Myanmar's Dark Reality: Religious Extremism, Rubies & Rebellion | Myanmar Documentary

  • Long regarded as one of the world’s worst dictatorships, the military junta of Myanmar finally stepped down from power in 2011. However three years on, its people continue to fight for freedom.
    The military remains in charge and shares its profits with the ruby lords of the world’s largest deposits of these gems. We explore the country’s ruby mines, and how the Burmese miners dream of one day finding fortunes among these stones.
    We also meet the Palaung rebels, many of whom have never held a rifle before, fighting the Myanmarese army to achieve greater autonomy for themselves and destroy poppy fields providing the heroin that is destroying their community.
    The country is rife with religious extremism, violence and islamophobia. Known as the ’Myanmarese Bin Laden’, extremist Buddhist monk Wira Thu has plenty to say about the small Muslim minority he is determined to chase out of Myanmar.
    This documentary was first released in 2014.

    The title is misleading. As Myanmar people, I want to clarify some facts.
    1. The fact, Palaung is fighting under Chinese influence. They are under Chinese communist in the name of Northern alliance to protect the Chinese interests in Myanmar against Myanmar people's will. Opium has been growing by their own local farmers for Chinese businessmen then sold to International market through AA or Arakan Reblels. But nowadays, they focus on other drugs like Ice or Methamphetamine. That is nothing to do with majority of Myanmar people. Their land is difficult to grow the crops and Opium is their survival crops. UN is helping a lot in this issue. But those militias under the Chinese communists will blame the Myanmar army and Myanmar people.
    2. Monk Wirathu is not really followed by Majority of Myanmar people, let alone he was jailed by Myanmar army most of the time. Even ex-elected Myanmar government led by Aungsansukyi put him in jail.

    Correction - The Rohinyas are Sunni Muslims and do cover their faces as evident in documentaries of them taking refuge in Bangladesh. It is also true that a non Muslim must convert according to Islam in marriage. At the end of the day, this conflict is a case of doing to them before it is done to you. The Western countries that gave refuge to them are now facing a dilemma is an undeniable truth of a toxic religious ideology.

    • @faheemzafar2550
      @faheemzafar2550 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      There is no "Force" for reverting to Islam (in Islam); if Rohingya were practicing it, it was their own personal act. In Islam there is no permission to marry Buddhist, however conditional marriage capacity for book religion (Christianity, Judaism) does exist.
      Nevertheless, brutality is acceptable by any means in any religion. We are first human beings and then followers of religion. The way they lynch their own people is absolute unfair, cruel, and unjust (against Sidarth Nath Buddha's teaching).
      In the West Islam is flourishing; it is a dilemma for you but I see dozens of people accepting Islam because they are learned people who open their minds by backing up their research with truthfulness. Secondly, in the West none of the countries are religious (as all of them are Secular) - and are open to discussion and welcoming innovations with honesty.

The word "Kala" that the monk, Werathu used in his preach meaning "The Indian, or the Black". So, he's not only the one who promotes the Religious Hatred, but also a Brutal Racist.

      i agree with the teaching. i am not a buddist mysef but i saw and read history how once a dominant Buddist/Hindu religion in Malaysia and Indonesia and Philippines lost to Muslim. it started with peace preaching, and everything glamourous and they are tolerant. they tried and succeed killing the male heir and or marry to a princes who is next to throne. in an instant, when the princess become queen, the husband became king and on the next day, any one who will not fold to islam is either be killed or force to exile themselves. that is the tragedy of some Asian Countries.
