My Dad bought brand new in 1970 a Kingswood HG station wagon which was ordered and delivered with a 308 V8 trimatic transmission, rear LSD and front disc brakes. Drove it around when I got my Licence , loved it. My mate had a 202 LJ torana 2 door, He turbo'd , had a four speed manual tranny, we had to fit a holden one tonner clutch in so the it wouldn't slip when accelerating.
With the non-synchro boxes you didn’t have to come to a complete stop. All you had to do was get the revs in the right spot and double de-clutch to get it into to first.
The 1970 Toranas were TAs for the four cylinder and LC for the six cylinder. Before that there was the first Torana, the HB. A really rare performance version was called the Brabham after F1 champion, Australian Jack Brabham. They had a little badge on the mudguard with the word ‘Brabham’. Car Badge collectors go nuts over them.
I had LC GTR , an until Rod Hadfield ,made Crown & Celica conversion plates , I had to put up with those crap Opel boxes (out of 2 litre German sedan), even treated gently the front seal would blow , or lose 2nd an 4th ,as for early Torana's/Viva's less said the better IMO,
That XU1 looks like an LJ. I am still dirty that I got rid of mine. Had a green LJ GTR XU1 back around '94. Had the bathurst tank, globe wheels and a black interior with no working air or windows. The smell of unburnt petrol when city driving and the sounds of suction coming from the triple stromberg carburettors was pure joy. It was almost completely original except for a transplanted 202 (still bored out to 208). Paid $6500 for it, traded it for an EB falcon. Hindsight is a great teacher.
Love these junkyard videos but I cant wait for the return of the bilo EF
The bilo mobile will be back soon don’t worry!
1966 HR Panel VAN. Apart from working my girlfriend, my efforts went into radicalising it in paint, motor, carbs, Splatt Dragway rims, arch, curtains, headers and disc brake front that came from a later Holden.
Holden never called it the FX, That's what people called it after the the FJ was released. The model was called the 48-215
I believe the term originated from the GMH engineers who used FX on the title of drawings for the update Air ride model components. It caught on with used car salesmen later on and pretty much was used ever since.
I did see 48-215 thrown around when I was researching them. FX is just easier to say and I think people recognise it better
My dad had a HR Holden Premier with a 186S bolted to a Toyota Celica 5 speed manual. Power drum brakes and a big Holley 385cmf I believe. His mate took it out drag racing and came back and he said it's the fastest HR in Ballarat and Stawell. Got written off in 79 apparently by a taxi in Melbourne. He then got a 68 HK Monaro GTS 186s.
When Rod Hadfield from Castlemaine , started making conversion plates , it changed for the better , Celica and early crown 4 speeds were bulletproof , even if swapping 3 on the tree or those bloody awful Opel 4 speeds out of 186s Monaros , made for 2 litre German sedans , so much room in tranny tunnel ,you could remove them with 2 hands , the cast early Crown ones from 2.6 litre six , then Celica boxes convinced people that these boxes were over engineered ,Cast Crowns were as good as saginaws
It’s a workshop. Not a junkyard.
I know I am dating myself, but I remember as a kid a lot of these cars being common and have ridden in many of them. Good to see some being preserved.
Although I was a Holden bloke from birth, my Dad was a Ford bloke, so I had to stay in the closet for most of my life on my preference for the other side of the field. Dad did have one aberration to the constant stream of Brit and Oz Fords that lined our driveway - a 1969 HT GTS Monaro in a colour very similar to Le Mans blue with a black interior. I was about 7 at the time and it was the absolute favourite of mine through the years of Cortinas, Escorts and Falcons.
However, I was to get the last laugh on that one, because many years later, I was out near the homestead in a company VK Calais, so stopped in for a coffee - brazenly parking the Holden in full view where the neighbours could see it (Dad would never allow a Holden to park in the driveway and definitely not right outside the front door and used to tell his mates to 'park that shit up the road somewhere' so he didn't have to look at it. Dad saw the Calais, looked at me, looked at the car, looked at me - so I chucked him the keys.
He tore off up the street like a mad bastard, chirping the tyres as the tortured auto changed to second and that 308 crying out in mortal terror (I mean, the car was being driven by one of the bosses and had only done about 35,000km and I knew for a fact that it had never been driven in anger). What's more, when the old bloke got back from around the block, he line-locked the poor thing and took it to about 5000rpm, then let the brakes off and left a lovely #11 right outside the house. After another trip around the block, he drove it in, parked it back where it had been and said "I'll make that coffee now", like he'd just started it and moved it forward a few feet - not taken several miles off its life!.
He kept looking at it thoughtfully while we sipped the coffee and yarned....couldn't keep his eyes off the thing. A couple of weeks later, I pulled in the drive in my own car and where Mum's Corolla wagon had sat, there was this lovely mid-blue VK with a wing on the back. I walked over to it and sure enough - he'd found a manual Blue Meanie and bought it. The holy grail for a VK lover, the SS Group A, complete with all the trimmings and everything in its place as it should be. I heard a whistle from the ranch slider and turned as he threw me the keys, saying "...and if you drive it like I drove your bosses car a couple of weeks ago, I wouldn't bother pulling back into the drive, boy!" I laughed and then went for a cruise in the beast....although once I got a couple of streets away, I did bury the boot in the carpet as far as it would go...and the car did not disappoint.
From there on, Dad was a Holden bloke. When he passed away at the young age of 47, his mates wanted to drape his coffin with a Ford flag, but I wouldn't let them! They said "He was a Ford bloke for many years before he started driving a Holden, mate". I said "Yeah - but unlike you blokes, he learned the error of his ways and made amends!"
Nowadays, I look at old Fords, old Holdens - heck, anything older than 40 years - and it doesn't matter what it is, if the bloke who owns it loves it enough to keep it on the road and clocking up miles, I'll stand there and chat to him about it and hear the car's story. That XU1 was an absolute peach, mate, as was pretty much everything in the workshop (with the possible exception of the Saab!).
I'd have loved to get my hands on a Torana or two when I had the chance many years ago, but things never lined up quite right to get them and they slipped away. Now they are silly money, so I doubt I will ever own one - or even drive one again. Also had the chance to buy a one owner 102k mile 1972 Monaro LS in gold with a black vinyl roof, bucket seats / full console, factory GTS dash, aircon, electric windows...all for $9k. But that was about 35 years ago and I couldn't get the dealer to trade my current vehicle for enough to swing the deal. Doubt I'll own one of them either now! Ah well. I've been able to drive a lot of the old Holdens over the years - never driven an FC or FX, but I would love an FE or FB as a cruiser. And you mentioned an A9X replica a mate of yours has - yeah, love them too. Driven the road-going 6-cyl variant of the coupe in auto, but not the SS sadly. They're getting thin on the ground now - hardly ever see one at shows any more either.
ANyway - thanks for this glorious video. All the best.
If you're not sure what it is, look at the compliance plate. If it hasn't been played with that will tell you what model it is.
Chris and Barry are good blokes👍🏻
I had an ek and fb Ute. The ek was so straight. 95% Complete not running, I paid $600! From bubbs holden spares, Everton pal, 1995. I nearly finished it, but I moved 3000kms n had to sell them. One of my only regrets in life. Which is pretty good!👍🎯🍻🇦🇺
Fun facts the Holden red motors were around as late as the late 70’s, making it to the VB Commodore. Great motor but upgraded to the blue motor in the VC and then black motor in the 84 VK. Then replaced by RB 30 in the VL.
I thought the LC only came out in the GTR (186 bored out 60 though to 192) then the GTR XU1 came out in the LJ (202 bored out 60 thou to 208); any Holden heads able to clarify this one for me as I’m a blue oval bloke?
Good episode man, great to see some old holden shit being loved. For those who speak of i had or my mate had or dad had, well, you know what you can do. You can wish all you like and that you never sold it stories are history. Cheers.
People are funny like that, everyone says “I should have kept that car” yet in reality they either had to trade it for the next one or didn’t have the space to keep it! And if they had these cars would be everywhere and not worth nearly as much! 😂😂
@@lachlanwoods3940 True mate. If you really want to you can have again. I own a 1973 Holden ute, it's shit, but i love it, coming from a Ford enthusiast, i'm not racial toward any classic car.
@@JAStheACE 100%, doesn’t have to be a $100k car if you love it and enjoy it, I have a few old fords, nothing special just cars I wanted when I was younger and can only now afford at 50 odd! 😂🤷♂️
@@lachlanwoods3940 we're in the same age group mate. I hung onto 3 cars for nearly 15 yrs busted broke all the bullshit, but now getting back into them. Work hard dream big and never give up. If they are survivor cars all the better. No fancy pants needed to have fun.
My first car was a HQ Kingswood in the same colour as that XU1.
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Great content there Nathan.
Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated mate!
I bought a 49 Fx in 1970, had been garaged for 7 years, for $ 200. Wish I still had it😂
As a Gen X'er. I grew up loving these old Holdens. I've owned FB, HR, HQ, HX and WB varieties... But now I'm into Aussie Fords.
Holy shit, This is fantastic, is this shop based in Melbourne, or else where?
had a hq ss monaro sedan red and black in 1981, cost 2900, and a 73 lj gtr xu1 in yellow and black in 1983, cost, 3800, the xu1 is the car i miss, sold it in late 83 as i wrapped my mates lc xu1 around a pole in brisbane, and had to sell mine to pay for rebuild of my mates xu1....
HQ SS was not a Monaro. It was just an ‘SS’. GMs wanted to see if a sports pack in a four door would fly in the market. It did and so the four door GTS was born.
I'll be giving Chris a call 👍👍
Great watch.
Can’t go past a good old Holden
The older Fords aren’t to bad either but a good old Holden are the shit mate
Holdens and Fords of the mid 60s until late 70s were much of a muchness. Ford’s were a little bit heavier on petrol. Valiants guzzled petrol like a drunk.
I wonder if there are any Tesla wreckers in Australia?
This could go AUS wide... Kind of like Spanian "Into the hood" but "Into the wreckers" 😅😆
Legit what I thaught
That is the plan for sure! Would be a dream
Hopefully without the junkie gronks acting like children
If it's a true LC gtr xu1 it would be a 192, triple carbs I'm pretty sure LJ was a 202
Wrong…LCs XU1s came out from Holden with 186. The 192 was a created using a bore out kit. Same with the LJ 202 from Holden. A bore out kit to 208 was available as an aftermarket.
My dad got a hz premier 308 super mint green
Nice one
I have a blue 48-215 fx
Australian made and Australian saved
It’s a shame Holden’s are no longer built
Yes Joe Hockey should be ashamed , said "Govt. subsidises too much" killed Manufacturing , meanwhile Germans continued Govt.subsidies ,keeping jobs (an the spinoff ones) in Germany ,they were investing in jobs , Benz, BMW ,Volkswagen group No One wanted after WW2, who ends up owning Rolls , Howard an Hockey did Australian manufacturing huge disservice driving in last nail ,tens of thousands of jobs , with crap like at 64 yrs ,42 yrs assembly line we'll retrain you as typist
What about the 192JP🤔
Sorry it was a 179HP not a 173 HP
The 179HP was in the EH and HD. The rare performance versions were the EH S4 and HD X2. The EH was the more performance orientated with the later HD being a bit of a slap dash effort from Holden who for some reason went soft on racing in the mid 60s.
Mate, I’m really trying to support the team here but fuck, a fraction of research wouldn’t kill a bloke..
I know what you mean but his videos are lightly entertaining and sometimes interesting. I think he said he was born in 2000 so it’s not unusual for the young whipper snappers. We just gotta lighten up a bit sometimes and let it slide
😂😂😂 kinda hard to research when I didn’t even know what cars were gonna be there but I did say at the start of the video that I’m not well versed in old holdens
@@nathanpaykin Mate you’re doing a good job keep doing what you’re doing 👍
That oldskool Cadbury purple Torana is 👌👌👌
Its called Plumb Dinger 🤙
