Scottie, im thinkin Renesis 13B .. as series 2 motor.. They are still new enought to exist as crate motors .. usually with 6 speed gearbox, that way its still modern & reliable.
@@askannav2094 Lmao a Renesis reliable? No. An FD-era 13B with all the pollution shit sorted out and a smaller single turbo on it for ~400 horsepower would be VERY streetable and still quick in a car this light.
I said CA20DET on the last video - people call them "forklift engines" but you can build them for a reliable streetable 350 flywheel horsepower, which is what, 5x stock 4cyl Torrie power?
I think the Barina motor is the way to go, being an opel/vauxhall motor and the Torana afterall began as a Vauxhall Viva it seems fitting. Plus the Barina doesn't seem to have a place on the channel. Be different in 2022!! Love your work guys, keep it up 👍
I'm all for a good Rotary and the sound you can't beat. But they've been swapped into just about everything. I have not seen a Opel powered torana in my lifetime. My vote is Opel for sure!!!
As I originally said, the vauxhall /opel C20 engine turbo'd and set the rev limit at 10000 rpm. It'll be a screamer. Or put in the 4wd system from the 90s vauxhall calibras/cavalier turbos.
My vote is the Toyota 3RZ. Close 2nd is a K24 Both make good power, and are not the usual LS/BARRA/2J cookie cutter swap that you see under every other bonnet. Whatever you choose, I’ll still watch every episode 😊
twin hayabusa turbo (front and rear mounted with gear linkage joining the two) motors? Easy 800hp plus with 4wd. They fit in anything as they’re tiny and who’s got a Torana that revs to 11k? Plenty of tuning parts available too. It would be mental.
All you need to know about them is they use a lot of oil and fuel, don't make any power until they hit serious RPMs, spew massive amounts of CO2 & carcinogens, need to be rebuilt at least 3 times as often as a piston engine. They are a curiosity at best, an engine for contrarians at worst. This is why no other auto manufacturer other than NSU (who went broke because of their RO80 rotary) and Mazda have ever bothered with them. Also anyone who thinks the noise they make is nice is certifiably bonkers. Braaat! Braaat! braat! braat! Sounds like a flatulent elephant to me. Still it'd be an interesting project especially for a track only car, & it's not my car, so I'm all for it too.
There's a million tradeys out there with a 3RZ or 2TR-FE in their Hilux workmate. Do an engine that is relevent for all the tradies, but not usually played with . All the best with the decision 🍻
Put a Dorito in it for sure !!! 13b PP 5 speed with a nice big snail on the side for good measure. It"ll fit, fly and put smiles on all the kids faces 🙂
I reckon between a rotary and the 2J, I don't think you've done much with rotaries on the channel so a whole project on them would be great. I was also thinking of the K swap. But Im not really sure why but I just stuck between the 2J and the Rotorie. Now that I think more about it I think it's a better option for a rotary, small, sounds good, very fun. So that's a rotary vote for me!
the trolvo already has the 2j motor in it, so i agree aswell a rotary enigne is simple and easy to put into that small engine bay without too much work either....
The move away from just considering V8's is refreshing and probably the reason why your content is so popular. Street Machine celebrates all in the car community. It's time. Putting in a 20B and collaborating with the dorito experts we have right here on our door step is a no brainer. You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!
I think the Opel C20XE would be a very cool and fitting swap actually, given the car's origins. Would love to see that, but i'll be looking forward to whatever you guys decide!
It'd be nice to see the C20XE out of the Barina/Corsa fired in. But can't help but think what a 3SGE Beams out of a Altezza would be like in it? Maybe a more realistic choice, as I bet XE's aren't exactly common in 'Straya and getting go fast bits wouldn't be as easy either. Can be Turbo'd later on and come with a RWD gearbox. That said, I'm not too fussed with what you fit. As it's gonna be fun watching Scotty fitting it 👍.
Anyone saying JZ didn't watch TSF 😅 I know you said no 308, but the old iron lion does seem to be coming back in vogue. Maybe a budget VN headed 355, with a 200 shot of dope backed by a TH350?
K Swap makes sense, or alternatively a 2.5 Duratec (high revving NA, Mountune style). Be great to see a Pro Tourer style approach to the Torana over the usual pro street/drag thing.
Or a NA rotary that revs to the moon, keeping the car light and agile, maybe more of a hill climb car or circuit car instead of the normal drag builds :)
Quad peripheral port rotor. Another engine to throw into the mix is the 4G63 mitsi or stroker version. Very capable motor Golby’s sell a 2.2 stroker kit capable of 1100hp and 10k rpm ready to go
3RZ almost the only engine still out there that is affordable in its native form. Lots of aftermarket engine and gearbox support for it too. Rotaries mega expensive these days, having to buy a complete engine, and then rebuild it with new parts and some go fast internal bits and pieces you’re looking $12k+ at least. Hurt it bad enough and throw it all away and have to spend another $12k… I do have one sitting on the garage floor collecting dust though haha
Definitely not LS or Barra, or even JZ, I would like.to see something definitely different since you have a complete blank canvas. Rotors have been done. I like the idea of others of the Ecoboost or a Cosworth. If you weren't so against the commodore V6 I'd go that. I put a VS V6 turbo in my 77 Corolla with a 5 sp and it hooks up and shoots better then some supercharged V8s I've given a go.
In the 90's one of our mates had the same car running a 13b then later and blown 13b and was like green and known locally in Penrith as the Rotana.....very tough little car
I like the sound of going a rotary! Also if you’re just gonna get rid of the old running gear , i’d love to buy it off you , i’ve got a Hb torana , but sadly no spare steering columns :(
Suggestion way out of left field, but what about a Buick/Rover 3.5 V8? There would have to be stacks of Range Rovers rusted out in backyards? They’re small, alloy, light and with decent internals can make really good power. Plus they sound brilliant.
I like the Barina motor option best. A 2JZ or RB would be cool too but keep its roots together. As others have said the Torana started as a Vauxhall Viva.
My vote is either 4G63T or C20XE. There's a great 4G63 RWD facebook page with lots of info, and heaps of rwd conversion parts and bellhousings are available these days. If you use the C20XE from the Barina, you can use a gearbox from a late TF Rodeo with the C22NE engine, or a 4 cylinder RA Rodeo with the C24SE, they are the same engine family and the sump/pickup may be useful aswell, they're a rear hump.
It all comes down to what sort of times and power needed to achieve those times and then look at your budget. i have made 420hp at the wheels from a stock bottom end sr reliably so that would be my choice. again comes down to your budget and expected track times.
RB 30 sounds like the engine you're looking for. But DON'T go twin cam, the SOHC make plenty of power and the twin cam conversion ads a lot of extra things to go wrong! ask me how I know haha
I would love to see the Opel C20xe go into the torana, I have plenty of experience with this motor owning a Calibra and my own big block Barina plus a spare C20xe & the turbo variant C20LET, I can also tell you the box from a 2.4L rodeo (C24SE) will bolt up to the engine as the gen2 motors shared the same bolt pattern and that’s a common box and you can source here in Australia
Rotor would be awesome! But I reckon the Opel motor would be cool and you already have it so big plus there. Maybe an RB20det surely would be the cheapest RB of the lot.
As someone who owns a turbo 6 gtr I'd love to see something completely new that nobody else has done. Something like a V6 turbo diesel from a navara or amarok or maybe a turbo hayabusa engine
Whatever you do, NO BARRA PLEASE! I LOVE the Barra and I'd love to have one here in the US, but in Australia I'm getting tired of seeing them swapped into everything.
Agreed but you gotta realize shit here is expensive so we tend to go for the cheaper options and green top barras can be picked up for 400 bucks and are capable of 700hp+ for as little as 8k in comparison a set of aftermarket heads for like a 350 chev are around 5 6k.
Audi 07K RS3 motor would be cool too, definitely out of the box and 5 cylinders sound good wild. Even a built 4JJ1 or 1KD/KZ would be cool. Plenty of bits out there to build them too
Vauxhall’s red top is a beast of an engine and would be really cool in a retro tuning style car. But my vote would be for the rotary you just cannot beat the noise of a bridge ported three or four rotor motor at idle 😎
You won't hear me utter these words to often Scotty 😂 but I reckon stay with the 4cyl theme. Have a look at theToyota 3RZ...talk to the Hoff (Nugget Garage) or maybe an ecoboost from a mustang...should be pretty easy finding a donor.
If you struggle to find 1. You can trap a mustang in the wild very easily. Have a small group of expendable people, also known as the bait, gather on a nearby sidewalk. If you're unable to acquire said individuals, mannequins will do in a pinch. Now using another vehicle with an obnoxiously loud exhaust, slowly circle the block driving past the bait, while revving the vehicle. This will help lure the mustang in to the trap, enticing and exciting the driver in to a frenzy. Allow a minute for the driver to fully commit and voila! 1 freshly wrecked donor mustang...now the owner being in a state of shock, will take any help/money offered to remove the vehicle as quickly as possible, wishing to avoid the police, further embarrassment regarding their driving prowess and not wanting to be a part of the next 'mustang driver mega crash compilation' on TH-cam. 😂😂😂
A Volkswagen W8 from the Passat?… It’s not such a crazy idea, it’s compact, pretty light and would be completely unique. Orrr even the VR6 out of the Golf, which would be even more compact, unique and potentially easier to find. I dunno I’m all about the VW ideas.
For a while GM offered the Ecotec 2.0L DOHC Turbo as a crate engine with a six speed box included. We got that engine in the ZB Commodore, figure out the box and get the crate engine control setup, golden
Something different! I'd live to see a C20LET setup! Didn't even know these were a thing! You've got it there ready to go. Don't go rotary. Been done too many times!
They cost SO MUCH these days, whereas the CA motors out of the lower-model S13 Silvias are a dime a dozen at import wreckers, and they can be built to make good power quite cheaply.
@@ChristopherHallett CA wasn't out of " lower models" it's the older motor and were only replaced because they were more expensive to make. The Sr was a cheaper mass produce design.
Love the build Scotty, I have a LS powered LX but I think you need a later model V6 single turbo, like a Honda J series V6 or a Nissan VQ V6 then a cheap eBay turbo, they both make huge power and are low buck wreaker motors 🤷♂️
Go the Chook Cooker option, please tho, make it a street car, engineered and rego. Show the build process including the engineer etc. This is "Street Machine" not "towed to a drag strip"
Iv seen a couple toranas with 2jz in them and my mates dad has a rb26/30 in his lj. I think a boosted 13b would be great to put in it cause it’s a little different
My vote would be a twin turbo Honda J32/J35/J38 SOHC V6 with a RWD 6 speed manual. The K series is a GREAT engine and they make alot of horsepower and torque, but the Honda V6s have displacement along with torque and are plenty capable of making 500 whp on 10-12 lbs of boost. I made 502 whp with my J32A (3.2L) with a Garrett GTS3582 turbo and that was at 10.2 psi on 93 octane pump gas.
Well- No LS, no Barra, no JZ, 308/304 been done a million times... Maybe a V6 Qaud cam from like a Camry/ Kluger or such (Prado V6 is a 4lt), or a rev happy 4 banger from something with a turbo
The 2J would certainly hammer. I was thinking 2 other combo's - 1) 2 x 13B rotary's. One behind the other with turbo's - High rev's, converter, auto. 2) Old school. Street machine did a piece on a 4.4 litre alloy Rover V8 years ago, bored and/or stroked to 5 litres. All alloy so light weight, bang a turbo or 2 on it, injection...Light weight with V8 goodness.
What about doing up a blue or black 202 for it and taking out to the track after every few mods done. By the end of the build stroke and turbo or supercharge it. Aim for the 10's with it and making a little challenge for you blokes.
What about a Vr6 from a golf, V5 from a Bora or a 5 cylinder from a Volvo. They make great noises and take boost. Or left of field, a V6 from a Cayenne?
If your thinking about a c20let engine. Go for a Saab b204 engine they come standard turbo charged and basically same as a c20let put have a chain instead of a belt
New meets old, I like the idea of the Barina engine. As stated they can make good power, it's not a commonly used engine in Aus (I'm getting a vibe that you want something unique). 2J gets used in a lot of conversions, just like LS and Barra.
a turbo 202 red top with EFI would be cool but a pain to put in but i reckon aYB ford sierra Cosworth engine from an RS500 if you can find one and turbo it
Either K swap or the rotary would both be great engines for this car and no major mods to the chassis/body for either engine. Although unless you know where to get a rotary cheaply they’re almost as expensive as a LS….mainly 13B a little less for the 12A
On the same lines as the barina, go for a 2.0 Duratec out of a focus. Guys in the UK use them in old escorts and make great power. I have an 08 you can have if you do, less than 100000k on it, apart from sunburnt paint and needing a jump start it's good to go. And I'm pretty local to you. Missus upgraded to a larger kid hauler during early lockdown so it's been parked ever since. Plus you'd be doing me a favour, 1 less unreg car to move everytime I mow
I’m team Rotary would love to see that especially boosted

@@jungofett yeah Even a na rotary would be great, no need for a turbo
Especially on a light body
Something different! I'd live to see a C20LET setup! Didn't even know these were a thing! You've got it there ready to go. Don't go rotary. Been done too many times!
My first thought was K series, but I'm leaning towards turbo charged rotary, would fit beautifully!
you could put in a AH Astra Turbo engine Z20LER, or the Ecoboost 4 banger out of an FG falcon
I'd love to see a K swap engine converted to rear drive configuration with the engineering associated to make it work
Check out Taylor rays videos on TH-cam his done it im not a 4banger fan but it's cool
Bill hincher does plenty fb , youtube it. Glide /th400 with a K rocks
Ever considered doing a Z32SE V6 in Nth Sth config Scotty? I did once own a ZC Vectra (if you hadn’t guessed already) and those things are nuts!
Maybe an sr20t makes decent power with a few mods
They cost SO MUCH these days, whereas the CA motors out of the lower-model S13 Silvias are a dime a dozen at import wreckers, and they can be built to make good power quite cheaply.
Sr20s are shit . K series all the way
@@ChristopherHallett CA wasn't out of " lower models" it's the older motor and were only replaced because they were more expensive to make.
100% agree. Make ut a street car.
Built with rod's, pistons and valve springs. Way more potential.
The 2.4ltr 6cyl Datsun 240k SSS motor with a stage 3 fuel injection kit. It's old school keeping with the Torana's age.
Come on guys, go a 13b rotary! Its currently a 1300cc, 13b's are 1300cc. It makes sense.
Just need the shell for full racing cage, 4 link 9" & blowen small block?
Convert it to AWD and put a boxer engine in it :D
Anything but Barra and ls
I like the rotation idea
Well- No LS, no Barra, no JZ, 308/304 been done a million times...
Maybe a V6 Qaud cam from like a Camry/ Kluger or such (Prado V6 is a 4lt), or a rev happy 4 banger from something with a turbo
2GR Power. Cheap, reliable and heap of aftermarket parts available!
Scotty, I’ve got a Nissan ca18det bottom end you can have if your intetested
Scotty and EV have the paramedics ready 🤣
No matter the engine it will be great viewing keep up the good work.
The 2J would certainly hammer. I was thinking 2 other combo's -
1) 2 x 13B rotary's.
Just for something completely different drop a massive superbike engine in it. 🤣
Hey Scotty, love the old school Torrie! What about an Astron 2600 turbo! About 130kw and loads of potential to push it hard! Cheers
Go Dorito power!! ... reminds me of a green Torana with a rotor in it from back in the day.
Team Dorito ... had an anglia back in the day with a 10a . Is one of my many sales i have regretted over the years
What about doing up a blue or black 202 for it and taking out to the track after every few mods done. By the end of the build stroke and turbo or supercharge it. Aim for the 10's with it and making a little challenge for you blokes.
Put a bmw n63 with upgraded valve seals/stems and a zf 8 speed
Cheap also because your a mechanic that can do valves yaself :)
VQ series Nissan V6?
The turbo 5 pot out of the XR5 Focus would have character if you find a gearbox to go behind it.
a turbo 202 red top with EFI would be cool but a pain to put in but i reckon aYB ford sierra Cosworth engine from an RS500 if you can find one and turbo it
3:52 lol Holden red 4'2 lol 253 stroked to 310 decked out heads good can 500+ na then noss
Either K swap or the rotary would both be great engines for this car and no major mods to the chassis/body for either engine.
Although unless you know where to get a rotary cheaply they’re almost as expensive as a LS….mainly 13B a little less for the 12A
TRD Aurion 2GR Supercharged, you can get sleeves for them, and maybe try to brace the open deck somehow.
I have a SR20 red top with auto trans and ECU + harness in my shed.
Do you have available the GM Atlas 4200 inline 6 in Australia, could be interesting
Holden 253. Nice little V8 going in A Holden. Nice lumpy cam.. Would be a nice little package.
GM ecotec 2.0 or 2.4 that they use in the states for drag racing. Pays homage to the four cylinder torana. With compound turbo setup of course.
