cases her life was even threatend. She shared so much helpful information, from the history of our hair, including the original styles worn by our ancestors, ingredients that were harmful and damaging to our hair and scalp and so much more. Were it not for her we may not have the ability to care for our hair as much as we do now. The hate that comes from our own is sad and shows a real 'crabs in a barrel' mentality. If you don't agree with the content of another person, simply move on, but don't bash others because what works for them may not work for you. Or KINDLY offer your view point without being hostile and hateful about it.
Sadly the ingredients for making truly natural products is very expensive. But with patience and research you can make your own.

Personally as a 4c hair individual it is important that i see 4c representation, yes i agree with you it shouldn't matter when it comes to taking care of your natural hair. but it does when you want to style your hair. My sister wanted to do this style and expected it to come out like the girl in the video and it didn't she was disappointed (fyi the girl had looser texture)

Honestly I stopped watching a lot of natural hair TH-camrs. It’s always about products and selling something. Plus I never had this many hair and scalp issues UNTIL I started trying to be “natural.” I started going back to what my granny use to do because at least back then my scalp was healthy.
Maximum hydration method, Rice Water, Chebe powder, Chebe tea. What is next? 🤔Chebe vitamins? 😭😂. All of these will come and go.

You have truly given a master class up in here this evenin'!! The hair typing chart is a form of bondage because it has done more harm than good. If you're Type 4, and I am, you know it. This is the key: embrace yourself and your hair with all it's kinks and coils with pride.
I get tired of hearing "my curls are poppin" because you just put a pound of gel on your hair and your hair might be dry some time in the next 36 hours. Totally not worth the time and energy.
I first went natural in 2009. Since that time I've gone back into a relaxer four times. In March 2019 I said "That's it. No more chemicals. I'm embracing what's coming out of my scalp and I will be natural for life."
The reason why I kept going back and forth for a decade is because I wouldn't find out what my hair liked as far as a regimen and stick with it. No. I was too busy mixing up potions with herbs and berries that somebody I was subbed to said would make my hair ankle length in no time, which is a lie, irrational, and a bunch of foolishness. So of course I was miserable and would give up.
There is no magic potion except patience, realistic goals, lots of TLC, and remember that low manipulation = length retention. And ladies, wash day should never become wash weekend.
People need to get off the bandwagon to product junkieland, build a regimen that is simple but effective, and enjoy their hair journey 💜
Hello girl facts!!! I cannot stand when anyone and I mean anyone tries to tell me what I need to do or how I should wear hair that grows out of my scalp as if it is their own. I swear it doesn't matter if your relaxed, pressed, or natural. Somebody always gotta make a comment on what doesnt grow out of their scalp. I try to not let it get to me but I be like girl it's my hair on my head. Mind your business and grow yours or don't just leave me alone. Alot of women that choose to just wear their hair don't do it for attention. We just want to wear our hair, keep it healthy, and mind our business.

Some people ask me how I grew my hair out and how I do it, so ofc I post a video about it and I get comments like “she’s mixed don’t listen to her” “nothing helped her hair grow, she has type 3 hair.” “You have an easier hair texture, the natural hair movement isn’t for you”
I was so happy to share my journey and people really didn’t like it lol it made me really take a step back from the community.
Dont listen to them and dont stop teaching. There is someone out there similiar or different to/than you that could use your knowledge.

The hate for type 3 curlies is out of control. The comments can get really ugly. I went natural back in 2007 before TH-cam and before we had so many options for natural hair products. It's been 15 years since I cut off my relaxer and now here recently, I'm being told that the natural hair movement wasn't for me because I don't have 4c hair. That's news to me because I really thought I was a part of something really special 😅.

I personally like the hair type system. The general "type 1,2,3,4" is too broad for someone to find content on hair similar to theirs. The sub categories "a,b,c" help people like me find people who have hair that look close to exactly like mine. It's great for learning the behavior of your specific pattern and what to and not to expect. Type 4a hair wash and gos come out waaaay different than type 4c hair. Though its in the same category, the extra specifications of the chart help people filter out what content will effectively apply to them as well as recieving realistic results and diluting their high expectations according to where they fall on the hair chart.
I actually have multiple of curl patterns in my head....as so with alot of people. So I never based my hair choices on that system because I refuse to go that length. Yet my hair has still flourished...even without being mindful of my hair's density and not being aware of it's porosity. A big part of me would like to contribute a small percentage to watching women and even men who has obviously different hair textures than my own. I figured I can learn something(negative or/and positive) from anyone and apply it to my own journey.

People who say natural hair is too difficult are making it difficult.
First, you the most realest on YT rn like for real! Your channel is what the natural hair videos used to be. I think somehow along the way, say circa 2013? The natural hair community on YT completely changed. What it was originally about just went under, especially with the way the platform of YT was changing from the old to the new, what we have now. It wasn’t about just creating anymore, it became all glitz and glamour and don’t get me wrong, get ur coin! Buttt it sucks that the authenticity and rawness kinda faded away. Also, the face of the natural hair movement on YT changed from girls with fros, and kinky hair, to just naturals with either a) long natural hair, b) type 3 hair and above. It’s really exhausting and it’s almost like we moved backward? And then, there’s no unity, so many naturals think it’s only 1 way to be natural and everything else is wrong. Not to mention, we as a people have not embraced type 4, KINKY hair. There is still SO much work to be done, and so much unlearning to do. We damn near need a movement part 2: like to some back to our roots type shit. I’m talking classes, research the whole nine on COILS AND KINKS! Cause I believe a lot of people don’t understand their type 4 hair truly. Then, hairstylist(our own people) still wanna make it seem like type 4 hair is difficult and unmanageable. So much to unpack, it makes me sad and feels defeated at times no matter how many videos I watch. I hope in the future we as a people we can come to a point to fully accept our natural hair for what it is fully.

When I moved to locs, one of the most freeing things was giving away the natural hair products that I had. I wasn’t too deep in the product junkie state, but I definitely had a lil collection going. When you’re just wanting to do the best for your hair, it’s so easy to get confused with all the “advice” until you realize that porosity and density answer SO many of the questions. Even with locs it’s annoying to constantly hear so many “do’s & don’ts”. I just have to do me.
The issues in the natural hair community are based in a lot of internalized issues of self-hatred and denial. You are right in how we can’t expect outward acceptance when we can’t even accept that we all don’t have loose curls. You have folks watching tutorials on looser textures getting frustrated cuz that’s not how their hair is...girl...be honest with that mirror.
I think you may be approaching this from just as judgmental a position as the folks you’re critiquing. Specifically, I’m referring to your discussion about “why are y’all touching your hair so much and tryna make your hair do xyz.” You’re so fortunate to have never had chemical in your hair. Most of us don’t share that experience. We go straight from relaxed, in a world that’s still hostile to black hair (and black people) and maybe we want to ease in. Maybe we don’t want to go from Stacey Dash to Angela Davis in one day. Maybe we still want hang time bc that’s how we feel pretty. I really think that’s okay. I agree with you 100% that some of us are chasing a dream. But at the end of the day we’re all just black folks tryna feel comfortable in our skin. Just a thought. I kind of agree. Everyones journey is different. What works for some may not work for others. Whether that’s stretching your hair or leaving it in it’s natural state. You don’t know peoples hair or state of mind so you just can’t assume ya know. But at the same time I agree with a lot of the other things she said. Especially with the top gurus and products. Or the bullying.

I do agree in the grand scheme of things curl pattern doesn't matter when it comes to hair growth and length retention as much as porosity, coarseness, and density. However, I still believe curl patterns play a role when it comes to detangling and styling because obviously if you have 3c hair, your hair isn't going to be as hard to detangle as someone with 4c hair because the diameter of their coils is smaller, leading to a higher chance of single strand knots and matting. Btw this is coming from someone who has a curl pattern range of 3b-4b. And for styling, someone who has a looser curl pattern is going to be able to manipulate their hair less compared to someone with a tighter curl pattern. For example, person A and person B are both doing twist outs with person A having about 8 in of hair and a 4b curl pattern and person B having 8 in as well with a 3b curl pattern. The person with 4b hair is going to have to stretch their hair more and manipulate it more to get the proper volume and elongation.
I also agree with what you said about people with type 4 hair downplaying the experiences of people with type 3 hair because, in reality, your density, length, and coarseness play a large role in the manageability of your hair. For example someone with short low density 4c hair is going to be finished doing their hair much faster than someone who has long high density 3a hair because they have less hair strands on their hair to work with.

I reeeaaallly agree with your comment about the definition thing. I never understood it or never saw the appeal to it personally. Why must I try to constantly change my natural curl pattern with some substances that don't even do my hair good and causes it to be brittle and hard? And some people really do that EVERYDAY or whenever they where their hair out. I think it stems from them not liking their natural hair texture like you said. And my hair has grown immensely and I don’t even know a lot about hair care. Yet it seems folks in the natural hair community always like “no, use this, don’t do that” blah blah blah

I get what your saying. All these products and methods introduced is just too much. I remember as a child my mother did none of these things and my sisters and my hair was healthy. I am over with the whole natural community. Back to basic for me.
Honestly, I think these “why I hate the natural hair community” videos are very toxic. I’ve learned a lot from TH-camrs like Naptural85, Green Beauty and others. I like the variety of products and I don’t think they’re expensive. Salon quality products cost so much more yet I never see anyone complaining about the price of Aveda or Kerastase. Also, we don’t all have the same hair type. Some of us have hair that is defined naturally, as long as it’s moisturized and find wash n go’s the be the simplest and best hairstyle for us. We don’t all wash our hair infrequently and keep it in protective styles all the time. The beauty of us as a people and us as individuals is that we are very diverse and have many options. Do what works for you and keep it moving. We, as Black women have come a long way with our hair. Let’s celebrate the positive. All of this complaining and negativity is just counterproductive and ridiculous.

When I was transitioning I used cheap products and I swear they NEVER worked. Which led me to believe that the more expensive products would help me manage my hair better. After about 3 years I realized that yes while some products are better and may cost a little more it was really just me not knowing what I was doing. Now all I use is a water based leave-in, a thick oil, and gel (works perfect for my hair and helps combat the dryness). This simple routine every time I wash my hair holds me over until the next wash day. And I save lots of money! It’s all about figuring out what works for your hair even if you do share the same texture as another, the same routine won’t necessarily work. Great vid, this helped me see another perspective that I didnt think about before

Ever since I started watching your channel I stopped doing so much to my hair. I remember leaving my hair alone when I was younger and it use to FLOURISHED. As a girl with type 4 hair, I use to dream of loose curled wash n go. I don’t think like that anymore and I hope that everyone gets to this point too.

This is true! You don’t need a lot of extra products. My hair maintained length the most when I left it alone especially during quarantine. I washed my hair with one shampoo and conditioner used like on other product and my hair thrived 🤷♀️
And I agree it’s too much to try to keep up with keeping hair defined. My hair is in the 3 range and I have started to feel like I don’t feel like defining my hair I want to just let it be. My hair is naturally frizzy and why not just let it be frizzy and be how it is without all the products. I really feel you on this one.

I will admit I fell into the hair type trap. I went back to doing my hair like my grandma did when I was a kid. Wash, leave-in, grease and braid it up. I do my hair about every 2weeks. Scarves and wigs are the move for me right now.

I feel you! I’ve been natural since 2011. It’s been 9 years and I have just figured out how to properly take care of MY hair that in a way that works best for ME, last year. I use to blindly follow natural hair YTers and my hair was doing ok but I wasn’t getting the length retention that I was looking for (nor was my hair properly moisturized but I didn’t know that at the time). I did see positive major changes when I finally started twisting and braiding it up and leaving it the hell alone. But leaving your hair in braids and twists (without extensions) or wearing your hair in an undefined fro is not deemed as beautiful in our community. Even though those low manipulation styles are exactly what our hair needs. These big YTers, I believe, are not interested in teaching people about how to properly moisturize and grow natural hair in a realistic way. It’s about content, sponsorships, and coins. It’s so detrimental to us as Black women because our hair is so important to us. It’s a large part of our identity and culture.

I agree with you completely. Everyone has their own kind of hair, own texture, own type. Love it how it is! I feel like we're all concerning ourselves with things that don't really matter, we should accept and love our hair in the NATURAL STATE IT IS AND IS MENT TO BE, that way you'll really be happy. YES!! I am tired of seeing scammy “hair growth oil” ads that Instagrammers push. A special oil can’t “grow” your hair, the blatant use of gimmicks has made me sad and suspicious.
