  • Today I visit Black Jack and spend some quality time with him grooming and going for a short walk. The vet's instructions are that we limit Black Jack to his stall, the pasture, and short walks around the ranch. I am honestly struggling with ways to spend time with him right now!

He’s a beautiful boy and hopefully with the right medical care and a lot of love he will get better.

Riding is a miniscule part of owning a horse. You'll see!❤

Just commented on the other video, about that field, the water, farrie,r etc. glad you moved him. He is a very kind, sweet horse and I, too, loved grooming my horses and just hanging out. I had a very stressful job and they were the best antidote. Getting good trims by a competent farrier is a necessity. In my other comment I suggested his toes might be too long, hence the tripping. You are lucky to have such a wonderful horse and he is lucky to have you.

Thank you! I did actually feel that the first farrier left his hooves a bit long, but I think his recent trim by the new farrier is great! Hopefully it'll help the tripping.

Sorry you had all these problems!! At least you caught them now instead of later. For a horse that is Black Jack's age & been there done that he looks great & a pre existing injury could come back to haunt them as they age like humans as we age. It was also a good idea to move him, if that is what your gut told you ( always follow that )!!.... I have an 18yr old OTTB that when I brought him home at 5yrs old he had a torn suspensory tendon & had a year & half with no riding. In that time we had alot of grooming sessions & worked on ground manners so he knew what I expected. We did alot of walking together around my house & hanging out with company. I also taught him to long line, walk with me around barrels & some liberty stuff. Black Jack walks on lead so relaxed his lower lip is just flapping just like mine Mr Man. Yes, I ride my horse, but I have to go back to those things because he likes that better than riding. I also know that his pre existing could come to bite us in the butt in the future. I would not trade any of it!! Trust me, those walks, grooming sessions or the other little things you do with him, he already appreciates & you will to!! Don't let people get in your head that you have to ride, doing things with him like liberty could give you guys more of connection than riding!! Keep following your gut!! Remember it's the little things that matter!!

Thank you for this wonderful, encouraging comment! Isn't his lower lip just the greatest! It's always out there just flapping! :) I hope your horse continues to be sound!

Black Jack is soo beautiful and kind hearted…. Hoping this new barn is better for you…. you’ve got to feel good about where you stable your horse and I’m glad that you followed your gut and moved him….dont know if you stayed with same trainer but I would question that too.

having horses is kinda like children. The first one you worry and fret over and take LOTS of pictures. When you get the second one, you've been there and done that and problems don't upset you near as much. You're a kind and patient horse owner that will do great with him/them. BTW-absolutley beautiful new barn.

He is beautiful….and you have an amazing shine on him!!
You will have an idea if he is wanting to mutual groom you, or if he is wanting to nip you, by checking out his ears and facial expression. Mutual grooming is something he wants to do because it’s enjoyable…but if he’s nipping he’s telling you he’s not happy about what you are doing.
    Enjoy your gorgeous boy x

That's good to know! He was definitely not nipping me then because he was really enjoying his groom. He loves getting scratches and rubs. :)

BJ is such a lucky boy to have you as his owner !! He is such a beautiful horse and I would love him also !! I think your going to be able to go on some trail rides with BJ but another horse may be able to handle what your looking for and they will give each other company. What a crash course huh ? I’m sorry it happened that way but it looks like he’s on the mend and I can’t wait to see you guys riding on the trails !!!! And what a super cool stable grounds that BJ is kept at !! I’m so jealous !!!!
    ❤️💯🐴🙏👍
    Ps

It takes time for him to get used to new surroundings, so it's good your not riding him, give him a week or so to get used to his new home.

There are lots of things you can do without riding: groundwork, liberty training, and trick training.

What is his lameness? How can you cure it?
You are doing really well with the grooming and lead walking, he need stimulation that you are providing.
The nipping is probably mutual grooming! If you watch horses groom each other, they use their teeth 😊
He's a good boy walking by your shoulder, that's what horses get taught.
Clever Cowgirl is wonderful for knowledge as well as FSE. Watch both!
Another good channel is Black Horses Friesian Experience.
The one thing you need with horses is PATIENCE. Clever Cowgirl has a horse that is going to need 1 YEAR to recover from his Suspensory Ligament damage
Black Horses have a gelding with a fused hock - 1 year again to recover.

Hi there! He's got an old injury to his lower foot near his flexor tendon. We're doing injections now, so hopefully that will help him. I hadn't thought about the mutual grooming! That totally makes sense. I watch Clever Cowgirl all the time. :) I'll look into those other two channels! Thank you for sharing. :)

The farrier came out right after I made this video, so maybe??? I think injections and rest will be most important. He is a good boy!!

MAKE SURE YOU USE A FLY MASK ON HIM TO KEEP HIS EYES CLEAR....

    • @HorseTaleswithBlackJack
      @HorseTaleswithBlackJack  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Thankfully, he no longer needs a fly mask at his new barn. There are fewer flies there than in my backyard. I can’t even count how many fly masks I bought him in the first couple months, and all but one were lost out in the pasture and never found.
