They have a very large playlist of covers and Original songs

Mayday(DON’T WATCH TILL YOU ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE GROUP AND THEIR RANGES )
There's not a song that you pick from their 300+ catalog that is bad I haven't found one yet.

Home Free is a phenomenal a cappella group. Like Pentatonix they won their season of NBC's "The Sing Off". Home Free is also extraordinarily versatile. For something fun and up tempo see their cover of "Can't Stop the Feeling", some R&B their cover of Boyz II Men's "End of the Road", something deep their cover of John Mayer's "In the Blood", something hilarious their "Butts Remix" and for stunning harmonies amid a spectacular setting their rendition of "How Great Thou Art". Finally with Christmas season don't miss out on their Christmas creations. You really can't go wrong with anything Home Free does.

HF is a VERY deep rabbit hole. There's only one mistake you can make with this wonderful group -- listening to their cover of "Mayday" too soon. You don't get maximum enjoyment from this great performance until you know all the guys and their voices. For most reactors, that's at least 6 reactions to other HF performances. It's also an excellent idea to listen to country vocalist Cam perform the original -- th-cam.com/video/eRrCMEXPjWo/w-d-xo.html Amazingly, all-male HF performs "Mayday" in the same key as Cam -- a female vocalist!

@@lncmason There's no magic number -- what IS important is knowing all of their voices. The two tenors are easy. Austin and Rob usually get solo parts. The lower voices (Tim and Chance) don't get as many solos, so you have to pick the right songs to get comfortable with their bass and baritone/bass voices. Probably the best showcase of HF's deep voices is "Brothers in Arms" -- th-cam.com/video/_ChD2WjD2tY/w-d-xo.html

Home Free is the real deal. They are incredibly talented men. Yes, the beatboxer was doing drums, harmonica and other sounds while Chance (back left) was doing the “mouth harp” sound that sounds like a didgeridoo. The beatboxer can also do a didgeridoo too! Tim, the bass, has a 5 octave range so he can sing super low and then sing up with the tenors. They all have beautiful voices. They sing covers but also write and sing their own songs. Austin (lead here) just wrote one called Playing with Fire that’s great. Chance just wrote Skull and Bones for a pirate game. All super talented. Good reaction Mandy!😍

Buckle your seatbelt and get ready for a fantastic ride if you choose to go down the Home Free rabbit hole! They have a plethora of music for you to be wowed by. They are generally a country band, but will not hesitate to dive into any genre. They do tons of covers but have as many of their own music as well. The only advice i give is get to know them and their normal place in the band before you listen to Mayday. You will not be disappointed in these guys. It has been said that they don't do covers of songs, they do "upgrades". Listen and the Home Fries will flock to your channel!

When you say rabbit hole you're really not lying. I found out about Home Free from someone reacting to this song (which the original is amazing and so is O Brother, Where Art Thou as a movie) and since then I've listened to so many of their covers and original songs.

  • @rcinsley
    @rcinsley ปีที่แล้ว +114

The beat boxer (Adam Rupp) provided the drum kit and "no-monica." Adam is the last remaining founding member of the group. That twangy sound at beginning and end was Adam Chance (they call him "Chance" to avoid confusion), and it's a simulation of a "jew's harp" (aka: jaw harp, mouth harp, etc.), not a didgeridoo. Chance didn't get a solo in this performance, but you'll enjoy his rich baritone/bass voice in many other videos. HF's bass, Tim Foust, has been known to break things with his voice. Speaker cones are no match for Tim...and once...he caused part of the ceiling to crash down onto the stage where HF was performing! Austin Brown was the first tenor you heard. His voice is a bit higher than their other full-time tenor, Rob Lundquist. Both of them are extremely talented!

Actually there is a diggery doo as well, as you can see in Adam's Drum Solo, where he says "deep in the Southern Outback" The diggery doo is in the opening sequence with the alligator. I'm not sure what beatboxing Chance does, but it is certain that he does quite a bit.

Intro to HF: Group was formed in 2000 by baritone Chris and beatboxer Adam Rupp (Check out "Adam Rupp Drum Solo" if you thought this song was spectacular). Tenor Rob Lundquist (glasses) introduced himself to HF in 2008, and was invited to join the group not much later. Tim Foust and his five-octave range have been holding down the bass slot since 2012. Later that year, the group met tenor Austin Brown on a cruise. He cam aboard early in 2013. Founder Chris Rupp was replaced by Adam "Chance" in 2016. All four can sing tenor, all four can sing bass, all four have sung the lead, and all five can beatbox.

They all can take the lead depending on whos voice is best for the song. They are known for their tight harmonies. Tim Foust is one of the best bass singers out there with a 5 octave range & their beatboxer vocal percussionist Adam Rupp can simulate any sound. This song is very old & is done in the bluegrass country style. It was used in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney.

Since you recently discovered Pentatonix, I would suggest Ring of Fire (actually a June Carter Cash song made famous by Johnny Cash) in which they collaborate with Pentatonix's original bass Avi Kaplan. There is also a version they did for The Sing-Off which is also very good and is performed a half-step lower but the sound quality of the recording is not as good. For more 'drum kit' wows, try Listen to the Music, Do You Hear What I Hear, Mayday, Mary Did You Know, American Pie (with Don McLean) and well, almost anything. For amazing five-part harmonies, try How Great Thou Art, Helplessly Hoping, In the Blood, and Brothers at Arms (very bassy). For silliness - without loss of singing quality - try All About the Bass, Butts Remix, Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, Make You Feel My Love, and others. We'll have other suggestions - opera, gospel, r&b, rock, doo-wop, Broadway tunes, and more - as you explore.

Great reaction Maddy! Love to see reactors respond to Home Free's amazing talents. I found them right at the beginning of Covid and this was the first song I listened to by them. Since then, I have listened to them every day and I've been blessed to see them live twice. I've actually run out of words to describe their talent! I hope you will continue to react to them. Home Fries will flock to your channel. If nothing else, we are loyal fans. Everything they do is amazing!

So glad you have found these guys. They are my fav a capella group. If you love amazing harmonies you really need to hear their cover of the Crosby, Stills and Nash classic, Endlessly Hoping. It amazingly beautiful with all 5 singing. Also, their cover of When A Man Loves A Woman is top notch. Hugs. Mark

That look of utter bewilderment and glee when someone experiences Home Free for the first time.... 😂
Welcome to the world of my favorite acapella group!! They started here in my state of Minnesota, and they are beyond amazing!! Although they definitely have a country flavor, they cover all genres. Here are the guys:
    * Rob Lundquist (front left) / Smooooth tenor vocals, an insane whistler, and a constant source of humor. A native Minnesotan!
    * Austin Brown (center) / High soaring tenor vocals and a stellar yodeler.
    * Tim Foust (front right) / Deep bass vocals that come from the mines of Moria, and a roughly five octave range. He can go much lower than what you heard here.
    * Adam Chance (back left) / Beautiful baritone vocals who covers the bass when Tim takes the lead. He does the jaw harp in this song. Goes by Chance to avoid confusion with....
    * Adam Rupp (back right) / The walking percussion machine. He's done drums, harmonica, castanets, hip hop beatboxing, and so much more. Pretty sure he's not human. Another native Minnesotan!
    * Chris Rupp / Helped found the group with his brother Adam and others. He left the group some years ago and was replaced by Adam Chance. You'll see him in their older videos, almost always wearing a cowboy hat.
Everything they do is top tier, and here are some suggestions for where to go next:
"How Great Thou Art" and "Helplessly Hoping" (sheer vocal perfection)
"Ring of Fire," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Brothers in Arms" (for more of Tim's insane low notes)
"All About That Bass" and "The Butts Medley" (to see their hilarious side)
"Do You Hear What I Hear?" (my favorite Home Free song)
Amazing reaction!! Welcome to the Home Fries! Have fun going down the rabbit hole!

Having seen a few comments attributing this song to different artists and movies, etc., gotta add my two cents.
This is an old American Folk Song that possibly originated in the 19th century in and around Kentucky and Tennessee - possibly earlier. The original author(s) is unknown as most folk songs are and there have been many variations over time.

Maddy Home Free has so many great covers but I'd recomend at least four that are very good and/or very emotional. "Go rest high on that mountain" is so very moving I've heard many times now and it still brings a tear. Another is "In the Blood" just as moving as Go rest high. Their Cover of "Mayday" might be a better performance than "Man of constant sorrow" just a stunning piece of vocal art that would be hard to beat. Another very moning and very spiritial cover is "How great thou art".

The guy in the orange hat, Adam Chance does the jaw harp or juice harp sound. He also does other instrument sounds. He was the bass for his previous vocal group. Check out their cover of Can't Stop the Feeling for an instrumental section. The guy who does the harmonica imitation, Adam Rupp, is also the walking drum kit. Check out their cover of Listen to the Music for more beatboxing.

If you come back to this, Adam Rupp (the beatboxer) says he does the harmonica from his throat. Between Beaumont Tx, and Louisana. The basssist name is Tim Faust.

That digeridoo sound is polyphonic overtone singing. One of them can do that technique where you sing 2 notes at once...One is vocal chord production, and the other comes from a resonance like whistle made at the back of the throat with the tongue.

That beginning sound is called a jews harp (also juice/jaw/mouth harp), NOT a didgeridoo. You want to hear Home Free do that instrument check out any of their live Home Free Drum Solo videos. the first one (and the one most likely to come up on the search) is from 2015, with Adam in the red flannel shirt. The later ones, from 2021-2022 show how much he has improved and expanded his sound repertoire. I also recommend their two versions (one with Chris and one with Chance) of 9 to 5 + Beatboxing Breakdown. (But you might want to watch their video for 9 to 5 first.) All of them get their beatboxing time in the spotlight.

This will be fun. 🙂 So, Maddy, have you seen the movie "O, Brother Where Art Thou?" It's a funny, quirky, depression era, deeo south, prison break story that is inspired by Homer's tale The Odyssey. The main character, a prisoner named Ulysses, is trying to get home to his family and has many adventures along the way. The film is very funny, and it has a wonderful soundtrack filled with lots of "old timey" songs like "Man Of Constant Sorrow." If you've never seen it, you should add it to your list and check it out sometime. Good stuff! 😄

Try The Butts medley to see them having fun. Adam the beat boxer often does a full solo drum recital in stage performances their is a video on TH-cam of it.
