Young mechanics, PLEASE take careful note of how Ray has expanded his tool storage. A toolbox is just that, a toolbox. A toolbox is for securing the tools that make you money, my toolbox has never made me a penny, but it protects the things that do. CONGRATS RAY YOU EARNED IT!
I must firmly disagree. A toolbox protects your tools, that much is true. A good toolbox also organizes your tools in such a way, that you have quick access to what you need. So a good toolbox makes you money when it saves you time.
Between watching South Main and you, every time I pick up a can of brake cleaner I hear that sound effect in my head. Congrats on the new to you box. I still have my first Snap-on box.
Yes, I like the "hybrid" video. Congrats on the "new to you" box. Refusing to use debt is very wise! Also, I LOVE the air nozzle. PLEASE tell me someone has named that the "AIR-15".
Ray, this video was very much worth posting do more from time to time. One of my son's watches your videos, I am not sure how often, but I an sending him a link to this one. He is a first year mechanic apprentice, he started as an adult. I am trying to convince him he does not need an expensive tool chest to start off with. A good second hand one or a good cheaper one will do the job. Not cheap and nasty, I meant affordable. Snap-on is not affordable for an apprentice, and in reality, something an apprentice should not be looking at. The expensive ones come later as you can afford them if you have a desire for one. I feel there is just as good quality out there for much lest cost. Tools on the other hand are different thing.
I think it may be safe to say that this is Rays garage. Lol. Yes, it's a company he works for, but 96% of the tools in the building are his. 😎😎 You're an awesome person Ray!, I'll meet you one of these days! I watch everyday and some times go back and watch videos 2 or more times over an over. The best part of everything you do in all the videos, is put all heart into everything and no bullshit!
Had a similar situation when I started working for a local dismantler/ELF. There was only a "basic" kit there. Started buying my own stuff to make my job easier and then find the owner and his friends felt free to borrow my stuff and not replace it in the place & condition they found it. After noting a couple of missing spanners and some damaged torx & Allen sockets I knew it was time to secure my kit. The roll cab cost me what I would normally spend in around 6 weeks on the tool truck that visited but meant i was no longer having to buy stuff twice. I hear when I left the boss had to go out and buy a load of kit having realised that his own kit was insufficient for the job. I should have charged him rental for me using it 😂🤣
When I'm helping a friend and he needs a tool, he'll say which box, and which drawer the tool is in. To organize is to be efficient with your time. Oh and thank you for placing the positive battery post cover back on the terminal. Remove fire hazard.
I often use ArmorAll to keep non plastic things shiny, and try air tool lube oil on your drawer slides as it does not dry or go sticky. The set is growing. Think of it as momma & poppa had a baby.
I worked for years wrenching with my old Craftsman stand up tool box. Finally, I got a large toolbox like your new one. Absolutely love it. So nice to know where your tools are when you doing a repair. I know your excitement Ray, something you'll use with pride everyday. Thanks for sharing and I always like your video's, regardless..... Love these mechanic slice of life videos. Kinda reminds me of when my dad would take me to the shop he worked at when I was a kid, and he’d try to explain it all to me
I bought a used snap- on box off the truck for $100.00 back in 1973, while cleaning the trays pulled the cork liner to clean it and found 2 $100.00 bills.
This kinda video is good for young techs to see. You put in the work and time and your tool collection will grow with you. Can’t have all the cool shit from day one, you gotta work for it. 😎😎
It’s honestly cool seeing how other guys organize their boxes. Gives me lots of ideas to use on my setup! Congrats on more toolage containment space, Ray
It is amazing you can have such a tool collection at your place of work. In Albuquerque you would come to work and not just find them pried open but actually wheeled away. If you had a security camera watching them it would be taken here too.
I enjoy 'watching' your videos whilst doing electronics work at my bench, in the barn over my 'Auto shop', seeing how you organize tools is a great behind-the-scenes way for others to get a peek into more efficient ways to stage their shop, an area that is very important as keeping things put away and organized and is really the biggest/hardest part to working on anything. So I appreciate the peek. I don't always agree with your approach, but I also get many good ideas from your channel- keep up the great work!
I enjoy seeing how others organize their tools I often see things that work better than how I organize mine and get ideas for more effecient organization
Congrats on the new to you toolbox ray. I started out in express service at a Nissan dealer with a beat up old craftsman box. Worked in express out of that box for 2 years finally had a chance to move up to a line tech which actually timed perfectly with the birth of my beautiful and healthy baby girl. As a gift from one of my fellow techs being as I was using a plastic roll cart as a service cart and couldn’t really afford another box gave me his relatively new us general roll cart to use. I’ve learned since getting that cart 2 years ago a tool box is just storage really the money is made from your service cart. I’ll probably retire my craftsman eventually but until it’s over flowing with tools it will do just fine.
Glad you found a matching box. All my boxes are side of the road "hey look at that... I can fix it" boxes. They sure are not pretty but I lose tools in them all the time.
I enjoy your tool area nicely. Over time it will get done, but so far I continue my own red/black theme to go along with my truck and job. Love the blue tool boxes.

I think the video format is fine. Some of the things I think you can add to shorter videos are something like this (IMO): 1.) A list/showing/etc. of common tools that a home DIY mechanic should have for those who do routine maintenance and other simple repairs. 2.) A review/suggestion on basic code scanners for the DIY'er (low, mid and upper priced). This way they can check the codes to see if it's a repair that they can and want to repair or if they should take it to a repair shop. This can also help some go into a repair shop with some knowledge... however this could be a double edge sword for those who wanna act like they know more/all. 3.) A DIY'er random question grab bag where viewers can ask a question that you put into a bag and randomly pull one or two and you can give suggestions ... for example, a code scan (using a suggested scanner in # 2) says I have a vacuum leak at _______, I've checked area A, and Area B, where else can I look for a leak? or "I have an 07 Monte Carlo and the light/LED behind the driver side window switches are burned out, where can I find out what voltage it's using (since LED's use less voltage), etc. for replacing the LED without replacing the whole switch assembly?" things like that. 4.) Review/Suggestions for floor jacks/jack stands from different brands (low, medium & high priced). Just some ideas.
Often, I find someone commenting in my ear that my probe fails to fit well and is loose to the fastener. Recently, Ray's terminology appears to reflect my love life and I have adopted 'Do De Do' at a certain point during my interactions. I have to thank Ray for his ongoing and non intentional innuendo like "I can do certain things one handed" at 14 min 30 sex/secs.

Nice of that box to come along just as you needed it. But I did recieve a word of advice from an old mechanic. He said that you should never have more tool boxes than you can fit in the back of your pickup. It makes moving days so much simpler. Especially if your working relationship with your shop goes south.
Put those dusty drawer mats in the washing machine on gentle cycle or in a netted bag. Put a few towels in with it too, and they'll help scrub the mats
The techs in our shop used conveyor belt material that we got out of shredder trucks we worked on. It's about about 3/32" thick fiber reinforced rubber with a non skid surface. That stuff lasts forever if you can get your hands on it.
@@phloxxic1387 Great idea! I didn’t have access to stuff like that, and saw this cork stuff at Home Depot or someplace. They have thicker adhesive versions for ad lib cork boards. Never used that for anything.
Ray only you can make someone getting a used toolbox interesting to watch! Keep up the good work, you provide a little fun that is hard to find anymore.
I'm just digging that your tool boxes are all the same color. We have a collection of various sizes snap-on, matco, and off brand boxes down in the basement and everyone is a different color. The largest orange one I can't even see in the top two rows of drawers let alone the lift top (I'm 5'3). We also have two different colored ones in the car trailer and rather large one in the office that holds pew-pew cleaning products, reloading tools / ingredients, borescopes, etc. But my husband does make sure all his toolboxes at the shop match 😂
At the shop I worked at, we all had shiny Matco boxes, and during downtime, we'd go raid the detail department for degreasers and waxes to keep our boxes pretty.

We never dropped a vehicle or damaged one by lifting against the exhaust, oil pans, gas tanks or floor pans. As far as I know anyway, altho my brothers car was sent out the door without lug nuts.
Its always a good day when there's a new video from Ray. This is the kinda stuff I want to do when I have a couple of seals under my belt, just make videos of my work and say whats going on in my head. Love it
I've got same age "corolla" hatchback (it's called Auris). It got ~270k miles and engine swap is on the way (blown gasket) (cheaper to swap engine to "newer" than trying to fix that milage engine). Great car, cheap in maintenance and super economic (I've got it just for travels arround Europe). Paint, transmission and everything overall is okay after 15 years
Some of my coworkers would laugh at me because I carried around red chalk stick in my pocket. While doing a long laundry list of work on vehicles I would mark in red drain plugs after I tighten them. Let just say I never had a failure due to a drain plug been loose like they did.
Funny thing,,,, When my phones are busy,,, I carry a fat chalk in my pocket to remember where I left off tightening when I return ! Have a great weekend !
Ohhh! I'm going to start doing that now haha! Thank you so much for this, I have so much anxiety after a job's completed on whether or not everything's been tightened properly, this should help immensely. Idk why I didn't think of that....
@Mike S I use those for when I'm doing engine repairs. You never want to be woken up in the middle of the night and think "Did I torque down the flywheel bolts"
Ray sounds like a kid on Christmas with the new boxes. I feel your joy for the stickers. I have 3 computers covered and a packpack with over 30 pins on it
Congrats on finding a matching box! I'm not sure if it was me but I thought I could actually hear the difference in the drawer that you greased vs. the ones below it. Either way it looks awesome!

@Mike S Used a red paint stick to keep track of tight vs loose.
@@milkymalkum5708 Simple solution that washes away. Peace of mind it worth it
@Mike S I use those for when I'm doing engine repairs. You never want to be woken up in the middle of the night and think "Did I torque down the flywheel bolts"
It's Blue, that means it's Good!👍 You can never have enough storage space for tools😁 Have a great weekend Ray!
Ray sounds like a kid on Christmas with the new boxes. I feel your joy for the stickers. I have 3 computers covered and a packpack with over 30 pins on it
Now ya just need a walking stick covered with pins from places you've been
That’s a beautiful new box, sir. Very impressive wall you’re putting together.
Congrats on finding a matching box! I'm not sure if it was me but I thought I could actually hear the difference in the drawer that you greased vs. the ones below it. Either way it looks awesome!
Chrisfix may have ideas for cleaning the shelf liners using common tools!! 🤣
Looks nice, though!
