    A very interesting video on the development of a mini clutch, most of my work was done on pre diaphragm clutches. They were introduced to the mini in, I believe, 1965 if I remember correctly.
    An excellent tool but it does sound unnecessarily complicated, however I suppose that you only had to make one. I'd have fixed a shaft to that base block that fits on the lathe bed (a bit like a stub axel) and pressed the bearing on to it. Then I would then have machined the puller for the bearing to press fit into that. Next I would have exactly mounted three round pillers onto the old puller and reduced the diameter of their top sections to exactly fit the holes in the clutch. Wouldn't everything then line up exactly? Maybe I'm wrong and have missed something? I really like your locking device to exactly line up the next rivet.
    A pity that there isn't someone in the spring making company who's interested in motor sport that you could "chat up" to let you have a few. Way back in my racing days I did this several times was surprised how often it was successful.
    Good luck with the venture, a very wise decision re the lifting device.

      That is defiantly another way to skin the cat Tony. I think if we could order like 1K springs there is loads of people who would be willing to make them for us but unfortunately the market just isn't there. At least this way I can be tooled to to make a few of these at a time and keep a limited stock to help people out who are not in a position to make one them selves 👍

    @aussiebloke609 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very "frictiony," Paul. :-D What you're making seems to be basically a dividing head - only different. And considerably cheaper, i would think.
    Incidentally, I imagine a traditional twin-plate clutch would also transfer more torque. Does no one make one for a Mini?

    • @HREIRL
      @HREIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya that’s it’s basicly it’s a deciding head just very specific and as you say a lot cheaper lol

    I was thinking if there's 6 rivets to drill out mount it to a large bit of hex bar and use the hex in the chuck to index it, probably easier to machine but not as quick to drill out....
    I don't understand how you get increased clamping pressure but not increased pedal pressure? Can you explain how this works? Or does it purely create more adjustabilty so you can better suit the requirements and therefore as light a clutch as possible to hold the required torque?

    • @HREIRL
      @HREIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That was definitely and idea I considered Arrin, but there is actually 9 rivets which kinda rules that out. I am going to follow up on the clamping pressure verses peddle pressure in the next video, how I explain it off the cuff is a little misleading in hindsight. the truthe is for any given clamping force the verto gives a lower pedle pressure than the equvlient clamping load V peddle pressure on a Pre-verto

  • @Sternhammer89
    @Sternhammer89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video guys, looking forward to the next. You mention in here that twin springs gives double (or there abouts) clamping force, but easier pedal pressure? I was advised that 2 x 1275 springs would be too heavy on the foot and that for my 130ft/lb engine to look for a 1275 + 998 spring? According to my research 998 clutches are painted Dark Green, but I can't seem to find these anywhere?

    • @HREIRL
      @HREIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen a few 998 Diaphragm with a green paint dot on them but really the only way is to get a load of different ones and measure the thickness of the spring and do a pressure test on them. Then we could work our an exact clamping load

  • @Alan-wu3ry
    @Alan-wu3ry 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sorry for the dumb question but how does adding another diaphragm spring result in reduced clutch pedal pressure over a single spring system?

    • @HREIRL
      @HREIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a dumb question at all Alan more a case of miscommunication, adding the second dose not reduce peddle presure it in fact marginal increase it however compared to the same amount of clamping load from a Pre-verto style clutch Diaphragm it is significantly less peddle pressure for a higher holding torque

    Great to watch a plan come together. I have a question though. Are the rivets hardened? As i was watching i was thinking why couldn't the clutch assembly be mounted to a rotary vise/table and the rivet heads milled off horizontally rather than drilled? If that makes sense. Anyway, just found your channel and im really enjoying the back catalogue 👍

    • @HREIRL
      @HREIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel. Glad you found the channel, regarding the hardness there not super hard but milling them is quite difficult as there in a grove, so you can only use a very small milling cutter so couple of passes required. I can drill these with a carbide bit easer. Enjoy the catalogue and see you on the next one 👍

      @@HREIRL ahh i see, in my head i had the cutter taking the whole head off in one go and just winding the vise handle through the 360 and taking them all off. Easy for me to say without the actual bits in front of me...or any meaningful machining experience. Thanks for the reply

    • @HREIRL
      @HREIRL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dave, the simple answer is yes 👍, however you would need to change a few other things such as the clutch arm, the release bearing plunger and the clutch slave cylinder. I plan on having a kit available for this as well.
