Florida's Best Tasting Fish! Hogfish & Snapper Offshore Bottom Fishing

In this video, I went 12-15 miles offshore of Tampa Bay, Florida with ‪@JCFishinCharters‬ to go bottom fishing for hogfish and mangrove snapper. We also caught some gag grouper, red grouper, and amberjacks as bycatch while dropping live fiddler crabs, shrimp, greenbacks, and pinfish as bait.

Super appreciate you noting the distance offshore -- I have an old school Key West 135 and got normally 8-10 offshore and feel like there's no reason to travel the extra 5 to hit further reefs. Got my first gag this year and was a beauty 30" nearshore but this gives me reason to have a solo morning and push out further. Love your vids and hopefully see ya my dude out there!

The bite had been so good nearshore in the Sarasota-Tampa gulf like some kids I know were in 60 feet of water and caught blackfin over 30 pounds

That's a respectable catch in our area especially at that depth. We go out of Hurricane and usually 70 foot is when we get into good stuff

That spot is pretty good for hogs right around keeper size. But yeah if you want ones consistently that you don’t need to measure, you usually have to go deeper

Excuse my ignorance. How do you tell if it’s a female or male?

Hogfish are “protogynous hermaphrodites”, which means they’re all born female and then transition into males. Different factors in the environment determine when they make the switch, but it’s typically when they reach 14 inches. Females are obviously smaller with shorter pale snouts and males are larger with longer darker snouts
