This is me but can I just safely say for the record, the reason I'm like that is because I'm not fond of shipping. I like reading fics that do a good job of showing character development instead of the main plot be hindered by a ship, idk maybe it's just me. I can enjoy when a ship is done right in a fic but most of the time I'm not a fan.

As an ao3 author, sometimes I write fics at school. One girl thought I was making a book. I had to explain what fanfiction was to her. I orphaned my embarrassing smut fics so no one would see the weird tags. I once saw someone reading said smut fic in class. Took everything to make myself not scream in terror

It's funny how my friends who write fanfics were discussing how to write a heavy, emotional scene that would kinda shock the readers + feel pity towards the ml. But didn't include me because they thought I was only a fluff/smut reader🙂
The looks on their face as I described in great detail how I would slowly 'break down' the ML mentally as physically got me laughing so hard afterwards. They were literally shocked to their core. Yet, I sometomes help them with some of these scenes now. 🤣

It's the worst when it says "completed", but the last chapter is author's notice, and they don't even have the decency to put "discontinued" in the summary.
However, it once happened to me, that a fic i started reading in my beginner times stopped updating and after nearly a year of checking it i gave up. Then, a couple years later i randomly clicked on it's bookmark, and saw new chapters recently(like, a few days before) added and i was beyond happy. I was proud to read that fic to completion.

I think each one of us has gone through a "shameless" phase.
I remember I was in a bank reading a fanfic because it was that bomb and two boys were possibly peeping over my phone but I'm not sure...I was too engrossed in that fic.
Fanfics have helped me maintain my high reading level, if only because I can tell when something doesn’t sound right and I think the fic needs a beta. I’m a binge reader, and I am constantly reading and looking for more fics to read. I have had sleepless nights when in the grip of good fics.

I'm just realising now that I may have traded one addiction for another when I went from videogames to reading fics. To be fair I started out absolutely BINGEING Wuxia and Xianxia novels (they scratched my adventurous power fantasy itch so damn good), but then one day I got recommended to a fanfic reddit and the rest was history. I accidentally read a vore doujinshi once. Vore, guro, smegma, and scat are things I like to avoid.
i have recently found a new OTP for a new fandom and i am SCRAPING THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL. there are around 6 fics on wattpad (the only site i know how to use) with this pairing and like 3 oneshot books. i have seen unimaginable things with this pairing and i am eating it up like FUCKING baby food.
I know the pain. Fifty fics in my favorite pairing and it’s all written by illiterate monkeys. But I still read that slop because I am desperate.
Have been tossing a few ideas of my own to try re-injecting life into it. But the burden of expecting oneself to surpass all those who have tried before them weighs heavily on my shoulders. Thus far I have gotten a single fic out and despite my pride in it, I feel it was… incomplete. A thing of whimsy, and not my magnum opus, as I hoped it would be. Now, my second attempt is shaping up to be a Frankenstein’s monster of multiple ideas forced together.
Sorry for the mad raving. Don’t know what came over me.

And I get super emotionally invested cause I usually *am* overly sensitive, *specially* when it comes to characters I love, -so, like an idiot, I proceed to read Angst and hurt myself T^T Why am I like this--
And I said Vanilla reader, because I literally *CANNOT* with *anything* explicit in *that* kind of way, like Creepypasta or Danganronpa (Both fandoms I've been in/am in) type gory Angst? Fine, anything even remotely related to the deed? *NO-*

Especially if it's a long one. I just finished one that was 700 pages, written beautifully, and was everything I could have asked for between these 2 characters. When I finished it I just sat there for a few minutes thinking "Well now what the hell am I supposed to do.
?"
The story was so good that there was no way I could start another one, and the story was so complete that they lived out their lives together until the end. So I was emotionally drained. It took me a couple of days to start reading another fanfic after that.

The only fanfics I like are the ones where they either make some side story that could exist in the original work and is faithful to the original characters and story. Or the ones where they change the main story (either partially or completely) but improve upon it and make it "better" to me.
The main example I actually have is "Supernatural" and "Teen Wolf" for both.
Except for seasons 12-15, I don't really like Supernatural fanfics that change what happened in the story. Like, ignoring the Destial and all the weird ships and stuff, I only really like the side stories that allow me to spend more time with some of my favourite characters that could exist.
As for Teen Wolf, again trying to ignore all the weird ships and stuff, I only really like the stories that basically rewrite the entire show. Because I always thought the original show was dragged down by lacklustre writing. It was really nice to see fanfics that basically addressed so many of the problems I had with the show and gave me an idea of the true potential the show had. Kinda sad to say it that way, but it's something I do enjoy.

I’m only picky about certain things, if you’re writing style and grammar is really confusing for me, no matter how much I like the plot, I have to give it up
If you’re writing style captivated me and draws me in and I find it awesome, even if I’m not that invested in plot you’ll definitely still get praise
It’s important for grammar, I see things that are messed up that I learned in 7th grade English literature
Examples of some issues:
No paragraphs - like really, you should know better, it hurts my eyes to look at the wall of text in front of me
Repetitive words - please don’t say “said” every time a character says something, there’s less emotion, please try a thesaurus I’ve used one and it really helps when you’re stumped
Grammar and spelling - I know these are easy to mess up but if you’re unsure, have someone proofread to make sure your spelling, grammar, and punctuation are good and that it doesn’t hurt your brain to read, if you have nobody to proofread, get out a dictionary if you’re that worried, look some stuff up, read it yourself a few times and make sure that you like it

Rebecca R I always thought 20k words was a pretty short story 😂 I’m so used to reading things close to or over 100k that I don’t even think about how regular books usually are about 20-30k words and I finish them within 2-3 hours if that.

Im the vanilla reader, it makes me look at the characters differently if I read about them in that way.
