    You will not overturn a 2CV, no matter how hard you try. My dad used to recount being at the Geneva car show one year when Citroen had set up a special test track with an open challenge. Anyone who could overturn a 2CV would win a free car, and of course nobody won. Despite the whole car being only slightly more complicated than the average lawn tractor, the 2CV was equipped with an amazing suspension system.

      someone I knew had a similar challenge, tho he was inteligent enough to try to roll her in reverse (do not do this at home, it is indeed the only way to flip one)

    As a 2cv driver let me reassure you, this guy was in no danger of tipping over, or losing control. Looks dramatic as hell but that's literally the only way of getting up a hill like that without losing all your momentum and being stuck at 10mph. So much fun though.

      Have you ever removed the tailgate? I used to take mine off so often i replaced the nuts on the rear crossmember with wingnuts.
      Roll the roof back, open the door, remove the four nuts and then depress the door holder opener thingy :) and slide the piece attached to the door out of the other one.
      I don't know if all Dyanes had the ability to fold the back seats up against the front, but mine did. The first time i did this i went to collect a six foot square fence panel for a mate. 'Most' of it fitted in. I roped it all down so it couldn't move and then drove back to his. On the way i stopped at a roundabout next to three guys in a Volvo estate. They saw me, laughed and then wound down the window and gave me a round of applause and the driver shouted that he couldn't do that in his Volvo!
      If you do do this, be aware that the body flexes a little...
      To the point that if you throw it into a tight left hand bend the right hand side door is likely to fly open. The same happens for the left hand door on a tight right hand bend.
      I wonder if that's the reason Citroen fitted rubber door straps, because the door springs open, and then is twanged shut by the strap :)
      The exhaust sounds so sexy with the roof and door off too!

    • @Munkenba
      @Munkenba 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wingnuts would be an awesome idea come to think of it! My dream is to build half doors that go as high as the windowsill. Pair that with some kind of quick release system for the roof and summer would just be sorted. Fuck it, how hard can all that be?

    The 80 years old priest of my village rode this way with his 2 CV. He was even more toxic with his mobylette AV 65 moped. Nobody tried to follow him downhill, far too fast for any ordinary motorcyclist even with a 350 cc Nice memories, he was a very good and gentle man with a wit sense of humour, he died almost 100 years old.

      Performance on this cars depends on engine, carburetor, flywheel, gearbox and body, they all could be different, not a lot, but while driving you really feel the difference between ones and others. A 602cc M28 engine with twin barrel Solex carb gives you 32 hp.

    • @leneanderthalien
      @leneanderthalien 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      None 602cc 35hp DIN (take attention the old powers unit was in SAE who is unrealistic) was built, only 29hpDIN : the only engine who give 35hp DIN was the Visa 652cc engine with aluminium nicasil cylinder and full electronic ignition, was never installed in the 2cv, but it's posible to put one in a 2cv but need flywheel machinig to fit properly (clutch distance is different), and instaling a 2cv upgraded electronic ignition (the Visa ignition is not compatible with the 2cv gearbox who support the timing sensors).The 2cv on the viodeo cannot have a 9 or 12hp, the body is much more modern and fit the 24 to 29hp era...

    Very funny, the extravagance of the "2 pattes" (2 legs in English, for the number of cylinders) suspensions which never roll over !

  • @nicholasgromak7627
    @nicholasgromak7627 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The reason he's driving like that is because he knows you're behind him. A common thing with 2cv drivers is that they know how under powered their cars are so they never lift off the throttle, even in these tight curves. Because these cars only have between 9 and 12 horsepower, lifting off the throttle for one second can screw up your top speed for hours before you get a downhill section to get your speed back. At least that is the story I've been told.

    • @Candisa
      @Candisa ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This body style is too new to have 9 or 12 or even 18hp, this one has 24 or 29hp. The problem is the gears are too far apart to build momentum uphill and actually shift to a higher gear, so if you slow down you're stuck revving all the way up in 1st gear. If you keep momentum, you probably make it up all the way in 2nd.
      A 2CV will never ever roll going forward on stock suspension with the correct Michelin tyres, so as long as there's room for understeer there is no reason to lift off.

    People calm your secondary characteristics, it's a 2 CV:
    You will have to badly trick it to flip, at all.
    And, with a car of 21 hp (at max, looks more like a 17 hp version) You don't give up hitting it hard as long as You want to keep moving even slowly along a mountain road like that.
    (Drove a bunch of these for together about 400.000 km)

    Back in the '60s I remember seeing in a car magazine a somewhat tongue-in-cheek article, where they tested how much various cars can be tilted before they fall over. 2CV won, its tipping point was no less than 60 degrees from horizontal. So the car in the video was nowhere near to flip. If my memory serves, VW Kleinbus came last with 45 degrees.

    I used to drive my 2CV the same way at the time (ca. 1970).
    What people not familiar of the 2CV (and that includes almost everybody except the French and maybe a few other European countries) is that the 2CV suspension was very very "springy" with the center of gravity of the car quite low (or at least lower than it seems) as the top is made of very light corrugated metal tin this case) most commonly the top was made of canvas.
    I admit the man at 0:45 didn't master his driving 100%… otherwise although "spectacular" it was pretty common routine for a 2V.
    The 2V was initially designed in the late 30's as an "all terrain" vehicle for the army. Blueprints were made but I believe no actual car came out before war came. Manufacturer lauchend the 2CV from that after the war.
    It was a great and fun little car. For many it was the "first car" akin the beetle in Germany or USA. For people living in the country it was an all purpose vehicle (you could remove the seats) and you could drive it in any condition or almost. In any state too : I remember a friend who disposed of all the seats altogether and sat at the wheel with a wooden stool (no it wasn't even a chair)… These were the days ! …
    Several 2CV went around the world, one crossed the Sahara desert, I know personally of one traveling in the Andes mountains from Mexico to South of Chile.
    A basic tool box, a few spark plugs, some rubber tube, a length of wire, and a roll of string was all you needed to have it fix in any place…
    Great little car !…
    Of course such basic equipment had its drawback.
    Speed was never higher than 90 km/h (55mph) that is going downhill ! Heater was non existent : with a canvas top winter driving was something to be experienced (some took with them a portable petroleum heater … ), the first wipers were just a laugh (they even could operate by hand in case the mechanism broke !!!…), door latches were limited to that : a latch. But the car never failed, or almost.
    Now they are collectors items and are quite expensive !…

    That's pretty much standard for 2CVs. We're talking two horizontal springs per corner and all held in tension front to back. Unlike moderns you're not limited to what space is left under the wheel arches after you take into account the springs, arms, shocks etc . . . if your mind is stuck in the standard modern mindset then this will have more travel than you could ever think possible.

    Back in the day you could pull similar tricks in Renault 4 vans, their leans scared the crap out of other drivers ……..many the time I've had a tailgater ''back the 4X off '' 'cos I threw it round a bend or 2.

    That car did not have the roll bar same as the 2cv so it's quite normal seeing the car rolling from on side to the other considerably.

    Charging down the French Alps in a more modern right hand drive 2CV6 my French female passenger sitting in the front left seat where she would normally been a driver exclaimed. "60 dans in Deuche c'est trop" (seems too much). My response. "It is 60 Miles not Kilometres - over 100 kph". The French are used to 2CV ballet in corners. Formidable fun.
