In the psychological horror SESSION 9, an asbestos removal crew start work in an abandoned insane asylum and discover a dormant evil that seems to have returned. Breaking down the story including the patient Mary and her important sessions, how it ties into our protagonist Gordon, and explaining the shocking twist ending.

It is scary. Asbestos can still be found in normal homes today. Same with lead. May not be mind blowing but frightens me
I'd argue capitalism is at least partially to blame, too. Gorden was under that much stress because it's work or starve. There's plenty of guys who commit the phenomenon known as family annihilation without the convenience of an evil spirit from a mental hospital to blame.

99% of this mental institution has at least one big dark spot on its history. Finding one without a dark history is rarer.
killerplunger By the 80s, mental hospitals weren’t full of fun, but most had decent care for those who absolutely needed it. Then Regan shut most federal hospitals down so patients could be cared for “through the community,” while providing no funds for this. Not surprisingly, many horribly impaired people ended up on the streets, and an average stay in hospital after a suicide attempt is a couple days because that is all insurance pays for. Which is worse?

I watched the movie today and legit was like one dude half ass cleaning graffiti, One guy listening to tapes, and other people staring out windows between the 5 of em they barley completed one room

"I live in the weak and the wounded" was a line that stayed with me for a *very* long time. Simon's voice is top-tier S-class spooky.
Me, too, actually - I've been a horror movie fan for a VERY long time and I rewatch many of my favorites, but Session 9 is the best horror movie I watched ONCE and will never fucking watch again - and it's *entirely* due to Simon's intensely creepy voice :
Mentally or spiritually, both interpretations are terrifying. I just watched the movie today and feel like Simon is one of the most interesting characters I have seen in a while

One of the most underrated horror movies. You can tell they had a very low budget and there's virtually no jumpscares or gore but they still managed to make a very creepy movie just using the asylum's atmosphere, sound design, talented actors and a plot that keeps you second guessing. Definite cult classic!

There is an alternate ending to this. When they are showing all the things Gordon did in his sleep killer state, they show a woman, she is watching everything. At the end when Gordon is begging on a dead phone to a dead wife to come home, this woman who has been seen throughout comes in and smashes Gordon's head in and kills him. I actually have the DVD. You should watch that one, it explains a lot.

I saw that part too. If I remember right, the woman had scars on her chest, meaning she was Mary.
This does add in the missing link of context for me.

@Laura LaRocco I was so confused the first time then, I watch the alternate and it made so much more sense. I wish they would have released that one. I love the movie either way.
Session 9 is fantastic. I think the movie spells out that it's a supernatural terror, and that Simon is a malevolent being that exists. Simon's voice doesn't come out as a variation of Mary's voice, like Billy and Princess. And when he says where he lives, he even explains he's not one of Mary's identities. Simon is an entity that preys on the minds of the weak. Why he waited in the asylum for so long isn't anything I can answer, but once he found Gordon he was set with his new host.
Fun fact Simon is the same voice actress as Mary just deliberately lowered a bit
Could be that he doesn't feel comfortable that he can find any other place outside the asylum where he can find hosts, and he's dependent on the knowledge that asylum patients have broken minds. There's no real evidence he can navigate the world.
Its what the Devil is all about, he lives in the weak and wounded people, who given up their hopes and in deep sorrows that’s how he preys !!!

I have had conversations with my wife - we love and own this movie on DVD - regarding that scene where Gordon is in his van, looking at his wife and baby as they enter the house. It is all shot from his angle, in a van, across the street. I have several questions regarding that scene at 4:53
1) Where is this insane street? Cars are flying by at 45 mph, inches away from the tiny property line, just perfect for raising a toddler... And is there no driveway? This leads to the second question: Are we seeing the back yard or the front? Who designed this house?? Who puts a stove directly in front of a door like that?
Either way, the shot is framed for us to see the pot of water on the stove. My guess would be that they used a giant pot so we could see it from so far away. The director has said that Gordon came to the USA to pursue the American Dream with hard work, and we see what that is worth in this one very important shot.

The grounds keeper talked about how old patients were still trying to get back onto the grounds. Was Gordon a past patient there that was released? Is that why Simon stuck with him because he remembered him from being a patient and was considered “weak”?

Lizzie K I was thinking that too. All that stuff Mike was talking about repressed memories. I was thinking Gordon forgot who he was. And subconsciously was drawn back there w/o fully knowing why.
@Laura LaRocco after reading your thoughts. I agree with you. There just isn’t a direct “aha.” It’s very interpretive. And although sometimes that can be fun. In the end the viewers want an answer. And that was overlooked.
@Joshua Hammond well it didn’t occur to me that he never left, since the building was old and dilapidated and he had a wife and young daughter. It’s interpretative. If I’m looking at it from your angle then, I can understand why it’s clearer for you.
I've seen this movie several times and this idea only just struck me when FoundFlix said that the groundskeeper mentioned that old patients were unleashed and would sometimes try to come back. Makes sense that he was a previous patient and was drawn back to the asylum and not knowing why. 🤷🏼♀️

I don't like the whole "The ghost made him do it " perspective, because it is much more interesting to see a man slowly finding out how he lost everything including his sanity.
@Lux Aeterna Maybe. On the other hand, Simon's voice is the voice of Mary's'voiceover actress, reduced in pitch. And in an alternate scene that came with a DVD, Mary shows up and kills Gordon.

Session 9 stayed with me for a WHILE. Please actually watch it people, they killed this atmosphere!! Also this explanation didn't really explore the possibility that Gordon is a past patient of the psyche hospital. They mention early on how old patients are still trying to get in and Gordon is clearly affected by different rooms on day 1. It could be that re-entering the hospital after all the years brought back suppressed violent emotions and the rest is history. Nothing confirms this theory but just a thought!
When they are checking the infected areas of hospital with the mayor, this theory of Gordon being a past patient is proven when Gordon out of context takes the lead of walking Phil through the hospital and mayor had to halt him and tells gordon to follow his lead and not the other way around. It shows Gordon is well versed with the hospital especially the 'snake pit' ward.
Really great film with multiple permutations that requires multiple viewing.

I was a “patient” on the property before it was converted to condo’s in about 2002. It was when that “Beltway-Sniper” was killing people in D.C. to be accurate. I was the treasurer for the patients and had other responsibilities. I would rent DVD’s and have a movie-night once a week for them. I played Session-9 for them one night but before we watched it, I explained the history of the property we were on and that the main building was actually shaped like a bat from above... Needless to say, there were tough-guys there who couldn’t sleep that night.✌️

When Hank is looting at night, he comes across an empty bottle of peanut butter on the floor, which is the exact same one that Gordon has on his grocery bag in the roses flashbacks. That was a bit of an early giveaway.
The deleted scenes and alternate ending really make this movie a masterpiece.

My mom did her psych rotation for nursing school at Danvers back in the early 70's. She said it was creepy even when it was still open. The staff never wore their IDs around their neck, because the patients were known to try to strangle the staff.
I do demolition and hazmat and 99% of the time the buildings are "abandoned" for our work. I prefer to destroy the building with an excavator than go on night shift and do this stuff. Gets creepier the bigger the building is, day after day

I don't think Simon is a spirit. Rather, I think he's a representation of the madness we find within the darkest corners of our mind. Sort of like the, "one bad day" thing the Joker mentions. Honestly, this movie left me with a lot of questions.
It’s definitely a demon. Slapping his wife would be a little reasonable but killing his whole family is absolutely not.

I was 8 when I first saw this film, I forgot the story, but there's this anxiety that lingers whenever I remember this film.
My conclusion was that Gordon was the one in the psychiatric unit and his co-workers were the different manifestations of his personalities.
Basically that Gordon is actually Mary and the whole movie was him just re-living the murder of his family. There’s that shot of Gordon after killing the new guy Craig where his face is juxtaposed to Mary’s photo.
I also thought Phil was the psychiatrist, especially when he tells Gordy to ‘wake up’.
Interesting movie, love this channel, you get to see movies in a whole new light!!

I worked in a repurposed psychiatric hospital in Alton, Il. The architecture was nearly the same. Though the insides had been modernized it was still creepy. I worked as a psych intern in the forensic lockdown. I loved the work, very interesting, but driving onto the campus each day was creepy as hell; I often had to go into one of many records rooms to pull current records but in the back were rows and rows of patient files going back 40+ years--I was never comfortable in that room and the smell of old paper...
When i watched the film i thought of Simon as the violent nature that sleeps inside us all. However simon can only come out if you yourself are not strong enough to resist your nature. In the words of Paarthurnax “Which is better? To be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?”

I also like how the alter that killed wasn't actually an alter and was an evil entity separate from her. DID is too often portrayed in a weird horrific light. Nice to see that wasn't totally the case here from what I could tell

Went on a tour back in 1979 with my High School Psych class to Danver's Mental hospital. Feeling of deep dread walking through that place.
I haven’t watched a great scary movie in a while and honestly this one was put together very well, the way it ended w the a bit of the recording and w that last piece of information it really gives you the chills! I love it 💜

Session 9 is a criminally underrated watch.
Slasher movies aren’t usually a big deal watching alone, but this one stayed with me for a couple of days. What’s terrifying is the line separating reality and your mind’s perception of it. There is no physical foe to confront, your just screwed. That scene of the younger nephew, I believe, trying to out run the darkness was very symbolic, as well as scary as hell.
That scene where the lights are cutting out and he's running away as fast as he can actually gave me a physical reaction of fear. That is very rare for me indeed

I love that movie.
When I first saw this movie many many years ago I assumed Gordon was a previous patient in the asylum and there never was no Mary. But she was a part of Gordon's broken mind. That he was actually a patient there who came back much like the security guard there said to them in the beginning. That Gordon some how had blocked it out and he eventually made his way back to the place after experiencing a deep psychological break. That he was one of the patients that escaped and ended up on the street.
I wonder if maybe there was a Mary but Gordon was actually her brother, Peter. It’d explain his choice of weapon (the knife).

Recently rewatched this and seeing this video makes me happy it's getting the attention it deserves.
I'm so happy that this movie is getting recognition. It's one of my favorite horror films, although not without it's flaws. The dialogue and overall acting could've been better. But even with that, it's an amazing movie.
Plus we can all appreciate the sudden zoom-in with a "Fuck yooouuuu" attached.

This movie (as well as Jacob's Ladder) actually inspired the creators of the Silent Hill games. In Silent Hill 3, they took the visual of the wheelchair from the movie.
Seeing that wheelchair reminded me of one of the greatest ghost stories ever "the changeling", the good one with George C Scott, not Angelina Jolie!!! I bet you don't dare to do that one!!! It's too scary!!! But you should!!! Please, "the changeling"!!!

I remember Gordon's ending being so much worse then described. It sounds like he hurts himself, as an excuse to beat and kill his wife. I took it as him being contaminated after seeing that chair in the first walkthrough

One of my favorite horror movies because it's actually BELIEVABLE.. Gordo and Mike's storylines could be totally seperate, but the editing suggests that they're connected. It could just be a stressed out guy having a psychotic break, or they could be intertwined and it actually IS something supernatural.. I love the ambiguity of it. Can we be sure that poor Gorden didn't go into a large room with nothing but a gurney and huge mirror, which slowly caused his reflection to become covered in black tendrils?
And eventually freeze the reflection in place despite Gordon still moving?

I own this movie on DVD. I recommend actually watching it. Fun fact: this movie, along with Jacob's Ladder, was the inspiration for the Silent Hill games.

small correction: I decided to watch this movie when I saw there was an ending explained on it, and the generator didn't overheat, it ran outta gas. really small point and im sorry to be nitpicky but I literally just finished the movie and noticed this. I love your videos, I'm one of the small amount of people that likes to know exactly what us happening in a movie to see if it worth watching but sometimes I'm sad when it's said it's a movie on Netflix (not this one) and I don't find it there but for something like this happening your videos are perfect as well.

I liked that movie too, it was a really interesting concept
I mean the concept was good. The first 15 mins was great, the development until it hit the climax is good after that is a disappointment. Like wtf, yo... like wtf.......it didnt event make sense. It is a total hypocrisy from the "MC"...i never liked her and after know what happened it made me hate her to the point I could care less about her descendants.

One of the most underrated film to come out. I saw it while doing my undergrad in Boston 20 years ago; the story still holds up.
Session 9 was such a fantastic movie, one of the few that have actually spooked me. So glad it's getting the appreciation it deserves

Please do an "Ending explained" on the movie "9", it is a movie with little 'puppets' living in a world where humanity seems to have vanished, really good movie.
They didn't vanish, they were all wiped out by man made machines
@@blackdragon6 They did, they only show very little of the fights. Something that also stays unexplained is what happen to the other countries.

@@crad5476 They didn't vanish, they were very clearly implied to have been killed in a war against their own machines. Ofc they didn't show the fight or other countries because it wasn't necessary or relevant to the story/characters. All you needed to know was they were dead, thus the bodies (also note this was a kids movie so they weren't going to animate piles of corpses either)
