    The cat numbering thing could have been hexadecimal, in that case the numbering would have gone 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 10, 11, 12, 13 etc. meaning 13 could have been part of the same numbering scheme

    • @ayoraster2970
      @ayoraster2970 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      there would have to be a lot of cats though, i think it's more likely they changed the numbering system partway through making them, although maybe they started work on lots of cats and then cut them idk

    • @elio7610
      @elio7610 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It does seem like the numbering system changed, since Cat13 would fit perfectly right after the others as CatD.

    • @elio7610

      Otherwise there should be 6 more unused cat villagers.

    • @Chubby_Bub
      @Chubby_Bub ปีที่แล้ว +21

      You're correct. The game files variably use decimal and hexadecimal to number villagers. In the file listing general villager data, it uses hex, but the texture folders use decimal. The only remaining data for the villager is the textures (sadly no name or anything), which is why CAT13 was called that upon her discovery. CAT13=CATD and was replaced by Ankha.
      Also of note, there is absolutely _nothing_ in the final game or source code for BEA3, so some bear villager got totally wiped from existence.

    With the dialogue where you're told you can't build by the beach, it's likely this is crash prevention. They knew people would eventually glitch their way down there so they put in the text so it doesn't softlock. There's a lot of examples of this in games, where there's a placeholder or other effect just so that nothing breaks.

    • @IkesDaddelbox

      Normally the front is standard. The middle is the bass, the top is the snare. i'm sure a billion people are going to mention this (if they haven't already) but the extra music in the intro was possible for the (very similar to 64) gamecube version as well. And you didn't have to bonk around with cartridge tipping obviously - you just had to open the disc cover at the right time. I think probably most folks obsessed with GC animal crossing at the time probably knew about this and maybe weren't surprised you could pull it off on the n64 version.

    Those untextured geometric objects at 13:18 are likely just leftovers from modeling. New Leaf uses the normal mapping that a lot of early 3DS games use [seen best on the environments in Ocarina 3D and Star Fox 64 3D] so it's likely that all in-house development for 3DS games was done using the same new program. And it seems the modelers or file system managers for New Leaf just left in models of some of the basic shapes used to model, as 3D modeling is essentially just taking basic shapes like that and manipulating the crap out of them until they look like what you're trying to make.

    For what it's worth, the Shizue/Isabelle thing with bumping into her causing a jingle sound is
    1) because of the literal bells tied to her hair-tie
    2) accessible through normal gameplay, during Holiday events where Shizue/Isabelle steps out of the Resident Services office.
    3) also plays any time her head moves sharply.

  • @DaWrecka
    @DaWrecka ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Isabelle making a bell sound when you push her _might_ be a reference to her name... Or it may be connected to how she has bells in her... hair? Is that the right word here? Well, she has bells in her hair anyway. If you listen closely, you can actually hear them tinkling when she moves at all, such as when she gets off her chair and walks over to the counter.
    I'd speculate that she just has some sort of code associated with her that creates a tinkling sound when she moves. Pushing her is technically moving her, so you get the tinkling sound.

  • @kaylaa2204
    @kaylaa2204 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    So my guess as to why that dialogue is in the English is that it’s more to do with a communication problem
    Someone was asked to translate all text that’s in the code and then send it to someone else on the localization team
    This person simply translated everything and was told to do nothing else. The next person went “well this shouldn’t be used at all since this is about Japanese” and simply took out the script that calls that dialogue without actually getting rid of the text it’s referencing
    I’ve done stuff like that before in stuff I’ve written where there’s just remnants of stuff I previously removed.
    I do find it interesting there was a time in gaming where hiragana vs kanji was an option though. There was a time where hiragana was all you saw in games because technical limitations on old systems meant kanji couldn’t be done. Hiragana by itself is somewhat awkward to read though so they added spaces where normally there would be none. I always assumed when Kanji was possible that’s all they did because it makes sense to use it. That tells me there was desire by some players to have their game text only in Hiragana. I wonder why people might have preferred that.

    • @FizzyChalice
      @FizzyChalice ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’m assuming it might be for young children who wouldn’t know enough kanji to play the game. Maybe furigana was too hard to implement?

    • @moca_moca
      @moca_moca ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard kanji is hard to read, maybe it's like reading cursive in english?

    • @kaylaa2204
      @kaylaa2204 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@moca_moca it’s kinda like… when you’re learning you run into this a lot where you don’t know what something says because it’s in kanji but then you find out what it is and you know the word, you just didn’t know it could be written that way.
      I guess kinda like cursive if you have trouble reading that.
      But there’s also this weird thing where some kanji has multiple pronunciations, so you might actually read it wrong for the context it’s in. Like there’s this phenomenon of people reading each others names wrong because they just think it’s a different reading than the one the person actually uses.
      And there’s alot of kanji so even a native speaker will really only know common ones, plus a few they see often. Novels might have furigana which is like a pronunciation guide in the margins, for kanji which readers might not be familiar with or otherwise needs specified like names.

    Animal crossing will always hold a special place in my heart for being a game I bought genuinely off of a Hollywood video ages ago. I remember renting it out and falling in love with the game. Having had leukemia and going through radiation therapy as a 10 year old and going through almost a year of living in clean space environment this game was a god send having stumbled on it before the brunt of the treatment and isolation happened. It was special having a way to live another life while having my real life be on pause for a while.

    I actually have the forbidden 4 NES games in my main town on the GameCube version. I used a cheat disk that was called "Ultimate Codes. I don't know where I got it, but it was apparently made by the same people who made Action Replay according to the box. There were a few other codes on that disk, such as infinite bells, a complete museum, a 100% catalogue, and one where it let you disable Resetti. Is there anyone else out there that remember this thing?

    • @cranberrykittycat5284
      @cranberrykittycat5284 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've gotten those four NES games by using the Action Replay. It also lets you do things like have a full Nook catalog and you can buy things in the catalog that are normally listed as "Not for sale." You can even get the Mario decoration set, which is really cool and gives you high points with the Happy Room Academy.

    Cat13 absolutely makes sense to me. The letters just mean they switched to base 16, hexadecimal. So after catF you get cat10, up to cat1F, and so on. Of course, having only twelve cats, later fourteen, means you never get to number 19, which is 13 in base 16.
