Thanks Molly, a lovely, clear and concise video into what each tool does. Lovely to see your work in practice, it never ceases to amaze how intricate your blocks are; thank you.
Very generous of you to share this wonderful video. I absolutely adore your work and have a little gallery wall started that you are featured on. I would love more videos like this that show how to take care of carving tools, especially how to sharpen them. I also love your studio organization! So glad you’re taking us along with you on your adventures and while making art in your studio and on your last residency. Thanks all the way from Canada Molly.
Thank you for watching! I’ll make more videos like this I’m sure, I don’t think I’m very good at sharpening my tools so not sure I want to teach people how to do it badly 😅 maybe it’ll spur me on to practice and get better!
Thank you Molly! I love your prints and I really appreciate you making this video! I learned a lot from your descriptions of the tools you use and prefer.
This is such a useful video - thank you! I am a Lino printmaker but really want to explore wood engraving this year, so this was perfect! Also, the sound the tools make when engraving the wood is so very satisfying! I would definitely be interested in a video on the printing aspect of wood engraving. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills.
I'm so pleased to hear that! Unfortunately wood engraving tools aren't compatible with lino in my experience, I've said for years that someone needs to design a multiple line tool for lino cutting!
I'm really pleased to hear that, I wanted it to be helpful to people wanting to learn but also interesting to watch for everyone else! I hope you're keeping warm!
Thanks so much you have made me incredibly interested in wood engraving….. I have enjoyed printmaking since I left school and I’m now 60 🤣🤣🤣 but I have never tried wood engraving. I’m finding your channel absolutely brilliant! Thanks so much for the effort you put into making these videos.
Molly, thank you for the tool tour! I'm fascinated by hand tools and how they are used. Also, thank you for explaining the difference between wood cut and wood engraving! (I bet Winnie knew)
Absolutely wonderful video! I've been eyeing up the E C Lyons tools for a while and this really helped me to understand what they all do. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this with us. Also I hadn't quite understood the difference between wood engraving and woodcut until you pointed it out!!
You are truly an inspiration! I have been trying my hand at lino printing here and there over the years and love the process from carving to print. I have to say, my attraction to all things "miniature" drew me into your prints in a "big" way! Stuart Little was my favorite childhood story :) There is something magical about all things tiny. Love your work! I also do a little metal engraving. The tools look to be the same as yours, but are not angled. Do your gravers come angled and mounted in the handle?
Thank you so much! Yes miniature art is magical isn't it! I always thought metal engraving tools were the same as wood engraving tools.Yes the tools I use come as shown 🥰
Thank you for your wonderful videos and your beautiful work , could you please tell me what types of Lyons multiliners do you use that you found useful for your works, It would be very helpfull for me since I would like to order some for my work.
Hi Sam, I'll do one on printing for sure! The paper I used is now discontinued so I've got a lot of research/testing to do before I can pass on any new paper recommendations unfortunately! But I find the thin/smooth paper gets the nicest results!
Such a helpful video. I just wondered if you have any further specific info about where to buy tools from? Also some tools have numbers but I'm not sure how the number relates to size. Thank you.
Hi! Thank you! Oh I’ve never known what the numbers mean - I tend to peal off the stickers as they annoy me! I think many websites describe things as small, medium etc! I think I said in the video small spitsticker, medium square scourper 🤔 Not sure if you’re in the Uk but I shop at Lawrence art supplies, jacksons and possibly intaglio sell them too! I hope that helps 🥰
Thanks so much. I will look again on those sites and try to tally up the numbers with the size. It's a downside of shopping online I think. Also, I think your popularity means they are selling out fast 😃 Love your prints and your videos. Thank you. x
@@KeturahCreative wood engraving is definitely becoming more and more popular for sure! I think the tools are shipped over from the USA so I guess it takes a while for UK sites to get restocked! Thank you so much!
Hi Molly I am looking at getting a 4 line multi tool, they come in 2 sizes 65 lines per inch and 85 lines per inch not sure which one would be best. Wonder if you can help at all.
I just came across your work today, and I want to try it for myself. Did you say that you are engraving the end grain? What is the reasoning behind that?
Yep end grain wood, I believe when the tools are used on long grain it splinters, woodcut is traditionally long grain and wood engraving is end grain 👍
Thanks for watching! The link is in the description below the video 👌 I use a more modern, portable press in the video before this, there are details in that video description about that press 🥰
Good question! I prefer wood engraving but some lino printmakers have tried wood engraving and hated it so definitely give it a try and see what you think 🥰
Thanks Molly, a lovely, clear and concise video into what each tool does. Lovely to see your work in practice, it never ceases to amaze how intricate your blocks are; thank you.
Thank you Mark, I'm really pleased you enjoyed watching this video!
Your prints are masterful. They embody your artistic and technical skill. Thank you for sharing your techniques and tips
Thank you so much 😊
I’m amazed at the amount of detail you achieve in your block engraving (-: Marion 🎉
It's all thanks so my tools, they're so fine and allow me to create a lot of detail over a small area 🥰

Really pleased you found this helpful Janet! Good luck with your wood engraving journey 🥰
Thank you so much for this wonderful video…. Very inspirational for me! Question - can the same tools be used for carving lino? Thanks
I'm so pleased to hear that! Unfortunately wood engraving tools aren't compatible with lino in my experience, I've said for years that someone needs to design a multiple line tool for lino cutting!
Thank you for this Molly, this was very informative, such beautiful wood engravings. 🇨🇦(good watching today especially -35C here 🥶)

I'm pleased to hear that! I didn't discover wood engraving until after I graduated, I love it!
Wonderful introduction. I'd never been aware of the detail you can achieve.
Thank you so much! Yes so much detail! I actually often find it frustrating I can’t make bigger marks!

Brilliant Molly. Really helpful to understand how you use the different tools
Thank you!
Thanks so much for this very informative video. Tools can be so confusing when starting out.
I’m so pleased you found it helpful! Yes it can be really confusing for sure and you don’t want to be purchasing loads unnecessarily 😅

Hello Molly, id love to hear more about the wood and the ink. Thanks for sharing. Inspiring work..
Thanks Kevin, okay great, I’ll add it to my list!
Spitstickers = Elliptic Tint Tools, Square Scorpers = Flat Gravers and Round Scorpers = Round Gravers in the USA.
really amazes me every time...ty...
Aw thank you! I guess it’s the result of years of practice 🥰

I'd be interested to know about your preferred paper, ink and maybe a comparison between lemon and boxwood.

How do you sharpen your tools?
Thank you! What ink do you use. What is the modern day print press machine. You commented yours is antique. Very interesting video!
Thanks for watching! The link is in the description below the video 👌 I use a more modern, portable press in the video before this, there are details in that video description about that press 🥰
Very interesting indeed. I've been messing around a little with linocuts and would be interested to know why you prefer wood engraving?
Good question! I prefer wood engraving but some lino printmakers have tried wood engraving and hated it so definitely give it a try and see what you think 🥰
Thank you for this video. What kind of paper do you use to print on?
No worries, I use a Zerkall wood engraving paper but they don’t produce paper anymore so I’m going to have to find an alternative!
It is very beautiful to watch your art, but looks too difficult for me… I will keep on watching you 😊❤️
Thank you for watching 🥰🥰
PLEASE GET A MICROPHONE SO WE CAN HEAR YOU.
I did reply to your previous comment to let you know I now have a microphone, this video should be nice and clear compared to my previous ones 🤞
