I had an 88 735i it was totally reliable,I did all my own work, which was just maintenance and a heater core..It was written off by tourists in a van ,I walked away they did not..
That's fair! But on the other hand a '67 Mercedes 220 W110 or especially the next model year '68 Mercedes E-Klasse W114 was a lot more "advanced" than the Holden. The Mercedes came with overhead cam engine, optional Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, 5-speed manual, possibly even vacuum-operated central locking & power windows, and so on. So there was a difference there in extra features and technology over the Holden, if you were willing to pay extra for the Mercedes.
My question is, how are these car companies still in business?. Manufacturing unreliable, depreciating rubbish, I guess making money off people with low self esteem and need materialism to give them self worth. So sad to see.
A lot of people simply refuse to buy anything other than a German luxury car or to a lesser extent Swedish, Italian or British, luxury car. For them a Lexus LX570 simply doesn't have the credibility and status of a Mercedes GLS, BMW X7 or Range Rover. That the Mercedes or Range Rover becomes troublesome and expensive to fix as it ages is even seen as a boon if anything, as it stops older examples from remaining on the roads and reducing the image and status of the vehicle.
With Italian cars though, I think the Alfa Romeo 166 or Maserati Quattroporte (both notoriously unreliable) or so on is just the best they can do. It's an Italian car after all. It's the Germans who purport to be great engineers and should be able to do better IMO.
I never would have given how hard they are to use and repair. A crappy old Aussie car was far better to own. Japanese are way better than any euro trash
A lot of people get in the cycle of upgrading their (for example) Audi every 5 years, just as the old one starts to get troublesome. You'd think they'd switch to another brand -- but they do not!
Over here in England my mate always buys BMW X3 he doesn't do many miles a year but he constantly seems to have a problem with them. I very foolishly bought a RRover sport it didn't cost me a lot in maintenance over 3 years but it wasn't without small problems, I eventually sold it as it was developing a lot of expensive problems. It's funny how a lot of expensive luxury cars develop problems some very expensive problems that really should not happen when you spend 70 to 80 thousand pounds buying the thing.
It was around the early to mid 2000s when Mercedes BMW appointed bean counters to run the show and clashed with engineer's .Thus using inferior build materials designed to last just till the warranty period
What they realised in the 2000’s was that a large amount of their customers upgraded their car every 3-5 years Why make a car last for 10-15 years we it’s only benefiting the used car buyer?
1 thing I always say about Range Rovers and Disco's... you see them very often on tilt trays or broken down in a steaming heap on the side of the road...on the other hand, how many patrols or landcruisers do you see in the same situation? Answer...not many.! Enough said!
The Australian heat gets them, especially taunting on the coolant plastics they fall apart and a lot of mechanics won't get their fingers burnt working on them, we don't have the used import scene like NZ so that keeps car prices higher, so good ones stay high as they are rare.
It's very variant specific! Some engines are fairly reliable (e.g., VW 1.9 PD, BMW N52 naturally aspirated), others are nightmares (e.g., VW 1.4 118TSI twin-charger, BMW N54 twin-turbo).
I love it when people trash talk a car or a brand they've never owned, ive had three modern Jags, a 2012 XF, a 2015 a 2017 XF and a 2015 XJ that my Dad left to me, the only one to have any sort of an issue was the 2012, but the issue was the DPF, but all DPF's are inherently problematic so thats not Jaguars fault. The other 2017 XF even went through flash floodwater and the battery in the boot was fully submerged, and it still never missed a beat. If that's unreliable, I'm ok with that.
I'd be happy with that level of "unreliability" too haha. I've been a Volvo-only owner since 93 and they've made plenty of garbage. There's no way in the world I'd own any Volvo after a 900 series for a start, except I think there was an S80, S90, or maybe it was V80... something like that, which was rear wheel drive - but I think they have to be imported from the UK. The 850 was east-west engine and FWD and was, and still is, both ugly AND shit - often breaking down. The 700 series had mostly the same engine as 140, 200, and 900 series but the interior was unmitigated garbage. Not only did they look tired just a few months from new due the way the seats are stitched (like a row of frankfurters sewn together at different heights), their interior plastics would crack/break/crumble. There were a couple/few years where 240s (and maybe 740s too?) fitted rubbish "green" wiring whose insulation would crumble off the wires causing a myriad of electrical short circuit faults - so that years later there were online businesses selling replacement wiring harnesses to destinations around the planet, either taken from older or newer cars, or made new from scratch. Every 240, both sedan and wagon, are painful to sit in the back seat - with wheel arches that stick into halfway across and into your back forcing you to sit in a twisted position. The 940 moved the rear wheel arches and rear seat apart to get rid of this. The earlier series - forget it's number - 300 maybe? It had a renault engine, looked like the first Ford Laser hatchback pussboxes, and was so small I still had my knees jammed into my face after moving the seat back even though I'm only 5'6". All newer models after the 900s went FWD, got rid of the red block engine, are just as crap as every other modern car. e.g. The 440 I think it is, a lot of people like those because it's like driving a zippy rally car, but you have to double or triple the price you pay to fix everything that will be wrong with it. In Volvo forums they always say to fire a parts canon at the entire suspension for a start. Other models I forget the numbers of, S's and V's and X's... you have to buy ones with a specific gearbox only, or you'll be paying another $7K to $12K for a gearbox IF you can find one because every other person who bought the wrong one has snapped them up. Even the 700 series (again) had an "Aisin" (spelling?) gearbox that will BLOW UP if you just rev it in neutral). I haven't bothered to remember models after the 940/850, because every time a new model came out, I'd soon be reading in forums a stream of faults. China bought Volvo at some which extinguished hope of Volvo producing anything good again. Then they sold it again which revived some hope, but it never eventuated - until a couple of years back they announced they'd only build electric cars (morons). That's change again, but I still hear nothing resembling the Volvo that died long ago with the 850. Anything FWD should be driven into the ocean for the insurance and left there to rot. My current 1991 240GL (34 years old - 35 later this year) I bought a decade ago with 20,000km. I've owned 4x 240s, only ever change oil, brake pads, and tyres, and not one has left me stranded. If I buy another Volvo it's going to be a 940GL wagon, because while I adore my 240GL, I hate its paraplegic-creating rear wheel arches/seat that means no-one else wants to enjoy it with me. I'd rather spend $40K restoring something from the ground up, than the modern crap Volvo and every other manufacturer, has made since.
