Who's the Boss?

  • Black Jack has moved into his new digs, and he's working it out with his pasture mates to determine who's boss (and who gets to claim the mares in a nearby pasture). This can look scary to the casual observer, but when you look more closely, so much is just for show. There's very little contact between the two horses, their ears aren't pinned, and they're grazing together like they want to actually be friends.
    I know Black Jack is lame, as you can easily see in this video. I'm working on a video that details ALL the heath issues he's had since I purchased him. Be on the look out for that coming soon!

    I misread the title and thought Jack Black was going to be narrating some horse themed stories, and I thought that would be kind of epic. Not disappointed by the actual content, though 😂

    That was a greeting! They're buds. It's all just conversation......

      They're great buds now. At the beginning, they both had a few bite marks to show for it.

    These two will be great friends…this is nothing about fighting…just talking to each other :)

    I've seen this on another youtube channel when the owner was introducing the Horses to each other...I got the impression it's very common behavior, but probably good to keep an eye on them.

      Yeah, it's pretty normal, and I'm not worried. They're friends now. I was honestly surprised to see Black Jack show some spunk. He's usually just super laid back and calm.

    @6:00 is the official moment they accept each other. Notice their synchronization. In this moment they joined and became a herd, even if its just the two of them

    Well they are not playing, for sure. They are fighting, who's the boss. The possibility of getting injured was for their ancestors to high in a real fight, and an severe injury would have been a death sentence. So nature evolved this kind of stuntfight. The grasing has nothing to do with friendship in this situation. The higher horse shows his power by sending the lower horse from the gracing spot away. Because of that he grases were Black Jack grases. The other horse follows Black Jack and tests if he has learnd is lesson, what he did.

      @@susanneschweizer5937 This is VERY interesting! Thank you for sharing that. That means in this video,Blaze was dominate and sending Black Jack off. So fascinating!

      Sorry to contradict, but in the beginning i See a typical meeting ritual. BJ approaches, they stand eye to eye, and Blaze moves back, just a bit is enough, as the have been out together bevore. To me BJ is higher. That established, Blazer follows and the are a Herd. The more they are together the subtler the ritual.😊 Nice horsey behavior.

    I just found you yesterday and am going backwards through your first video forward…I started out the other end where you focused heavily on lameness issues. I stopped this video at 2:08. It’s difficult to tell from a video, but I don’t like the angle of BJ’s hooves. First, starting with rear, his heels appear to be very low to the ground, but in the front feet, it looks (again, difficult to tell from a moving video), it looks as it one hoof (his left) is a bit taller than his right. His right seems a bit more shallower and flatter on the sole than the left. He also looks to be a wee bit pigeon toed. In rear a wee bit cow hocked. My first thought is perhaps consult with another farrier who specializes in corrective trimming and shoeing. The longer “toe” on his right could possibly be part of the stumbling issue. Just a thought…again, without seeing him standing perfectly still and putting a farriers angle on each hoof to measure the degree of angle it is very hard to make a guess.

      This video was taken right after I took him to the lameness expert, and he was about 6 or 7 weeks past his last farrier (he was late due to the move and vet appointment). I've had him trimmed and shoed since then by a new farrier, and he's much more even now. (Yes, I'd noticed he was uneven, as did the PPE vet.) His conformation is a mess, which doesn't help at his age, I'm sure.

      @@HorseTaleswithBlackJack That’s good news…my App had cow hocks…he wasn’t the picture of perfect conformation by no means…but I loved him and he was a Saint. Pigeon toes can be helped over time with corrective trimming so I’m sure your farrier is working on a plan to help him with his issues. You’re the best! Happy July 4th! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

    The other horse would like to be left alone, but It looks like they’ll end up good friends. We did not put horses together but put the new horse in adjacent pasture for a week or two so they would get acquainted without possible injury. How many horses in that field? No fly masked?

    • @HorseTaleswithBlackJack
      @HorseTaleswithBlackJack  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They're good friends now! There are only four horses in this pasture, including Black Jack. There are hardly any flies at this barn. No idea how they do it, but it's pretty amazing!

  • @carolynstewart8465

    He needs a flymask especially in windy dusty weather. He needs to loose weight if he has feet problems!

    • @HorseTaleswithBlackJack
      @HorseTaleswithBlackJack  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yup, he’d gotten too fat. There was someone at his old barn who kept feeding him extra grain because “he loved him.” He’s gotten much more trim at the new barn.
