Donut Media proud 1988 GT owner here. I have owned one or another of these from the 84 four cylinder to my current (nearly) topped out 88GT. I would say for the most part Fiero were under rated. They were priced on average around a well equipped CRX or Corolla/Tercel but punched WELL ABOVE their weight. Consider the 0-60 times of then sports cars like 300ZX and RX-7’s. ... and all at a more reasonable maintenance price of local American Yankee-Doodle value!
My brother had a few of these growning up pretty sweet ass car.... but since we're on the subject can you do an up to speed on the Ford Thunderbird please it's like my favoritest car in the world

Thanks for the video. I was in my teens during the Fiero's heyday. I loved the later Fieros especially the GT that had the PONTIAC lit up on the back. That was my favorite car for a couple years and I always wondered why production was discontinued. Now I know why.
they only did that cuz the gear inside the motors are plastic and would wear out from contact with the metal worm gear, you can easily swap them for metal machined gears

I loved the Fiero GT, the only thing it lacked was power steering but that didn't matter most of the time. My Dad's friend had one that he would fix for him and he always let me test drive it. Really fun car!

Just stumbled across the channel, been watching a few videos, had to see if you covered the Fiero. My old man passed away this year and I received his Fiero that he drove for 20 years. For some reason he loved this strange, tragic Frankencar. I don't have the cash to restore the thing, but it's one of the few things I have to keep connected to him and I've developed a love for it as well.
Last year, I bought a 85 GT in really good condition. It had 123000 km on it. I drove 10000 km over 5 months from May to October and had no issues. The V6 has just enough power to make it fun to drive. No power steering or power brakes, but it’s got power windows. Figure that.

A runner is someone who runs mail back and forth to different buildings, long before the internet. I worked my way up a bit since then but still nothing to brag about : ) I really did work with him. Have some interesting stories and he really was a hell of a nice guy.
I just bought one of these cars for $3,000!! It's an amazing car, I'm so happy with it! It is such a joy to drive, I'm gonna need to get used to how it handles though.

@@wvusmc Buick makes way more money than Pontiac. The Chinese market alone for Buick probably makes a large chuck of what Pontiac did globally. If Pontiac was given enough money then we could still have both companies maybe despite the recession as Pontiac could have started a new "pony car" war with a properly build Fiero, even with the Iron Duke base engine, because it was a great engine just not a performance engine.

We have a 1986 Fiero 2M4, automatic, white and Alpine sound system. Bought new. For past 6 years "Best in Class" regional car shows. Does cost to maintain, considered a survivor. Will keep our Fiero, thank you.
I owned a '84 Pontiac Fiero. My wife's grandpa worked at GM and obtained the first year production model for his wife and she sold it to my wife for a fountain soda. It was fun to drive, but had 80,000 mile rated Firestones on it. Slid like a banshee. We had soooo many issues with the engine, in the shop 3 times till we had no money to put into it. My wife's father eventually bought it to fix it up, but ended up selling it later. I would love to get a restored one, but the GT instead of the first gen as it was very fun to drive. The speakers in the headrest were a riot, sounded like crap, but there was nowhere else to put em, LOL. Thanks for the vid!!

Ive always wanted a supercharged 3.8 Fiero. Ive owned 2 L67 Grand Prix GTP's. There was always this bug in the back of my head whispering "Pull the motor and put it in a Fiero. Do it do it do it do it"
@@ryanburke5383 I have been a passenger in a Fiero with the 3.8L SC V6 which also had a few simple modifications - it was a very fast car, I've never been in anything quite as fast. Keep in mind there are faster cars, just none that I have experienced. Also consider upgrading the wheels, brakes and transmission if you are going for all out performance.
@Gabriel Lobo what about the powertrain? I knew that a few parts here and there were different but as far as I know they share the same engine, trans, and diff.

Im glad u did this donut media. I had my fiero for 5 years and it was a nice ass car. Even tho it didnt go fast i didnt really care. Everytime i went out people would always stare at it. So it felt great riding it. Sadly i sold mine a few months ago.

It really is a shame GM decided to just can it. They probably feared it would conflict with Corvette sales, yet I just don't see that happening. Would have been a great Miata competitor.
Exactly, the MR2 lasted until 2007. GM missed out on a golden opportunity. Like the Camero and the Firebird, the Corvette and the Fiero could have dominated the high end 2-seater sports car market in the US.
@@wingedhorsegarage473 Agreed. They tried again with the Solstice/Sky and oddly enough it was canned, yet I remember when you combined the sales of the Solstice and Sky they sold more than the MX-5. As the Corvette moves further up the price scale and the Camaro taking up the slack it would be awesome to have another two seater that could fill the niche of that cheap, fun, roadster again. And they have basically all the parts to do it too. Turbo 4 cylinder, nicer suspension designs already in the GM parts bin. Pretty much everything they need sans a chassis. I'm sure they just think they don't need to make anything because they have the Camaro and Corvette already. The one upside though would be that a new turbo 4 cylinder sports car would be something that could be sold more easily in Europe than the Camaro/Corvette can be.
@@wingedhorsegarage473 Haha nice. I would love to have a hard top Solstice GXP, but I'm pretty sure those are extremely rare. I could see a case for making a new Solstice (or whatever brand name) for one as a Chevy competitor to the MX-5/Fiat, one for Cadillac as a Z4/CLK competitor and one for Opel as Euro specific competitor. Possibly do what they did with the Camaro, first develop a great chassis for Cadillac and then strip it down and make it for the non-luxury brands.
Had an ‘87 GT. Rebuilt it from the ground up and swapped the engine to a L98 small block V8. I painted it Millennium Yellow. The “fire” think started because, on the first year, leaves and debris would accumulate between the rear window and deck lid then fall down on the exhaust manifold and catch fire. I think this was only documented a handful of times, despite the pervasive nature of the “fire” claim. That was fixed in later models by installing a wide rubber weather strip between the rear window and deck lid. Despite its unique look, the Fiero was basically a GM parts bin car. Adding horsepower was fun and necessary but I never was able to get the thing to handle. In the end it was a fun car that did turn a lot of heads and spark a lot of conversations.

Last year, I bought a 85 GT in really good condition. It had 123000 km on it. I drove 10000 km over 5 months from May to October and had no issues. The V6 has just enough power to make it fun to drive. No power steering or power brakes, but it’s got power windows. Figure that.

A runner is someone who runs mail back and forth to different buildings, long before the internet. I worked my way up a bit since then but still nothing to brag about : ) I really did work with him. Have some interesting stories and he really was a hell of a nice guy.

If Pontiac was given enough money then we could still have both companies maybe despite the recession as Pontiac could have started a new "pony car" war with a properly build Fiero, even with the Iron Duke base engine, because it was a great engine just not a performance engine.

Many moons ago I drove a Fiero GT with an Olds Quad 4 HO engine swap. It was a friggin' rocket.
Everything you need to know about the fiero is that if your a good mechanic and comfy with swaps, is that a northstar fits in the back fairly easily.
This episode gave me flashbacks of my mom's Fiero before it finally gave out. (And caught fire)

I owned a '84 Pontiac Fiero. My wife's grandpa worked at GM and obtained the first year production model for his wife and she sold it to my wife for a fountain soda. It was fun to drive, but had 80,000 mile rated Firestones on it. Slid like a banshee. We had soooo many issues with the engine, in the shop 3 times till we had no money to put into it. My wife's father eventually bought it to fix it up, but ended up selling it later. I would love to get a restored one, but the GT instead of the first gen as it was very fun to drive. The speakers in the headrest were a riot, sounded like crap, but there was nowhere else to put em, LOL. Thanks for the vid!!

@@ryanburke5383 I have been a passenger in a Fiero with the 3.8L SC V6 which also had a few simple modifications - it was a very fast car, I've never been in anything quite as fast. Keep in mind there are faster cars, just none that I have experienced. Also consider upgrading the wheels, brakes and transmission if you are going for all out performance.

It really is a shame GM decided to just can it. They probably feared it would conflict with Corvette sales, yet I just don't see that happening. Would have been a great Miata competitor.
Exactly, the MR2 lasted until 2007. GM missed out on a golden opportunity. Like the Camero and the Firebird, the Corvette and the Fiero could have dominated the high end 2-seater sports car market in the US.
@@wingedhorsegarage473 Agreed. They tried again with the Solstice/Sky and oddly enough it was canned, yet I remember when you combined the sales of the Solstice and Sky they sold more than the MX-5. As the Corvette moves further up the price scale and the Camaro taking up the slack it would be awesome to have another two seater that could fill the niche of that cheap, fun, roadster again. And they have basically all the parts to do it too. Turbo 4 cylinder, nicer suspension designs already in the GM parts bin. Pretty much everything they need sans a chassis. I'm sure they just think they don't need to make anything because they have the Camaro and Corvette already. The one upside though would be that a new turbo 4 cylinder sports car would be something that could be sold more easily in Europe than the Camaro/Corvette can be.

I could see a case for making a new Solstice (or whatever brand name) for one as a Chevy competitor to the MX-5/Fiat, one for Cadillac as a Z4/CLK competitor and one for Opel as Euro specific competitor. Possibly do what they did with the Camaro, first develop a great chassis for Cadillac and then strip it down and make it for the non-luxury brands.
The concept for the 89 fiero was pretty badass.

Had an ‘87 GT. Rebuilt it from the ground up and swapped the engine to a L98 small block V8. I painted it Millennium Yellow. The “fire” think started because, on the first year, leaves and debris would accumulate between the rear window and deck lid then fall down on the exhaust manifold and catch fire. I think this was only documented a handful of times, despite the pervasive nature of the “fire” claim. That was fixed in later models by installing a wide rubber weather strip between the rear window and deck lid.
Despite its unique look, the Fiero was basically a GM parts bin car. Adding horsepower was fun and necessary but I never was able to get the thing to handle. In the end it was a fun car that did turn a lot of heads and spark a lot of conversations.
