Great show. Superb to listen to these two (local to me) legends. I remember watching them on 500 Hondas at Cadwell. My (poor) claim to fame is my late father used to paint Roger B’s helmets many many years ago. I still have an Arai towel he gave us.
Great podcast episode could listen to the two rogers and there insights every week .the tv media is not interested in motorcycles, when danny kent became moto 3 world champion nothing on him on tv he should of been the new Barry sheene
Thanks a lot, Bomber. We're a dangerous sport and mainstream TV don't like dangerous sports. Maybe a compromise can be found. Eurosport do a great job but it's not open to the masses. Maybe more so on streaming via Discovery+ but time will tell.
Hello Dave et al. I enjoy the pods, thank you. With regards the lack of coverage in the papers. Dwindling readers, including mcn compared to decades ago, media is consumed differently now a days, I'm mid 50s and i get this. I don't know the answer, but I do know how the way I keep up to date has changed, I guess it's the same for many others. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Alan, so glad you're enjoying what we do. As for media, yeah it's changed beyond recognition even in the last 5 years and you're quite right, it's the same for all of us - especially those of us who still remember magazines... :-D
Cal Crutchlow was odds on to win at Silverstone MotoGP in Aug 2017 which would have been the first brit to win at that level since Barry Sheene. The only two wheeled sport news on the BBC that weekend was Laura Kenny had given birth to a baby boy ffs. The media coverage has not got any better since.
Wow so interesting Dave these guy's the 2 Rogers should be running things in the sport here they have complete insight and foresight and could make things work better for the sport as regards to money and the spread of it to the teams .I totally agree with the fact that motorcycling needs rather than should be on terrestrial TV I for one could not afford to pay for the various channels to watch all the bike racing on TV .Riders need to be paid they literally put their lives on the line and when compared to F1 bike racing is 100 times more exciting to watch .These guys are just a wealth of knowledge absolutely great watch I could watch this for hours thanks for putting it out brilliant .🙏👌👍
You're welcome, Crumblymal. Glad you enjoyed it, and some really valid points. BSB goes out on Quest occasionally but It'll be a while before anything changes for more mainstream channels but hopefully one day it will.
Have just started to watch these shows. 1st for me being Nigel Bozz. What a great pair of lads you interviewed there. 1st: Getting our riders into Moto GP. I still don’t feel World Superbikes is a natural stepping stone. Look back over the years when we had so much Production racing in the UK, and racers didn’t have the experience of pukka race bikes, ie set up etc. They just didn’t get the opportunities to get into the GP,s. We used to have the European championships as a stepping stone then back in the 80’s. We have produced some bloody good riders in this country but who have we produced in the Uk who is as good as , Pedro Acosta, Marc Marquez etc? We need to be creating more opportunities for our younger lads to go abroad and like Roger says Learn the tracks etc. BSB: I’ve always said the the revenue generated by ALL the teams participating in the BSB show is just not distributed fairly if at all. The circuits and facilities are so so much better which you have to give credit for, but. if the race teams are not compensated in prize/ appearance money the you will lose those teams and eventually you will have no show. Maybe the circuit owners feel that there will always be others who want to be apart of the show no matter what the cost? Roger Burnett should be a Team representative to negotiate appearance money for the Teams? Why do I watch PGA golf matches in Florida with say 30/40 thousand spectators if that on tv and the prize money is 2.5 to 3.5 million dollars for that one match? Is it purely down to TV? In the Uk no sport is going to be bigger than football, but like Roger says everything needs to be done to raise the profile of the sport and the riders. Absolutely loved listening to both of them, both brilliant racers in their day. Sound quality was a little poor for some reason? Thanks
Thanks so much, Paul and I’m glad you’ve found us! The fellas are absolutely class and I agree with you on the Roger Burnett points, too. As for the sound, it was an experiment that didn’t work and had to do more post-processing than I’d have liked.
Proper pod this one. As you know dave I work with a ex rider and was always a hard task with what you are putting on the line and in for the potential reward and fundamental finished a career. Should be something visible to the public eg a bonus check for rider of the round like in supercross. Hard for the young community today to see what reward do I get for the risk.
It's long been a bone of contention for many, Woza, as well you know. I don't know the answer but certainly risk vs reward (from a public perception at the very least) isn't where it could be.
Prize money for the best performing team is a good idea. An Invitation race at the end of the day when riders can ride whatever they have might be better.
The secret to F1’s commercial success lies back in the 70’s and the structure and deals Bernie Ecclestone created. Sure the Netflix thing was a shot in the arm but it’s about those early deals.
This is the first time I’ve disagreed with some of the comments made on the podcast but I shall look forward to parts 2&3 to see if my mind gets changed.
Referring to what RB mentions regarding the costs of running a Superbike team relative to the returns, it is sad but true to say BSB largely relies on patrons rather than sponsors. No savvy sponsor gets involved when the TV audience is small so companies with sizeable amounts of cash to spend naturally go elsewhere. It seems to me the championship relies largely on the enthusiasm & goodwill of people who love the sport rather than hard-nosed investors. A possible alleviation is to make participation cheaper which would reduce the burden. Superstock & Superbike classes are too similar. To a spectator they seem almost the same. I think Superstock should be ditched with Superbike rules changing to bring them closer to the 'stockers & make racing more affordable. After all, the original ethos of the Superbike class was top level racing should be more accessible by basing race machines on road bikes. Making the change might not be easy given the rules would probably have to apply worldwide but it is worth thinking about. The other possibility might be to reduce the number of rounds which would save on consumables & travel costs.
Understand where you're coming from but don't necessarily agree on the Superstock/Superbike point because that's 40 riders at least without a ride, young riders and experienced riders equally. As for less rounds, 11 rounds from April to October with no back-to-back rounds genuinely isn't a stretch for anyone. I suspect Round 1 will be at Navarra next season so that's one less round for the Stock class as I don't expect they'll be there for that.
Isn't the fundamental problem with the lack of money in racing bikes that there is no longer significant interest in road bikes and therefore no longer significant money to be made from selling bikes and all the associated industries around bike ownership? For most young people bikes are unachievable due the expense of ownership and the convoluted and expensive licensing system we now have. Bikes are now toys for middle-class, middle-aged men with money to spare. The general population has no aspirations to own a bike and the potential big sponsors are not interested, sponsorship only comes from within the bike industry and that funding is too small to do much more than what is currently done.
Times have definitely changed, Andrew. Not necessarily for the better in many ways. When I was young there were bikes everywhere, RGVs, KR1-S, RD's, so many to choose from and your heroes riding them at a weekend! The Bagger series in the States shows where the market for racing is these days, so it's best to enjoy while we can because the landscape could look very different in 5-10 years time. The Multistrada Cup and The GS Championship 🤣😳

Thanks Rick, so glad you enjoyed it 😊
Love the fact, Ryan has these two on his team. Quality
Could listen to these 2 all day 🙂
Lucky for you there are two more shows, Ian 😁 One Thursday and one Monday 👌🏼
Can’t wait for the next instalment FairPlay mate 👏👏
Thanks, Dave - tomorrow and Monday 🙂

I used to love going to the circuits to watch BSB live…. But I ain’t paying the current prices.👎
I were good friends with his son drew marshall at school roger Marshall son was a keen motocrosser and sand racer
British riders don't even race at Silverstone, the only gp track we have. They just use the short circuit.
It's true, David. There are a couple of reasons for it but it's a shame not to use the full track sometimes.
