@@RR-bt5xv I am curious about that as well. I have a feeling Ray is much too generous with his time with issues like this. He’s mentioned in previous videos he is paid on a “flat rate” basis so these repairs / diagnostics are limited to the flat rate. Diagnostics has a lot of leeway in most cases so it can’t be a totally losing deal for him, but I doubt he will make anything remotely close to what time he has in this one.

The thing plugged into the OBDII plug is a Maestro interface module for his Pioneer stereo. It allows the stereo to display tire pressures, display engine codes (?), multiple gauges, which camera to display manually or based on reverse, forward, left or right turn signal, etc. All without cutting any factory wiring. HEY! I have an 08 Hummer H2 that had the same issue with the key, as I was watching the video I kept hearing you say you were going to look at the shifter lever, but you never did! You'd be completely surprised that that was my issue! The wire that leads into the shifter lever is in a crappy spot and will get cut after so many shifts into D and P. I also had it go away for a little bit and then come back until I looked under that cover and saw the actual wire cut! It was barely hanging on by one little strand. When I fixed the wire I never had that issue again. I hope you look into it before you send the vehicle back out, or suggest replacing anything until you verify that the cable isn't broken first. Love the videos man and hope you can see this comment and it helps you out!

oh ray, i could tell you a story about these types of connectors like they use in these integrated fuse panels and the multi-terminal connectors in general that use those blade type terminals.
I've dealt with these for years in my field of work (fork lifts) and i can say i have learned they are one of the first things to check because of the cheap terminals they use inside these connectors.
One fix i've found (besides replacing the complete component) is to put a slight twist on the male side to force the terminal to mate more positively.
Yeah i know it's not a "factory" fix but it will eliminate the bad connection for a while. The dilemma you run into is even if you replace the connector or terminals, if you put back the factory ones, unless they are better quality you will get the same issue again in the future.
Quality control now a days had gotten pretty slack imo, even on the higher end vehicle components.
If i ever run into this issue i've done some research and found some electric supply companies do sell the terminals that are better quality if the factory ones suck (platt, allied electronics, digikey, etc). But then again these type of repairs can be time consuming and you may not want to go down that path because time is always working against you in your business probably more so than it does in mine.
Sorry for my personal rant on this subject but thought it may help you in some strange way. 😁😁

    • @AdamantineAxe
      @AdamantineAxe ปีที่แล้ว +6

One way to prolong terminal life is to coat the with good dielectric like nyogel, fretting corrosion is invisible to the naked eye and common with GM connectors in my experience
Another trick to improving contact is to put a coat of solder on the male pin making it bigger for better contact. Mostly use this on relays and fuses where the fuse box contacts have spread and non-replacable.

Great video as usual. Couple of tips if you do ever happen to get another H2 to work on. I had one for a number of years and know a lot about them as well as repairing things on them. Always open and close the hood with the two big grab handles in the middle of the hood. There is a high risk of tweaking the hood otherwise and it will get it so that the center latch will no longer line up and latch. Be very careful removing any plastics on an H2 - they are old and brittle which is of course typical but very expensive to replace. For example a good condition front door panel for an 03-07 will easily run $450 or more these days...
Common issue on all years with them is the key getting stuck. It is almost always the connecter on the switch in the console by the shifter. The problem is the wires are always getting moved back and forth during its life and eventually the wires break off - often still visibly connected but its just the insulation of the wire still holding it to the pins in the connector. As things expand and contract with temperature changes it will intermittently lose its connection. Fix is a new crimp on pigtail or extract the pins and solder the broken wires to the pins. Most get a replacement pigtail with a new connector. Its quite possible that it was the fusebox under the hood though. That newer style fusebox on the GMT900 platforms is known to have corrosion issues.
The 08/09 models have the GMT900 platform electrical system with the 6.2 and 6L80 trans while the 03-07 ones have the GMT800 platform electrical system (same as your Silverado) with the 6.0 (LQ4) and a 4L65 trans.

Tip for all electrical contacts: a few weeks ago I posted this response in IVAN's (Pine Hollow Diag.) when he asked for tips on contact cleaning, but it got deleted because I put in the link to where I had gotten these--apparently a no-no in youtube land.
The items I consider a MUST for mechanics is a COARSE FIBERGLASS ERASER BRUSH. The company where I had(and still do) gotten these is still in business over 40years later, but you will need to do your own search as I am not allowed to link them.
A brief history on these brushes: my uncle was in the office supply business and he showed me a brush over 40 years ago. They were used to clean typewriter keys so why not electrical contacts? They work wonderfully and after experimenting, I found the COARSE ones were best. Before soldering connections, these will give you a nice clean surface as well!

Ray, I'm in Canada and I had to replace the under hood fuse box last year on my Tahoe 5.3. That fuse box is a bad design in addition to being very prone to collecting dust and building corrosion. In my case my rear backup lights would stay on in the colder weather. I tried contact cleaner and cleaning the pins but it's the circuit board inside that fuse box panel that goes bad.
Considering that the truck's an '08 it was a good call to replace it entirely.

You are such a comedian. Service writers talk to techs? Try being serious; they are too important to bother with mechanic peasants. I had a problem with the REAR air in my new Aerostar. I printed-out a detailed description. The mechanic twice diagnosed, and I quote: "You need to be moving good to get cool." The third time back, I went into the lounge and happened to glance back and saw the "professional" service writer crumple the explanation, throw it in the trash, and write the ticket. I ran up and saw she wrote "check AC not cold." I went full Karen/Ken, because it just so happens, I DID personally know the stealership f&i manager. Turns out the tech was never told to check the rear unit and the front cooled fine. Damaged rear refrigerant line.

There’s a new pigtail sold online that lengthens the wires so they don’t break again that’s the easiest and best way to fix it. I believe I got mine on either Amazon or eBay.
