    This also works with the TR-8S via USB. First, add the TR-8S as an aggregate device using the Audio Midi Setup tool in MacOS. Windows users will need to download the ASIO4ALL driver to create the aggregate device. Follow all of Ed's instructions until you reach the external instrument setup. Set midi output to TR-8S and midi channel to 10. Assign each pad sequentially starting with channel 5 and ending on channel 15. Volume, tune, decay, and ctrl controls work for each track.
    Ensure that you have Ableton's midi output control for the device set to track and sync, and ensure that the TRACK AND SYNC BUTTONS FOR MIDI IN are disabled, otherwise, your TR-8S will glitch out and crash (especially if you're manipulating the onboard controls).
    Same rules apply from Ed's video. Do not use the onboard sequencer.
    Thanks for your guidance on this, Ed. It's exactly what I needed to get started.

    Cool, I do the same thing with the TR-8S! I overcomplicated my setup a bit by looping the TR-8S MIDI through Live and turning off local control. This allowed me to do some stuff where I can sequence on either the Push or the TR-8S depending on my mood, and also record knob movements as automation. (The annoying bit is that I need a secondary "hardware" track permanently set to Monitor In, dedicated to keeping the TR-8S inputs flowing even when the Push is "attached" to a different device. Otherwise the MIDI CC doesn't flow. Oh, and I also had to do some wacky stuff to make sure that the notes coming out of the TR got changed to the notes of my drum rack, since I use the xpresspads-style symmetric note layout for finger drumming. All in all though, they both work really well together, and I love not having to pick out drum samples!

    Thanks Ed for this. I recently discovered your channel, and you have been a huge help. How would I use this for sidechaining? I make my sub bass using the model D, but I don't see a way to side chain the model D to just the bass drum. It wants to side chain to all of the TR8-s audio. Any way to separate out the individual audio? Hope this question makes sense. BTW, Equanimity is beautiful.

    • @mredrollo
      @mredrollo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! You could try side-chaining with an EQ filter to only react to the low end. It it’s not a great solution. This set up is limited as yeah, everything comes through one channel. Or you could set up a dummy clip with the same kick drum pattern to side chain. Depends how “in the moment” you want to be with the sequencer. For me my kick is 4 to the floor so it’s an easy fix. Hope that helps!

    This is super helpful - I'm trying to find out if you can program the tr8 to start and stop with either CC or midi from Ableton 11 -- do you know if this is possible? (ie. I'm running tracks for live, and want the TR8 sequence to not only clock with the tempo in ableton, but would like for it to start playing the sequence when a scene is launched, and stop when specified as well)

    • @mredrollo

      I believe that once the Tr-8 is running. It’s running! It clocks to global start and stop. So unless you are starting and stopping Live the Tr-8 will just keep running. This is why I chose to ignore the inbuilt tr-8 sequencer and just program MIDi clips. This way I have full control over what plays and when.

      I tried it with my TR-8s directly connected to the PC via USB MIDI, it works pretty much the same way. All you need to do is in the Ext. Instrument "MIDI To", rather than select your audio interface select the TR-8S. As a sidenote, because this drove me nuts for about an hour: In the Drum Rack chains make sure you can see both Receive Note and Play Note - for some strange reason, my Play Note was 2 octaves higher than the Receive Note, so not C1 but C3, and hence the BD on the TR-8s wasn't triggered. I've set it to C1 and voila! :)

    Hello! Thanks for the release! A very useful thing. But I had a problem. I have TR-8, Ableton Live 10, Push 2 and Scarlett 18i8 (1st generation). I downloaded your "tr-8 drum rack" and followed the instructions in this video, but since I'm new to Ableton Live and don't know much English, I might be missing something. The fact is that when I press the Start button on Push, the TR-8 does not start. Also effects (Deley, Reverb, Scutter) do not work on TR-8. Encoders: tune, decay, comp, snappy and attak are working properly. Can you help me figure it out?

Another interesting point: if I press "Start" on TR-8 (it starts the pattern), and then press "Play" on Push 2 twice in a row, then TR-8 stops. Maybe the problem is in the settings of the TR-8 and Push 2 themselves, or in their firmware?

      Hey man. Thanks for checking the video out. There are a few things different about our set ups and this can easily be done with Live 9 also. The biggest thing that will help you out is take that USB cable and throw it away, and never look back. Grab yourself a 5 Pin MiDI cable exactly how I show in my video. I can’t stress this enough.
