So what I'm essentially getting out of this is that the red and blue are complete opposites and the brown is kind of the median, leaning a little more towards the red switches.
I love brown switches, the tactile bump is way more important than it seems. It really does help a ton when typing, as my hands are less tired and it's much easier to register typos. And they're as good in gaming as red switches. I used to love red switches too, but after switching to brown ones I can't imagine myself ever going back to red. I think that brown ones are the safest beginners choice when it comes to mechanical keyboards. Even though I had tons of them I still love browns the most.
I've had a Red Mechanical keyboard for years, I don't exactly agree with the whole "fatigue" thing, I've never ever experienced any sort of fatigue from typing, and I've typed a lot especially while gaming and playing World of Warcraft. The specific keyboard ive used is the Corsair Vengeance K Keyboard I believe it's called, (looks like the red one in the video). I also don't feel that you have to "push down all the way to know you've clicked the key" you can type and put just a slight amount of force with your fingers while you type, some people just tend to use a lot of force while they type like they are playing a very weighted piano (key) just type like a normal person, u don't need to Hulk smash your keys. Get a red if you want quite keys, u should be able to tell the force needed to register it's really not that complicated, one last thing I'm not trying to be a dick, I think his opinions were fantastic, and I would agree with most of his points I just don't think the fatigue is that accurate in my experience.
Yeah, that comment will be really useful to people watching this video! And yes, I try to emphasize that these are MY PERSONAL opinions and experiences. In my experience my finger just fly a million miles an hour without fail on blues and browns, and with reds I struggle. But there are tons of people out there who love reds! So in the end I really reccommend that people get some hands on with different types of switches if they can before purchasing, and hopefully this video will get them going in the right direction based on their own opinions. And no, I don't think you are trying to put me down, that was a really helpful and insightful comment!
I used a keyboard on a laptop for about a year and then went back to a membrane keyboard on a desktop. My hands got tired so fast for about a day or two until I got used to it, again! The fatigue thing is real :P
That's for sharing your mind, i have blue switches, and i agree about feedback, it's really doing you more confident when you feel feedback, when i trying to print on membrane keyboard, my fingers get tired quickly (because i have to push keys all the way (or to the end)), thanks for the video, i have really enjoyed
Got red switches for my first mechanical keyboard and I honestly can't imagine myself liking the other ones more. I absolutely hate the noise the blue switches make so that was an instant pass for me, I just really, REALLY love how smooth these red switches feel
@Farrel Rafi I wouldn't know if it's "better" or anything but I have absolutely no complaints about them at all. Still love them a lot, they are very responsive since I don't have to press the key all the way down in order for it to register. The linearity of each keystroke is really nice

I used to have red switches and they were great. But I switched to blue switches and they are so much better, so clicky and they feel so real, I love the sound too. It really feels that you're actually typing.
One of the few to clearly describe the differences between switches. It’s surprising how little keyboard review videos talk about the switches, other than to say what color it is on the one they are reviewing.
Basil no but from some people I hear they are better but also cheaper. I personally really like the Kailh Box Royal switches because they have a very sharp bump.
Gateron browns have a more noticeable bump than cherry browns imo. You still can’t really feel it unless you focus on the bump. Blues (I’m talking cherry, gateron, outemu, etc) tend to have a rattly click. Most non enthusiasts don’t notice it because they haven’t tried/heard other switches outside of the standard red, brown, blue, and black options. It’s rattly because the click is produced by a click jacket. Switches like Kailh Box White are superior to blues imo because the click is much more clearer as it’s produced by a metal click bar.
It depends on how much you like the noise. I've found that I like the Reds better. I love the industrial snap of the Blues but during long typing sessions I find it almost painful by the end. Personal opinion, of course.

Huh, thank you got the straightforward and concise comparison! The side by side comparison was great with your explanation of personal experience. I was thinking brown switches as a kind of middle ground would be the best choice for me, and this confirmed my suspicions. Thanks for helping me navigate this field a little better :)
Blue; most satisfying typing experience. Red sound like missing something. Less kick with the touch. Brown is alot better than red & have better clicking feel. Agree to blue as the best feel of them all.
@@dizzynu5698 well I have a red and a blue and I use both, since I'm more used to the blue I prefer using that but after a certain time I start using the red one, like some people like louder keyboards or the sounds of the switches, I like the sound of the blue one that's only reason I use it
Thanks for this. I'm new to buying proper keyboards and this was just what I needed to make my final call. I especially found the "wakes up the baby" measurement of sound intensity to be a better scale than the decibel standard :)
I like the red switches because you can make very minute movements in games when using wasd. I got my logitech keyboard with the red switches because I was tired of fighting with the web on my old keyboard trying to move my character a tiny amount.

about the red switches - because of the fact they have like 40g force to activate makes it easy to tell that you actually hit the key. so unless your fingers made of chopsticks, you should be able to tell you hit the button and softly (40g force)
I am getting my first mechanical keyboard and this guy just saved my money being wasted on something that I don't prefer but all the other reviewers prefer. Great and realistic description of switches!
Thank you for this! Mechanical keyboard newbie here, looking more for typing than gaming. I play games casually, but I'm typing thousands of words every day. Settled on the brown switches
@antonio santuy It feels WAY less mushy and is much more satisfying and better feeling to game on. They are also way more durable, and have less delay.
Thank you. Pretty sure you helped me make my decision. I want the blues cause I love the "click" but I think over time it may get a bit too much, so Browns it is.
@@stefxy682 oh man. This was the beginning of my keyboard journey. I've come a long way since and have dug way too deep down the rabbit hole 😅. Answer to ur question, yes I did end up getting browns. They're chill for a first decent mechanical board. When it comes to tactiles they really are the middle of the ground as far as how tactile they actually are when compared to other switches in the sane category. I'm using linears now - durock lavanders lubed with krytox 205g0. My next tactile switches are going to be between boba u4t or c3equalz kiwis. I have some linear c3equalz tangerines for my Space65 whenever I get it. I'll say after now having tried more switches I do tend to gravitate towards linears.
I love blue and brown switches. I got my first mechanical keyboard and it's blue switch. I'm planning to buy the brown switches now that I watched this video. Thanks a lot madude
I currently have a blue switch, mechanical keyboard. I was starting to dislike how loud it was overtime, so I was debating between getting a red and brown switch. This, TH-cam video gave me a really really good layout of how the keyboards are. So I will be getting a brown switch especially because I do like the clicky feeling but I don’t like it too loud. Thank you so much for this video it helped.
Thanks this was great to watch. Was trying to convince a mate why choosing the right keyboard isn't as simple as just buying any one. I live in a quiet place and I had to express why clicky was so bad and why I prefer the browns as its a all round badass choice
What I've come to realise is that you just need to try out each switch for yourself. Could buy one of those switch testers on Amazon. At first based on videos, I wanted MX Browns, but I didn't particularly enjoy them and switched them out for MX Blues and never looked back.
blue switch - most common - most popular - kinda noisy, only downside - clicky - 4mm travel distance - you can feel when it actuates - physically feel when the click happens red switches - feels better than a membrane keyboard - much more silent - cannot feel where it actuates, no click - smash them all the way down - you dont know when the keys register - more fatigue in hands brown switch - small, subtle difference than red - tactical (?) - feel the click, but slight (tiny)
red is for gaming thats why its not register because in gameing excendat key press is not good , and blue is for typing and for typing it should by type if u press half and brown is in middle of both but blue sound is realy good
Man you should write a novel. If you are this good at describing the subtle differences between keyboard clicks just imagine what you could achieve if you had to describe characters, settings and landscapes.
My first mechanical had blue switches; I used it for 8 years before buying my new keyboard with brown switches. Maybe I'm just still used to the blue switches but I feel like I make more mistakes typing on the browns. I like them but I'm just so tempted to go back to the blues.
I have tried these keyboards in my local electronics shop, but none of them come close to the IBM Model M buckling spring keyboard which I have. The response and snappiness of the Model M keyboard simply cannot be beaten.
For anyone about to buy a keyboard based off this video, the blue switches feel BY FAR the best when typing or gaming, something so satisfying about them trust me on this.
Thank you for keeping it simple and not overcomplicating it by trying to compare/contrast reds blues and browns to f***king ZX102 half Aquamarine half Lavender switches. I love you.
I ended up going Blue for my first mechanical keyboard, and I've never regretted it. I'm one of those strange people that enjoys the clicking and clacking noise (I'm more of an audio sensory person in general), so the issue I ended up having with Red and Brown once I tried them later is that they didn't have sound nearly as good as Blues. Red caused me to become fatigued pretty quickly because I was constantly hitting the keys all the way down to the base expecting to hear that initial tactile click and never did, and while the Brown was slightly better in that regard it still wasn't loud enough for me to be confident I had actually hit the key in the first place.
@@michaelwatson1390 My fingers fatigued because I'd slam my fingers all the way down until I met resistance, which also just so happened to be the extremely solid keyboard base. While enough practice would have *eventually* broke that habit, I didn't see the point in dealing with sore fingers until said habit was broken. And in regards to wanting to hear the click to ensure I'm hitting the key, I'm a fairly heavy gamer, which means I'm very rarely ever looking at the chat box as I'm playing or doing other things within the game. Hearing that click assures me that I'm hitting they keys, and allows me to type faster since I can let go of said key as soon as I hear the click.
@@michaelwatson1390 If you have spent your entire life typing one way, or a rather long time using a specific type of keyboard, do you bother with changing how you type, or in this case, changing to a different keyboard entirly and having to completely relearn how to type? No. You don't. You'll likely stick to whatever it is that you're already familiar with, because fundamentally there's nothing wrong with how you're already doing things. Not having the fine motor skills has nothing to do with it. I do things my way because there's ultimately nothing wrong with doing so and no point in changing to or teaching myself something different. And that's all there is to it. I don't like how you're implying I have some sort of medical condition and that's why I'm doing things in this "obviously wrong" way. If anything, your way is the wrong way for assuming that everyone else who doesn't type or use the same keyboard as you do just lack the capacity to mimic you.
After you get used to red, they are the best feeling of them all, as a user of all 3 switch types, I have come to conclusion that the smoothness and linear capability makes cherry mx(or any other equivalent)the best, due to the very small activation weight you don't need to worry that you have not pressed the key as matt said above. If you get used to it you don't even need to push the key all the way, giving you a speed advantage. Also I have been using the cherry mx reds for more than a year now for long gaming sessions, I feel no fatigue what so ever. It is silent so it is a perfect streamer choice as a lot of streamers use the ducky cherry mx silents, well of course unless you make asmr content the blues are the way to go. But this is just an opinion of another fellow tech user.
I know this video's older but I felt like I should explain something that doesn't really need explaining yet might be useful to know. - "Clicky" or tactile switches are louder fundamentally and give a physical and auditory feedback, whereas linears don't have that noise. In this video, he actually didn't show stock MX reds, he showed "silent" reds which are linear. Basically, if you want the noise look for clicky/tactile and if not, go linear or silent. - The difference in blues, reds, browns, and my personal favorite silvers is the travel time and force needed, not necessarily the noise level. Blues go deep and activate at the click (popular for typists), reds go mid (a good hybrid for gamers and typists), browns go short (great for gamers, still good for typing), and silvers activate almost immediately which reduces fatigue but will likely drastically increase errors when first using them. - Nothing's wrong with the video, very intuitive for learning and it shared honest experience, I just wanted to share something a bit more technical.
Im kind of reluctant on blues because I feel like it would be annoying to people in my house but honestly i think they might feel the best to use for typing and for games. If you do a surface search people say brown is best (and that was what i got) because it feels good but it is quiet however if you search any deeper people say they feel like sandy reds.
Watched so many videos about choosing switch types, this is the only one I've come across, that gets the point across concisely and clearly. Cheers mate, keep making vids!
@@amelm2788 No such thing as best. Red is fast but fast can be a problem too. If you are a gamer(which I am) red is To sensitive, I made mistakes in millisecond fights that got me killed. Red for typing is also a problem until you relearn the feel of it. Typo city. Brown is a little more forgiving, in the sense that a misplaced fumble finger wont register and cause a trainwreck. Red for a robot. Brown for the rest of us ham handers.
I wish I found this before I bought RK68 red switches. I used to type using Razer's green switches (which equivalents to blue) and the small bump you mentioned doesn't exist in red switches so typing doesn't feel tactile and actually feels like I'm using a membrane keyboard. Also, the switch is too touch sensitive that resting my fingers on the keyboard causes it to click random letters or the spacebar even (especially in game) and I've been mistyping a lot ever since I started using red switches and I'm thinking of getting a brown one to get that tactile feel again.
What a Great comparison Matte. I like this pattern of comparison too, straight to the point. No wasting time on "Intro", "Outro", "Please subscribe...", blah blah... 👍

I love brown. Even as a gamer, I prefer it to red, The click and tactile feel is like a massage to my fingers and my soul, I need it.

Yeah if you like the smooth feeling, then you got it! I personally didnt like the smooth feel at first, but over time I am starting to like it more.
Does red better for gaming in general?

Brown is probably my choice since it doesn’t sound loud and still feels tactile.
Yeah but not Cherry MX Brown. I'd rather go with something like Kailh Box Royals personally.
@@Niels_f2704 gatorons idk how to spell its but gatorons browns I think are the best browns
Yeah I heard something about them too. I have never really been impressed by Cherry MX switches.
Basil no but from some people I hear they are better but also cheaper. I personally really like the Kailh Box Royal switches because they have a very sharp bump.
For those who wants to know it is gateron switches
Confidence in pressing the keys was a really interesting point. Thanks for this video!
"these are supposed to be tactical" you mean tactile lol .......so looks like I'm going with brown switches
The blue may be loud but you must admit they are the best sounding

about the red switches - because of the fact they have like 40g force to activate makes it easy to tell that you actually hit the key.

I have some linear c3equalz tangerines for my Space65 whenever I get it.

jonathan coronado do you realy feel the bump in the click since hats the main reason why I want to get it
blue switch
- most common
- most popular
- kinda noisy, only downside
- clicky
- 4mm travel distance
- you can feel when it actuates
- physically feel when the click happens
red switches
- feels better than a membrane keyboard
- much more silent
- cannot feel where it actuates, no click
- smash them all the way down
- you dont know when the keys register
- more fatigue in hands
brown switch
- small, subtle difference than red
- tactical (?)
- feel the click, but slight (tiny)
red is for gaming thats why its not register because in gameing excendat key press is not good , and blue is for typing and for typing it should by type if u press half and brown is in middle of both but blue sound is realy good
Man you should write a novel. If you are this good at describing the subtle differences between keyboard clicks just imagine what you could achieve if you had to describe characters, settings and landscapes.
XD
I love you.
"these are suppose to be tactical"
wayne is a loser ‘suppost’💀💀
I personally have a brown but i like the blue switch sounds better but the browns are better for everything else in my opinion so i like the browns.

I wish I could go from browns to reds but every time I use reds I bottom out and it then feels like it takes more force. Just can't get used to reds.

Im looking for a third keyboard in last 6 months cause my parents are this close to evicting me because of how noisy my keyboards are.
I know this video's older but I felt like I should explain something that doesn't really need explaining yet might be useful to know.
-
"Clicky" or tactile switches are louder fundamentally and give a physical and auditory feedback, whereas linears don't have that noise. In this video, he actually didn't show stock MX reds, he showed "silent" reds which are linear. Basically, if you want the noise look for clicky/tactile and if not, go linear or silent.
-
The difference in blues, reds, browns, and my personal favorite silvers is the travel time and force needed, not necessarily the noise level. Blues go deep and activate at the click (popular for typists), reds go mid (a good hybrid for gamers and typists), browns go short (great for gamers, still good for typing), and silvers activate almost immediately which reduces fatigue but will likely drastically increase errors when first using them.
-
Nothing's wrong with the video, very intuitive for learning and it shared honest experience, I just wanted to share something a bit more technical.

Im kind of reluctant on blues because I feel like it would be annoying to people in my house but honestly i think they might feel the best to use for typing and for games. No such thing as best.
Great video, easy to watch without the gimmicks. Thank you.
