The best mechanic I have ever seen warned me about cleaning parts in solvent with no gloves. He had lost alot of feeling in his hands from the practice and told me to never do it. Just a headsup to all the mechanics out there.
@@ShainAndrews Yeah, solvent exposure being one of the. It'll dissolve the fat layer around your nerves and damage them. I got it from wiping down a boat bottom before an epoxy application. Took months for the feeling in my hands to come back.

Thanks for the step by step process on the rebuild of the NV 4500. Great to see what I’ll be working on before I get in there. I laud your efforts of helping other enthusiasts wherever they are.
@@samueladams7798 I don't think it could be better. It would take some serious effort and a dedicated film crew and I still would have my doubt on the outcome. Now I just have to find a good video of removing one from a 04 Ram 2500 4X4 with a Hemi. I swear when I ordered my truck it was seriously the only one like it. Never seen another 04 2500 4x4 with a Hemi and a 5 speed. My friends call my truck the 6,500 pound Porsche. Sam this video is so well made anyone who know righty tighty lefty loosy could follow along and find success.
Great Video. This video illustrates why I am a stick shifter for life. I love the muncie, the borg warner, THE FULLER and even the NV4500. Not that fond of the 5600. But these boxes are yards in front of any automatic in terms of reliability, capability and their ability to haul a herd of dead hippies.
Looks like a very fun project. Can you send us a link to those directions you got from that guy and maybe make a list of any special tools needed oh, it looks like you just slide the gears on tap the bearing on till it's all tight and go for it I figured it would have to be a lot of feeler gauges and other special tools. My 97 Chevy C 3500 has synchronizer issues for first and reverse no, not that I really care that much but maybe someday when I'm bored I could do something like this for fun
Very impressive! Question I have a 1995 Dodge Ram 3500 2WD with 5 speed NV4500. It has a low gear then 1 - 4 speed and reverse. The truck pulls like a crazy horse but will not run over 78 mph and fuel consumption is poor because of the low gear in the transmission. I have changed the rear ended from 4:10 to 3:55 made just a bit of difference. Can I change the low gear to just a first gear?
I've got a video on my channel with an issue on a "rebuilt" NV4500. Have you seen many "overdrive" selector sleeves moving too far and making contact with the inside of the tail shaft housing? This seems to be an issue I've run into. I easily have a .100" groove in the case nearly all the way around. I've never run the transmission however it was bought as a swap kit that I have "parted out" (project stayed automatic rather than manual), and repurposed for another truck I have. I'm at a loss on where to go as I was hoping for a straight forward transmission swap. Thanks! Great video as well.
Can't seem to find this info anywhere, but can the front bearing retainer from a 96+ work on a 95 GM? My understanding is that the input size changed in 95 and stayed the same after that, so in theory, it should fit, right?
Good video! so im assuming you didnt need a press to rebuild this trans? cause i might be rebuilding one to put in a truck, would rather do it all myself but i dont know if anything need to be pressed appart?
You happen to have any pdf files of a service manual how to tear one apart and go back together? Im getting ready to tear apart a dodge trans and rebuild it
Do you do rebuild for fun or work? I have a core 4500 with bad reverse, need a rebuild. Where are you located? My name is Ben, snappbuildingco@gmail.com
Lori Snapp I did this one for my personal truck I'm building. I'm not a mechanic buy trade I just grew up around restoring old cars. It's what I like to do. If your wanting your core rebuilt I could help you out if ya like.
I didn't buy a manual, how ever I did find great forum on cummins forums were the guy walk threw every step and also had pictures. I just printed that off! www.cumminsforum.com/forum/94-98-drivetrain-except-engine/516911-diy-nv4500-rebuild-information.html
I had my dld 241 transfer case rebuilt.I tryed to put the transfur case back in and it likes about 3/4 of an inch from going all the way back. Is it possible the 5th gear nut backed off and is not allowing me to let the transfer case slide alt the way back to the transmission on a 1998 dodge cummins 2500 5 speed.COULD ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME.
Just kidding I will just add a gear vendors over/underdrive then you have bulletproof set up. I have a 2003 dodge 3500 I bought new and my NV 4500 now has 387,000 miles on it and still going.

I bet 100 bucks you are a Vet. Thanks if you are a brother. Till all else I need a build sheet. POL needed, a kit P/N, the better stuff like the shaft nut. What to look for. what to do and not. 04 Ram 2500 tuff frame 4x4 with a Hemi. My War prize. Needs a bring back to line ready level.

@@damanifesto Gotta stop throwing "solvent" around. I mean water is a solvent. Your symptoms sound like isocyanate exposure.

Really need to use a torque wrench on that 5th gear nut.
Had me singing a little Five Finger there :-) Sweet music choice!

Good quick visual reference. Would you mind giving me part numbers for the tools and spacers you used to seat bearings and install rings?
Thanks for your time making the video

Get bigger tires, changing first gear isn’t going to help top end mpg.
What happened to the part of the video where the bearing behind reverse is removed?
At 6:30 is hammer the ring an alternative to torquing it with a torque wrench? Thanks

MadMachinist5.9 tag me in the video I’ll watch it
I know that early gm nv4500s have a 6.34 first gear is this interchangeable to a 5.61 dodge
Damn? Parts washer , lubing everything
better than most other techs
holy sheeeiitt!!! and he`s torquing everything!
And checks fitment and clearance after he installs another peice
So what would you charge someone to rebuild an Envy 4500 for a Dodge first gen
If it’s the factory 5 speed from that dodge it’s not an NV, it’s a GETRAG 360
nice clean and quality build. we use that blue anaerobic or blue glue as we call it at cat.... it wont ever leak lol
