Session 9 was ahead of its time in creating a whole new type of atmospheric horror. It was one of the first films to be shot on digital video, thus there was no need for heavy lighting. The actors could perform in the dark corners of the asylum, giving it a realistic and dreadful atmosphere. The cast was first rate, and the director made a good decision to focus the story on a blue-collar work crew, instead of the typical teenagers looking for fun.
Been a huge fan of this film since the original dvd release (still got mine). One of the most impressive things about the production is how they achieved such an eerie atmosphere with the majority of this film being shot during the day. Great movie!

I remember going to my local Blockbuster and renting this movie solely because the cover of the dvd looked creepy having no idea what the movie was about. I was amazed on how good it was and surprised that I had never heard about this movie before. It began my fascination with indie horror films.
I am from Massachusetts and remember seeing the hospital from a highway. It sat behind all these pine trees, the only thing you could see was the top floor and the roof, was always creepy. Most of it was torn down in 2006, now its over priced apartments and condos.
Here's a *FUN FACT* that a lot of people leave out when doing deep dives into this movie is that it was originally shot with another person living in the hospital (suggesting it was a former patient or a homeless person) who was sneaking around and the main characters were unaware of this person. After production, they decided to remove this character (for various reasons) and left that void there, which really lends to the suspense and eeriness of the film.
Psychological horror is the best. This one is positively terrifying. Sean Clark also did a great video exploring the area before it all got demolished/built on (?). He didn't get permission but hats off to the man. The unintentional funny scene in the thumbnail. Kills me everytime: "Hey! F*ck youuu." And then Peter Mullan's expression, lol!
I remember in this movie came out didn't think much of it then I found it in the bargain bin at Walmart oh man give this a try actually it's a really good movie it's super creepy and watching all the extras and deleted scenes he kind of understand what they were going for and then it come to find out it was actually filmed where I live and it blew my mind
I forgot this one and how good it is. I think we took movies like this for granted back in those days maybe because there were a lot of great movies, both horror and not. Now people flip out over Longlegs, which was..meh...not a favorite for me, because good solid horror movies that aren't just a gore fest are becoming more rare.
I remember this movie it was recommended to me by my humanities teacher in middle school! Back when teachers discussed awesome stuff “horror films/ films in general” and wasn’t woke!
I explored this place when i was a kid with my friends, before the fire took out a section and the rest was torn down for housing, it was pretty late and magically all of our cell phones were dead. We heard someone yell in there and booked it towards another building, greeted with human heads lined up against a window, freaked us out until we realized we were next door at the cosmetology school lol.
Did this movie end with some woman shooting a guy in the head and marveling at his hole in the head or something like that? I vaguely remember that ending thinking she real cray cray.
@colewilliams9432 i hate comics book movies, haven’t seen any other than the 3 Christian Bale Batman movies. and i’m all for cerebral horror (see Stir of Echoes) but this was boring and corny. the whole “audio tapes of the multiple personalities” bit was laughable, COULD’VE been creepy if it had been done better.

I went to a rehab several years ago that was right across the street from the place in the movie in Danvers, MA. It was a very creepy looking place

i always thought simon was gordon no joke i thought gordon was a former patient loll but this movie is a classic Gem and still holds up

A great horror movie. Love it. But, we all know the line that made this film special. The Caruso line I employ to this very day.
