      IMO, I think gateron switches are far better than outemu and cherry mx switches because they're smoother. Buying the gateron switches by themselves is also cheaper than buying the outemu switches by themselves so if you have the money and know how to solder, I'd suggest giving them a try.

    I also have both Cherry blue and Outemu blue based keyboards, and prefer the feel of the Outemu for the same reasons. The tactility just feels more precise, somehow. Cherry keyswitches have always been overrated compared to common keyswitches of the past anyway (Alps, for example), so it's not really as surprising as it initially seems that knockoffs could improve upon them. It'd be like if Coke went out of business leaving Pepsi the only cola on the market, then a Chinese company made a cola that tasted more like Coke than Pepsi. A lot of people would prefer that Chinese Coke.

      @Austin1990 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Modern Classic
      Good analogy. But, I feel that way about all switches with the same style as Cherry MX switches.
      Browns just feel like a rough linear switch when you are typing. Clear feel like a mushy rubber dome keyboard with a spring at the bottom instead of bottoming out. Blues have decent tactile feedback, but they feel sticky on the upstroke. That is an avoidable side effect of the Cherry MX design that comes out when Blues push the design to its limit of tactility.
      I have not tried Matias switches. However, the descriptions of them sounds very good. I can't find a reliable keyboard with them, though.

    • @phenomanII
      @phenomanII 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well, I had to swap the Outemu switches that came with my keyboard for Cherry ones because over a third of them activated at a different height than the click/tactile bump. That kind of defeats the point of the tactile bump, since it meant absolutely bugger all.

    • @Austin1990
      @Austin1990 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      motorbiker46
      Even Cherry MX switches register the keypress in a different place than the tactile bump. Probably, you just had some severe variation issues with those switches. Kailh switches, for example, vary up to +-30%.
      I do not know about Outemu switches, but I tried Kailh Brown switches a few years ago. I found that they varied more than Cherry MX Brown switches, but they did not vary much.
      However, I just bought a Cherry MX Blue keyboard, and the keys vary a LOT. The specs allow them to vary up to almost 20%. So, maybe I just got lucky with my MX Brown keyboard or didn't notice it as much since they are so much less tactile than MX Blues. Another possibility is that Cherry is pushing the tolerance limit more to save costs.

    My Cherry Blues are LOUD, quite obnoxious really, but they are such a joy to use for typing. I had to go up to my parents' house and use a non-mechanical keyboard for some computer maintenance and it was not a very pleasant experience. It felt like I was typing through mud. You don't really realize how loud these things are until you're playing a quiet game and you're really immersed in the gameplay and then you hear *CLACK CLACK CLACK*. You also don't realize just how many keys you're pressing and how complex of a job your hands are doing until you start playing a game like that. When you can physically hear every key press, it's both amazing and a little freaky at the same time.

    Outemu blues was awesome.
    Well, only for the first 2 weeks, even though I used it for around 3 years.
    I moved back to membrane because it was annoying the people I lived with and the loud click just gets old really quickly.
    Plus, I'm sure that those clicks will give you hearing problems down the line if you don't use earbuds with them. lol
    Recently purchased a board with Outemu Reds and I like it. It ddoes give you a mechanical feel but with way lower noise level.
    Strangely, the reds feel heavier in terms of actuation force than the blues I have, even though they are the same on paper. Also, feels like there's less travel distance as well than the blues. Probably because the switches are linear unlike the blue switches.

    I tried a couple of keyboards with the outemu brown keys. The main observation is the consistency (or lack there of). And I am referring to the consistency between boards AND within the same board (disparity between the individual keys). Some feels really crisp and snappy while others are a little scratchy. So if you are going for the outemu keys, it really depends on your luck. A little like the silicon lottery for CPUs and GPUs but with the greater odds of picking the short end of the stick.

    I think the cherries sound kinda like a dry rattley cough (the rattling seems to be from the upstroke) and the otemus sound sharper and pingier. My new otemu blue keyboard is also also a lot quieter and lower-pitched than the otemu board in this video. It's more clicky and clacky. This might be because it is a heavier, better-built board on a pad. My observations comparing a cherry and otemu blue board are similar to those in the video, except for the sound difference with the otemus. My otemu board is a Red Dragon K552 and the cherry board I tested was a Corsair K70. I hope this helps someone.
    I would llike to add that you should try out switches in person if possible because your preferences might be surprising. For example, when I tried MX Browns in person (which I was strongly considering) I couldn't stand them. This felt almost mushy and kind of sandy.

  • @higler.
    @higler. 8 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    The difference wont be so much in feel but more so in performance over it's lifetime. Cherry MX's should last up to 50 million clicks since that's what they are stress tested for in their german lab.
    This is one of those cases where it's worth paying a little extra up front if you want you keyboard to last a good 5-10 years. If you don't care about that, then yeah, there are plenty of Chinese made switches that will work fine, but probably wont last very long compared to authentic cherry mx's.

    I'm designing my own keyboard for "office and Office" use (definitely pun intended). I decided to mix different switches for different zones. The normal typing zone will be either Cherry red or brown, or Speed if I get them. Reason of this choice is purely about the noise, I don't want to be a statistics of workplace murders. Function keys and dedicated macro keys will be black, arrow keys will be blue, for different tactile on a no-gap keyboard. No number pad because I don't need it, and I don't know why people need a fix number pad. Should I really need one I'll make a standalone one with all red switches, because I use number pads with my left hand, and the less I need to fight with the switches, the better.

  • @srobart

    If you ever compare keyboards again, it might be worthwhile to get a bit cheesy and have someone else set them up for you, so you don't know which is which, and then wear a blindfold during the test so you can't identify the keyboard by sight, then you can have a more true comparison. You're a very rational guy, above all and that likely means that value is going to be first and foremost in your mind when you're evaluating products, because that is a very non-subjective value (the pressing of keys, on the other hand, is very subjective). One of these keyboards is quite a bit cheaper than the other (*HALF* the price), so in your mind, you're probably judging them based on that fact, even if it's not necessarily consciously done. If you didn't KNOW which keyboard was which, we would get a more accurate assessment, based solely on the feel of the keys (which would be more beneficial to me, anyway, you'd need to ask other people what they want).

  • @iideathkid4283

    I know we all have mixed opinions here but it really comes down to preference and budget. I recently bought a mechanical keyboard to upgrade from a membrane and I've had a wonderful time on it. It has Outemu switches and personally I think the feedback is wonderful and I personally like the kind of clinky metallic sound of the keyboard. It's satisfying and for my budget it was a great investment.

    • @GeorgePerakis
      @GeorgePerakis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The switches aren't your problem if you want longevity. Old Model Ms were only rated for 20 million presses per switch. Less than half of Cherry's. But guess what? If you go on EBay right now and look for old Model Ms, you'll find thousands of examples that have been used for 20 years and are still going strong. If you find any old Cherry keyboards like G80s, chances are most examples you'll find will be problematic. Why? Because the build quality of the actual keyboards was hot garbage. A switch that's "only" rated for 40 million presses, or whatever the Outemus are worth, isn't your problem if the board bends and wobbles every time you press on it, or if the circuit board was designed by a toddler, or if the cable's connector is soldered cheaply onto the board, or if the capacitors are alkaline pieces of shit from the mid 2000s, or if the cable itself is shielded by tissue paper and dreams, or if your keycaps are thin and shitty ABS.
      Point is, switch longevity shouldn't be your major concern.
      I did some calculations. Spread across 26 character keys plus a spacebar, to wear out an otherwise perfect keyboard decked out with any cherry equivalent rated for 50 million presses, assuming an average of five letters per word and approximately equal use of every letter in the alphabet, you'd have to type out 2500 90000 word long novels in order to wear out those switches.
      To give you an idea of how long that would take, assuming you can type at a rate of 100 wpm, and assuming you can type for 12 hours a day absolutely non-stop at that speed without ever pausing for breath or even just to think, you'd have to keep going at that pace for approximately 8 years and 8 months before your switches wear out.
      Your average keyboard has a warranty of two years at most these days. Do you really think they're made to max out the longevity of your switches? Do you really?

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My Cherry MX red switches barely make any noise if you only half press them. You don't have to smash them all the way down like a normal membrane keybaord. In fact, you can't hear the actuation in mid travel. You don't feel exactly when it turns the switch on, but its very light if you want to type for a long period of time while being efficient (or lazy, however you prefer to think of it).
      I would recommend trying out several different keyboards at a display in a store so you can hear the difference in real life. I'm actually much louder with a normal office keybaord, and that's something I wouldn't have guessed!

    I have a 25€ keyboard with Outemo Blue switches (the worst part of it is the very noticeable ghosting, can't do a shout or bring up the weapon wheel while running in Skyrim and GTA V respectively), and I've noticed that the keys actuate just ever so slightly after the click. Not enough to be noticeable while typing, but still.

  • @necrisro
    @necrisro 8 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    My experience with Outemu Blue: Not uniform, the pressure requirement is +/- 5 grams randomly among the keys. They wear out EXTREMELY quickly, which key is random but a few will lose the click and become more like a red or black. Save yourself from anger, go with Kailh in a Tesoro or something.

    Just got my outemu blue keyboard. haven't woken anyone up yet but paranoid and typing slowly as if it will help. haven't found faster typing than with membrane yet because i'm not used to the sound. Honestly slightly disappointed with the "feeling the actuation point" because you actually don't. It's not that precise. It clicks on activation, but can be raised to inactive without releasing past the detent, allowing multi press bumps. I may end up enjoying it as a feature; it's just not what I expected.

      @@kacperuminski1547 Aristotle and its modded variants are really good ones to, but Aristotle's housing is shit and some people don't like modding. Another thing to note is that Aristotle still uses clickjacket, while BOX switches use their own mechanics. I don't mean buckling spring being an old design is bad or anything, it just doesn't suit the concept of being modern.

    The off-brand keyboard has a different sound click profile too, it has a higher pitched 'tick' noise than the cherry brand.

    The outemu keyboard sounds when you type on it sounds like you are beating a bad toy xylophone or some bad wood dominoes /pieces. Listening to that feels like someone is raping my ears.
    Meanwhile the cherry blues make a satisfying clic, even if i prefer and use reds because i prefer them without the clic.

      The sound might be better on the MX Blues, but the tactile feedback, which many would argue is more important, is much worse.

    I don't care about the sound because I don't hear myself typing over headphones, but the outemus can feel pretty good but they are very hard and clicky switches.

    And in the end it comes down to preferences: some people like the way an otemu blue feels and some like the way a cherry blue feels. An otemu blue is not a knockoff from cherry blue, the stem color blue is universally agreed on clicky so the clicky otemu switch is called blue.

    Honestly when it comes to key feel in your testing you should have been using the same set of caps for all the boards as cap plastic type and quality can make a HUGE difference int he way a switch feels.

    I just recently purchased my first "gaming" keyboard. I saw that it outemu blue switches, and didn't really think much of it. Since then, I absolutely love them. At the time of writing this, I've had the keyboard for just a couple weeks so far. The keyboard I have is the Tecware phantom RGB.

    I have Outemu blue switches for 4-5 months now, and they become less "clicky" over the time.
    You can definitely tell the difference between wasd keys and other keys which are not mostly used like print screen, home, end etc.
    Is this a problem with cherry blues too?

  • @tommyg2543

    You have to take in the account of housing. The g skill will have a nice deep sound, the first player has no real housing to change the sound.

    I just recently switched from an MX Blue mechanical keyboard to an Outemu Blue mech.
    It's fascinating as I have exactly the opposite experiences and observations.
    I found the Outemus to be harder to press/actuate. I also seem to have more typing errors with the Outemus than my old MX Blue keyboard.
    Not sure if it's because I used the MX Blues for a decade and just recently switched to Outemu, or the fact that I have used the MX Blues for a decade and the keys have worn out, therefore making the keys easier to press?
    I do have to agree with the Outemus being louder than the MX Blues.
    Anyways, great video comparing the two.

      @trinifella1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The keys have worn out. I've noticed this on my Outemu blues as well, after heavy heavy use of gaming for years. The WASD keys are much easier to press than the others I use less often

    You also need to take into account the chassis. Also do be sure to try Kailh/NovelKeys BOX Jade switches, especially since you like clicky keys. If you like the light weighting, Kailh Blue or Kailh Speed Bronze are great. But honestly, nothing competes with Alps SKCM Blue switches.

    Cherry Blues definitely sound and feel different from board to board - I've compared Blues in a G.skill KM780MX to the Blues in my Das Professional 4 ( yes, they are Cherry - I got the board before they offered greetech switches ). The Das is much louder and the keys feel remarkably "springier", if that makes any sense. Sound and feel seem like they're heavily influenced by how the keyswitch is mounted. Are the keys in the G.skill boards PCB or Plate mounted? I'd be interested in seeing a comparison video between different Cherry MX Blue boards to get your take on it.

    From my own experience, I've found that cherry switches are just more consistent. I've had some issue with kaihl in that some switches don't feel the same. Cherry can have the same issue but I've found that it occurs in fewer switches.

    One thing i have noticed on different keyboards with the same keys is when one has an aluminum plate. it feels less "mushy" and is audibly a bit less hollow, perhaps something you can test on volume differences between the two. Also on what VoxelFish said about an open keyboard, I did try removing the upper trim on my mech keyboard with blues and it most definitely had a different sound, perhaps not louder or quieter, but different. It may be hard to tell with just the keycaps off because you aren't typing, but it would be something to try too, even if only to see for yourself, not in a video.

    Tried Outemu Reds before Cherry Reds, Cherry's were far more consistent for me. The Outemu switches felt different depending on the key I pressed, even after breaking it in over a month, so I personally stuck with the Cherry. That being said, the Outemu was half the price and I do think many would find it just as enjoyable as the Cherry switches, I just personally couldn't stand the inconsistency when playing games, since the D key felt off.

    I have both as well. Outemu Blue on the Magiforce and Cherry Blue on Leopold. I have been fully won over to the Outemu switches. They are the clickiest switches in the world right now. Loud and satisfying! I won't swap again for anything less than a classic IBM Model M buckling spring keyboard.

    Just to point something out, there are Cherry MX Green switches which need a lot more actuation force than blues. Nice comparison video!

  • @MistahMOB

    Cherry MX Speed Switches (Grey) are my favorite. Satisfying click, fast actuation, distinct click noise, and extremely easy to push the keys. (My left thumb with the most gentle rest on the space bar clicks it lol not the keys fault)

  • @greyareaRK1
    @greyareaRK1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    My Outemo (not Outemu) blue switches are 80g of force, which I believe is higher than Cherry. Either way, I like them. I added silicone o-rings, but I'm not sure they're an improvement. I have to type more lightly to get that same tactile feel. Zealios' padded cherry tops inspired me to experiment with different materials to muffle the clack into something bassy while allowing a full stroke. Some thick PBT caps (ordered, to replace the ugly gamer-y font) should pitch the click and clack a bit lower.

    • @greyareaRK1
      @greyareaRK1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're 80g switches - much higher than Cherry.
