  • Here we discuss a very solid 5th gear nut solution for NV4500 transmission behind Dodge Ram Cummins engines. 5th gear is fraught with design flaws but the aftermarket has stepped up to provide options to mitigate the design flaws. These are really great transmissions and can be set up for long term success with the right parts and assembly.

Do you know what I have to all have to change a 2x4 nv4500 transmission to a 4x4 to fit a 1996 dodge 2500? I like the idea of changing the main shaft. I figure I will need one of them for sure and change out the tail shaft housing to accommodate the transfer case, if that's all I need, do you know where I can get the tail shaft section and the new main shaft

I just had my nv4500 pulled out for a rear main and went through it while it was out and replaced aftermarket brass syncros with lined ones and while apart decided to replace my fifth gear as it had loosened up a little. I have the same mainshaft with split washer. When I replaced the gear I used bearing retaining compound with the new fifth gear and put it back together same way as I have a couple times before. I now have a pretty intense vibration only in fifth... I can run up to speed in 4th and no vibration and soon as shift to 5th there's instant vibration. Would a new gear cause something like this?? Any ideas would be great before I tear back into it.... thanks.

Who makes this mainshaft with the split washer design?

Do you use sleeve retaining compound on the taper roller bearing also or just the 5th gear splines?

On the aftermarket shafts, the bearings are all a press fit. No need for a retaining compound.

Is this split washer kit a guaranteed
    Solution?

Definitely not. If your old gear and shaft have come loose at all, no fancy hardware at all will keep it secure. Welding risks breaking the mainshaft. With our package of replacing the mainshaft, and fifth gear, using the split washer retainers, AND the nut, we’ve never had a fifth gear failure reported. The key is fresh splines, good adhesives, and the updates shaft with the split washers.

Why didn’t they use a snap ring in stead?

Your syncros are probably going out on 5th gear
