@@-chenlanying5818 I'm going to assume you aren't being sarcastic and answer you honestly. I have absolutely no idea how knowledgeable you are in fandom or fanfic in particular, so I'm gonna write out the whole, detailed explanation. The short(er) answer is the first paragraph, and the others just go more in depth. Feel free to stop reading once you get the gist. The fic at 2:00 was written in 1st person (so using I, me, my, etc.), which is a red flag for a lot of people. Usually when the author writes themselves directly into the story, it's a sign that it's 1. written by an immature writer, 2. a really indulgent self-insert fic, or a combination of the two. 1. If the fic isn't a self-insert fic (where the reader is directly _in_ the story as a character), then using first person means the reader directly takes on the role of a different character. For example, if it's a Voltron fic, you might directly take the role of Lance; where (for that fic) you _are_ Lance. You talk as Lance, you act as Lance, you think as Lance, you feel as Lance. It's a writing method that's supposed to make the reader sympathetic to the character, (because it forces the reader through the events and emotions that the character would feel), but there are honestly better ways to do it. A lot of people prefer to keep a fic in third person (she, he, they, etc.) because you can still express what a character's thinking and feeling even from that outside perspective. (This is where the stereotype that only new/immature writers use first person comes from. They assume the author is using first person to compensate for the fact that they cannot make a reader empathize without literally plopping the reader into the character's shoes.) Plus, when writers use first person, it also gets dangerously close to self-insert territory. 2. There's nothing inherently wrong with reader-insert stories; it can be fun to plop yourself directly into another universe with characters you like and go on an adventure. However, this is a bit of a slippery slope. Keep in mind that self-insert fics are ultimately wish fulfillment, (typically for both the reader _and_ the writer,) and that can lead to some icky situations. If the writer is indulging in their own fantasy, then that can sometimes lead to out-of-character (OOC) behavior or reducing characters to their stereotypes. So (going back to Voltron) a self-insert fic that is Lance/Reader might have Lance acting OOC or only portray him as a flirtatious f*ckboy in order to have him fit the fantasy situation that the writer is making. (And disclaimer: this happens with fics that are not self-insert as well, in fact it can literally happen _anywhere_ in fiction. But the act of writing with the main goal of being self-indulgent does increase the possibility of this happening.) And for the reader (and also the writer to what is usually a lesser extent), self-insert fics can reenforce a sense of your parasocial relationship with these characters/people. Once again, this isn't a bad thing on its own: literally _every_ relationship you form on the internet is parasocial (despite the connotation around the word). But some people are susceptible to becoming so entangled in the illusion that they have a direct and meaningful relationship with the character or person that it starts to change their behavior. (This what people usually think of as 'parasocial.') This is especially harmful in the fandoms surrounding content creators (singers, artists, writers; your favorite k-pop band, TH-camrs, Twitch streamers, vTubers, etc.) who happen to be real, living people. So if a fan starts to internalize these fantasies about their favorite content creator, they might end up doing and saying things that harm themselves, the community, and the content creators themselves. Again: this is _not_ always the natural progression of self-insert fics, just a risk. You just have to be aware that all of it is parasocial (that you do not actually know these people personally unless _both_ of you have agreed on it), and make sure to respect a content creator's boundaries (like in any relationship). Anyways, with all of that having been said, not all first person fics are badly written; nor are first person fics inherently problematic. But people do tend to recoil when they realize it's in first person (especially if it wasn't explicitly tagged that the reader is one of the characters) for many of these reasons. I hope that answered your question!
Bro I feel that. When she did that bit with the low likes and it was in the 30s I was like "Seriously?! Some of my fics don't even have one! And I spent WEEKS on it!"

Ugh I wrote one chapter of a fic that was a silly idea bordering on parody... five chapters in, there have been a few mental breakdowns, a night vigil for the dead and quite a bit of character development...
I once wrote a drabble series. Once you've limited yourself to exactly 100 words, it gets a lot easier to write four or five times that, and it'salot less pressure to focus on just one scene at a time. It's such an adrenaline rush to be saying "crud, I wrote too much!", and after that, it's easier to connect the drabbles together and flesh them out into a full-fledged story.

Ok, recommendation here: make a document and name it whatever. That's where you put your discarded sentences and paragraphs. If a certain piece of your writing doesn't sit well with the entirety of your story, but you just don't have the heart to delete it, copy and paste it in that document. That way, when you seem to have no idea how to write a certain scene or just need SOMETHING to hit you with inspiration, you can scroll through that document and perhaps reuse a discarded paragraph or two.
@@frogingtum.thecrumbling This is what I do! Most of the time there’s at least one or two phrases/lines of dialogue/descriptions worth reusing or that can be turned into something new so I just dump all discarded passages in a doc called “snippets to be repurposed: * fic title *”

I haven't published my fanfic yet because my Beta Reader hasn't gotten back to me about feedback, and I'm worried they find my writing style to be terrible and didn't bother finishing it, but they don't want to hurt my feelings, so they're not saying anything about it...
I totally get that. If you upload your fics on Ao3, you have the option to orphan your work so it won't be associated with your account/ online persona. I think this helps somewhat in easing the anxiety of the (imaginary) barrage of insults, criticism and judgement.
@@giadaisabella7005 The kudos system is nicer than favorites in my objective opinion, and the ao3 search engine is a lot better (unlimited and specific tags, in particular, make it so much easier to find fanfiction you actually want to read). I am Bluepelt from what I heard, the characters are bland and the pacing isn’t good. The sex parts feel force and not genuine or earned. The biggest reason why people hate fifty shades of gray is because it’s the first openly admitted fanfiction exposed to the mainstream. Meaning because of that movie, most people now associate FanFiction with raunchy and forced sex and romance with no variety.
@@iambluepelt3904 also, toxic and abusive relationships are all that gets shown in that trash fire, but the author still insists it's a perfectly healthy and normal love story. Also, bad rep for the BDSM Community and the sex scenes are just shit.

@@pattychan3941 2:00 what's wrong with this fic
But the act of writing with the main goal of being self-indulgent does increase the possibility of this happening.)
And for the reader (and also the writer to what is usually a lesser extent), self-insert fics can reenforce a sense of your parasocial relationship with these characters/people. (This what people usually think of as 'parasocial.')
This is especially harmful in the fandoms surrounding content creators (singers, artists, writers; your favorite k-pop band, TH-camrs, Twitch streamers, vTubers, etc.) who happen to be real, living people.

I just like to spin it around in my head. The reason people are commenting that is because they want to know more, they’re invested in the story and it means your doing a great job. Could they word it differently and not pester? Yes, but I understand where they’re coming from.
really!? I find it such an honour. its never happened to me, but if people are pestering you, thats means they like your work and they're invested in it. The closest ive got is someone saying "cant wait for the next chapter!" and that motivated me like nothing else.
I can't relate because that has never happened to me oof

Thats why I only comment when I'm drunk or have upvoted/starred whatever book completely (or like have read all their books already)

ah yes, the first person betrayal, never ceases to make me cry after finally finding the perfect fic
Why do people hate First Person so much?
@@DaisyFlow14 makes you feel like it's you, even if you are aware that 1st person character is another character. It does work when it's y/n fanfics but otherwise it just feels too self insert-y and can make ppl cringe.
Me, who much more comfortable on writing first person POV narrative than third person POV: **Sweating nervously**
@@angelicaph483same--💀
@@Its_gettingLateDon't worry, there are at least some fanfictions that are received somewhat well while still being first person. Admittedly the most famous one that I know of was written by an author who had a big following and had previously written several well-received third-person fanfictions. So that probably made a difference. But it still is possible.
Although I might have a bit of bias since I'm also writing in the first person.
I.... Didn't expect to be attacked like this
Same!! 😂. I am SO that person who has WAY too many fanfic ideas!! 😂. And then I'm also that person who just ends up inevitably abandoning _every single fic I start to write..._ 😂🤣!!
Me: This is such a good fic!
Author: I'm sorry for this trashy fic so I am discontinuing it. This is so bad OMGGG JUST SOOOO BAD
Me: *chokes*
im just happy no one seemed to care about my only published fic
i could delete it without feeling bad because no one said they liked it
i didnt like it at all and it only had two chapters when i deleted it
might try rewriting it
This happened with my favorite fic and I just started sobbing. It had so much emotion and it was so beautifully written but the author deleted their account as a whole. 😔
I tend to apologize in my fanfics for having bad grammar or writing skills sometimes, but I still keep those stories for other people to enjoy. It makes me sad when people discontinue or delete their stories because they think its bad.
I finished a book early because I wrote it two years ago and it was HORRIBLE, the only reason i'm keeping it up is bc it has nearly 7k views
Same, I feel your pain. Honestly, it annoys me, because WHY THE FUCK ARE THE MAJORITY OF THE GOOD AUTHORS DISCONTINUING THEIR WRITTEN WORKS?!
Or when dialogue is written like this
Person one: hey
Person two: hey
Like please we have "" for a reason
EXACTLY!
I do remember John Green doing that format in The Fault in Out Stars. So I guess that format can work if the book can survive with it
I agree. It also makes me confused when it's like...
"yo"
"yoyo"
"yoyoyoyoyyo"
like, who's speaking?
@@venus-qt3et I don't know if this is true but if the names are mentioned in the first two dialogue lines, then it is assumed that the characters are having a back and forth when no other names are said in the rest.
unless it a crack fic.

Edit: I literally said in the first chapter of one of the fics (and I quote):
"Hulac shot up. Theron looked worried. The Raginis brother shook as the nightmare replayed in his mind. His husband would die. He couldn't let that happen."
Me: "Nope, nobody gets to read what I write, this is private."

True.
My problem is I think of a ✨perfect✨scene but have no idea how to start or end the fic

I so do that. I write fanfics all the time, and I don't let anybody read them. Maybe someday though if they're good enough.
My mom just asked me that because I wouldn't stop shoving my book cover design in her face.
I have a lot of regrets .

Yeah not bad words or sexual tension (OK a Lil bit just a Lil bit) I am just embarrassed to know all that little stuff that I know besides the x reader that I wrote is just my mom finding out isn't the best thing that can happen

5:46 - But when you're writing fanfiction, it's still another person's character, their baby, can't help but feel you need to respect them some way or another.
Oh my gosh THIS. I was writing a fic with my friend's original character in it and I like- sent them snippets asking if I was writing them right lol
I try to stick to canon or with what au that I try to follow what is either generally accepted in fanon if they have no set personality in canon. but I try to stick to canon reactions or actions if possible.
I actually feel the creators looking over my shoulder as I write their characters. Jhonen Vasquez has taken up permanent residence in my head.
Me: This fanfic is so bad and confusing
Also me: Stays up until 3am to finish it

Because usually it's either a sub par fan fiction that gives you what your looking for but horrible writing or nothing lol.
I stop reading after the first few paragraphs/chapter if the grammar/spelling is bad enough, solely to try and avoid this 😂

I am someone who is writing a fanfic with setting and characters from a franchise. And I gotta say, the struggles of keeping the characters as close to canon as possible is a struggle... and also a way to lose motivation to write. Especially when you're out of the fandom but still want to complete this one fanfic.
